Dolphins America's team: For wrong reasons

In the last three days I've gotten calls and texts from former players and current players. I talked to people from coast to coast. I've turned on the TV and seen the Dolphins on every broadcast and cable station available.

The Dolphins are a hit!

They're national!

And it is terrible.

The Dolphins, you see, are a national story now for all the wrong reasons. The team's name? Sullied. Reputation? In the dumpster and on fire. The narrative? When is Joe Philbin being fired, when is Jeff Ireland being fired, when is Dawn Aponte losing her power, when is Stephen Ross selling?

By the way, speaking of Ross. He lives in New York City. You know what he had with his morning coffee if he picked up the New York Daily News today? A-hole

I present the back page of Friday's New York Daily News.

The Washingon Post, Los Angeles Times and New York Times have written stories localizing the current Dolphins scandal. The New York Post and Daily News both sent reporters to South Florida to cover the story. One Post columnist told me Thursday, "My newspaper can't get enough of this story."

And the problem with that for you and the Dolphins? People are laughing now. Not with you. Not with them. At them. At you for supporting them. (At me for covering them, by the way). The Dolphins an object of scorn and mocking.

None of this is graceful. None of it has a positive side.

The Dolphins are getting punked.

But don't get the idea that I think they're victims. They are not. Yes, the media is over the top and the attention is hysterical and overblown. But the Dolphins brought this plague upon themselves. It is of their own birthing.

They had Incognito in a position of team leadership. Leadership in the locker room and administration failed to see any signs of wrongdoing -- or at least that's the contention. Philbin? Offensive line coach Jim Turner? No idea? The personnel department was good with both Incognito and Martin on the team and actually counted heavily on both -- because, after all, Martin was supposed to protect quarterback Ryan Tannehill's blindside and Incognito was supposed to protect Martin and help him grow into the job. Really?  And Aponte, who edits Philbin's post-game locker room speeches meticulously but fails to remove that uncomfortable part where he's reading from an index card ... Why did she allow the public service announcement at Sun Life Stadium that educates fans on civility and behavior to star ... Incognito?

Look, the people within the Dolphins organization claiming complete ignorance of the apparent tension in Martin's mind over Incognito and others are either lying, which makes them complicit, or out of touch, which makes them incompetent.

Either way, it is grounds for dismissal.

The media didn't put Martin and Incognito in that locker room. The media's job is not to monitor the intimate relationships among teammates. Don't shoot the messenger even if the message gets too loud at times.

The Dolphins are a sad national joke now because the Dolphins put themselves there. That story about Incognito abusing a volunteer golf assistant at a team sponsored event? The team said it would handle the situation and the way it was handled was paying her to keep quiet. The National Football Post today reported Incognito called offensive line meetings at a strip club and fined players if they didn't show up. Sure, you can chalk this up to boys being boys, I guess, if you're a morally corrupt individual. But then you allow Incognito to be a member of the leadership council? You put him on the stadium HD screen preaching good behavior?

A coach, aware of Incognito's penchant for drinking and past drug use, overrides the player vote for leadership council. Joe Philbin this week hid behind it, saying it was players, not him who made Incognito a team leader.

(Note to coach: It's not a democracy. You know this. Did you forget in this one instance?)

Some fans see what's going on. And they've had enough. Fans have been writing to me and telling me they are through with the franchise. Others say they'll never buy a ticket again until major changes in leadership are enacted.

Consider that the Dolphins had 70,660 people at Sun Life Stadium for the season home opener. Then 68,342 for the second home game. Then 60,592 for the third home game. And 52,388 for the fourth home game. Notice the trend?

Fans were abandoning this team in droves before the current scandal. You think any part of the last week is going to convince them to return?

We've seen this kind of situation before. You'll recall the New England Patriots had this little scandal called Spygate. And their reputation suffered. You'll recall the New Orleans Saints had this little scandal called Bountygate. And their reputation suffered.

Both teams got slimed. Both teams forged ahead. Both teams mostly recovered.

