Incognito considered black in Dolphins locker room

One of the most curious aspects of the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin story is how race has become very much a part of it outside the Dolphins locker room -- in the media and among fans and observers -- but not at all so far within the Dolphins locker room.

Think of this:

Richie Incognito left Jonathan Martin a voice mail that, among other things, called Martin a "half-n----r." And Dolphins players of color, knowing of the voicemail, have expressed no problems with Incognito.

"I don't have a problem with Richie," Mike Wallace said. "I love Richie."

"I don't think Richie is a racist," cornerback Brent Grimes said.

"Richie Incognito isn't a racist," tight end Michael Egnew said.

ESPN analyst and former Dolphins wide receiver Cris Carter has know Mike Pouncey since the player's childhood. Today Carter said on air he recently spoke to Mike Pouncey and the center, who is Incognito's friend, addressed race.

"They don't feel as if he's a racist, they don't feel as if he picked on Jonathan repeatedly and bullied him, but if they could do it all over again there would be situations that they might change but they’re very, very comfortable with Richie,” Carter said.

“They think it’s sad, not only that Jonathan’s not on the football team, but also that Richie is being depicted as a bigot and as a racist.”

How is this possible?

Well, I've spoken to multiple people today about this and the explanation from all of them is that in the Dolphins locker room, Richie Incognito was considered a black guy. He was accepted by the black players. He was an honorary black man.

And Jonathan Martin, who is bi-racial, was not. Indeed, Martin was considered less black than Incognito.

"Richie is honarary," one player who left the Dolphins this offseason told me today. "I don't expect you to understand because you're not black. But being a black guy, being a brother is more than just about skin color. It's about how you carry yourself. How you play. Where you come from. What you've experienced. A lot of things."

Another former Dolphins employee told me Martin is considered "soft" by his teammates and that's a reason he's not readily accepted by some of the players, particularly the black players. His background -- Stanford educated and the son of highly educated people -- was not necessarily seen as a strength or a positive by some players and it perpetuated in the way Martin carried himself.

And so -- agree with it or not, comprehend it or not -- this is a reason the Dolphins haven't turned on Incognito as a racist.

He better be sleeping with one eye open now

Understanding what it means to be a white man accepted into the culture of black men, you still have to be smarter. Rich man you can't say n....... On Tape. You already say it's like he's white, white people are litigious.

this is also why clueless media guys like shefter and greenberg need to shut up.....their so "insulted" and "shocked" and have ripped the Fin players/coaches, but they have no idea what they're talking about---their comments reflect their world, their attitudes, their backgrounds....but clearly doesnt align with many football players attitudes--greenberg mocked the idea of incognito being on the leadership council--he shouldnt, because to the guys that matter most, his teammates, he's a leader--like that, accept that or not....but our vote doesnt count in that locker room

so being educated in a bad thing now? unbelievable. some of these comments I'm reading on here are just astounding to me. Something is severely wrong in society.

Why discuss RI? He's done.

What goes around goes around??? Wow...thanks for that crazy logic...and who the hell takes momma/wife/sister jokes seriously??? I reckon my true hope was that you would storm out of the blog and not come back...

This whole issue has my head spinning. If Philbin or any coach had to give the "Code Red" then Martin should never have been drafted in the first place. I blame the GM for that. At the end of the season Ross has to clean house. Irleand, Philbin and the entire coaching staff. Richie should be realeased today and Martin at the end of the season. Now you give the new GM and coaching staff a clear indication of what is needed in Free Agency and the Draft.

Richie is anti Gay.
From the side you want to see.

When blacks stop using the N word the N word will go away....

All I know is THE WHOLE DAMN LINE PLAYED BETTER WITHOUT "BOTH" against theBengals. Ran the ball better than we have in over a yr and kept Tanny upright better than ALL SEASON, Cogsbis.a slow.moving mauler and.Martin is a Turstill,,, I hope they movenpast both of them and the sooner the better...

Martin is so smart and he is going to take advantage from all this.

GREAT post @ 1:04pm. That longer room is all that matters.

Comical to heat people say Cogs is a 'negative' or 'cancer' or whatever other crap they are making up from being spoon fed from the media. It's obvious the players don't feel that way as evidenced by them having him on leadership council.

