« Dolphins acquire LT Bryant McKinnie | Main | Mike Sherman addresses the 'play call,' other things »

What did the Dolphins get in Bryant McKinnie?

We've known the for nearly a week the Dolphins have been looking for an offensive lineman in trade and now that they got Bryant McKinnie the question that resonates is, what exactly did they get?

"He is a proven and experienced player who will be a great addition to the offensive line," general manager Jeff Ireland said in a statement.

"Bryant McKinnie was a good player at one time but he stinks now," a former NFL coach told me today.

Bryant McKinnie is 34 years old and was once a dominating NFL left tackle. He never allowed a sack at the University of Miami. He had one holding call his entire two seasons at UM -- against Dwight Freeney.

And he was outstanding playing for the Minnesota Vikings from 2003 to 2009, including his Pro Bowl selection in '09. But there are other things that mitigate McKinnie being a great player back in the day, so to speak, and even a good player now.

Well, there's the partying for one.

In October 2005, McKinnie was charged with a misdemeanor for his involvement in the infamous  Minnesota Vikings boat cruise scandal that involved hookers and drugs and violence.

On May 26, 2006, McKinnie pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and being a public nuisance on a watercraft in connection with the Love Boat scandal. He agreed to pay a $1,000 fine and perform 48 hours of community service. The NFL fined McKinnie one game check for the incident.

In 2008 McKinnie was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after an incident at Miami's Club Space. Police said McKinnie spit in the face of a bouncer when he was removed from the club, then, after heading across the street to another establishment, returned to the club and argued with the bouncer. McKinnie then allegedly shoved his phone in Otero's face before picking up a heavy pole and hitting him. A judge ordered McKinnie to complete 25 hours of community service and anger management classes.

McKinnie's hard partying is legendary in NFL circles. He's been known for spending $100,000 on a bar tab in one night.

McKinnie's love of strip clubs is also well known. McKinnie was kicked off the 2010 Pro Bowl roster after partying too much in South Beach and missing practices.

Is he a Joe Philbin-type player? Absolutely not.

But the Dolphins are desperate. McKinnie can move in as the left tackle -- the position he's played all his professional life -- and they can move Jonathan Martin to right tackle, which is the position he played last year.

McKinnie, not exactly a try-hard guy so far this year, has nonetheless given up only one sack in 2013. So that is indeed an upgrade.

But does he come with warts? Yes.

Arnsparger is ETF.

We will start winning when we get rid of the last of the tuna smell

There is no science to the GM/coaching dynamic. There are different personalities and approaches. I feel that adaptibility is critical for the increased chance of success for a GM and coaching staff. Sometimes replacing only one component (i.e. o-coordinator) can prove to be the overarching move that positively changes the dynamic.

I agree with Phins78 that uprooting the entire staff would equal many steps back. The owner needs to have an advisor (other than the GM) who assesses what is working with the team and what is not working. The process could begin by conducting individual, non-reprisal interviews with players and coaches to help identify where unapparent shortfalls exist. We can all see where the shortfalls on the field exist, but finding out who is the causal factor for impeding progress is another matter.

DON'T BE SURPRISED IF HENNE GETS TRADED TO CHI OR STL

He's a FA anyway and Jax needs draft picks. He's thrown for 4000 yds in past 13 starts, look it up.

ExposingTheFraud | October 21, 2013 at 08:01 PM

If they could get anything Mid-Rd for him they'd be FOOLISH not to take it! In Chi-Town though Brandon Marshall might have a meltdown if this happened. I'd BET the farm Marc Trestman WOULD ask his ALPHA WR about Henne and ETF I don't see your boy getting a ringing endorsement and they probably go conservative with Josh McCown till Cutler comes back late Season! St Louis might be a different story on the flipside were BFF J.Long will tell his H.C. all about how the Dolphins wasted his talent and they really have NOTHING behind the often injured CAP # NIGHTMARE that is Sam (The Un-Trade-able) Bradford.

Ok Phins78 youre a man of your word. I respect that. I hope you now admit that this regime is not the answer and must go. We have some semblance of talent right now and they need to be coached up. As I stated earlier a good coach would have this team 5-1 today. Those 2 losses were in last minute and did not have to be.