But both those teams enjoyed a reservoir of goodwill the Dolphins don't possess. The Patriots had three Super Bowl wins in their pocket. The Saints also recently won a Lombardi trophy. The coaches and owners that presided over those franchises in the time of crisis were the same that presided over the franchise in the best of times. So they got a pass.

The Dolphins get no pass. Stephen Ross has not presided over one winning season during his four-and-one half seasons as owner. Jeff Ireland has not put together one winning team during his four-and-a-half years as GM. Joe Philbin's career record is 11-13.

Fans recognize this. Media recognize this. These facts are not in dispute.

None of this sewage sandwich that is the Incognito-Martin-NFL scandal is good for business or morale or reputation. All of it reeks. And now everyone on the Dolphins smells bad.

Incognito = Major A-hole

ARMANDO-

ONCE AGAIN YOU PROVE HOW MUCH YOU ARE AN IDIOT.

YOU STINK. YOU SMELL BAD.

PUTZ.

Haha, the attendance has nothign to do with Richie cleaning his club on DUH!'s hoohoo. It has everything to do with the front running fanbase and the team not having the best record in the division...

Armando, is their anyone you respect on the Miami Dolphins?

Media is not blameless, so don't try to hide their BS because the team has a mess.

Never thought I would agree with Soldy on anything ....

Dolphins are a JOKE

I think the NFL, when punishments are handed out, should take Miami's 2nd round draft pick for the next ten years. They would probably improve.

I FIND THIS WHOLE THING BAFFLING.

THE MEDIA - INCLUDING ARMANDO LOVE TO MAKE THIS BULLYING THING INTO THE SECOND COMING OF HITLER'S REGIME.

YET ON EVERY SINGLE NFL TEAM THERE ARE RAPISTS, OR WIFE BEATERS, OR DRUNK DRIVERS.

TRUE CRIMINALS.

MEN THAT SHAME THE HUMAN RACE AND GET FREE PASSES.

YET THESE REPORTERS SLOBBER OVER THEIR NAKED BODIES AND APPLAUD THEIR WORK. FANS TOO.

HYPOCRITES.

ARMANDO IS A HYPOCRITE, AN AWFUL ONE.

I AM ASHAMED TO BE CUBAN-AMERICAN TODAY BECAUSE OF ARMANDO. HE'S TAKEN HIS AMERICAN DREAM OF A PROFESSION AND MADE A MOCKERY OF ALL OF US.

ARMANDO, YOU TRULY SUCK.

Armando, this is the best blog post you've ever done. I can tell you put a lot of thought into it and reached these conclusions carefully. Excellent work.

I, too, am through as a Miami Dolphin fan until there are major changes in the team's management, coaches, players and culture. We all need to change in life. The Dolphins need to change now.

This team has sullied its reputation. The players supporting Incognito in public statements did not feel right. Silence would have been far wiser.

Jason Whitlock wrote a sobering article on ESPN.com; I do not know how much of what he wrote is accurate, but the article was both sobering and sad.

I will continue to read your work, but I'm through as a Dolphin fan. Enough is enough.

Yeah, taking Irescums draft picks wont be punishment LOL

SIGH-

YOU ARE AN IDIOT.

WHO ARE YOU GOING TO CHEER FOR NOW?

PICK A TEAM WITHOUT A SCUMBAG ON IT. WITHOUT A DRUNK DRIVER. OR A RAPIST. OR WIFE BEATER.

EVERY TEAM HAS CRIMINALS.

SO STOP WATCHING SPORTS ALL TOGETHER. YOU MORON.

To 'The REal Don Soldy',

It's extremely rare when I write against a poster on a blog.

Reading your post at 12:29 makes me realize why I do not waste my time replying to those who cannot use their mind well.

How can anyone be a fan of this garbage franchise?

