Dolphins talk stirring overtime victory

It was early Friday morning when the Dolphins got to their locker room and were able to start discussing their stirring 22-20 overtime victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

It was early Friday morning when I filed this column that explains how the Dolphins saved their seasonn (for now) and helped keep multiple people I name from very uncomfortable questions and futures. (Please check out the column).

Back in the locker room, meanwhile, this is some of things the Dolphins were saying:

On Jonathan Martin, the starting right tackle who has been given a leave of absence from the team so he can seek treatment for emotional issues:

Joe Philbin: “I’d like to say, in regard to Jonathan, that any play with an injury or illness, our primary concern is for the health of the individual. And with respect to Jonathan, he’s been excused with a non-football illness. Our concern and support are with him, and really that’s all I’m going to say on the matter."

On Tyson Clabo, who returned to the starting lineup and replaced Martin seamlessly. He did not allow a sack:

Calbo: "I just want to do the job that I was brought here to do. I want to play at the level I’m still capable to playing at. You have to take your lumps and licks in life. When I got benched last week, I just said to myself if I got the chance to go back in there, I’m going to be ready."

On what a win does for the team's morale after suffering four consecutive defeats:

Ryan Tannehill: "It’s huge. We had our backs up against the wall for a couple weeks in a row, and we kept getting pushed further back and finally we got out of that whole a little bit.  This is a huge win for us.  Losing four straight, coming back and getting a team win.  The defense played great, made some huge plays, getting turnovers.  The offense didn’t score a lot of points, but we moved the ball when we had to there at the end of regulation, to get a field goal.  We kind of righted the ship, we’re back on track a little bit, it gives us a fresh start midway through the season.  We’re four and four, obviously it’s not where we wanted to be at, but that’s where we’re at.  Now we’ll have to build on this from here."

Mike Wallace:  "I think tonight was our first true, team win. I think everyone played great in all three phases of the game. We made some critical plays in all three phases, and it was just a big win for our team."

Phillip Wheeler: “It does a lot for us, not only record wise but our confidence, getting that losing streak off of us and I feel like we can start fresh at .500 and get some wins."

Thank you for proving my point assshole.
For you - It's all about you and not the Dolphins.

matt moore is a loser. he has been his entire career. he has never beaten a team with a winning record. with this play calling he would be getting crushed in a collapsing pocket just like tannehill. difference is he would have tried to throw the ball more while getting sacked and those passes would be picked off. he has maybe half the arm strength of tannehill. so all those out patterns to hardline and clay would also have been jumped and run back for TD's he is where he needs to be. on the bench. i'd trust a healthy devlin to win more games over matt moore!!!

Dashi @ 11:47, I've been on this train for a while too. The defense has to be the better unit and until last night they were not.

Yesterday was the blueprint ... we can win games passing the ball too but it also exposes us at times...

Exposed.

Now expect the breakdown that comes with it.

Sorry if I don't want to play your silly game for the 1001 time.

Thanks for showing your true colors you Flamer.

Look at the posts I've made in the first two pages in this blog but clearly it's not about dolphins lol. Why don't you engage me in football talk instead of hating? Then ill talk dolphins instead of talking about myself

Kris, I thought I was Dashi. Now I'm not Dashi?

Role reversal? Yeah I cursed you out for being a self-centered, conceited prick that everyone here agrees with. I've talked football all day until these haters came. But no one notices my football posts because they have their own agenda. Take the blinders off for the sake of your own life and those around you

Ross, stop ripping off the Fin fans with your crap product!

I mock all you trolltards for exclaiming Miami has no chance. I ask you to prove it and you can't. Then I predict dolphins will win since it takes bigger balls to predict a win on this blog then it is to hate on your team. Sure enough my thought process was right (though none of you would realize cause you refuse to do anything but hate on the man that's right - because he did it at the expense of you dumb, low-class citizens (hate on me for calling you that but after you hit "post" look in the mirror)

Hard to see what this team will do this year. They look poised for a .500 season because the weakness on the OL will not go away which in the best case scenario, makes them one and done in any remote playoff possibility.
One thing's for certain though, Cameron Wake is on helluva football player. He looks close to 100% from his MCL sprain and he gets blatantly held most of the time rarely getting a call from the zebras yet you don't hear him complain or anything, he just excells.
Awesome player who deserves better.

I remember a blog post from DC a month or so ago about the bend but don't break tendency of the defense. I thought it was okay, as long as the Dolphins won...the "issues" would take care of themselves in the end...I've changed my mind. The entire defense needs to run through the tackle, instead of holding on and being dragged another 3 or 4 yards. The CB's need to stop playing off so far in long 3rd down situations.

Is it an issue of talent or coaching. All the bending does not seem to help in the long run. It seems to extend plays and time for the defense to be on the field...which in turn makes them tired out at the end of the game, when the games on the line.