It is funny that they spent the bye week thinking things were going to change with clabo. Could have had McKinnie then, game would have been so different.

And Turner is starting to piss me off. This oline coach, always making excuses, get rid of him.

"He (Clabo) only allowed two sacks" ' he played a great game'. Yeah? Then why is he being benched and we just had to trade for someone competent? How about all of the hits and hurries he allowed? That doesn't count?

McKinnie?
I think it's a little to late plus McKinnie is all washed up! You see upgrade
Yes but what instead of 8 sacks he will give up 7.. HAHAHAHAHAHA! Jeff is a joke McKinnie is so great why he didn't get him when he was a F/a and not give up a draft pick! JI IS A JOKE OF A GM. IDIOT IT WILL BITE HIM ON THE A S S YOU SEE!

I am not ETF....why do fools always acuse me of being somebody Im not. Get a life loser. I argued with ETF for two days!! Ignore yo mamma!!

Dog Water Ross already has that person from outside advising him. Its his bff Peterson formerly f the Chiefs!! You can advise all you want the problem is 6yrs old no matter how you try to sweep it under the rug the problem is with upper mgmt. making poor decisions.

"I hope you now admit that this regime is not the answer and must go."

Nope. You want me to be onboard with firing a head coach who has had one full season to change the entire culture of a losing team? Bill,,,,Billl,,,,never going to happen.

I give coaches the same time I give qbs and even a little more. The guy needs 3 to 4 years to change the incompetence of the Dolphins.

Everyone acts as if this team was all set when Philbin came aboard? HELLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO?!!! WTF was the Sparano team a dream or something?

They sucked so bad and we barely have half of the players left from that team. Philbin had to dismantle the players, (just started this offseason by the way) Hire all new coaches, install the west coast offense for the first time in Dolphins history, and change from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3 defense.

This whole process just started and you want to throw him out the door? lmao you can't be serious.

so while other teams draft there Manziels...and Bridgewaters....and Marriottas....and mid round sensations....we hold tight...hoping Tanne gets to the next level....and then he never does....

Kris | October 21, 2013 at 07:37 PM

If Marcus Marriota were at our pick in RD-2 next Yr. I'd take him, if gone and Stephen Morris there RD-3 I'd take him or the Georgia QB, JMO! It won't happen given they go with Moore as the back-up (under contract in 2014) giving Tannehill the 3rd Yr. but in 2015 if were not deep in the Playoffs then trade the house, farm kitchen sink and a few players for good measure on Jameis Winston.

That is a very insightful post, Dog Water, and certainly that approach of selective weeding out of one bad component of the whole Team's dynamic and how to go about it, could work in our favor. It certainly worked last year in Baltimore when they fired Cam Cameron mid-season. Thank you.

Turner's ignorant comment represents that lack of adaptability I mentioned earlier. The downfall for a coaching staff is blind allegiance to their players and staff. This is a business, not a social network. A coach needs to assess players based on productivity alone. A coach can be be friends with a player, but that player may not be on the team if he is not producing. Turner's comment also reflects a "big picture" mindset. The two sacks look small when compared to the other snaps where Clabo did not allow a sack in the game. In actuality, when Clabo was isolated, he allowed two game changing sacks. He should not start against New England.

The book on Tanne has not been written. Only a fool can't see he has tons of upside. If we cut Tannehill, you'll see some top team scoop him him.

Most GM's are not nearly as dumb as most fans.

We were 7-9 team under Sporano and were still a 7-9 team. Philbin will never be a winning head coach. He has no fire. So if you were the owner you stick with a guy for 4 maybe 5 yrs and then make the switch...Business don't work that way Pal. He is a poor field General, made poor coaching choices such as Sherman and Coyle. Its not like we have seen any improvement...in fact we have gone backwards in Offensive and defensive rankings. That's why I say this is the 100% wrong guy.

Will help a little, but Tannehill is still the problem and the mickey mouse offensive scheme. You want to salvage the season, then put Matt Moore in, that will open up the offense a lot more.

G%$ damnit why doesn't Philbin have this team at the top of the league at 5-1!

He had a whole year to change the players to fit the new scheme and get everyone on the same page! New players, new coaches, new offense, new defense, offseason, more new players. This team should be running like a well oiled machine by now!!

