The fallout from a third consecutive loss

The honeymoon is over for Joe Philbin and his coaching staff, as I wrote in today's Miami Herald.

After weeks of watching sweeps on third-and-inches, or having Mike Wallace always line up on the right side of the formation, or not committting to the running game, or watching Jimmy Graham shred Miami one week getting free releases but getting shut down by New England when they tied him up at the scrimmage line, the tipping point came on Sunday.

Off a bye, against a fourth-string QB and offering no solutions to old problems, the Dolphins coaching staff deserves some critical scrutiny.

They are not alone.

The offensive line, was mostly good enough on Sunday. And then Tyson Clabo, a good man having a bad season, gave up two sacks the final two Miami possessions.

"Those sacks are my sacks," Clabo said. "There's no way around it."

It didn't help that coaches asked Clabo to block Mario Williams one-on-one on the play which Williams beat Clabo and forced a Ryan Tannehill fumble. What was offensive coordinator Mike Sherman thinking?

Look, it's one thing to have the other team beat you.

But when you beat yourself with poor decisions in the coaching booth, the frustration is palpable.

Obviously, the coaching staff was not totally responsible for this upset loss.

Tannehill had a horrible first half -- throwing two interceptions -- despite inconsistent pressure on him from the Bills, who managed no sacks until the fourth quarter. One was returned 19 yards for a touchdown. He floated another near the goal line and what seemed like a scoring opportunity turned into another turnover.

The defense didn't do great work.

They gave up two fourth-quarter field goal drives that gave Buffalo the game.

They allowed the Bills to convert 9 of 19 third down plays (47.3 percent success rate).

About that defense: I have not questioned the defensive coaching staff but perhaps they merit a look as well. They inherited a defense that was sixth in the NFL in scoring in 2011. It wasn't perfect but it was good. Well, they were seventh in scoring under this staff in 2012 and are 20th in scoring this season.

That's going in the wrong direction.

Dion Jordan, the third overall selection in the draft, is only a part-time player. Players that were here and deemed too slow or too old -- Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett -- are playing better elsewhere than they did here.

It all raises eyebrows.

The Dolphins opened this season on a hopeful note with three consecutive wins. Now they are on a three-game losing skid and must travel to New England next Sunday trying to dig out of being in third place in the AFC East and already owning a home loss to the last-place Bills.

Redundant links. We get it.

nWhen your expected to contend and lose to a banged up bills squad with a practice squad QB. What other excuses can be made. Changes need to rain down

I was watching the game with my father. I said to him right after the game-ending fumble, "Why in the fu.k are we passing while holding the lead this late in the game. All we had to do was run 3 running plays and use the g.dd.mn clock! If we go 3 and out, they get the ball with not much time!" I should apply for a job at the Herald, but I bet 95% of our fans watching thought the same fu.cking thing! This staff is clueless with clock management! Clueless!

Shula's only weakness was loyalty. The only reason we don't get to the Superbowl at least twice more with Marino was that fu.cking Olivadotti and his inability to scheme a defense to stop the Bills.I realize now that Philbin has that same exact weakness with Sherman. This group will not get us there IMO.

This has been a sham since Ireland has been involed.
He has spent Ross' money with abandon and no eye for
Talent. How do you not see the deficiencies on the roster?
This is his team. If we miss the playoffs, it falls on him.
He should be fired. No question.

I guess me being nervous before the Bills game had merit. Apparently there has to be more than a BYE week of soul searching to have "Things" worked out??

The crazy suspect pass play calls when you are trying to grind out the win??

Our gunner Jones not even realizing his spacing, going out of bounds and apparently not aware??? Granted he made the play on Special Teams that caused a turnover to beat Atl. Pointing out the obvious as others have already...

The awful pick 6 to open and sloppy INT in field goal range? Come on Ryan Thill, know YOUR situational football.

Letting SCREENS beat you on 3rd and LOOOOONG?

Our kicker losing his mojo already??

The fact that all this came as the article said after a BYE to have two weeks to plan and get sharp?

I am such a crazed lifer that the Fins could lose every game the rest of the season and I will still follow and support them...by I am not paying $100-$300 to go to games between parking, hot dogs n beer and game seats.

DirecTv is costly but n where near going to actual games.

When you drop the ones you should win, they need to beat the team they most often don't...Pats are next. (PSSSST, Fins coaches, the Jets just showed you the blueprint today) The Fins need to show some moxy and get 'R done!

