Assignment football: Stop Gronkowski

The New York Jets might have thought themselves unlucky last week when their scheduled game against the New England Patriots coincided with the return of tight end Rob Gronkowski to the lineup.

Well, the Dolphins might think themselves less fortunate because the Gronkowski they will see play against them Sunday has a game under his proverbial belt. He's had a 51 game snaps to knock off some rust. He's had an extra week of practice -- although admittedly limited.

Great, right?

"Yeah, I mean certainly he’s an impact player, and any time you have guys like that that are out and you’re fortunate enough to get back, they certainly make a difference and give your team a boost, and I thought he did that on Sunday," Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said. "Hopefully we’ll be able to build on that going forward.Yeah, we ended up – we had to throw a lot of passes last week based on the situation in the game."

Stopping Rob Gronkowski has to be a major goal for the Dolphins this weekend if they hope to beat the Patriots. When healthy, he has been among the most accomplished tight ends in the NFL. And when facing accomplished tight ends, the Dolphins have not exactly had awesome success.

Remember Jimmy Graham caught four passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns against Miami. Remember Coby Fleener had four catches for 69 yards and a touchdown. Remember Jordan Cameron caught nine passes for 108 yards and a touchdown.

But there is some hope.

The Dolphins limited Tony Gonzalez to only four catches for 24 yards without a TD. And Gronk is more a Gonzalez type TE than he is a Graham, who the Saints flank out wide like a wide receiver. Gronk is more an in-line, traditional tight end.

"He’s a unique guy in that his combination of size and strength, his ability to body position people is really what separates him. I thought the Jets did some things that at times they did some good things with him in the ball game, but yet he still caught the ball and had over 100 yards of receptions in the game. You don’t want him to catch the big balls down the field, if you can kind of keep him contained where he’s catching shallow balls that is a good thing. You have to be able to do some things to try and take him out of the game, so that’s going to be a big challenge for us."

So what do the Dolphins do? I'd imagine because the Patriots have no accomplished outside threats, Gronkowski will draw doubles. He'll be bracketed by either a linebacker and a safety or a nickel cornerback and a safety, probably Reshad Jones.

Gronkowski one-on-one against either a cornerback or a safety is a mismatch because he's more physical than they are. Gronk one-on-one against a linebacker is a mismatch because he's faster than the linebacker. It is a sure-fire call for bracket coverage and fulltime attention.

"Remember Gronk is a good player for us – he’s a really good player for us – but we have some other guys that I really count on too that I’ve been playing with," quarterback Tom Brady said (suggesting he's got other weapons that he really doesn't have to any consistent degree). "It’s going to be a big challenge for our guys going up against a real good coverage secondary. I’m sure – they’re very much a game plan team, and they’ll have their different elements to their particular game plan, but even playing them last year, they’re a good defense."

TanneFAIL needs to be benched or trade for a 3rd rounder

Daytona, in case you've forgotten a little about me,

make money - I earn quite well, matter of fact, I have no shame in saying my house hold income is about 5 times the average household income a year and growing ...

money markets - I average a return of 47% a year on my portfolio - think about that when you make your way to the bank and your manager tells you that your portfolio can make 8.

Language - I'm bilingual and have no problems getting around in latin speaking countries as I've done many times before

Working out - I work out five days a week and wake up before 6 am to do so. I bench over 330 lobs quite easily (not bad for an accountant) and run 5k about 4 times a week.

Instrument - sorry I lack here, no artsy at all unfortunately. I hear you're quite good at the skin flute though.

Woman? Got married in June, expecting our first child now...

Anything else?

A fact that all the Ireland supporters seem to forget is that we would not have to make so many trades and FA pick ups if we drafted good. When you continually waste 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks on players that hardly see the field you are forced to take chances on player like Wallace, Ellerbe, Keller, Wheeler and now McKinney.
We have failed at drafting a quality LB, WR, DB and TE for an entire decade. This along with our QB issues are the reason we are a rudderless organization that is constantly in rebuild mold.

Ha Kris, but come on, you did say you'd want Matt Schaub here///

Mark...

I do have one problem with what you are saying....

I believe it was pre-season...and we were talking about the QB postion (surprise PHINS 78)....

anyway....the long and short of the conversation was this....somebody said it was foolish to measure Tanne against Breesor Manning, P....fair enough...

SO I then suggest we compare Tanne to Luck...3...Wilson....and so on and so forth....his draft class...

