Dolphins talk stirring overtime victory

It was early Friday morning when the Dolphins got to their locker room and were able to start discussing their stirring 22-20 overtime victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

It was early Friday morning when I filed this column that explains how the Dolphins saved their seasonn (for now) and helped keep multiple people I name from very uncomfortable questions and futures. (Please check out the column).

Back in the locker room, meanwhile, this is some of things the Dolphins were saying:

On Jonathan Martin, the starting right tackle who has been given a leave of absence from the team so he can seek treatment for emotional issues:

Joe Philbin: “I’d like to say, in regard to Jonathan, that any play with an injury or illness, our primary concern is for the health of the individual. And with respect to Jonathan, he’s been excused with a non-football illness. Our concern and support are with him, and really that’s all I’m going to say on the matter."

On Tyson Clabo, who returned to the starting lineup and replaced Martin seamlessly. He did not allow a sack:

Calbo: "I just want to do the job that I was brought here to do. I want to play at the level I’m still capable to playing at. You have to take your lumps and licks in life. When I got benched last week, I just said to myself if I got the chance to go back in there, I’m going to be ready."

On what a win does for the team's morale after suffering four consecutive defeats:

Ryan Tannehill: "It’s huge. We had our backs up against the wall for a couple weeks in a row, and we kept getting pushed further back and finally we got out of that whole a little bit.  This is a huge win for us.  Losing four straight, coming back and getting a team win.  The defense played great, made some huge plays, getting turnovers.  The offense didn’t score a lot of points, but we moved the ball when we had to there at the end of regulation, to get a field goal.  We kind of righted the ship, we’re back on track a little bit, it gives us a fresh start midway through the season.  We’re four and four, obviously it’s not where we wanted to be at, but that’s where we’re at.  Now we’ll have to build on this from here."

Mike Wallace:  "I think tonight was our first true, team win. I think everyone played great in all three phases of the game. We made some critical plays in all three phases, and it was just a big win for our team."

Phillip Wheeler: “It does a lot for us, not only record wise but our confidence, getting that losing streak off of us and I feel like we can start fresh at .500 and get some wins."

HUGE. RT's new nickname.
He needs a cliche coach.
Great win Fins.
Come on Philbin. Call a TO in 3rd qtr. give the D a break. We were on the field the whole quarter.

Early Tuesday?? Today is Friday

Glad we got the win of course, ut man that was some piss-poor tackling. Thank God Wake is back.

A big play last night that gets overlooked is Jimmy Wilson getting down to field that punt in OT.

Lil things win games!

Darn, i thought it was TGIF, now i'm a sad man !

Painful watching soliai not run after Bernard on that run. At least well only have to see it 1000 times in the next ten years...
At least he didn't miss "twice" too

..Dashi..I have been an Incognito apologist all year. But you are right about him being gone next year. I think he sealed his fate by his comments about the playcalling. He was right by what he said..But you cannot publicly call out your coaches. That is a no no. and will probably cost him his job.

I see everyone here as a fan. We'll rarely always agree, but, we're all still fans of the same team none-the-less.

EVERYONE is tired of the losing. It's just that we have differing opinions as to who or what is most responsible for the losing. Still, it makes none of us in here any less fan than the other.

Calling others non-fans because they don't quite see eye-to-eye with us. It's like pissing in the wind and calling it rain. Can we all just get a grip?

Armando I think you meant to type "EARLY FRIDAY MORNING".

TODAY is not TUESDAY.

Perhaps you will even get the kudos you so desperately seem to need ...
Posted by: Kris | November 01, 2013 at 10:34 AM

Need? No, but for the crap I put up with I'd say deserve more than need

Dolphan Rick, I'm afraid to predict a win for Bucs to jinx it, but I'd say Glennon is going to have a wonderful Sunday against our defense that will either get him demoted or rattled enough to the point that Vincent Jackson won't get more than 2 catches.

DD, I refuse to come on the blog during game day. Like Craig there are just way too many idiots on here while the game is on

Stupid homers, the traveling team on a short week always loses eh?

Halloween effects on Armando??

Armando, no offense, but this entire article is written like you put on one hell of drunk last night. Not only is "TUESDAY" wrong, there are typos all over the place.