That really needs to be looked at!

Lol @ 2:12....you say that as if something is to be gained on a blog by typing curse words....

You are more pathetic than I ever imagined....did you beat your chest to.....

Everybody is a tough guy with the keyboard in their hand....and everybody has a crystal ball into the next guys life...BALLS ACCURATE TOO....

You sound like a mental patient.....@ worst....

@ best.....do do not sound like somebody I would engage in serious conversation.....

football talk....or otherwise....

Clearly, winning is not a requirement for a Stephen Ross GM.

Kris, I've made 3 football posts directly related to something you've said or directed as a question to you but you didn't answer/address one of them. Then, when someone spews hate you respond but don't include any football talk THEN accuse me of not talking football

Kris just come back when Miami loses again so you can put the brunt of the blame on Tannehill. That's your only purpose here.

Until then, you're presence is not required or welcome.

This is the game she always plays.

I have left responses stating that I believed the defense has been the primary problem all along. While the offense was playing poorly in the second half (pick who you wish to blame), the defense was letting teams score at will.

I write this only so I can say I told you so. Great win because of good defensive effort. (tackling still could use work)

Lol the sad/funny part is none of you realize this entire front I'm putting on is to mock the ignorance you tools possess. I've been sarcastic and have mocked every person that has been offended (like I said, no direct accusations, but if you think I'm directing it at you then you're probably right - if the shoe fits) and yet you all think im somehow crazy enough to be this radical unorthodox person that doesn't see the light. Oh jolly.

Ill come back next week with a different persona and own you all equally. Then we can play the "I know who you really are" game with me again

By the way you haven't won yet.

I love how the trolls (you tools) all hate on the new troll (me) because I'm not the kind of troll you like (the Miami blows troll) so you all line up against me and fire away. Except you're shooting blanks

Look 12:18....

You don't conduct yourself like a 13year old adolescent(admitting....joyfully.....that you cussed me out on a football blog)....and then think I am going to carry on any real or serious conversation with you...lol....you are further gone than I thought....

And why do you want my attention so bad....

Are you obsessed......

What am I wearing right now?

In short (since my other post is too much for some): I am acting like one of you tools. You then hate on me for being a tool. Which, in turns, means you're hating on yourself

In short: my mission is accomplished :)

Lol @ 12:23....

Most mental patients have delusions of grandeur.....

Believing it is there purpose in life to show others "the way"....

Your post screams of a person who needs help.....my only question is.....

Armando....how did you attract so many looney tunes to one site....

Someone needs to Get a Life!! lol

All I ask for the offense at this point in time is to run a freaking QB sneak: Critical drive to close the first half in NO and last night in the 4th Qtr. You face a 3 and inches and have a big atletic QB in THill, run the damn play Sherman! Look at Brady and how masterful he is in that play and the guy is skinnier than his lady Gisselle.

Kris, I always though you to be a step above the trolltards. I've learned something this week.

And now you're no longer the best detective in the world but you're the best psychiatrist in the world! When will your magnificence end!

I'm also the best lawyer in the world....

And I rest my case with your asinine post @ 12:25.....

Good day....

..Slam @ 11:04...WTF those are fighting words!!!! LOL

My daily Jimmy Wilson defense post..

He hardly almost cost this team the game..He only gave up 1 third down completion that resulted in a first down. He did get a bit lucky on the Sanu drop. But the play where he blew Sanu up and forced the int was a clean play..A good play. He also forced Dalton into an Odrick sack on a corner blitz..

Look..This whole defense of Jimmy Wilson started when posters started making claims that Jamar Taylor, or Will Davis would be better nickel options. I'm saying no way. Wilson isn't perfect. But is a better option theneither of the 2 rookies. It is my opinion, and I stand by it.

All I ask for is a new GM. I would like a new HC, QB, and owner but I'd settle for a real GM.

This is one pathetic offense....Joe Philbin.

Posted by: ajdczar | November 01, 2013 at 12:23 PM

I'm not saying the defense is the primary problem...I'm just saying that the defense/entire team would help themselves out big-time, if they would not "bend" so much between the 20's. This entire team is playing well given everything that is coming to light over the past week. They have 11 days to work on it before the next time it counts.

I'm also now convinced that the Dolphins should NEVER go up 17-3 again this year...it's bad karma!

As to the defense being on the field too long and Grimes pic 6 backfiring? Its a TD man. Sure the offense didn't help with the 3 and outs. But damn this D needs to STOP teams on 3rd a 8+ every game. Not a coach but seems to me D. Jordan should be on the field every down. He's fast long armed and a game chnger? Kinda reminds me of J. Kearse? Pretty sure he would have chased that RB down on that long crazu TD run?
Go Phins!