Seriously guys, come on already. We were told by everyone in the world all of these guys from this season would need time to gel. You give them 6 games and you give up on them. I hope the players and coaches aren't quitting because they are still in the thick of the afc east race and about to play a team ahead of them. They are one game out of first and everyone wants to throw in the towel?

I f%$#ing swear this is pathetic, what kind of fans are we?!

just gets uglier and uglier around here. it took u waiting through the bye and another awful loss to realize u had to make move? and this is it? seasons over now, why waste a pick on anything

Great post dog water.

Bill I respect your opinion, please don't get me wrong. I just have a different view. I just feel like second time coaches who have already won a ring don't have as much drive. I like the younger hungry guys (like Harbaugh). Ross should have fired Tony first, we would have Harbaugh right now and would probably be pretty happy.

Phins78 | October 21, 2013 at 08:10 PM

NOT A CHANCE IN HELL! The Stanford University Campus is 50 Miles outside of S.F. and Jim has small kids and young Wife rooted in Cali. The stop before Stanford was the Oakland Raiders which is of course across the Bay. He used Ross to gain leverage on York (player personnel power) We may NEVER know if true or not but reported or leaked we offered RECORD DEAL for H.C. which 49ers didn't match. It was a ploy by Harbaugh to get what he wanted by the Bay out West were he wanted to stay all along!

phins78 again, doesnt matter where they are in standings. u have eyes, u watch them. this team is awful. miamis best chance is to play every game on road cause they play much better. they sleep walk through every pathetic home game with 5000 people in that dreadful empty stadium. sad seeing us the worst franchise in nfl now. sad to say but ross should move team, they are done in miami

to be honest with you guys, i dont think fixing our offensive line will fix anything with our offense. the problem is SHERMAN. almost all of his pass plays are where our guys are only running routes that are ten or less yards. our running game will not work because of this and our passing game will not work because of this. the defenses are all pressed up and there is no room to do anything. now what we are seeing are the routes getting jumped because we are not sending anybody down field. and im not talking about just sending wallace on a down field route, im talking about THROWING THE BALL DOWN FIELD. IM TALKING ABOUT AIRING IT OUT. SLOT AND TE RUNNING SEAMS, WR RUNNING POSTS, GOS, AND 20 YRD IN CUTS. all of these other teams are throwing the ball down field. you cant be an effective offense when you are throwing the ball 3 yards every play. sherman is ruining tannehill by doing this. the game has passed him by. tanne has a freaking hose for an arm, let him use it. sherman is playing not to lose, and by running his "scared, dont turn the ball over offense" we are doing exactly that, losing. AIR THE FREAKING BALL OUT! if we turn it over so be it, we're turning the ball over already, at least we ll be trying to put points on the board aggressively by attacking the defense.

fin4life morris??? u realize morris be lucky to even be drafted

the number one issue with this team and during the tannehill era continues to be the slow starts

i don't understand why they can't wake up until right before halftime....

it's just a sad situation watching the offense go through the motions for a quarter and a half

the buffalo game was really over before it began

I have to go guys. Bill I enjoyed talking to you but I have one request for the future. The use of the word "pal" seems condescending. I could be wrong, you might just use it as a term of endearment. But it seems like you're talking down to me. Lets just cut that word out of our debates just in case. :)

Also, If Philbin gets the team to 9-7 this year you still want him fired? I don't know why you're convinced they will only win 4 more games. 6 wins is obtainable, lets see what happens shall we?

Here's a fact...the national sports media has articles out there the last 2 weeks stating this coaching staff is the problem. Most Dolphin fans know this coaching staff is the problem. Once again everybody cannot be wrong. Come seasons end when we are 6-10 will you then still want to give this staff another year?

"He (Clabo) only allowed two sacks" ' he played a great game'. Yeah? Then why is he being benched and we just had to trade for someone competent?

Posted by: Phins78 | October 21, 2013 at 08:17 PM

Have you forgotten it is a business??? You are going to speak your guys up hoping to get something for them, that tell the world they are trash even if they are.