Need? No, but for the hate I put up with I'd say deserve more than need. Maybe now you'll talk football since you've yet to address any of my football posts yet insist my opinions are wrong (you're allowed to disagree but maybe you should look into my perspective a bit more than stubbornly thinking I'm a radical nusence)

The Charger game coming is huge for playoff implications.

I am extremely proud of this Team. No matter their Destiny, this is my kind of Team.

Huge game! But there should be no excuse for us to not win that game (unless Pouncey is jailed by that time. Unlikely but if it happens that changes everything)

Great team win...wtf with Sturgis missing all those fg in last few games?

Calbo? Who's he?

I'm loving the cb combo of Patterson and Grimes. AJ Green was just a little to big for Grimes. Grimes matched up better with Green on passes near the middle of the field. Green did most of his damage on the sideline areas.

Still, on the sidelines, Grimes did vindicate himself some what by stepping in front of Dalton sideline pas and taking it 92yds for the td.

I will feel a lot better when we can pull off a screen play. What's the deal? Miller or thigpen please bust one. Who's fault? Rb? Tannehill? O line?

this win doesn't exclude the fact that Sherman and sturgis are on the hot seat that just got hotter. Coyle bailed Sherman out. how the hell are you this awful at 3 & 1 in which each time we're in that situation it's an automatic 4th down. Not to mention out defense is great on anything 3rd and 5yrds or less but horrendous on anything longer

I still think this defense is a great playmaking safety away to being elite.

Jones has regressed and Clemons is plain average in the passing game.

Play calling. Miller is a stud in these situations. Similar to Bernard.....if only we would use him like Bernard

There are still big problems to fix before we play Tampa. We need to get some type of fluidity to the offense. I now see the light (thanks to DD) we are not able with this team to implement a true pass-first offense. We need to go back to Sparano ball (run first, limit mistakes, accept FGs). Defense needs to tighten up. They CANNOT keep extending drives. They're on the field all the time mostly because they can't stop anyone on 3rd down. Lastly, KEEP FEEDING WALLACE! He NEEDS to be a part of the offense. That opens things up for Hartline, the TEs and RBs. He may be Edward Scissorhands, but he's necessary to throw a wrinkle to the defense so they don't put 11 in the box.

Today is Friday. It was Thursday night not Monday night football mando.

Krillian,

I appreciate the comments on the last blog. I too was proud of the team last night. They and Tannehill really showed me something last night. Good job!

By the way, good job by Clabo last night. Hope it continues.

Who says all the play calling issues are on Sherman!?
Couldn't it be that tannehill keeps checking to different plays?

Posted by: Sam I Am | November 01, 2013 at 10:57 AM

Only beef I have with Coyle is he doesn't let Jones freeroam. We have a better defense than last year so why is it necessary to have him cover TE or RB? Notice how TE still torch us so that revised plan isn't working

DD,

Yeah the coaches probably don't like to be called out. But Incognito is gone for more than that. Incognito has hit that wall all veteran players do when they get old. He was slow to begin with now he is just retarded.

Incognito was good. But for the last 2 Seasons I have seen a steady decline in his play. And it doesn't help that the only time Incognito looked good was when Jake was in his Prime. So I suspect he wasn't that good to start with. Jake in his prime could block for him and Incognito.

But to your point, Philbin doesn't like guys who constantly complain to the media. He prefers them to do what Wallace did after Game 1. Speak in private with the coach about the difference of opinion.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wallace still has Stone hands. And is scared to fight for the ball when it is in the Air. But he is doing his Job. And he goes to the coaches to complain not the media.

Agree with Sam. Mando posted this drunk.

I really don't see a playoff team here. The offense can implode any given drive, and endures long scoring droughts.

The defense is a playmaking safety away, which is why I think we'll have 3rd and long issues the rest of the year. I see a 8-8 team at best.

Posted by: dj baracus | November 01, 2013 at 10:59 AM

Could be, but is obvious that WR (Wallace) screens net nothing more than 10yrds on a good play and about 5 on average or even less. Why not throw the screen to miller.

Actually, i take that back. It's not in Sherman, it's cause our OL isn't good/athletic enough to pull out on time. Think Jerry, Clabo, or McKinnie can roll out like that? This is where Pouncey and Martin are good.

Gotta beat the bucs

mando, considering the way this tam pulled together yesterday, and showed a lot of heart and passion, and drive... how do you feel about writing that blog entry yesterday?

