About that voice mail again ... new information

On its face it is horrible. It is offensive. It sounds racist.

The voice mail Richie Incognito left Jonathan Martin in April is at the center of the public distaste for the Dolphins guard. The transcript indeed paints a picture of a bullying veteran using racial epithets against a younger player and threatening that youngster's life:

"Hey, wassup, you half-n----r piece of (expletive). I saw you on Twitter, you been training 10 weeks. I'll (expletive) in your (expletive) mouth. I'm gonna slap your (expletive) mouth, I'm gonna slap your real mother across the face. (laughter). (Expletive) you, you're still a rookie. I'll kill you."

Except ...

The voice mail which Martin kept was later played in the Dolphins locker room around a group of players ... And Martin was the one who played it, according to two players. And he joked about it.

"This is the same guy that was laughing about this voice mail at one point in time, first of all," receiver Brian Hartline said of Martin. "Second of all, I believe that if you look through the whole voice mail, there's some things said that you probably shouldn't say in general, friends or not friends. But I know for a fact, that I've said things to my friends that I kind of wish I've never said, either."

There's another thing. According to a source close to Incognito, the transcript of the voice mail is not complete. It omits the last line.

After Incognito went on this apparent diatribe, his voice softens, and matter-of-factly he says, "Ok, call me back."

And ... Martin called him back, the source said.

Does this release Incognito from the racially charged words? No.

Do this add context? Yes.

Mike Florio reported that Jeff Ireland when confronted by Martin's agent about Incognito's treatment of Martin. Ireland told Martin's agent to have J. Martin punch Incognito.

Great news; Ireland could be gone due to this response. It says to Martin's agent that the GM would not do anything about the bullying.

promiichelle, stick to badminton and checkers. this stuff is way to complicated for you.

Whats strange is I keep hearing Martin has not accused anyone of anything. Sounds like the man just needed to get his head straight - i have no problem with that.

Could it be that the media is actually the issue here for once digging up all this stuff to make sence of a few personal days?

Richie Incognito's bully reputation goes back to 2002

Brent Schrotenboer, USA TODAY Sports 11:11 a.m. EST November 5, 2013

Story Highlights
Every college or pro team that signed him either cut ties with him, suspended him or both
Incognito and his father have said in interviews that he was bullied as a child for being overweight
A sports psychologist said abuse victims often repeat the cycle of abuse they learned as children

Richie Incognito once bullied a teammate so badly that the teammate suddenly got up from the ground and stomped out of football practice.

It was early 2002 — long before Incognito was accused of similar behavior with the Miami Dolphins. Incognito was just a freshman at Nebraska, but that didn't stop him from picking fights or harassing teammates, in this case a non-scholarship offensive lineman named Jack Limbaugh. Incognito plowed into Limbaugh's back during practice, knocking him to the ground for no apparent reason.

Numbers don't lie.

If Martin doesnt file a big lawsuit he could be our RT for many years to come.

"If Martin was in the military he would probably be much more suited for a G2/Intelligence position considering his background."

Lol. Someone who throws a hissy fit, leaves his team, seeks hospitalization in response to a lunchtime prank, laughingly circulates voicemails which are the basis for his harassment complaint, tattles to his mommy, daddy & attorney about tribal practices which were for tribe eyes only -- is well-suited to work with military intelligence he's SOOO in "control of emotions?"

Lol. Do tell: What army? Grenada?

"... is well-suited to work with military intelligence [because] he's SOOO in "control of emotions?"

"Richie come back,,,you can blame it all,on,me,,,I was wronnnggg,,,and I just can't live without youuuuuuu"

So whatbif Cogs busted his freshman ass! Were you there? Where did you get your 1sthand info? Have you ever met, or talked to Martin, Cogs, or any current Dolphins player about this situation? Ever?

martins folks went to harvard. martin went to stanford.

dolphins won the battle. martin wins the war.

he has been saving all this stuff. he's gonna sure the crap outta the dolphins . get win about 5-7 million in the lawsuit, and leave the retarded world of football with his brain and knees in tact.

Dance puppets dance!

I have posted the same line for a week... And ill do it again..

Take the music out of the movie "JAWS" and watch the film without it.... And all you see is...

This entire story... THE WHOLE DAMNED THING.... Has been built from so called inside "Sources" who refuse to give they're names or stamp they're words by standing up to and by them openly.