Wasn't Ireland GM in 2008? Barring that minor detail, I agree 100% with EVERYTHING you said Mando. These guys claiming this is nothing and Martin is the real culprit are deceiving themselves. I frankly don't have allegiance to one single person in the organization now. I have allegiance to the team name in total, not the individual parts. There's no Zach Thomas here, there's no Dan Marino. There's not one single person (coach or player) that done ANYTHING respectable for the Miami Dolphins. Wake is the closest one, helping bring a division title home and also has some personal recognition (Pro Bowls), but that's about it (others close are Soliai and Starks). There are players I like, but many haven't been here long enough to become cornerstones of the team.

Like I said, win, and (mostly) all is forgiven (at least with me). When I say win I mean MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. DON'T make the Playoffs, and all bets are off. Don't get past .500 and ewwwweeeee, mama mia, mi dios, no one will be safe from the hurricane that bowls through the organization! Let's see how much laughter and pranking is going on once that happens.

Disagree Armando. Well agree that we are being slimed but I disagree that it is their fault because just like every other person that is sliming us you are ignoring what people in the locker room are saying and you are putting out one-sided calculated crap that is influencing this in a negative manner. You keep leaving out one possibility: What if Martin has an agenda? What if this is all crap and a team is being railroaded? I brought up a scenario where you have proof of someone being threatened of being cut on TV (upper management), belittled on cable TV, looked down upon and embarrased in local papers by being called weak/soft by players, his body type ridiculed. Witness coaches telling people to get after him and stay on him. Yet you are still pumping this crap. Players on national TV in the same sentence saying this never happened in our locker room..."but when it did happen in our locker room this is how it was handled." WTF is that?! The coach didn't pick the leadership council, the players suggested it and they made it lst year. The same leadership council Martin was on when he was having his hair dyed. The players elected this years leadership council. where is it in the NFL mandate that you must have a leadership council? There is none. It came about because the players wanted to identify if there was a problem IDENTIFIED (key word is identified) going on with a player, they would want step in before the player ws cut. This came about because of Chad Johnson. Talk to Egnew Armando ask the guy who was being called soft and needed to toughen up if he was being bullied.

YOU DONT REPLY BECAUSE THERE IS NO WAY TO REPLY.

YOU ARE A HYPOCRITE. LIKE EVERY ONE ELSE LIVING AND DYING BY UPDATES ON THIS STORY.

WHY DONT WE GO AHEAD AND DIG UP THE PAST SKELETONS ON EVERY NFL PLAYERS AND SUSPEND ALL OF THOSE WITH SOMETHING SIMILAR.

THEN WE WOULD HAVE NO PLAYERS LEFT.

YOU WATCH THESE MEN TO BE ENTERTAINED. YOU DONT WATCH THEM BE MODEL CITIZENS. WHO THE HELL ARE YOU KIDDING?

YOURE A HYPOCRITE. SO IT ARMANDO. SO IS EVERY FOOTBALL FAN ACTUALLY CARING ABOUT THIS NOW.

OH, NOW YOU CARE? NOW??? WHEN BRANDON MARSHALL WAS HERE ALL PEOPLE CARED ABOUT WAS DROPPED TDS. NOT THAT HE BEAT HIS WIFE 4 TIMES.

YOU WANT THESE MEN TO BE BOY SCOUTS? SHUT UP. YOU WANT THESE MEN TO ENTERTAIN YOU.

Screw the media...They are going to print and say whatever they want and any voice of reason will be drowned out. That is the state o America today. I am not a media basher but this whole story is completely out of control because the media wants it that way to generate more stories. The truth be damned. As part of the media you are a part of it Amando.

The media has turned this into a scandal. The first press conference should have went like this. 'Yes, well, apparently Martin is a p...sy. He will go on the NFI list and not collect pay. Richie is an undisputed leader on this team, and is unanimously loved by current and former teammates.' Next question

DC DOLFAN JUST POSTED EVIDENCE #1.

HE BRINGS UP PEOPLE THAT MADE HIM PROUD.