At the end of the day, even as bad as things are, the Fins just need to claw back into the win column or this season's promise will slide off the proverbial map.

It all starts with the GM, the guy who buys' the "groceries". Your currency in building a roster is money and draft picks. This offseason Ireland had tons of both, I believe 60 mill in cap room and 5 picks in the top 3 rounds. He wasted virtually all of it. The money? Mike Wallace, 60 mill, not even a top 20 WR. Tyson Claybo? A disaster. Phillip Wheeler? Not even as good as the guy he replaced, Kevin Burnett. Very little impact from the draft class. Poor development of players' we thought had potential, Rashad Jones, Olivier Vernon, etc. This roster let Buffalo come in here with it's JV QB and beat us. Unreal!!!

Simple fact: This coaching staff is stubborn. I don't mean smash-mouth football stubborn, I'm talking stupid stubborn. Week after week, they refuse to recognize their player's particular weaknesses, while they also refuse to recognize their own (CLOCK MANAGEMENT!) Today, late in the 4th quarter, the game situation screamed "Run the fu.king ball every down and burn the clock! If we don't get a 1st down, let the league's best punter pin them deep, then let the defense pin their ears back on the practice squad QB. What do we do? Pass, because Sherman is the new "Mr. Magoo". (Just like Dan Henning! Even looks like him!)

Now ai see why Sherman was demoted to college.

All we had to do was get a 1st down and run out the clock, but noooooo.

Stupid Sherman calls 3 pass plays in a row.

We definitely need a new OC/DC.

To Philbin, fire your best friend. HE SUCKS!!!!!

Just for shits and giggles, why did Ireland not convince Penny to stay on as a QB coach, or as an assistant when he got hurt the last time? He would make an excellent OC candidate IMO.

To start with, he is YOUNGER and he actually PLAYED IN THE NFL!

He also knew how to lead the players and MANAGE THE CLOCK!

I have been saying Philbin is the problem since HardKnocks. The guy has never impressed me. He has ejected most of the talent just because of his ego. Anyone who disagrees with him is gone. Long, Davis, Bush, Dansby and of course Carpenter among others. This is a life long coach that was never even allowed to call his own plays. A decent guy who is in way over his head. Did anyone else hear one announcer say to the other in the second qtr of the Baltimore game..."I was surprised he kicked out out of the room when you asked about the bad practice on Friday". That's all you need to know about the guy.

Agreed, Pennington would be a GREAT OC.

They are just not playing the %s, Tannehill being too young and Sherman apparently too old. The reasoning should have been: ok, we have 3+ min to go, it's second and 8, they have an 8 man front and we would love to add to our 1 point lead by passing the ball, but Williams, who has already hurt us from the R side, is on the right again vs Clabo with no help, so the probabilities for success and against failure in this particular situation lie in running the ball on 2nd and 3rd down and if no 1st down is achieved, punt it and pin them back as far as we can with 2 min left in the Game. That's how it should have gone, only, it wasn't.

I know that line of reasoning sounds simple in retrospect, but good Coaches and QBs make those split second, correct decisions all the Time. Finer still, perhaps take a long time calling the running plays, maybe take a delay of Game penalty when punting to try to milk down the clock to under 2 min. Then let the D take it from there.

The bad part is 95% of us in the peanut gallery saw it and the coaches who earn a living at it didn't. Sherman was good in his prime, but he is just too stubborn with age. I want a younger, ex-player as our OC.

I know that line of thinking sounds simple in retrospect, but good Coaches and QBs make those kind of split second and correct decisions all the Time. More, perhaps take a long time in calling those 2nd and 3rd running play, maybe take a delay of Game penalty when punting, all with the intention to leave less than 2 min on the clock, then let the D take it from there.

They are going to blame the loss on the turnovers. You'll see.

W/out a doubt they will. I will be somewhat surprised if Clabo doesn't get yanked after the 1st sack he gives up in NE next week.

We need more O-linemen in the Incognito-mold....mean! Wait and see, next year we will dump him, blame it on money and sign another high-priced defensive player, but not at a position we need.

Very disappointing group of Coaches here, beginning with Philbin, of course. You could make the argument for his deficits that he was rookie HC when hired but so was Jim Harbaugh, Tomlin and other immediately successful Coaches. Is it that Philbin has mediocre Player talent around him? Well, if so, he certainly is not maximizing it. Look at Jim Harbaugh. Got his Team to the play offs in his 1st year as HC with a QB that had never won anything in his life and was at that point borderline bust and who is flourishing in KC now. ???