The blog thought this was a weird idea...and thought I was out of line for suggesting such a thing....I include you as being one of the ones that obnjected...

Now that 3 is comming off a kneee injury...and Wilson is having a worse year than last year (whicj I predicted MANY TIMES...due to his height,,,and the way he would be played this year)....almost all of your arguments...involve Tanne's contemporaries....

that a bit of a back-step from where you first stood on the issue...is it not?

cocoa, maybe after the last decade, my level of expectation has diminished but I'm happy with his progress (not saying I'm happy with the season - just with the progress the Qb made) and you're right, still a ways to go...

Mark the office boy lost in fantasy

Now benching over 400 lbs but with a little struggle
the 350 lb bench is still easy
and earn 1/2 million of more a year making copies and getting coffee for my boss
Still jerking my pony and spend the first 5 months of the year giving my salary to the Canadian government, eh

my testicles are resting comfortably in a gay bar every Sunday

Go Fish !

Herm Edwards is pure ghetto

Why does almost every person on here expect Tannehill to be Manning with this talent deficient offense and after less than 2yrs in the NFL?? That is not being realistic. The Dolphins will send about $109million this year of that less that $40million is on Offense. This should tell you we have no REAL talent on that side of the ball. When the brass commits to getting some real talent around Tannehill a lot of bloggers on this site will need to eat crow!!

Mark
send us picture of big fat soft lilly white flabby beer belly and the stench u call ur wife, from the gay bar

and then tell us more what the Dolphins should do if little pukey marky was in charge

LMAO!

What was this years spending spree about then Bill...

FINS probably spent close to 90 MIL on WRs....

if thats not committed...I don't know what is....

Its either On Tanne...r the coaching staff....but the BRASS has done its job....

Catch u next season, Mark
U comedian u

Remember 3-5 on Happy Halloween

No no no Kris, let me elaborate, I do compare Tannehill with all his peers - not just his contemporaries. In fact with a lot of the stats, completions, yards, tds, etc, etc, he is above the league average.

Now the one fault i find holding Tannehill back from being up there with the best is his # of turnovers. Now I try to see why he is turning the ball over more than the average NFL 1st stringer... I looked at fumbles per # of times, he's sacked, turnover per the number of pass attempts, etc, etc.

And one of the things I found was the guys who are suffering the same problems are guys with the similar level of experience. So it wasn't a conscious effort to compare him to these guys because I could care less how he compares to one or two guys - I weant to see how he does against everyone. But one of the reasons for doing analysis is to find possible reasons why a certain outcome happened. And in this case it turns out that amount of experience appears to be a valid explanation.

Bill...let me translate...

"when the FINS are PERFECT @ every postion....and when the ball bounces our way EVERY TIME....like 2008....

then you objective guys are gonna have to eat some crow....maybe"....

just wait...

Name calling, personal insults and no contribution to the discussion of Dolphins football. What is wrong with a person that would waste time coming on here to abuse people? I didn't know they allowed the special people computer access in the asylum? Dr. Canosa can you help?

You know you've arrived in life when you have stalkers ...

One more thing Mark

Proud of u coming out

not only Gay

but also saying ur bipolar

have a HAARPy day ;)

Kris we spent 90million on offense this year? REALLY....please tell us how? The FACT remains that in 2013, as I said, we will spend less than $40million on the offense. FACT.

I understand where you are coming from Mark....

but in your last few post (with stats) the QBs you name by name are...Luck, 3, Wilson, and Kaep....

SO that is were I get that from....

Shaun, Kris and fellow suffering finfans: Stop Blaming the Damn Players! Look at the issue, now, last year and the years past!! C O A C H I N G! This staff is the weakest in the league, in our Franchise History, and in my mind the entire 44 years of being a fan. As a four sport referee and official (I base the event and the eventual outcomes on the staffs of each team.) I have seen very few negative results from the experienced staffs vs. inexperienced, favor the experienced. The staff Philbin has hired is a sad excuse for a D-2 college team to rely on,let alone a Pro team. We have 13 of 17 coaches with no pro playing or coaching experience, and what they do have they received from Off.Cord M. Sherman- whom if we visit his resume has been cut loose from many teams and the next staff steps in and creates a championship team. Tex A.M. in one year, has Heisman Trophy winner, best Q.B. in the D-1 and a top National/SEC Contender!! In one year! Dont hate the players, Tannehill is a W.R. for the collegiate career at Tex A.M. except 1 1/2 years and he is a #1 Draft pic? his Q.B. coach has a grand total of 2 years collegiate experience at North Carolina-- ACC power house? who is Zac Taylor? Heisman Candidate? NOT!Ireland and the Sherminator has created this mess with the horse crap collection of want to be coaches for a storied Franchise! Look up the Pats Staff, all average 10 yrs NFL experience not INEXPERIENCE!