LIKE ZACH THOMAS AND DAN MARINO. FOR WHAT THEY DID ON THE FIELD.

NOT WHAT THEY DID AS MEN.

MARINO IS A WIFE-CHEATING SCUMBAG. BUT WE LOVE HIM. BECAUSE HE THROWS TOUCHDOWN PASSES. THATS THE ONLY REASON.

FUNNY HOW PEOPLE FORGET HOW EVEN THE GREAT PLAYERS ARE CRAPPY PEOPLE.

Folks enough with this garbage that we will lose draft picks as a result or punishment for this scandal. The Pats and Saints lost picks because what they did was detrimental to other teams.....it was in essence cheating hence the punishment. This scandal the Phins find themselves embroiled in is not a cheating or injury scandal that involves other teams. It is an in house scandal that became public due to Baby Huey Martin not manning up!! The penalty will come in the court of law in monetary damages and the court of public opinion as a stain on the organization.

Listening to Jim Rome right now and he is talking to Boomer Esiason about this unfortunate situation. Usually don't like what he says but he is being very honest saying that every team has a guy like Richie n the team and that its usually handled in house. He also said that all his teammates want him back on the team so that in itself tells you alot aoubt Richie the football player. He believes he will be playing in the NFL again.

Sigh is just here with his usual posts hoping to get a rise out of someone. Everyone is the same tone. Ignore him. He is lonely. Probably just needs a girlfriend.

Revenge of the nerds continues...

How is the media not responsible? They have ridden this case more than far worse issues, like Hernandez, Ray Lewis, how about Marshall's numerous visits by the police for battering women repeatedly?

Yet, the silly, trite media...harps on a bullying case all because of that attention grabbing N word.

Wanne be famous?

Go into your nearest shopping mall on a Saturday afternoon and just stand their screaming Neega until the police come. You will be national news.

The Herald should hire Martin as a sports writer, couldn't be worse. Well maybe not the sports writer but something to do with Womens issues !

Am I the only one who sees the media crucifying Incognito and the Dolphisn for what they do yet Mando and the NYPost publish that picture of Incognito??? Isn't that bullying??? Isn't that taking a shot at someone who can't defend themselves right now???

Interesting to see media stay unbias in all of this...

As I've gotten older (and hopefully) wiser, I can appreciate sports for the sportsmanship in addition to the winning. No team wins every game, but every player can be a sportsman of character.

I try to improve myself with various degrees of success and failures. But I'll always try to be a better person every single day.

How does this relate to the Dolphins?

I think, as a fan, the team should at least avoid destroying is credibility and reputation. The team can avoid being a disgrace. Who knows, if it changes, it may finally win again.

I like my team more now that they actually have a personality. They didn't lose close games in the past couple of years because they didn't have a star. The lost because they had no personality.
Every football movie I have ever watched, every game that I have ever watched, every football game I have ever played had one thing in common. There were always guys like Incognito. You loved it on your team and hated it when you played against them.
Famous line, Either we heel as a team or we die as individuals. And like him or not, Incognito was a teammate.
And what was Martin? Martin was anything but a teammate. He was an individual. Torn apart and afraid of not being able to keep up. Left guard, right guard? Who cares? He played as an individual and his stats stood out. He isn't going to play football any longer, not because he was harassed but because he isn't a good football player.
I would like to thank him however for removing his fat lazy butt of the team I cheer for.

I can just see Martin sitting down crying and his momma saying '...and then what did they say?' 'They said they were gonna @ my sister and come in her.' '...and then what did the bad men say sugar?'

I also see the media crucify someone and judging them as guilty although there are a tonne of conflicting facts in this case and the only "facts" are being leaked by Martin's side... which tends to be the media's side it appears.

Way to make sure you keep getting paid to make appearances on nationally syndicated programs while this drama unfolds. Nobody can say you're a bad businessman, Salguero.

Don Shula said it best the other day -- winning comes from have good people on and off the field. Enough said. No one ever won more.