JUST SAW THE INTERVIEW OF PHILBIN ON THE FINSIDERS..YOU THINK THAT GUY IS REALLY INTO IT WITH ALL THAT HE'S BEEN THRU..NO EMOTION..2 THINGS I SEE OF HIM..1.HE'S A GUY WHO GIVES A LOT OF POWER AND SAY TO HIS COACHES...2..HE'S A OLD SCHOOL GUY WHO EXPECTS HIS PLAYERS TO BE READY AND BE SELF MOTIVATED AND SHOULD KNOW WHAT TO DO...THAT DOESN'T WORK IN THE NFL NOW OR NEVER..UNLESS YOU GOT A PEYTON MANNING OR BRADY..OR STEVE YOUNG OR EMMIT SMITH OR IRVIN..THE HEADCOACH HAS TO MOTIVATE HIS PLAYERS CAUSE ONLY GREAT PLAYERS ARE SELF MOTIVATED ..GUYS WITH EGOS..AND THIS GUY IS NOT UP TO THE JOB. THANKS MIKE DEE.

Dusty I keep seeing you repeat this, "the seasons over now".

Dude, so defeatist. Go look up how many 3-3 teams ended with a winning record and tell me why we can't do the same. Come on guys for f$#ks sake, art least be as good as Jets fans will ya? Can you support your team a little? Bills and Browns fans do it and they have never done anything. No super bowl rings, no playoffs in over a decade, and their fans don't give up when they are 3-3. 3-3 IS NOT SEASON OVER WHAT THE F$#K IS GOING ON IN HERE. I'm out.

He comes in overweight and probably out of shape. And, there's no telling how long it will take him to get up to speed with the playbook. I expect we'll see Clabo at RT until McKennie shows he can handle LT...

phins 78 id much rather lose all remaining games then go another worthless 9-7. tired of pointless wins late in season that mean not a thing

This team seems to have taken on Philbin's personality. They play lethargic, uninspired and slow. Maybe they need someone with a little fire in the belly.

Some of you will NEVER figure out that coaches and GM's will NEVER tell you anything worthwhile. It is nothing but media obligation.

Post at 6:37 nailed it.

Phins78, there has to be a ceiling. My biggest grievance is with Sherman. Every week, we consistently hear about the suspect play calling. Last year, it took Sherman 15-weeks to learn how to use Reggie Bush. This year, thus far, Lamar Miller and Marcus Thigpen (playmakers) are not utilized in a manner to best garner production. How about Wallace? This blog began with discussions over his misutilization too. Wallace's dedication aside, he could be used better. Sherman's press conferences are frustrating to me. He admits there are problems, but every week we never see effective solutions.

I am willing to be patient with Philbin and Tannehill, BUT there needs to be a regular assessment process void of "blind loyalty" that determines where shortfalls exist from week to week. NO ONE's job should be safe. I am sure some semblance of this has already occurred, but Ireland should have provided a comprehensive plan for the Dolphins' improvement to Ross. The plan should have clear steps where improvement will be evident based on Ireland's approach (e.g. draft, free agency, coaching hires, etc). There should be benchmarks where only significant injuries are an excuse for not reaching those benchmarks.

At least to me, Sherman is a glaring shortfall. How the team continues to adjust throughout the remainder of the season will tell me a lot.

Yes Bill, as I have said , I give coaches 3 to 4 years to install their system and get their players. Sparano got 4 years but Philbin only gets two? Why? He's a much better coach than Sporano could ever be.

Now Im not leaving and have a challenge for you. Please produce these articles that state Philbin is a problem. I'll wait.

PS I don't want to see one thing from Omar Kelly. He thinks he's a player, he sides with the players on every issue because he is star struck and has a problem with authority. He's been this way ever since he got the job covering the fins. Hates every coach because they don't kiss his a#@. Loves the players because he wants to be one. If there are multiple reports surely you can leave Omars opinion out of it.

9-7 is progress Dusty. Then you go 10-6 or 11-5. Then you hit the 12 win seasons. It's all progress. You want them to regress so they can progress? That makes no sense in any way, shape, or form.

Oh and by the way, Kevin Coyle is a disgrace to let so many 3rd and long plays go for first downs. If a team needs 15 yards on 3rd, guaranteed they will get it. No one has called out Coyle on his game plans. He is consistently out coached. Dolphins have good players on defense. The schemes are just as bad as Sherman;s schemes.