Give me a $$-Million or Two-$$ and I'll have 25 people ready to tell you anything you wanna hear... Just don't ask for they're names...

It disgusts me that Armando... and the entire South Florida Media and Dolphins Beat guy's allowed the idea of getting on "TEE-VEE" like the NFL Channel and ESPN to cloud they're better judgement. These guys are here all day every day... I haven't seen ONE PIECE by Armando about how Martin and Incognito are not getting along or how the team seems to have major internal issues.... NOT ONE.... Yet all these guys seem to be in Major back peddle mode when the entire Dolphins locker room say's "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"....

How can these local guys question Tannehill about not seeing anything... or other teammates for not seeing anything.,.. WHEN THEY ARE THERE ENOUGH TO KNOW THEY HAVEN'T SEEN ANYTHING EITHER...???

HEADS UP..... Miami Media.....

You've been PLAYED....!!!!!

You guys backing Incognito sound like members of a cult. What part of the term "half-ni**er" is OK? What part of it is legitimate? And what kind of uncle tom do you have to be as a Black player on the Dolphins supporting Richie Incognito? This guy's a low-class idiot who's a bigot.

Let's put it this way: If someone called President Obama a "half-ni**er", his head would roll. So quit it with defending Incognito. You can't defend the indefensible!

J Martin shouldnt have to give up his career because of A-holes like Incognito.

A lawsuit could bring 50 million.

The best thing we can do against all this s....t, is win next game vs Tampa Bay.

I'm starting to think that maybe there is credence to Martin being a Gaaay. I'm sure he's called a rooster sucker every day. Jokes or not that's gotta wear on a home-oh

Sure he is

hardcore you must not want no asz if you thinking about going out drinking with
Cognito. Have you seen what happened at Dirty Blondies? All the girls ran!

Richie send him text last April, and Martin wait 6 month to do this.
Who believe that.

Lawsuit? HaHaha

If the NFL is stupid enough to give him cash for quitting and a text message, they better expect to pay a lot more.

If a declining player wants to get paid all he has to do is bully a rookie, get kicked out the league, then they both get paid $$.

Martin should just apologize to the Team. Then all will be well...

Uncle Tom? Do McKinney, Pouncey, Wallace, Dasnby, Ocho, John Jerry strike you as Uncle Tom's?! You've obviously never been in a 'brotherhood' type of environment. Another Nancy boy who can't recognize a joke when he sees it.

Moral of the story is Martin is softer than a wet vajayjay

Tampa is going to crush the fins on monday-- WHY, It's monday nite millions of people will be watching the fins always seem to lose. The distraction from all the bad press will distract the team. The Tampa team is looking for it's first win which will make the fins look even worse. So after years of watching the fins perform this way you can see what will happen on monday
I wish it wasn't so i want the team to win and always will but with Jeff on board changes will not happen.

I also don't have any problem at all with Jeff Ireland suggesting getting physical. cuz in reality it might have helped. but of course they will find another way to spin this. Might not be the best response but atleast if he did confront his issues he may grow up.

Hey Chris Carter and Tom Jackson eat crow who really is the racist hmmmm read the the story n not just the first line b4 making ur stupid ass remarks u both owe someone an apology, lets see if they have a bag of balls to do so you both shshould be out of a job if it were hmmmm 2 other races im sure they would be out of a job!!!!!!!

Ecto, what I said was true, you went off and ,called me a moron or idiot. I was right you owe me an apology. I don't expect one from someone who jumps the gun like you did though. I know your kind .

This is a self-serving article that doesn't come close to the truth.

The truth?

Anyone that can root for this disgusting organization is a sick, sick individual.

While the complete transcript may add context, it does not change the fact that what Cogs said was unacceptable in a workplace (or any place).

Also, there has been no report (as of yet) that states that there was no extortion of money from rookies (and Martin) on the Dolphin team.

Workplace rules, regulations and laws are very important - even in the NFL. Context can provide a better understanding, but it does not always change the fundamental facts.

Finally, ProFootballTalk reports that:

"Per multiple league sources, Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland received a call from Martin’s agent, Rick Smith, before Martin left the team on October 28. Smith complained to Ireland about the manner in which Incognito was treating Martin.

Ireland, according to the sources, suggested to Smith that Martin physically confront Incognito. Ireland specifically mentioned that Martin should “punch” Incognito."

