How to fix the top of the Dolphins organization

Shortly after the 2012 season ended, the Dolphins and Dan Marino talked informally about the possibility of the Hall of Fame quarterback one day joining the organization in some undetermined capacity. Marino, who works for CBS Sports, did not pursue the opportunity but the door was left open to the possibility.

Today I also reported in my column that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross tried to hire former Colts and Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy in an advisory capacity.

Well, that's all well and good.

But the Dolphins, in full retreat on the field with five losses in six games and fielding more letters and calls from angry fans than they can answer, need to be more aggressive with Dungy. I believe the Dolphins should chase Dungy as their top executive to help turn this hapless organization around.

I am not advocating Dungy should be hired as the head coach.

Let me repeat: I don't want Dungy as the coach. Even Dungy doesn't want Dungy as the head coach.

I want Dungy as the face of the franchise to pick a new coach (check his record on finding coaching talent) or making a career decision on the current one. I want Dungy leading an organiazation that clearly lacks leadership. I want him hiring a general manager, if indeed Ross is of the mind to go in another direction there.

I want him setting the culture. I want him bringing respect back to the Dolphins. I want a football man who has come up throught the football ranks heading the football team.

Let's face it, Stephen Ross is not a football man. He is a wonderful business man and real estate developer. But that does not qualify him as a football man. Dolphins president and CEO Tom Garfinkel is likely a fine corporate officer. He comes from a baseball background. But he is not a football man.

I don't want either of them picking the next Dolphins coach or GM if that is the direction the Dolphins are going. I don't even see them as qualified to decide the fate of the current Dolphins coach and GM. Seriously, what does Ross or Garfinkel know? Anyone looking at Ross's track record would question that. Anyone looking at Garfinkel's inexperience would question that.

Anyone who would be comfortable with that is apparently quite comfortable with the past four seasons of Dolphins history.

Mando..we should listen to this why?...after you suggested we should go all in for Wallace. How's that working out? You pushed to the hilt for it and it's been mostly just a bad experience.

I don't believe Dungy would be any good for this team. I saw a lot of underachieving on all of his teams. The fact is he only won one SB with a damn good team. Now that does take coaching but still because of that you want to give him the keys.

Philbin is new to being a Head Coach.

I believe he's catching on quickly. He's made mistakes, but he catches them, owns up, learns fast and moves on.

Those that say he's stoic or robotic haven't paid attention lately. It started with the New England game. It actually started earlier, but in New England, the way the Refs blatantly ripped us off, that's when it began in earnest.

I saw him furrow up his big forehead. He turned red at times and was even screaming as he ran down the sideline trying to get the refs attention. He was yelling at players, coaches, assistants. He even screamed at the ball boy when Sturgis missed his kick!

Becoming a Head Coach has been a learning process for Philbin. Those that took part in his hiring knew this would be the case. He's had to deal with a lot by inheriting Parcell's antiquated(1980's Power running/Strong D) mess. Cleaning house and starting up a rebuild hasn't done his career any favors either. Being honest, do you think Parcell's would have quit if he thought the slop-fest of a team he slapped together had half a chance? ~NO!~ He knew he blew it and he knew that after his "Handiwork" The Phins were YEARS away. That's what Philbin was handed.

I think Philbin is doing Good, all things considered. I think he has the right mindset and absolutely the right philosophy too Coach in today's Pass Happy NFL. He's smart and knows what it takes too win. He doesn't waste time with all the dumb stuff. He's becoming a SOLID NFL Caliber Head Coach.

Having said all that, his friendship with Mike Sherman just might be his Achilles Heel. Sherman's problem sounds simple, but I'm sure a Head Doctor like Oscar could have a field day taking him apart.

It sounds simple, but it's very, very complicated and exacerbated I'm sure by any numbers of issues(age, superiority complex, successful in a different era, won't take criticisms well, etc, etc). In a nutshell, Sherman is "Coaching" and "Game Planning" like he has a Marino or Farve at QB, Barry Sanders in the backfield and John Taylor and Jerry Rice out wide. and lets not forget, he's SURE that Egnew will soon be playing like Tony Gonzales.