WHEN IS TANNEHILL GOING TO STEP UP AND SHOULDER THE BLAME

Like a man

Dr S, alos mention that Martin voted Incognito to the leadership council ...

Sigh your such a bad troll. Jason Whitlock is an idiot and had his own racist incident with Jeremy Lyn. He can get slapped by Cogs for all I care.

Mando, what happened to looking at this objectively and waiting until the facts come out. I guess only when it serves your agenda.

Don Soldy, well said (can't believe I said that)

Posted by: THE REAL DON SOLDY | November 08, 2013 at 12:37 PM

EXACTLY! I'm not a priest. These aren't role models to me. These are professional athletes on the TEAM I am a fan of. I'm a FAN because I want to see them WIN. I don't care what happens outside of the facility.

D*MN RIGHT! If we were an elite team, always in the Playoffs, I would CARE LESS about this issue. I'd be fine with Incognito, be fine ditching Martin, be fine with ANYTHING the media wanted to say about the team, cause my response would be, "and what's our record again?" If we were 7-1, I'd be yawning at all this attention, like, "see you in the Playoffs."

What makes this issue have any meaning is exactly BECAUSE the team is mediocre. It gives people who critique the team something to point to as a reason they are mediocre. Maybe it is and maybe not, but in the end, the team is STILL MEDIOCRE.

I watch sport for the sport, not for all the puff pieces and individual stories about the incredible journeys. Once these players move on to other teams, I don't give 2 sh*ts about 'em (accept on Fantasy). I don't know these guys personally. And I know they could care less about me. They get paid to do what they do. So why, as a fan, should I care one way or the other, what happens in a player's life (outside of the sport)? There's a bunch of lowlifes in every profession (politicians, businessmen, lawyers, doctors, construction workers, etc.). Doesn't mean I might not utilize their services or patronize their establishments.

And if Dan Marino is "crappy", what's that make his wife, who obviously forgave him for his mistakes? Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

Mando, listen to Clabo.

He spent 9 years with a "real" NFL team and he has a guaranteed salary. He is not throwing the Dolphins under the bus. He has no loyalty to the Fins but he is telling it like it is.

Why don't you step up and support this franchise. The worst that can happen is for people to say you were loyal. What is wrong with that?

Shut up, Chad Henne!!

Mando-

Look, the people within the Dolphins organization claiming complete ignorance of the apparent tension in Martin's mind over Incognito and others are either lying, which makes them complicit, or out of touch, which makes them incompetent.

Read more here: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2013/11/in-the-last-three-days-ive-gotten-calls-and-texts-from-former-players-and-current-players-i-talked-to-people-from-coast-to-c.html#storylink=cpy

The players are claiming they had no knowledge of Martin's unhappiness. If that's true, then how would the staff know? I tend to believe the players...maybe Martin kept everything bottled up? Consider that possibility before crucifying the Dolphins staff.

The NY Daily News? Really Armando? New F$&^%ng York? And FinFans should care why, exactly? That's not the pot calling the kettle black, that's the pits of Hell calling the kettle black.

WE NEED TO BRING IN A VET QB IN FA THAT IS NOT AFRAID TO THROW THE BALL DOWN THE FIELD

Someone that Ross has confidence in.

This unknown sexual assault victim will (hopefully) be final ax for Jeff Ireland. There is no way this went down without him knowing. As a long time Dolphin fan, I am disgusted with what our beloved team has become. We are a joke... no.. we are THE joke of the NFL. We are the target of comedians, talk shows and more. I am seriously trying to figure out if my character will allow me to continue to cheer for this team, as it goes against everything I believe. I have been loyal.. TOO loyal actually. As an out of town fan, I already cancelled my Sunday Ticket renewal. I would NEVER spend a nickel on this team as it stands.

MIT,
We both know that if Henne were on the team then mando would have laid 100% of this off on him.
And Henne would have taken it and kept smiling.