"He is a proven and experienced player who will be a great addition to the offensive line," general manager Jeff Ireland said in a statement.

"Bryant McKinnie was a good player at one time but he stinks now," a former NFL coach told me today.

AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHA

JEFF IRELAND STRIKES AGAIN.

HOW DO YOU REPLACE POOP!?!??! WITH MORE POOP!!!!

CONTRACT EXTENDED- CHECK
NOT ONE IMPACT DRAFT PICK - CHECK
NOT ONE GOOD FA PICKUP- CHECK

5-11 SEASON - CHECK

phins 78 u still dont get, who cares what the record is, u watch them with your own eyes. u think this is a playoff team? no its a last place team in own div so i dont want 8 meaningless wins, much rather go 3-13

dusty is a negative nancy.

I've seen a lot of negative posts about the Dolphins today.........and here's another one!

Phins78
SUPPORT THE F U C KING TEAM!
I'VE BEEN SUPPORTING THIS TEAM FOR DECADES AND STILL SAME S H I T. ONLY SHULA EAS THE REAL DEAL!! EVERYONE ELSE FAILED. BUT JI IS THE WORST OUT OF ALL OF THEM. NO WE AINT WINNING CRAP OF TIRED OF SUPPORTING GARBAGE DUDE IT'S TIME TO CLEAN HOUSE AGAIN AND GET RID OF THE PARCELLS DISEASE ALREADY
NO SENSE IN THE TRADE THE GUY IS OUT OF SHAPE AND OLD. IM TIRED OF THE SAME EXCUSES OUT OF YOU HOMERS. IT'S TIME TO START OVER NEXT YEAR. ROSS WAS ON TO SOMETHING WITH JIM HARBAUGH BUT IT BACK FIRED BECAUSE OF JI...NO ENOUGH IS ENOUGH TIME TO CLEAN HOUSE AGAIN BEFORE IT GETS WORST!

"Look at SF. They were on the bottom of leaque for several years. Through drafting & time, that team rose to the top."

6:37

That's funny because according to some people in here these things happen over night. No team is bad to mediocre for a while, builds a program, gets better, drafts young players, gets better, then finally arrives. According to some in here other teams are just really bad, make no moves at all to get better. All they do is hire a new head coach and POOF! Lookee here last year they sucked and now their awesome because of the coach! Why can't we do that?! HA!

phins78 if only it worked that way. it doesnt. go 2-14 get first pick and last place schedule and new staff and go from 2-14 to 7-0 start, ahhh thats kc damn

fin4life morris??? u realize morris be lucky to even be drafted

dusty bottoms | October 21, 2013 at 08:33 PM

The same OC that got so little out of EJ Manuel at FSU was inexplicably hired by Golden after our OC in 2012 left. Morris is dropping fast (draft stock) but the talent is there. If you watch UM Football at all you saw/seen the miss-use of the T.E. and even the Duke. HORRID Play calling seems contagious in S.Fla the last decade between the Fins with the Stache, Sabanm Cam and Sporano to Sherman and in the U from Coker to Shannon on down!

Obviously this is just a band aid. The Dolphins have to keep their young QB healthy the rest of the season. McKinney is a horrible run blocker but he is a much better pass protector than Clabo and that is what is important now. Let's face it after losing to putrid Buffalo at home with their practice QB the season is over. I cannot see us sniffing the playoffs. However, right not it is all about getting through the season without continuing to hurt Tannehill's confidence or even worse him suffering a season ending injury.

Next year will be all about finding pass protection for Tannehill. We have to sell out on finding adequate blocking next year. This year is about trying to run Philbin's offense and keeping Tannehill healthy.

GU YS, please give mike sherman a break at his age just like dan henning he needs to change his depends diaper at crirical times so he misses play calls. He needs to get mike Martz the greatest show on torf to cover for him so the poor old man does not get his bum chaffed.Learn some compassion for guys that shouls be in a nursing home.Watch Joe philbin on the sidelines,HE LOOKES LIKE HE DROOLES.