I thought you were reaching a bit by putting all these things together...

Obviously we can see by the effort that the team is not falling apart at the seams.

Wheel route or swing pass to miller would be amazing. The guy is exciting.
Was it atl game where we missed one of those at end of game? Keep trying until it works.

Daryl

Your boy jimmy Wilson almost cost us the game. He gives up so many 3rd down completions and he was lucky they didn't call helmet to helmet on the Ellerbe interception. I would really love to see this team improve on 3rd and long defensively.

Hey assshole.
What about all that trash talking earlier in the week?

Good game and even better win. Now on to the Next game. Time to get back above .500

On another note. Who here still wants a Midget WR or an Average TE with the First Round Pick. T.Austin is who Dashi thought he was. A Shorter Version of P.Warrick. And None of these TEs in the Draft are Superstars. D.Sims can be just as good as any of the TEs drafted early this season. Give Me Clay and Egnew any day. They have more versatility.

Man it feels good to see the Light turn on Egnew. He has answered the Challenge given to him by Sherman.

Incognito Sucks!! Not just as a person but as a Player. Right Now he is the weakest Link on the O-Line. Jerry has played himself back into shape and seems to be getting better week to week. Even Clabo has shown Improvement.

I know Garner is not the Answer but I rather give him a shot than Incognito. The Guy is as dumb as a Bag of Rocks. Constantly missing Assignments. Ever notice that on 3rd and Short the pressure always comes thru from his guy. Never mind the guy can't pull to save his life and never reaches the second level to set a block.

What does Incognito do well? Play Nasty. That isn't Blocking which is what he gets paid to do.

He probably blamed J.Martin every time he missed a block. Can't do that with McKinnie. No Punk in Big Mac. Big Mac will finish slapping the little neck he has off.

Dashi Theory

I am getting tired most the time I post for the first time a new blog magically pops up in like 15 Minutes. Like someone is trying to cover up what Dashi has to say.

No Worries. Cut and Paste my post on the New Blog. My Opinion will be heard.

DAM! mando drank so much in the pressbox that he thought he slept for four days ... way to tie one on Mando!!

Good thing the refs were on our side last night. That call that took a TD away from Cincy and ended up in a Pick 6 for us was absolutely huge. 14 point swing. Also, Brian Hartline didn't get his left foot down on that big pass play that set up the FG to get us into OT. I guess we can thank the refs for this win.
Very sloppy game that we were very fortunate to win.

Whoever joined me and my buds AT JOE ROBBIE last night kudos to every last one of you. It was noisy and really loud, big kudos to the REAL fans that actually go and support and make their presence known and never gave up. 12th man was alive and well last night.

You guys are just always so quick to jump the gun. He only said and did what everyone was saying and thinking. Does he get resigned at his salary probably not but he's not all of a sudden old either or in decline either. I know he sucks too. LOL

Anyone sick of the Bernard run hype. Wtf. Fins D was literally on e field for 17 minutes straight (thanks to 2 bs PI penalties. 1called 1 not).
They were beat down. Tired. Especially after they all ran td back w grimes.
Good run but against a tired D.
O well.

Hey ashole.
What about all that trash talking earlier in the week?
Posted by: Clay Moore | November 01, 2013 at 11:04 AM

All my BLAME SHERMAN posts? Lol glad you can sense sarcasm and the mockery that I was giving to ever media-based opinion that tools develop. You know the ones that can't think for themselves. Please see my name for further vindication.

By the way, anyone who says Tannehill is not learning and doesn't show prescence, what about that audible out of the run play when he saw the safety cheat down on the run in overtime? Safety comes down, Tannehill goes over the top, Newman is reaching for teh oxygen and out of desperation tackles Wallace (actually a good play because we were going to see an 80 yard or whatever td)... THAT WAS TEXTBOOK!

Hey assshole.
What about all that trash talking earlier in the week?

HaHaHa hahahahah bandwagon jumpers all of em. They go away come back go away come back just like my ex.

Lamar Miller ranks fifth in yds per carry. Keep running the ball, and this team has a chance!