It is the System, and always will be so. You have to find the best adaptation of your System and the circumstances that surround it. Look at Jim Harbaugh again. He had a solid system upon coming into the NFL but, at least with Alex Smith, he modified it in depth and variety specifically to fit Alex. And you have seen the results of that then fit.

Hey, Jeff, you wouldn't be playing Us for patsies here, now would you?

When we were 3 and 0 the press said, "75% of 3 and 0 teams make the playoffs."

I wonder what percentage slump to ANOTHER 7-9 season and have some staff fired.

Sponge up the negativity. I'm loving it...where is Odin jock sniffer who believes that Iredunce is doing a great job ? Some of the clowns disappear after a loss. The only thing that would have made this season better is if the Dolphins actually started 2-4. Which is really what they are, a 2-4 team. They're better than the Browns and the Bills. They're not better than the other teams they've faced. Nor are they better than the next two teams they face. How does 3-5 sound after 3-0 ? Ireland should have been fired along with Sparano after the 2010 season. He was not, and this is what Ross deserves. A team with a USFL logo will play like a USFL team. Maybe if the Memphis Showboats come to town the Dolphins will have a chance. How about the Denver Gold ? Even the Oakland Invaders would get eight sacks against this line.

Bush better than Miller
Long better than Martin
Davis better than Carroll
Dansby better than Ellerbe
Smith better than Jimmy Wilson
Carpenter better than Sturgis
Brandon Albert better than 2nd round Taylor
Marshall better than Wallace

Irelands continued Fail Forward Fast Programme

Perhaps getting the fans excited over 3-0 was the worst thing for this franchise. What's going to happen the next time the team in 3-0. Whether it's next year or in five years...naturally people will be skeptical, yeah but...

This may hurt business more than a 0-6 start would have.

Despite 3-2, the stadium was half empty today.

It's just plain sad to have watched this franchise sink as far as it has. People were loyal, excited about Saban, Parcells. You can't deliver Ireland and some faceless doucheb&g no one had ever heard of, Regis Philbin and expect to maintain an audience. They tried to inspire positive feelings with hope and glory boy Tannereach, a spending spree, a pathetic logo change and propaganda slogans such as "It's Our Time". How do they manufacture hope for next year ? What will season ticket sales be like next August ? This team isn't going to win 9 games. Ross needs to cut his losses now and clean house. Then find a proven winner to be the head coach. Andy Reid and Alex Smith would have been the perfect tonic this year. Think about this, if Ross had fired Ireland after 2010 as he should have. Perhaps Peyton Manning comes here and the Phins are Super Bowl contenders.

The scary thing is, San Diego Carolina the Jets twice N.England twice and Cincy they can very easily lose all 7 of those games. Brady twice Rivers C.Newton A.Dalton is on fire now and a Jets young and very talented defensive front. With this cluesless coaching staff a potential 5-11-6-10 disasterous season looms ahead for this team !!

Yes the coaching staff has been some of the problem but i do not think T-hill is the Q-back he has no pocket presents, has too many turnovers and he still had a chance to win the game with wide open receiver in the endzone and did not connect. His long ball acuracy is terrible. i seen mnay of Q-backs hit that pass in there sleep. that is what winning Q-backs make you do pay for mistakes and buffalo had a big mistake and T-hill did not take advantage

Very happy for D.Carpenter remember your only offensive weapon this sorry a** franchise had during the fat a** T.Sparano days. Remember the same guy you a** clown Dolphinsfans ran out of town by the a** clown no personality dictator of a coach you morons have. The same moron who needs a cue card to read a scripted victory speech. Boy you Dolphinsfans have a clueless owner who really knows how to pick a head coach and don't get me started about your clueless G.M. who really doesn't know real talent if it was right in front of him !! Another draft class that hasn't contributed on the field PATHETIC !!

Right on Marco !! Hey what's up with all the Orange seats Dolphinsfans ? You do realize this is year #40 since your last World Championship you people do realize this right ? Pathetic how you people just accept the b.s. this S.Florida sells you on this mediocre product. They lie to you people and most of you still drink the kool-aid !! It's so comical about how moronic you fans are it's sad !!

7-9 would be roflmao.