In other words, Sherman calls it like his offense is totally together and can do it all. He doesn't acknowledge that we have strengths and weaknesses, therefor he can't game plan for them, let alone play-call for them. There are things he can do to neutralize opponents defenses and there are things he can do to maximize our strengths and minimize our weaknesses. Failing to realize them, there's a MAJOR disconnect between our game planning/play-calling verses our strengths, weaknesses and execution.

This will be Philbin's toughest obstacle in becoming a Good to Great Head Coach in the NFL. I think it was Larry Csonka that once said, "Shula would cut his own Mother if it would make the Miami Dolphins a better team."

Philbin has to cut bait with Sherman. I use to think he was the guy. But since he's been here in Miami, you can tell there's something wrong. He's just not getting it. Maybe the game has simply passed him by, I don't know. I think it's more than that though. I think it's some deep seated psychological problem. Something to do with all the Gig's he's had, combined with his age and the fact he's already "Been There" once with Farve and Co. Maybe he's just NOT hungry enough, who knows!

Whatever Sherman's problem might be, I don't really care. This will be Philbin's biggest obstacle and his biggest test in becoming an NFL Head Coach. I hope he passes because I think the guy has what it takes.
========================

PS: Oscar, you're the Doctor, Brother, what's your take on Sherman?

Just wondering Mando what exactly has that advisory committee come up with that Dungy is already a part of?

Tell me how he's a game changer at this point of his career? How's he going to impact the culture of the team or provide leadership with him being the face of the franchise? Please explain in better detail...I'm just not seeing it all.

odin...it appears to me like underachievement is rampant all over this team. It's more than just Sherman. We consistently get beat on ST, Defense and Offense. We come out to start games flat and jittery. Those all point to Philbin. Sure maybe he's learned some but the end results aren't too good so far. Maybe he can turn it around but time is running out on Philbin. His honeymoon period is over.

BTW..it's been challenged that Oscar is a Doctor at all...response is still pending. What say you Oscar?

Odin,
Philbin should have cut Sherman a long time ago. Harbaugh did so with Camoron and they got better overnight. Same with Coyle. So ok Philbin is learning on the job but at what point is he going to get a pass too for not even have his team ready to play from the get go.

If the new reports are true and more players are going to come forward about Cogs -and others- bullying no way can Philbin survive that. I, unfortunately, think there is way more to this sad story and the worst part will actually be the massive CYA the Phins keep doing.

If all of that is true then yes Mando is right you will need to bring someone really well respected in all circles as a GM and can not think of many more people than Dungy.

Here we go yet again. More of the same BS media hype..If you go to the source Jason Cole it's nothing but some could bes and maybes. It says 2 dolphins MAY speak out against Incognito according to 2 unnamed sources. About dinners and physical intimidation. Haven't we learned to wait for facts and the investigation to conclude yet? Sheesh.

I like Tony Dungy, both a a man and as a fotball person. I can not see him giving up his job on NBC to come to Miami and take over this dysfunctional mess of a franchise. Of course in 07 when Huizinga hired Parcells we all thought that our savior had arrived and look how that turned out.

I see you all missed the gist of this article.

The only reason Armando is so high on Dungy is because like him, he is a major bible thumper. This is nothing more of Armando's personal agenda of praising those that follow in his footsteps and bashing those that go to strip clubs.

Dungy is weak. All-World Peyton got him a Ring.

These committees Ross assembled are ridiculous. They can only get in the way.