Bill...not this year,,,but in total....

60 MIL for Wallace...

25 Mil for Hartline...

were already @ 85 MIL....and we haven't even talked about Gibson....and Keller....

as a matter of fact...the # is probably ober 100 MIL....

you seriously didn't know this....

C'mon Kris you seriously don't think we are paying $60 million in 2013 for Wallace now do you? FACT remains we spent less than $40 million TOTAL on offense in 2013. That is one of the lowest offensive payrolls in the entire NFL. I know that this fact does not fit your opinion that Tannehill sucks because he is a bad QB. But I guess you shouldn't let facts get in the way of your theory? Fact remains still that Tannehill does not have talent around him. He has shown that when he gets the talent he needs he will be better than 3, Wilson and Kap!!

Gibson....

9.78....

Without Keller....

60 Mil Wallace
30 Mil Hartline (rounding down)
10 Mil Gibson (rounding up)
-------------------------------------
100 MIL

100 MIL on the Offence....

The Ball is in your court BILL.....

Patterson ruled out for Sunday after aggrevating the injury.

Just keeps getting better don't it? Don't count on this guy all year. $5 mil down the tubes.

whats worse than gronk is Edelman and amendola in the slot. They are quick shifty guys that jimmy Wilson has covering. That's the real problem mando.

Bill...

Stop trying to twist facts....

When you first came on here...I thouht you were a serious poster....the other day you accused Phins 78 o the EXACT same thing you are doing now...refusing to admit you are wrong....

This FO (BRASS) spent money....and spent it on guys who they believe will be here in the future....

This is your reciveing core for the next 2.5 years....Maybe they bring in another...but I doubt we cut one...which means they will only ADD t that 100 MIL bill...Wallce won't be cut or traded for @ least 2.5 years...imo....

not twsting....not insulting....but you are wrong on this one....

Its time for some of that CROW you want so badly to serve up....

I'm not saying he's a lock franchise QB by any means, but I dont understand how several here are discussing Tannehill's shortcomings while barely mentioning (in some cases) or glossing over the fact that his Oline is awful, and on pace to give up a record number of sacks (by alot).....how much can you knock the kid when this already has affected him and is clearly affecting him more in recent games....physically and mentally I'm sure--did is running for his life and gonna take a beating, and knows it going into the game--and the fact that he's struggling is surprising?--and alot of that falls on him?--are you serious? How confident can he be setting his feet, taking his time, going through his progression....knowing that he has 2 seconds to do that (sometimes less)? He can certainly imrpove, without question, but I'm not sure how much ANY QB could accomplish playing behind this line, week in and week out.

Yes, you're right. He put the site back up at DolphinsTruth dot com. Check it out.

Kris, we only have so much space to effectively communicate here so things get misinterpreted or not communicated effectively. It happens...

crickets....

OK Bill....

We will put your serving off to the side for later....

True Mark....

I think I have writers cramp now...

Syll laughing from the Van Wilder thing....

still....

Ansparger, you should know Home-O is a very special individual. Only person known to have such a pathetic life that he continually harasses and tries to bully people online that never even acknowledge his existence to the point where he's been kicked off of the two biggest Dolphins blog - The Herald and the Sun Sentinel. In fact, he is so deranged and retarded that they changed the blog format on his account to the point where it severly diminishes any useful dialogue between fans.

The real Dr. Canosa would have a lifetime of work with that chap.

Kris and Bill, ur both right but speaking diferent languages.

Kris is talking total contracts and Bill is talking salaries for 2013.

Kris, seriously, what a maroon that guy is.

Interesting how Fire Ross and Home-O show up at the same time...

And how Fire Ross starts insulting me then disappears and Home-O takes up the cause ...

Interesting patterns, no?

And neither claim to be Daytona is quickly becoming the Kaiser Sauze of this blog? he's always here but nobody is him.

WHO IS DAYTONA?!?!?!