4-6 finish is very possible.

The Patriots sweep the Dolphins.

Jets, Bills = 2-3 losses.

Bengals, Steelers, Chargers ?

Lmao..."It's Our Time"

New logo, new era.

What happened to the T-Hill kool-aid drinkers on this site. T-Hill the anointed one was never ready to play QB over Moore who my not have the strong arm that T-Hill has but he throws a more accurate deep ball, reads the defense better, releases the ball quicker, moves in the pocket better and more. When the chance was there to really improve the O-line Ireland rates Jake Long below needing to pay him his due. Wow look at KC now the team that kept Albert who the Dolphins were trying to pick up. The great evaluator made another mistake...and so it goes.
One year Ireland leaves the Dolphins without enough WR talent and then the next without enough O-line talent. He then gets an extension. What's wrong with the Dolphins, take a guess???

sick about this loss.....didnt deserve to win but still had a chance late, as poorly as they played.....worst case on the last drive, if they run 3 times and dont get a first down, they punt and Bills have the ball on their own 20 with less than 2 minutes left.....thats absolute worst case--best is that they get a first down and drain the clock--Sherman was awful (and therefore Philbin was awful by extension), TH was awful (worse than awful)--same issues, trending down, regressing--big picture is getting worrisome--really not good.

How many Offensive coordinators can we blame? It's every season, and every year. As my wife said, it's the Dolphins why are you surprised?

Sherman HAS to GOOOOOOO!!!!!!

If there is a game ball for a losing performance I would give it to Mike Sherman. First three quarters Zero sacks because we had a running game going. First possession of the 4th quarter he abandoned the run and and from then on we went down hill. Tannehill played a very poor first half and I guess Sherman was trying to give him a chance to redeem himself thus abandoning the run and that did not work. Stick with what is working.

During the jubilation of the 3-0 start, I pointed out the Dolphins lack of line blocking, lack of running the ball, and Tannehills habit of fumbling and that the Dolphins were extremely lucky to be 3-0. Now their 3-3 and are playing the worst football Ive ever witnessed. Football isn't rocket science, including the NFL style football. Its blocking, and tackling. Any moron can run through a hole in the line but it takes linemen with a certain attitude,,,like Incognito, people who love physical contact. Same applies to the defense side of the ball.
Right now the Dolphins, Im sorry to say, have not much talent along the OL. Clabo was once a good RT, Well, no more, he's become old and thats life. Pouncey is having a semi good/bad year. And the rest are second string including Martin. The worst thing is theres no one on the bench who is remotely talented enough to play. Heres the kicker, the coaching staff isn't smart enough. Philbin walks the sideline with a 1,000 yd stare. Sherman has been fired how many times from the NFL and college?
I think Mr Ross might be better served if he sold the franchise to a person who has at least a 5th grade education in NFL style of football.

Depressing yes. But for the second game we lost by a missed field goal. Lets get sturgis a close kick to get him back on track. Suddenly we can't make plays when we need them. Thigpin put us in great position. Before that we let Jackson get a first down running the ball cause ellerbe didnt explode and wrap up he tried a shoulder tackle on 3rd and four.

you couldn't have said it any better Armando, and we thought this was going to be a good year and I guess we were wrong again. There is plenty of time to make a run, but they way they are playing it doesn't look probable. Cut Clabo NOW!!!!!

Game after game, year after year. The offense does nothing inspiring, and year after year once again, the Dolphins are AFC East bottom feeders.

Defense shouldn't get off easy, either. I saw at least 2 missed tackles on that Fred Jackson run that got them the 1st down on the drive that ended with the winning FG. Overall, the poorest effort from the Team this year, up to now.

Dear Dolfans,

I know that you're disappointed about the current product on the field. Please understand that I feel your frustration. When the Dolphins lost to the Eagles at home in 2011. Many fans turned to me and implored me to fix the problems with their beloved team. I assured them that I would do everything within my power. The following day I terminated Tony Sparano's services. In the subsequent off season, I placed an emphasis on the acquisition of a franchise quarterback, which yielded Ryan Tannehill. While Tannehill's occasional struggles may be tough to endure. I ask those of you who have supported this franchise for many years to exercise patience in the development of our young quarterback and our young players. Focus on the positives as I've done. After his difficult start on Sunday, Ryan rallied his team back to take the lead late in the game. I still believe in the young aspiring Proctologist, even if he plays like an as$ at times.