The defense seems like it has gotten worse this year.If it dosent improve Coyle can be added to the list of Dolphin coaches who stubbornly want to make the players fit into his system as opposed to implementing a system that takes advantage of the starters on the defense.
To me it was clear that after 3-0 start if this team didnt end up with a winning record it was on the coaches.
I dont think changing all of them in one off-season is very good after all they already did this when Philbin came in and brought in Sherman and Coyle. Its time to break up the clique and let Philbin stand on his own call his own plays(he is an offensive coordinator)and make his own draft choice with the help of the teams scouts. If he dosent make it work like this then it will be obvious that he is not cut-out to be a head coach.
In the Dolphins situation I think it is better to simplify the teams management structure instead of having individuals do each job.I am also taking into consideration that Ross the decision maker is already defending Philbin.

Nothing wrong with Sherman, odin, he just sukks as an O coordinator.

1. Philbin already works closely with the scouts.
2. Philbin has never called plays in the NFL.

Now, sit down, Sit Down! Do you kids really believe that if Shula, JJ and BP as VP couldn't make it here, Tony Dungy will? You have extra homework for Tonight!

Old Screenname (and not clueless in his own mind)What do your 2 points prove that Philbin already works with the scouts thats great he can make his own picks Philbin has never called his own plays so what do you think babies are born with the ability to call their own plays.
They have already changed all the coaches in the same year it hasnt worked or do you have any proof that it has?The cancer analogy cut out ALL the cancer OK but you have to know exactly where it is otherwise you will be throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

Armando is an idiot. I use to think Omar Kelly was the idiot but I was wrong, way wrong because it is Armando that is the dumbshyt. He is also very arrogant and makes things up and lies constantly. In other words he's a typical bible thumping christian. In no way does he live his life by the teachings and morals of JC. But he will tell everyone else how terrible and "unchristian" they are. How do you still have a job?

NEW SCREENNAME

Come back when you figure out how to compose a grammatically correct sentence. I won't debate illiterate idiots.

If I were Steven Ross, I would hire Nat Moore as president and CEO of the Miami Dolphins and let the chips fall where they may.

Youse People in Church now?

It is AMAZING how far the education system has declined in this country. Bloggers, presumably adults, write like they are in second grade. Perhaps the studies are correct in that spectator sports tend to draw in the most illiterate fans. Let's face it, anyone who reads literature couldn't possibly write so poorly as many do here.

Even Armando himself is an embarrassingly poor writer incapable of editing his own work.

Why did J Philbin, a strong proponent of building through the draft, support so many key position Free Agent acquisitions?

Why did J Philbin, wanting young receivers for an interchangeable receiver corps, support the acquisition of one-trick-pony Mike Wallace?

Why did J Philbin, demanding that players be of high character, OK the acquisition of Bryant McKinnie?

These and other questions, inquiring minds want to know.

Armando bullied one of his readers and didn't lose his job! What's up with that? I call for heads to roll at TMH! Give Barry Armandos blog. Barry has integrity. Armando doesn't even know how to spell it.

I haven't even seen the 1 trick Wallace is supposedly good at.

Really is this advisory committee going to do anything but put in opinions and set some guidelines that probably only look good on paper. It's my opinion it was done for PR purposes as a knee jerk reaction to save face but logistically what goals do they have and what changes can they make from afar?

Furthermore...Ross should have waited for these "big" change announcements until after the game. Look Mr. Ross on gameday everything needs to be about the game not you or your interviews. Timing is everything and you just gave the team another distraction.

Old screenanme I dont need to debate someone who can compose a correct sentence but dosent know how to debate but thinks they do.Your two points against my opinion dosent convince anyone that 1Philbin cannot make his own picks 2 Philbin has never called his own plays,do you think S Payton knew how to call his own plays before he got the job.
Old Screename you can cry to boot me or do it yourself because you are not playing the part of a WRITER you are one of those cream puffs

Bill Cale - Ireland makes the final decisions, not Philbin.

You know what I'm uncomfortable with? Armando still writing for TMH. Bullied a reader. Limited insight. Burned all bridges with current staff. Zero integrity. Review and dismiss the CLOWN!

How to fix Ross and co.?
Cianide.

Old screenanme I dont need to debate someone who can compose a correct sentence

Posted by: NEW SCREENNAME | November 17, 2013 at 08:14 AM

So they why are you?