Is Mark in Toronto Tannehill's grandma?

NO Mark....

that is semantics @ 3:11.....

These are the recievers...and those are the saleries I posted....this year next year...WHATEVER YEAR...they were all just signed THIS YEAR....

100 MIL for WRs alone...not countin Kellers one year contract....

my point....this FO spent money..and NOT on stop gaps....but the people who they believe will be here for a few years...

Nothing wrong with being on the wrong side of the argument...the problems start when you can't admit it....

I look forward to MY CROW....if Tanne gets us to the playoffs....

No way in hell are the FIns beating Brady in Foxborough. Not gonna happen. The following week we'll be 3-5 with five consecutive losses. Only prayer we have is tnat following yet another disappointing season, Jeff Ireland will be gone despite his top secret contract extension. Empty stadium seats will dictate.

The difference in these 2 coaching staffs is NE will create mismatches on both sides of the ball, and fully exploit them. And please change the snap count.

This team NEEDS a Marino-like clutch type QB. Tanneflop is not.

Phins78,

Agreed.

The constant argument getting repeated is "Ridiculous". WE GET THE POINT!! You don't like that person. Whether it is Tannehill, Philbin, or Ireland. WE GET IT!!

AND IT ISN'T EVEN LIKE THE POINT IS VALID. JUST BECAUSE YOU SEE SOMETHING A CERTAIN WAY DOESN'T MAKE IT A FACT!!

And NO Kris I am not talking about you. Except with the Tannehill thing it is getting pretty redundant.

But Seriously!! It isn't Dashi just being the #1 Homer. It is Dashi tired of scrolling thru pages of the same Blasphemy.

With that said, Great Post Odin. Totally Agreed we are 1 year away from being highly competitive for a long time. I will hold some of my judgement on Coyle til then. Heck, we aren't even at the Half way point of this season for me to be already making up my mind on what this team is and will become. We can just as easily go 11-5 as we can go 7-9 this season.

This weekend is our test. This weekend we find out how far we have come and how much more we need to go. Can't Wait!!

Kris I stopped answering you because you don't know how to read. READ WHAT I WROTE!!
2013....yes 2013 the Dolphins are spending less than $40 million in cap/salary on the offense. That is the least of ANY other NFL team.
When the Dolphins brass want to get serious about winning a championship they will have to commit more $$ which equals talent to that side of the ball. Until then Tannehill will appear to be talentless. He is not Marino. He does not make lesser players around him better. Please don't answer this post Kris. You have an anti Tannehill agenda.

Dashi....

I respect that....

and I tell you who can change it (besides me)....

Tanne...

Win this week...and even with a mediocre showing....he gets the benifit of the doubt...lose...and the fine tooth comb comes out to scrape those warts....

that makes me softer than our coach...

He told us ALL that @ 3-0....the play on the feild was UNSUSTAINABLE...and 4 weeks later...he is proven right...

I will not leave Tanne alone...until his play warrants it...and I get that the line is bad...I get that the run game could be better...but I also know...that as a leader...if things don't go right...then I shoulder the blame for my people....

I expect nothing less from the QB...the default leader of the players...

Bill...

I'm not anti-Tanne...

I'm anti-losing....an i'm a FINS FAN...talk about oxy-moron (have @ it Daytona)....

and Bill...I read what you wrote...and I understand it well enough to know semantics when I read it...

Your not gonna own it...fine...

I did go to far with the "i thought you were a good poster" stuff....

you ARE a good poster...and a great addition to the blog...

but I stand by the #s on this one...and semantics aside....you are on the wrong side of this one....

Dashi Im with you I think we are 1 year and a great off season, like last, from being a consistent winner. The one area that Ireland has excelled at is the salary cap. We will have close to $40 million under the cap again next year. So if we send more money on the offense this spring and get the talent that Tannehill needs around him then a lot of peeps will need to eat some crow!!

You are never going to get your point across when a person doesn't think the O-Line is important to the success of an Offense. Doesn't matter if every former player and coach says the game is won up front.

The skill position players on both sides of the ball won't succeed unless the guys upfront do their job. Plain and Simple. Not saying that you need an All World line to be great. But you need a line that does its job.

REMEMBER!!

More guys Block than go out on routes on almost any given play. Specially when the O-line isn't good.

