Dolphins leadership? What Dolphins leadership?

The Dolphins are failing on so many levels these days I am having a hard time keeping up.

One issue that seems apparent to current and former players is the Dolphins' obvious lack of leadership.

You remember the leadership issue? It was one of the fundamental questions the Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin relationship brought to light. I told you we'd discuss the questions one at a time in this space.

My column in today's Miami Herald shows why the Dolphins simply don't have a clue about leadership and that's not me talking. That's players from the past saying it, echoing it from mountain tops.

Consider:

“I understand when it comes to the natural football things that take place in a locker room that happens with younger guys or older guys, veterans versus rookies – all of those things, they happen," former defensive lineman Willie McGinist said on NFL Network Tuesday. "But there is a certain point when you cross the line and there was a failure of leadership in that locker room that let this situation get out of hand."

Exactly.

The leadership void is deeper than that. It extends to the coaching ranks, particularly if a Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel report that coaches ordered Incognito to "toughen up" Martin is true. Are you kidding me?

If this report is true, not only is the coaching staff that is supposed to provide direction for the players utterly misguided in the definition of giving good direction, but it has other more potentially significant meanings.

If true -- and the Dolphins refuse to confirm or deny the report as they hide behind an NFL mandated gag order -- the fact a coaching staff would order what is basically a Code Red on a player and use a player who was admittedly mentally unstable in the past to do it shows that staff is not just an accessory to this wrong but is actually complicit in the sin.

And as the offender has been suspended and will be fired by not playing for the Dolphins again, so too the accomplice should be fired and not represent the Dolphins again.

If Incognito has evidence this order was given or if multiple Dolphins player tell the NFL this order was given, Incognito may still not play in Miami but at least he will have a plausible explanation for taking the action he did. He was simply following orders. Obviously, going off on a racially tinged attack is an offensive and ridiculous escalation of the orders, but it did comply with the orders. And so Incognito will live to play another day somewhere in the NFL.

With respect to the Sun-Sentinel's reporting, I hope the information is not true.

If it is ... The nuclear winter is coming.

Joe Philbin has personally suspended/cut 3 of the best leaders we had> Jake Long, Reggie Bush, and now Richie. They said it best over at www.DolphinsTruth.com

Will this team ever be relevant again when it comes to making the playoffs year after year and challenging for the Super Bowl. Correct me if I'm wrong but the circus side show has been going on since jimmy left after the 99 season. It started with the stache and moved onto Sabin and Cameron and then sparano. We have seen Ricky prosper when he arrived in Miami only to be run outta there by wannstache. Saban not going with Brees and instead going to culpepper, Cameron drafting the ginn family and now philbin losing his locker room with ideas of code reds from coaches to the players. Said it before and will say it again. You don't see this behaviour in locker rooms like the pats, or steelers or packers. Those teams win titles while all we do is make headlines for off field shenanigans and bafoonery

Too bad the Bills stole Cordy Glenn from right under our noses last year. If he lasted two more picks, all of this may have been avoided.

Anyway, the moral in this whole story is ...

Mark in Toronto was right!!!

If the coaching staff was involved in the bullying it's no wonder why Martin left the team...

Whatever the case the offensive line has been terrible over the past few years... really has been the only weak point on the Dolphins team this year.

I say fire the offensive line coach first, he should have known what was going on since he works directly with the players day in and day out.

The Saga continues!

Steve, I think your view on bringing in McKinney is right on. A guy already dealing with teammates not believing in him and trying to toughen him up again after being demoted to RT. That had to trigger Incognito to push harder and harder (no excuse for his actions just a reality) Martins already fragile ego and added pressure from teammates could not have been very healthy for his mental state. Why would he trust a coaching staff that should have known this already and dealt with it accordingly. I've defended the coaching staff hoping that they could pull the team from the cellar, but they obviously had no hold on their own locker room much less the individual players. I don't let Incognito off the hook, but he shouldn't be the only villain. The entire front office down to the towel boy should be fired and Ross should start from scratch. His biggest mistake was not firing all of Parcels people when he quit on the team and took his full pay with him. This is Parcels real legacy to this franchise.