These people really are just plain stupid.

I don't agree that Ireland does make all the final decisions without major input from Philbin. I don't see their working relationship that way. I think we witnessed that on Hard Knocks with Vontae. Without the blessing of Philbin that deal doesn't happen. Ireland did not approach that as an authoritarian decision but rather as someone building a consensus decision.

Front Office 101; we know Philbin supported these acquisitions publicly, so are you suggesting that Philbin privately argued against them and Ireland overruled him?

Duh this is your grammatically correct sentence?

Old screenname I dont need to debate someone who can compose a correct sentence

SO THEY WHY ARE YOU? you lost me in your grammatically correct world Who is They are you speaking to they or you
Where did you go to grammer school?

I agree with Armando's column, especially in light of the allegations that Incognito sexually harassed a woman volunteer at a Dolphins golf tourney back in 2012. It speaks terribly of the Dolphins organization, from owner to GM to the players who were present that day; that is, if this crime actually occurred, nothing was done about it and Incognito was left in a leadership position on the team and later assigned to "toughen up" Martin. I'm past caring about this whole so-called "bullying" incident. To me, the more fundamental issue is this alleged incident, because it speaks to everything else.

Where do we start to try to make heads or tails out of this mess that has proved to be the graveyard of Great Coaches and Players? I believe it starts with Ownership. It is no coincidence that the abrupt decline in the Miami Dolphin's fortune started after the Joe Robbie family, after his death, decided to sell the Team. Now, why did Joe Robbie make the Organization work and Huizinga and Ross, the subsequent 2 Owners of the Team have not been able to put a successful product on the Field? (need further work on this)

Before I go away one last comment unless you continue to attack then will reappear I admit my sentence structure would not please an old english teacher but I didnt think it would matter on this a sports blog where most of the characters(screenanmes)read like a comic strip.

Very interested in seeing if this team comes fighting today. This is a must win today and the coaches and players need to show us something. This is a team with it's back up against the wall. These guys have to be feeling the heat of underachievement. Damn it guys where is your pride? I don't want to see guys laughing on the sideline unless your up by 3 touchdowns in the 4th quarter at the end of the game. Enough of the distractions and excuses it's time to play ball. It's time to scrap the conservatism get serious and come out and play like the Bucs did last week. Let's see some imagination, trickery, strategy, hunger and passion.

It's the QB MORONS eh?

;we know Philbin supported these acquisitions publicly

Posted by: billcale | November 17, 2013 at 08:28 AM

We know NOTHING. When will you gullible fools ever realize that GM's and coaches only give the public scripted rhetoric???

Isn't it totally obvious to you yet?

How can you possibly buy into ANYTHING they say?

bill call is a complete fraud.

Don't take him seriously - he makes stuff up and then doesn't back it up when challenged.

Dungy? Really Mando? Didn't we try that a few years back with Parcells? A respected x-coach with no front office experience sounds like Parcells 1.0 to me.

The chargets held the broncos to 28 pts. That's 20 below their avg. So they will hold the pathetic Tpuke to 0 pts. And the san dogs will rout the hapless Duhphins Eh?

cocoa, as someone mentioned, dungy is a bible freak just like armando. armando is not objective, he is biased to his own kind.

Anything like Parcells would be a huge upgrade over the clowns we have now.

Mike Sherman cant make chcken salad out of chicken shyt.

I have 2 monkeys at metro zoo that would be a huge upgrade of the buffoons that are there now eh?

Guess what I saw yesterday? A naked bootleg...hello Sherman? Strategy you know leave the other team guessing at least some of the time? Not lining up with everyone in the stadium knowing what you are going to do with a struggling oline and run the play over and over again. A flea flicker...what about a reverse? or running a sweep and throwing back to the other side of the field to our QB? What about T-hill going back for a pass and taking off with the ball?

How stupifd can Shermn be, Tbum got him axed at Aand M and now Tpuke will get axed at the Duhfins , stupid eh?