More than Half the Fumbles T-Hill has you can blame on the line. I blame the QB for a fumble when he is outside the pocket or running, or when he fumbles a snap or a handoff. When you are in the pocket and have your eyes down field it is very easy to fumble when you get crushed with a Blindside hit. And Yes even the Right Side is the Blind side when you are looking 20,40 yds down field.

Kris are you debating this just to debate bro? This is not semantics. Its a fact that the 2013 Dolphins are spending LESS on offense than any other team $38million to be exact. Its a fact that Tannehill is not good enough to carry a team. Its a fact that Tannehill needs more talent around him in order to be successful. Its a fact that Tannehill is not Marino.
Yu are one of the decent bloggers on here so I am a little surprised that you cannot understand these facts. So I have to think you are just debating to debate.

Daytona it's alright, you just have to know how to treat him. The only reason we limited Gonzo is that we double covered him in the 2nd half. Gronkowsky = and still he will have his catches. Worry more, like slam said above, by the slot guys getting into soft zones. Brady will hit them 100% of the time.

Dashi exactly....not to mention most teams with a bad line can hide that with a good run game, a good TE or good possession WR. We have given Tannehill no tools the last 2 years. Wallace would be a good add if we had a good line or good run game.

We can look at a lot of different things, but the key to the game will be the game plan Coyle puts in place. The mickey mouse offense will put some points up, and cannot do it at the end of a game. So Coyle will need his defense to play well. Unfortunately Coyle is a child in a mans world when it comes to defenses.

I guess my question will and always be why did Miami let get rid of Reggie Bush and Brandon Marshall? Look at Reggie now and Marshall...I think instead of harping on Tannehill and the o-line the focus should be talk about how good our defense is with the pieces that allowed os to win 3 games. Miami is not ready to be an offensive power house even with a better O-line. Defense wins games! GO DOLPHINS!

Bill....

Clearly we are not going to see this the same....

the recievers (barring a catasrophic injury) will be the same...

As I am writing this...they actually give Ireland the oppertunity to draft the next #1 or #2 WR...and develop him....

If we sign one in FA...it will be a 2nd..and most likely 3rd tier guy...no splash @ the WR postion....

So...

next year...if they make MORE money (from the contract)...or less money (from the contract)...they will STILL be the same guys....and the toyal of their contracts...should they play them out....is 100 MIL....and the only one who might not due that is Wallace....because his will be more inflated....

Money aside....these are the ones that brought us to the dance....these are the WRs for the next few years.....

and If you don't get that...then there is nothing more that I can say....

Recapp...

FINS RECIEVERS wirth 100 MIL...

FINS RECIEVERS NOT CHANGING....

Kris, no doubt they invested heavily in the WRs in the offseason... and we should eb set there for a few years but the offensive rebuild is not done yet, at least I hope not because we can't function with the current offensive tackles. Not unless Aaron Rodgers falls from the sky.

Kris,

T-Sizzle can go 20-25 300+yds 3 TDs 0 INTs. And you still will complain about him missing 5 passes. Then you will say that you need to see him do it again and again to prove you wrong.

Tannehill is completing over 65% of his passes. Thru more TDs the last game to WRs than he did all of 2012.

Accuracy? Really!!

Tannehill has Accuracy and knows how to switch velocity on his passes which is something that all Great QBs need to have. Never mind T-Hill has a Cannon. The guy flicked the ball 60+ yds at the end of the game with almost zero effort.

Also, have any of you thought maybe the coaches have told Tannehill we prefer you get a Sack than throw an INT. Reason he holds on to the ball. And he isn't holding on to the ball too long. The O-line doesn't give him enough time to throw.

When a team can get a Sack with only 3 or 4 guys rushing the problem is on the O-line not the QB.

Everybody knows that the key to this Game is our pass rush and the time Brady gets to throw.

2013 Salaries by position:

Guards $8,032,552
RT $4,766,666
WR $7,643,403
QB $5,859,205
Center $2,525,371
LT $2,230,568
RB $2,412,417
TE $1,757,127

Jaaay-sus, one more draft? How times have we've heard that?
Or all we need is (fill in the blank) players on (fill in the blank defense or offense).
I've been a fan since '69 and heard that tune way too many times.

Oscar...

good points....

Dashi, I agree, I like Tannehill but he needs to have better pocket awareness and learne to throw the ball away. Yes the O-LINE sucks but Tannehill at times does not have a clue he is about to get hit.

Mark in Toronto loved Chad Henne, too.