All of the opportunity/possibilities they had at 3-0 are gone.....cant ignore the issues this team has, both personnel and coaching--turnovers, Oline, TH turnovers and poor decisions (which are QB killers....everything else is minor compared to his decisionmaking), questionable/lousy coaching and play decisions--coaches stubborness.....I was hoping theyd contend for the playoffs, which isnt exactly a lofty goal, but now I'm not sure about that at all.....and the bigger picture, with the coaches/QB, is very unsteady too--bumming.

I said before Sherm would abandon the run game when it was working. I also said on the last drive the pass rush would crush Tannehill. Both predictions were correct. Predictable offence, subpar defense.
Tannehill is a decent, not great qb. This team has some talent, but the schemes are awful. The coaches are apparently awful, as they make no real adjustments. Ireland failed to address the online, and traded up to draft a position we don't NEED. And he hired these coaches. All should be sh$tcanned.

I have bled Aqua and Orange for 42 years and I live in Syracuse NY just 2 hours from Muffablow (Buffalo) This one hurt big time. We were beat by a rookie coaching staff (Which Screwed over Syracuse University by all leaving for Muffablow) A taxi squad QB and 2-4 record, at home after a bye. The play calling sucked, Tannahill is NOT Marino!!!! somebody should tell Sherman. Don't know if Ross reads any of this but if we cannot beat Muffablow at home with two weeks or prep, the fins are done this year and all that money wasted.

We are out coached. We have the player talent we just don't use it. So sad.

Philbin, please play Nate Gardner at RT. Please move your WR's around. Please teach your LB's how to wrap up.

Fin Fans, the expectation this off season was that Ireland bring talent to Miami. Mike Wallace is an exceptional WR, Ellerbe is an excellent LB, and Clabo is a nine year veteran on the OL.

Wallace had 8 TD's last year and 10 in 2010, yet he has 1 TD this year, and was essentially a non-factor against Buffalo...BUFFALO!! Ellerbe was considered the "premier" defensive free agent this offseason and Ireland landed him, yet he had a chance to give the ball back to Miami on a 3rd and 4 in the 4th quarter and got steam rolled by Fred Jackson (the oldest RB in the league). Clabo was solid in ATL's high powered offense for years, yet is on pace to set a personal high in sacks allowed.

The team had two weeks to prepare for a game against a practice squad QB, and it was at home, and it was the Bills. Joe Philbin has some explaining to do, not Jeff Ireland.

And now NE? Puleeeess

I hope they lose every game left. We have soooo many problems were we just need hi draft picks and free agents to fix these problems. The coaches cant patch the OL or the Running game. Or our DB's. I am sooooo Pissed after yesterday. 2 games in a row that we should of won with no problems.

Craig M...

Don't know if your out there...but I have harping on this coaching since the FINS were 2-0....Ray Charles could see this sh@t strm comming....even Philbin told us it was "UNSUSTANABLE" after 3-0....

Good...glad he saw it coming as well....

the question is....

WTH are you gonna do about it....

Have faith in me, I will get this fixed. So Jeff Ireland's six year plan hasn't worked thus far. In another six years I will reevaluate the situation.

You remember that quote by the late Bum Philips that more or less said, Shula can beat you with his Team, and then he can beat you with your Team? Well, it's true.

I believe Ross stated that the Dolphins were a d@#* good football team about a month ago. He should say something just as candid now.

When is the Herald going to do an article on the many mistakes made by Ireland? He's been GM for six years.

You could bring in how many Star Players you would want, and you still would wind up with a losing Team if you do not have the Coaches to maximize their play within the System.

TOUGH loss. 2 years in a row that we lose to the Bills in this fashion. Tannehill righted his play in the 2nd quarter and the second half. Yesterday was about our defense letting a scrub QB have ANY effect on us. It was frustrating to watch. No pressure, WIDE OPEN players for the Bills. Where is the pass rush?

To anyone who does not think Ireland is responsible for this mess- you are wrong. He hired these clueless coaches. Ireland is good at salary cap management, and DL scouting. That's about all.
This coaching staff is the most clueless bunch I've seen in a long time. No game planning, no adjustments, horrible play calling. "They just need to play better." If that was true, ANYONE could play ANY position, then be told, "YOU JUST NEED TO PLAY BETTER."
When your coach says he needs to do a better job preparing his team to play, after a bye, he should be fired for incompetence.