Cut Incongnito(although I wish they could keep him)........... Suspend Philbin Two games.
Bring Martin back put him on the game film one on one for one quarter to continue to be the joke of a draft pick that he is, then trade him for a long snapper next year to the Raiders.

FIRE JEFF IRELAND for bringing all the bull crap personnel and all the bad things that have happened since he and Parcells came.
END OF HEADLINE in two weeks DONE and DONE

Dolphins should just trade away their 2nd pick every draft as Ireland & the fins sure do know how to pick winners:
2008
Phillip Merling - Gone - bust
Chad Henne - Gone
2009
Pat White - Major Bust
Sean Smith - Good Player not resigned - Gone
2010
Koa Misi - Starter - Still on team
2011
Daniel Thomas - Part time player - verge of being a bust
2012
Jonathan Martin - AWOL - Major Bust
2013
Jamar Taylor - Has one tackle in three games & inactive most of the time - WTF was Ireland thinking?

So there you have it out of the 6 drafts we have 1 player that was taken in the 2nd starting and only 3 on team (I have Martin as off for now)

They just simply tried to toughen up the wrong guy in the wrong way and used the wrong guy to do it. Martin is an educated person from Stanford, he doesn't need football, and that is most likely what pouncey heard was a frustrated remark about leaving football. Don't be surprised if Martin's parents played a huge role in wanting him to do something else and were pressuring him from the other side. There he is stuck in the middle of family and his football family trying to get the best out of him, and he just finally snapped when they replaced him at LT with McKinnie. I'm sure some things could have been said to him then like, " just couldn't hold down the LT you loser" { not my words or anothers just speculation} At that point he thinks his parents are right, I can see the confusion that could be caused. Until all the FACTS come out we must just "speculate"

Mando, I think u went way too far implicating the coaches for wanting to toughen up Martin. We don't know what exactly was said. You can go to almost any high school, college, or pro team and find a situation where coaches ask proven players to try to help get more production out of an unproven player. This is not a crime. They had to ask a player to do it because these workouts are not mandatory and coaches themselves cannot reprimand a player for not being there. Other teams would probably handle it very similarly. Based on his poor use of words, Cogs was probably not the best man for that job however.

This Leadership Council that Philbin set up is starting to resemble a terrorist organization.

Mando, dig deeper. Philbin put together a group of guys whose sole purpose is to terrorize other players.

The black players supporting a white player using the N word is one level of ignorance.....but the COACH and GM who ALLOWED THIS is the IGNORANCE THAT WE AS FANS NEED TO BE FOCUSED ON.
That is the LEVEL THAT HAS RUINED this team for the past 15 years.....
IRELAND SHOULD HAVE BEEN GONE 3 YEARS AGO along with these incompetent coaches he has been hiring.

Much to do about nothing. Cam Wake said it best, "does anyone care about Tampa?" this is Political correct nonsense. I don't agree with the "N" word being used, but that doesn't even seem to be an issue here. Poor little Johnny was being picked on.. Boo Hoo. There are players in the NFL that have DUI manslaughter, and dog killing on their record. They need to cut Richie just a little slack here.

Leadership? Does that word even go with this team?

This is the type of Nuclear detonation we need for the Dolphins, I hope that the shock wave from ground zero takes, Jeff Ireland, Joe Philbin and his entire staff of bafoons with it.

This all makes me long for the days of Sparano and Wanny.

I hope we get a great coach like Brian Billick or John Gruden and a real OC for Tannehill that dumps the zone blocking and the horrible WC Offense for a more pro style offensive attack.

The entire Dolphins organization appears to be filled with incompetents and louts.
Ross needs to clean out all the idiots and miscreants in the front office, coaching staff, and the locker room. Or, better, Ross should sell the Dolphins and let someone else rebuild this sorry organization.