Finally, Ireland enters the fiasco. Was there ever any doubt?

IF THIS REPORT IS TRUE, it should be a firing offense. Ireland is suggesting that violence is a way to solve a workplace dispute.

Context can add depth of understanding, but one must remember that the Dolphins as a team want to defend their jobs and status quo - according to published reports, that includes hazing, extortion, racism, slurs, and, now, management endorsement of violence as a tool to resolve employee conflicts. What's next?

How could Ireland be so stupid as to recommend that two men with supposed emotional issues engage in a physical fight?

Ireland should have been fired for his highly improper and offensive questioning of Dez Bryant. Keeping him on has resulted in horrid drafts, subpar FA signings, losing seasons, and now, a national disgrace. A poster child of management stupidity.

I think Sigh hit the nail directly on the head, nice post

drsammi @12:42

I tried to discuss this with my wife last night but she cut me off with a swift, 'ngger please'.

Now that is f'ing funny.

I can't wait for Obama to chime in on this one.

Sigh: RI supporter (multiple IDs)is is missing this big picture. He's done in the NFL. It's too big.

If what Jeff Ireland is reported to have said he should get "high fives" not be fired. Seriously, we are talking about football here, more specifically offensive linemen. If a guy who is 6'5" and well over 300lbs can't take a lunchroom prank and an obscene phone call then he never had any business in this game!

If Richie never put hands on the man or gave him a reasonable threat ( pointed gun, knife at neck, etc.) then he he should be reinstated at once. Martin's dad should've taught his son how to deal with bullies back in grade school.

What, you want to get back to Philosophy, Dashi?

That last line is probabley the best advice you have given ever in your life. Just need to tell all the other media buddies the same thing

Yes, I was born with the silver spoon in my mouth and I have a great Education. Any problem with that?

My situation in this Blog is a great analogy to JMartin's situation in the Miami Dolphins Team. I am surrounded here by People that have infinitely less Education than I have, and many resent me for that fact. The ONLY difference between JMartin's situation and mine here in this Blog is that, at any time I choose, I can walk away from this Tribe here. Was not so easy for Jonathan in his situation.

As someone who thought Martin had potential to be a good LT and thought Cogs should've been replaced this year, I can say I had Martin all wrong. This guy belongs behind a desk, not in football.

Notice none of the other Dolphins players claim Cogs bullied them. Maybe Martin is a victim in his own mind but I think this is clearly B.S. and football is getting too politically correct for its own good.

Sorry but you got it wrong. The ONLY difference is your a blogger and Martin is a pro football player.
Are you trying to tell me that in a job where your whole purpose of playing is to be more physical than the guy across from you, you can quit on your team over a cafeteria prank and a potty mouth phone call? C'mon man, we aren't talking about lawyers or doctors here. We can't hold these guys to that standard and expect them to play aggressively on Sundays.

I'm pretty sure that Jonathan Martin will get back into Football, only this Time, wiser for the experience, he will choose the Team he would like to play for , rather than any Team choosing him.

Even in this Great Country, you can see the mentality that Communism preys on. You drag down the People that are in any way above you, and you'll be happier.

I'm pretty sure that Jonathan Martin will get back into Football, only this Time, wiser for the experience, he will choose the Team he would like to play for , rather than any Team choosing him.

Posted by: oscar canosa | November 07, 2013 at 05:07 AM

I doubt he will ever play again. How could he? Every player he lines up again are going to say worse things to him than Cogs did. Let's face it, mental toughness is extremely important in football and my 2yr old daughter has as much as Martin.

Don't know exactly what they mean by tough. The guy showed up everyday and according to Philbin, worked hard. Anything more you can expect of a Player? The guy is not strong enough?, well, let him work at becoming stronger and if he can't do it and is harming your ball Club, sit him down or release him. If you mean nasty disposition, not everybody has it. You teach an OLinemen with the proper athletic ability the proper techniques and he will not need to be "nastt" or dirty in his Play to become successful.

My opinion....I think Jonathan Martin was okay with what was going on but his family was not. This led to a conflicted Martin leading to emotional distress. To me, that is the only logical explanation to this.

Sure, sure... we know that all the info is not out and more is coming. But it's beginning to look like J Martin was one confused kid.

At least we now have a reason for why the voice mail was saved: not to condemn Incognito but to share the joke. This is at odds with all who think Martin cold-bloodedly plotted to get out of football with a huge paycheck.