T-Puke leads the league in 3 n outs putting tremendous pressure on our great D.

If you have to explain yourself or your humor, you are not Funny.

Simple, Stupid.

Now to get this blog back on track and talking Football for those that come here to discuss the finer things of the game.

Agreed. As long as we were winning I was OK with the Defense. Not Happy but OK.

I know Sherman is an easy target because everyone thinks they know Offense better than the Next Guy. But maybe Sherman decided he has to keep throwing in the Second half because the defense keeps giving up the Lead.

What really ticks me off is how bad they play on 3rd down. And it isn't the players. They just call the wrong defense on 3rd Down. And from the looks of it Ellerbe isn't allowed to audible out of it.

I know Dansby Sucked. Cause he did. But I'm starting to realize now that maybe Dansby wasn't at fault for not audibling off a bad play. Maybe he just wasn't allowed. Still doesn't give Dansby an excuse for not covering well. Just for the whole defense not being lined up properly.

And Wheeler. Where do I start. Wheeler makes Misi look like a Pro bowler. D.Jordan should be playing LB and rotating DE with O.Vernon on passing downs. Both OV and DJ can play LB better than Wheeler. And if you stand both of them up on one side Offenses will get confused on who is rushing and who is dropping into coverage.

I enjoy reading the posts of Florida #1 Education. I get the name, not living in FL myself( upstate NY). Oh, wait...I mean Dashi. But as Dashi said, everyone knows only Dashi is Dashi. Maybe we're all Daytona, or YG, or Love Faking, etc. Now I'm confused, and it seems I'm not the only one. Who am I again?

In short (since my other post is too much for some): I am acting like one of you tools. You then hate on me for being a tool. Which, in turns, means you're hating on yourself
In short: my mission is accomplished :)

hahaha, what is he really trying to prove?

WILDCARD HUNT: Chargers, Jets, Dolphins, Titans, Ravens

1.Chargers 4-3 - Remaining opponents win percentage .660. They still have to play KC and Denver both twice, @ Miami and vs Cincy. Prediction: 9-7

2.Jets 4-4 - Remaining opponents win percentage .500. They play Saints, Miami twice, @ Baltimore and @ Carolina which on paper seems to be games they will be underdogs. Prediction: 7-9

3.Dolphins 4-4 - Remaining opponents win percentage .450. All 3 teams that have winning records left on the schedule Miami plays in Miami. Miami gets Jets twice and tough late road games @Pitt and @Buff.
Prediction: 9-7

4.Titans 3-4 - Remaining opponents win percentage is lowest .420 of all playoff contenders. They play 5 divisional games and 2 vs Indy but also get 2 vs Jax. Prediction: 7-9

5.Ravens 3-4 - Remaining opponents .500 win percentage. Tough schedule @Cincy, @Detroit and home vs Pats and Cincy. Prediction 8-8

Only Sirk The Diety is right and he's from Florida!

93 Defensive plays, did T3+out even play eh?

Jordan replacing Wheeler at OLB, the first guy to say that here must be some kind of genius??

(haha, patting back barry horowitz style)

DD,

J.Wilson and N.Carroll have gotten better. But to some they still see Rookie J.Wilson and Rookie N.Carroll.

J.Wilson is what T.Matthieu will become without the hype. A good role player. I would even say J.Wilson has more use because he hits people like a Man.

Sanu was hearing footsteps by the end of the game. Wilson does that to people.

A player I see developing the same way is Don Jones. D.Jones just has a little bit more natural ability. But those guys play for the love of the game. They lay it all on the line in every play.

Andy, right now we are chasing the Bolts and Rivers is out of his mind. But yeah, you're right, their remaining schedule is brutal, toughest in the NFL. I have a hard time seeing them hold onto the last spot.

If we handle the Jets, that spot may very well be ours..

Haha, still lvoe the quote of Don Jones saying he wanted to slam Harry Douglas on that fumble. Awesome stuff...

Andy NJ...

I don't see you having KC or Denver in the Wild Card hunt.....

Only one of them can win the AFC west.....

Kris, sounds like Andy is already conceeding one spot to one of those two teams ... at least that how i read it..

Kris,

Im talking final Wild Card spot because KC or Denver will surely get 1st WC.

Rarely post but have a serious concern if you guys have any input or have had already:

Why are all the rookies being seasoned? Fresher bodies second half of the season on top of learning the game? Or Philbin is doing like he did with Oliver Vernon and Lamar miller and waiting till sophomore season to unleash them?

Got it....

Got it...

5 teams...1spot....

Toronto,

This is how I see it. And if my prediction holds true or close to it, particularly the tie breaker over Chargers is needed. Ravens worry me the most cause they would get the tie breaker but they are Jeckyl and Hyde so not sure what to expect.