It's obvious what Mandy's agenda is. Clicks sell! The same as the rest of the web-based media. More traffic means you can charge advertisers more money! It's very simple actually. The more people that visit a page, the longer they stay there the more likely an advertiser will pay for space. They more times they come back; even better.

Mandy's motivation is CLICKS. So, keep on coming!

ARMANDO IS NOT LOOKING FOR FACTS.

HES SAD HE DIDNT PICK UP THIS STORY FIRST. SO HES MAKING UP FOR IT BY SLURPING THE NATIONAL MEDIA CIRCUS AND GETTING ON EVERY RADIO SHOW AND WEBSITE HE CAN.

THE TRUE AMERICAN WAY. WHAT A SAD DAY TO CALL MYSELF A CUBAN AMERICAN LIKE HIM.

JEFF IRELAND SHOULD BE FIRED. NOT BECAUSE OF THIS, BUT BECAUSE HE IS AWFUL AT HIS JOB AT GETTING GOOD PLAYERS.

JONATHAN MARTIN SHOULD BE CUT. NOT BECAUSE HES A SISSY. BUT BECAUSE HES A BUST OF AN NFL LINEMAN WHO CANT BLOCK ANYONE.

RICHIE INCOGNITO IS MEDIOCRE, BUT WE HAVE NO ONE BETTER.

I WATCH THESE MEN TO ENTERTAIN ME. ITS A LIKE A CIRCUS. BUT WITH A WINNER AND A LOSER. TO LOOK FOR GOOD CITIZENS IS A JOKE. A FREAKING JOKE.

YOU WANT MODEL CITIZENS TO ENTERTAIN YOU? GO WATCH PEOPLE WORK TWO JOBS MAKING MINIMUM WAGE TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR FAMILIES. NOT COMMITTING CRIME. DOING THE WORLD AND THEIR FAMILIES SOME GOOD.

NFL PLAYERS ARE FREAK SHOWS. A CIRCUS. PUT IN A STADIUM TO ENTERTAIN US. NOW WE CARE ABOUT CHARACTER?

HYPOCRITES.

Count@ 12:53

Calm down on the NY bashing.
The only white people moving to Florida are retired, Jewish New Yorkers.

When this first blew up it smelled fishy, more from Martin's side than Cog's or the team's side, and that was before I knew Martin's parents were Harvard lawyers. Not saying Cog's and the Team are not trying to spin this to cover their arses, because they are, but just the way this whole thing has played out so far stinks of someone who wanted to quit, but did not want to forfeit the money. So you have this money grab. I still think that, and only time will tell if I am right or wrong. In the meantime the whole Dolphin franchise is the joke of the NFL. Though this is not the first time they are a joke in recent history, this time they have blown spygate and bountygate out of the water. Unfortunately for fans there is guilt by association making it hard to be a fan in public anymore.

Mando thanks for clarifying that the media are the real bullies here. Go cover the Jets if you care about New York BS so much.

Bad news travels and sells alot quicker than good news

ETF. Wrong. We have a huge population of Dominicans and PR's from the Bronx here in Orlando...Just sayin'

Mando.......if you don't the Phins in Miami......we'll take them in Los Angeles .......got plenty of room and better local press

How many times are you going to change your position on this topic Mando?

Marc @ 1:02

Do any of the PR/Dominican chicks dress in white cigarette pants, white tank top, white pumps, red lipstick and gold hoop earrings?

Puppets on a string...with the liberal press pulling the strings.....I will not bite. Cut both Martin and Cogs....lets move on we have a game on Monday Night Football against our cross state rivals

Mandy hasn't swayed much. He's generally been on the vagina side. Amazing that after being a sports reporter for 20 years he still doesn't "get it".

ETF. I think they ALL do.

Yeah, Armando, the people who got the team into this mess won't be the same people who get the team out. I'm hoping Ross realizes that. His team ownership has brought him some uncomfortable and downright embarrassing moments. Yeah... I'm sure this is the proverbial straw...

marc @ 12:47, ahhahaa!!

They will be lucky to win another game.