I wrote previously that, as Dolphins fans, we viewed the meltdowns of Ricky Williams and Brandon Marshall. Why is it so hard to wrap our heads around the concept that Martin could be seriously suffering from a debilitating mental condition?

No, he didn't make a good RT or LT in the NFL. He wanted to be that, though. He tried. He wasn't the first to fail in the NFL nor the first to unravel upon realization that a life's ambition won't be fulfilled. Have a heart, guys.

Mental toughness? That does not exist in Psychological Pathology and not sure if it exists any where else as everybody has a breaking point. You are talking to a Mental Health professional here that writes under his own name and not just to anybody. Look me up on Internet if you have any doubts. When Mental illness strikes, I tell you, it can bring down the mightiest of the Mightiest. See Junior Seau.

Daily reminder: We don't know the entire story. Please withhold judgment condemning or condoning either side until we know everything.

Try taking your OWN ADVICE you fahgut POS!!! You are pathetic...you should be suspended from YOUR fking job...

Both YOU and your dumbshyt brother Omar...

Douche bags

One would think that Ireland is in trouble for telling Martin's agent to have his client punch Incognito but Ross seems to operate with blinders on regarding his GM Ireland.

Armando's other article with King Don I can't comment in because I don't have F*c*book but the embarrassments listed are just a FEW, never forget the Johnson, Saban & FATuna "QUITTINGS". Grown men tuckin' tail with their failures - those were as humiliating to us fans as ANYTHING else that has happened.
This episode just shows how absolutely media driven the world is today & its just sad. The story has flip-flopped 3x already & likely will more. Philbin (not much more than Sporano without the energy) prematurely reacted to a situation he had no pulse on to begin with because he was worried how the media would portray him/the organization -at 1st light- because OMG, the 'N' word was out there. This whole situation is a great example of how incredibly shallow society has become & how over the top people react to things they have no idea about.
Blow this thing up again & bring in Marty Schottenheimer.
If they sign Chuckie Gruden that will be the last straw - I'm already having a hard time trying to remain a fan of this mess.

The next question is....Is Martin Lawyered up?

Because it sure looks like he is going lawsuit here.

This whole thing is a joke. My best friend is black but I don't use that word because he finds it offensive. Yet guys at my work call me, "Hey my 'N'" all the time. I still use the old school "Man, or Dude, or Dousche, or or Bud" or whatever but in the environment they are in, in the context it is used the 'N' word is simply replacing 'brother' or the terms I stated above. Its a lightening rod due to the desensitizing nature of today's media. It makes me uncomfortable to hear it usually but not at work when a black guy says it to me - it means he likes me to whatever extent. This is blown WAAAAY outta proportion. Incognito has a reputation - he has also been a pretty straight good soldier since joining the Dolphins (maybe he's grown up a bit?). He's still a ball buster & a little bit not right but he hasn't hurt the team like he used to do. By all rights he has become a leader. Johnathon Martin is simply not meant for the NFL lockeroom, doesn't make him a bad guy. Rattin' out his teammate & trying to play the poor me card does. He likely does have emotional issues as Oscar states & he needs help - that shouldn't be joked about. He just went about things incorrectly & its going to cost HIS FRIEND Incognito his job - thats unfortunate.

The initial narrative built around this incident seems to have been askew. Incognito still comes off as your prototypical dumb jock that gets a pass because he's one of the boys, however I am starting to believe that Martin wasn't bullied into breaking down and leaving solely due to Incognito's antics.

It's becoming clearer that Martin has mental/emotional issues unrelated to this mess. Possibly he and/or his family is using this as an excuse because there is a stigma attached to pro athletes who admit this type of problem.

Jeff Ireland may have made a huge mistake by flippantly advising that Martin settle his differences with Incognito with fists. While this may be a time-tested remedy in dealing with bullies, it is definitely not a smart thing to say as team GM.

Ireland's removal as GM would bring up the possibility of removal/replacement of J Philbin as HC. So far I'm not in favor of retaining Philbin but I can't help thinking he is caught in that same warp zone Bill Parcell's found himself in as a 1st time HC.

Parcells, when asked about his irascible persona, recalls that he was doing things in order to please everybody- owner, GM, players, coaches- and failing on game day. When the owner put him on notice to win or go, he decided to do things his way. It resulted in his gruff demeanor but his first Superbowl, also.