Armando,

It was reported last night that 2 more Dolphin players have come forward with bullying complaints against Incognito. Do you know who they are? And doesnt that support J Martin?

The problem with yahoo's in this world is they think they can put lipstick on a pig and make it beautiful.

The Dolphins are the armpit of the world according to the media. They will dis the dolphins at every turn.

No one savior will fix it because the league and media will find a way to screw us.yes the officials are biased, cant you tell?

Its pretty clear that both Ireland and Philbin knew Incognito was holdig team OL meetings at a strip club.

and when i say officials, im not just talkin about the refs.

holding

The new hc is Lovie Smith.failbin sucks period. Great west coast offense. In his 25 games as a hc the highest points scored in a game has been 28, once. Garbage!

Strongly principled J Philbin would never let it be known publicly that he and J Ireland were disagreeing over player acquisitions. That would be bad for the team and the organization- he would take a bullet, first. This is what S Ross sees. Tough to axe a guy like this.

Okay Bloggers,

Some of you have speculated or concluded that Martin is Gay. One blogger has stated that his "gaydar" goes off when looking at Martin. Mando says he will ask the tough question when doing his work; however, we all know he will not ask the players on record if Martin is gay. Since at least one of the player's wives, Mrs. Grimes, is very honest with her opinions, which frankly are also formulated with her husband's opinions, why doesn't one of you bloggers who is on twitter ask Mrs. Grimes if Martin is Gay. Then we could get a straight answer and blow up the media world by getting to the truth on why Martin is doing what he is doing.

For those saying Armando is "ANTI-DOLPHINS", here's definive proof he sin':

"I want him setting the culture. I want him bringing respect back to the Dolphins. I want a football man who has come up throught the football ranks heading the football team."

Here's Definitive Proof Armando Is Sick And Tired of Losing Just Like Any Other Miami Dolfan:

"Let's face it, Stephen Ross is not a football man.
Anyone who would be comfortable with that is apparently quite comfortable with the past four seasons of Dolphins history."

So, remember this next you consider bashing him as "ANTI-DOLPHINS".

I agree 100% with Armando, even if it's not Tony Dungy, it can never be an inexperienced "Jeff Ireland-type" ever again!

Who cares if Martin is gaydar or strader. You really don't want to open that can of worms in the midst of the current possible lawsuit that could be pending against the Dolphins by the Martin camp.

Where do you people come up with this stuff, are you writing your own material, or pen paling from "One Flew Over The Coo-coo's Nest"?

And while they're at it, bring back the old logo. The new logo / color scheme sucks and it's already permanently tarnished.

I wouldn't oppose Lovie Smith as the HC. The guy took CRAP Bears team to the SB and playoffs with...Rex Grossman, that alone is outstanding. However if Dungy is the GM I think he should also name the OC, an area Smith struggled with. The new OC should be someone young and energetic, with a creative offense mind.

The HC without a doubt must be one with previous HC experience or chances will be great we get more of the same learning on the job. Philbin will learn from this and may get a chance elsewhere later but this is too much of a mess for him to all of the sudden start over. Retaining him will be like a having a new HC in many ways, he will have to get new coordinators and assistants just about everywhere. We need a clean slate and a fresh start, more importantly the players do, they have lost the desire to play for him.

Where are all the people who were clamoring for TE Jared Cook in the offseason? He hasnt done shyte! Yeah, you, Craig Moron! What do you have to say now, PAL? Show your face, Moron!!!

When you read this, maybe you'll realize how stupid you sound when you open your Moron Mouth.

I don't care about strongly principled or taking a bullet for the team. Ross is bringing in non football people into the equation and is really going to look bad if he does and Philbin flounders which I think is a good possibility. He'll make the franchise a bigger joke nationally. Honestly, I just want wins or at least to show the team is progressing. Is belichek strongly principled what about Sean Payton? Ross is crazy if he thinks Philbin isn't a BIG part of the way this team is playing.