Posted by: Mark in Toronto | November 01, 2013 at 11:10 AM

Great post! But people don't see that, they only see his misplays

For the second week in a row, I didnt check in on the live blog last night, during the game.....just hasnt been fun/enjoyable to watch the game while on the blog, couldnt take the (nearly) constant criticism and overreactions, the moronic/dumb comments, etc--most of the folks that are participating seem to be in the hysterical/negative/clueless camp......same dumb themes, makes the game hard to enjoy, bottom line--you all should try it.....just sayin

Mark, Tannehill did a good job at "managing" the game for the Dolphins. More than anything the run open up the passing game. If Shernan continues to run the ball the Dolphins will be successful but we all know his play callings is iffy at best.

sorry not sure what anyone is talking about but I was hinting (and then predicted) a dolphins win all week. I asked everyone why they were so confident cincinnati would win and no one had an answer which is good because clearly, I'm retrospect, there was no answer

Posted by: benz | November 01, 2013 at 11:12 AM

No poster here with a legitimate football mind comes to the blog during game time. That's when the trolls to come out

this is what we are, but this is what most teams in the league are.....pretty goo, plenty of talent but not enough to overpower....CLOSE games, nearly every week--we've only been whooped by NO, and look at our schedule so far--tough....we've lost a couple of tight, hard fought games, wasnt for lack of effort--same situation that most teams are in....we gotta learn to close and make clutch plays, definitely, and they're not great....but the Fins are pretty good.

Mark, sucks with the pass interference that would have been a 90yd Tannehill to Wallace td.

It was the first long pass that actually looked like it was going to hit Wallace in stride and not underthrown. It was the first time a Tannehill to Wallace pass looked perfect.

It would have been the game winner and OT would not have been needed.

Mark, you don't know that. And maybe the JMart issue was the icing on the cake to wake these fools up. But OBVIOUSLY something is wrong when the guy ups and leaves the team. OBVIOUSLY something is wrong when a player flips off the coaching staff on the field. I'm not saying it's not fixable, or the team can't win another game even if they are in disarray, but we need to stop blaming Mando when he writes of dysfunction within the organization. Last I heard, you were in Toronto, not Davie, so who would know more, you from 10,000 ft., or Mando who's on the ground talking to people all day everyday? Mando's been critical of the team since I've been on this site. Is he wrong? Have we consistently made the Playoffs? Or are we consistently mediocre? I think he may have good reason to be skeptical.

I live in DC. I hear how the media second-guesses the team all the time up here. It's just a fact, home-town sports reporters are not fans (solely), not cheerleaders, they are there to tell you what's REALLY going on and how things they see during the week may be affecting what you see on game day.

If anyone wants to look at that win last night as think all is well and good then I suggest you also enjoy that happy ending from Eva Mendes, cause you're dreaming (or see a ophthalmologist, cause there's a problem with your vision).

Armando,

Calbo?

Get a good word processing package. Add all of the player names to the program's dictionary. That way you will not misspell them.

You're a professional now. Act like one.

We got a big win on National TV when everyone picked against this team and a lot of you are still complaining. Armondo couldn't spell to save his life, and his grammar is pathetic.

Great question from a NY Phin fan on Sirius last night to the so-called experts. "Why is it the Dolphins are still in so many games even the losses but the media only takes shots at them." The response, "by that thought the Cowboys are great because they are in most games." Way to miss the point the Cowboys are talked about to the point of exhaustion while the Dolphins are always over looked. Why? Because the local media and fan base are absolutely pathetic. How can the national media respect a team when their local fans and media go out of their way to talk sh*t every chance they get! They WON and so many of you are still talking sh*t. To the TRUE fans on here THANK YOU! the rest of you need to F*ck off!!!!!

dj baracus,

The Gio run was amazing but I agree with you that Miami was gassed. The interception in a weird way gave the Bengals the momentum. The D gave up everything that next drive and then when Miami went 3 and out they basically did it again, followed by a very crazy run but like you said the D was gassed beyond gassed at that point.

Don't get me wrong I'd take a pick 6 for 90 plus any day of the week but that was a weird turning point for the D. Weird game all around but we got the W and now onto a very beatable Tampa team who has given up on their coach. I don't see that changing vs Miami.

Other than the BOMB the Bengals thwarted with a smart PI play...did Wallace look slow out there to anyone else...especially on that screen...how in the F did a dude with a 96 on his jersey takle Wallace from behind...he actually got caught from behind twice by my count...where was the acceleration???