PHINS78 - YOU ARE SO SAD

THE REASON SF IS GREAT IS CUZ THEY DRAFT GREAT!!!

LOOK AT THE LAST TWO DRAFTS BY JEFFY THE BUTTFACE-

NOT ONE IMPACT PLAYER. NOT ONE!!!

THIS LAST DRAFT Was A JOKE - NOT EVEN ONE IMPACT PLAYER INCLUDING A THIRD OVERALL PICK.

HAHAHAHAH

A JOKE

I wonder if idiot Armando has learned that while LT's don't score touchdowns, they help other players score touchdowns.

His argument was well we can't name the LT on every team so therefore they are not important. How dumb is that?

I am not sure that is a fair representation. Most people would have agreed that San Francisco and Seattle had good core players. It is a very inexplicable coincidence that both teams began producing under new coaches. Sometimes that might be the answer. That is not to say that replacing Philbin will make the Dolphins reach their full potential. It is to say that regularly assessing shortfalls gives a team a better chance to make effective changes. The key, as I have stated, is to remove all friendship and emotion from the process. I don't know that San Fran or Seattle knew coaching changes would lead to their current success, but the results are indisputable.

sherman is clearly the problem. 1. no game planning. we are not attacking the defenses weaknesses. 2. no creativity. same plays every week. no changes, no wrinkles, no attempt to get the ball in our playmakers hands. 3. the game has changed, shermans offense has not. the rules allow you to throw the ball down field with ease now, we are not even attempting to do so. defenses dont want offenses to spread them out and attack and we re playing right into their hands. we are running 3 and 5 yard routes every play. the defenses are pressed and playing in a ten yard bubble, they ve studied us, they know we are not sending are receivers down field.

has everone else noticed the cadence is the same very play as well. go go! that doesnt help protecting our QB either. oh yeah one more thing. TEMPO! we never change tempo ever! tannehill seems to be good when we run a bit of a hurry up offense ( another thing a defense doesnt want you to do) , and we never do it. i mean all of this stuff blows my mind. its like offensive football 101. it makes me sick. sherman needs to go now. and i dont know what kind of influence philbin has on in game offense, but he has to be questioned as well.

maybe fin4life but u can have morris in 6th rd not 3rd. not that i would ever want him, has an arm nothing else

I told you about Henne...but I guess you probably made the same Sanchez argument when I was proving you wrong on that one...

Kris

Just saw this. You told me about Henne? I don't think so Kris. I must be misunderstanding you. Are you saying something about today or 5 years ago? What did you tell me about Henne that I didn't know?

Dude what is it, a team game or an individual game? "Sanchez this, Sanchez that Sanchez did play in two afc championships and how many have the fins been to?"

Sanchez went to two straight championships on the backs of a great defense and running game with a 9-7 record one year. They needed two teams to lose the last game to make the playoffs. Are you crediting Sanchez with that or the team?

So you're defeating your own point Kris. If STINKING F$#@ING Sanchez who sucks so bad he has regressed every year went to two championships backed by a great team why can't Tannehill who has improved from year one to year two do the same thing???!!! Oh my God wtf! This is like the twilight zone.

Now you're backing stinking dirty Sanchez while trashing your own qb, who has far more skills and athleticism than sanchez could ever dream of having? Why do you hate Tannehill so much. Its' so obvious now, YOU ARE TOTALLY BIASED AGAINST THIS KID! LMAO

love thill. cant take another minute of ireland

Greg you make some great points but I will counter with this. It is a west coast offense and west coast offenses are known for short quick passing.

You're right , we need to go deep to keep receivers from jumping the routes, but if the oline can't hold a block for longer than a couple of seconds no one is able to get deep. The fastest guy on our team runs a 4.4/ 40. 4 seconds to get 40 yards. If the qb is getting pressured after 2 seconds the receiver is only 20 yards down the field at best. I don't think those are the long passes you're talking about. I'm assuming you mean 50 yards or more.

If anyone missed it. Please go to nfl.com, type in Tannehill fumbles against Buffalo, and then count how long it takes for the lber and dlinemen to be in his face. (don't count on the slo mos)

Also watch how Daniel Thomas is literally picked up in the air and thrown into Tannehill.

Its the QB stupid eh?