Tampa -W
San Diego - W
Carolina - L
@Jets - L
@Pitt - W
Pats - L
@Bills - W
Jets - W

Hey, maybe they run the table and win the AFC East outright.

Play calling by Sherman in the 2nd half...to be successful in the NFL, you can't be predictable. Stop having RT say GO or GO GO when running and passing. Also tell you're running backs to stop running into the backs of your own linemen at the line of scrimmage. People running through people has never worked. Running over people yes, but that is not what is happening in those situations. Get that right and we are rolling!

I may even fli flop between beating perhaps Pats or sweeping Jets and then losing to Bills. The divisional games are key as well as Chargers.

Mark,

You know Dashi and a Couple others(You, Odin, F4L, P78, and a Couple others) thought all along that D.Jordan was drafted to play LB, Not DE.

D.Jordan will fit great in that D.Thomas/L.Taylor Role. Rover LB. What Von Miller plays.

We should be running an Attack 4-3. Not a Cover 2 type 4-3.

D.Jordan can be that Rush LB that brings it when he can but can also cover some of the games best TEs with his Size and Speed. Sort of like what J.Seau use to do in his prime.

I would have Wake and Misi on 1 Side and O.Vernon and DJ on the other. With Ellerbe, Soliai and Starks up the Middle. Rotating Odrick and Shelby to keep players fresh in the front 7. With Wheeler backing up Jenkins who will be backing up Ellerbe.

Again, Coyle has the talent that he should have no excuse to run whatever he wants at a high level. It isn't like the Offense where Sherman is trying to make Chicken Salad.

Andy::

Personally, I believe the Jets game on the road would be easier to win than the game in Pittsburg.

Also, Carolina doesn't seem to pose as many threatening players as the Bengals did. Giovanni Bernard is a more elusive RB that this team struggles with compared to Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams. Bengals also had a better receiving core. Only thing I see is Newton being able to beat us. Maybe our DC will have Reshad Jones spy him the entire game to avoid the big play with his legs.

Andy, I think 3-1 is on the horizon over the next four games.

The last four don't look so ominous anymore either and we will beat the Pats at home..

Mark::

I think it's quite possible that we win the next 4 games. This 11 day mini-bye week will be good for Patterson and Wake to rest up. And for Martin to come back?

Andy,

I only see to games as maybe. The other games we should win or have enough talent to win those games.

TB- W
SD- W, tough game but the chargers will be traveling, at SD this game would've been a toss up
Car- W, Maybe, They have a pretty good Defense.
@Jets- W
@Pitt-W
Pats-W, Maybe, we should've whooped them, hopefully we don't play the Pats and The Refs at home. Makes the game just a little more difficult.
@Buf-W, payback win
Jets- W

All of our games are very winnable. Yes, as a Homer I think we can win the rest of our games. But at worst The Dolphins should go 5-3. Realistically, this team has no reason to at least go 6-2. The talent is there, and maybe the light finally turned on.

This team should've been an 11-5 team his season. But I will be OK with 9-7 or 10-6.

* only see two games as maybe.

6-10 again

And Henne is better than D.Brees

Andy,

I see the CAR game as a W, more so than the SD one. But is just a hard excercise to predict this team's play. Will we get the Fins of the Indy or CIN games or will we get the team from the 2nd half of teh NE game?

Looking at our schedule, we could beat all the rest of the teams if the 'good' Fins show up. Even the NE game looks winnable considering how banged up the Pats are. But of course, you never know when or if the 'bad' fins will show up.

Evaluator

I agree that Pitt at home is tougher then Carolina playing in Miami but I actually have caught quite a few Panthers games and like their young squad. Pitt is old and slow to me and the matchups favor us vs them. But you could be right. I'd easily think a swap of W/L there is reasonable. I just think Miami weathered the storm in so many ways last night. I don't care how they got the win they got it. They have a favorable schedule with all 3 teams with winning records left on the schedule in Miami. Winnable games vs Bucs and 2 vs Jets.

If they were able to perservere to 4-4 with a brutal early schedule then the 2nd half of the season a game better at 5-3 is attainable for sure.

Ravens worry me the most. But at the same time Miami just has to keep taking care of their own business.

Dashi, I agree completely. Usually when d-co's are asked, why don't you play more aggressive, their standard answer would be "well you need the rigght personnel". Well Coyle has excellent pressure DTs, excellent bookends, and DBs and LBs that can rush. So an element like Jordan being mixed in should be a co-ordinator's wet dream. He should have no base responsibility and be a "joker" in the truest football sense. Coyle up until yesterday has wasted a bevy of riches by being lax, passive, if not scared. Now that Wake is back there is no excuse, I expect him to bring it every week and for God's sake, Jordan can't be a worse tackler than Wheeler and does everything else better. Get him on the field!!