'Locker room'

we need to accept, and respect, the fact that their world/workplace is very different than our world/workplace--and not pass judgement on it, on things we dont understand--we dont have to like it, or understand it....accept and respect, thats all

Martin texts Richie, tell him all is fine then runs out to Calif. and has his reps throw him under the bus knowing darn well it's all B/S. Makes me sick.

Kris is so dum

The leftist worship of the ghetto thug culture is the reason for the continued downfall of our society.

If you are ever on trial, and the facts of the case are more complicated than a bouncing ball, you better pray to whoever it is you pray to that Kris is not on your jury.

Did they put Martin on scardy cat reserve yet?

should have done it to get a roster spot.

drsamii - I love it! You got Jonathan Martined. Thats not only awesome but funny as hell. It can be used two ways - when someone narcs you out or when someone quits on you. Man, that MFer Jonathan Martined me!

The leftist worship of the ghetto thug culture is the reason for the continued downfall of our society. The illuminati has zombies like mudshark Miley Cyrus training the youth to be this way. Woe is the future.

It's also evidenced that he's never helped this team get to a winning record. NEVER! Got kicked off the Bills, kicked off the Rams. And this is the guy you people are putting up as a star on the team? I guess that's why this is a mediocre team forever.

His contract was up end of Season. Before all this, many here were saying he wouldn't get renewed (cause our OL SUCKS). But now all of a sudden he's a Pro Bowler and superstar and leader of the team.

If Jake Long was expendable, what's that make Incognito? I'll tell you, A JOKE!

go to heartiste dhot wordpress dhot com to begin your unlearning

The more I hear the more that I feel sorry for the Dolphin players especially those that continue to believe that Incognito did nothing wrong. Behavior of this sort can't be condoned and if you do then you are no better than they are. Speaking in support of their friend in a time of trouble but they need to also address the abuse. They live in a fantasy world. Their immaturity is showing through but that does really surprise me, especially considering the content of some of the message on this forum.

This entire situation is painful for everyone. This isn't about right or wrong anymore, it's about the MEDIA BLITZ on this ridiculous story and it influencing those who decide to believe the MEDIA before all facts are presented by the NFL.

Ok if Ritchie Incognito a guy who should be praised for reforming and make himself better in many ways and a Pro Bowl caliber player on a horrible offensive line, gets kicked off this team for following orders, there is not way that Philbin and Ireland should survive. They are more culpable. The best way out of this is for Martin to come back and be a man, bring Ritchie back, and lets make a playoff run. This sucks.

ESPN came in their pants when this story broke, they love to put down the Phins.

Like I had said in another post, locker room life is something the normal everyday person would not understand. You can see it here with some of the comments. If the guys on this team thought RI was racist don't you think they would have done something about it? You think the whole team is scared of RI? Please, I don't think so. This has nothing to do with race, It has nothing to do (in my opinion)with bullying. Martin was the weak link, and the weak link is always sorted out, typically they quit on their own. whether you approve or disapprove, that's the way it is.

Looks like I got a new fan....

My bad...

and old fan...with a few new names...

This is essentially what I was saying. At least partly. No wonder Kris got all upset. I'm guessing he's a black guy, more like Martin than a 'real' black guy. Maybe he just digs on black chicks. Whatever the reason the video shows Richie saying N..ggA, which is a huge distinction from N..gg.R! Either way if his black teammates present and past have no issue with it, why should the collective you?

I'm sorry but the more I read about Incognito/Martin the more I think Incognito is taking the fall for others. Almost to a man the locker room has had nothing negative to say about Incognito. They like him and consider him a good teammate. On the other hand it seems when Martin's name is brought up he gets the fish eye. Martin is no saint in this occurrence.

Well I was just blocked by Jason Whitlock on Twitter for saying the issues are more about class than race. I guess if you don't immediately buy into media driven race baiting spin you're not worthy of voicing an opinion.

The fact is these players know each other well. If Incignito is a racist they'd know. Martin is from a 3 generation line of Black Harvard educated lawyers, went to affluent schools in Cali and went to Stanford. Most of the players come from simpler backgrounds. I dare say Incognito hung around more Black people during any year in high school than Martin has his whole life. Of course the Black players would bond more with him as opposed to Martin.

Black people aren't a monolith we come from different backgrounds and sometimes those backgrounds are just as difficult to reconcile among Blacks as it is to reconcile between Whites & Blacks. I'm glad the Black players aren't standing behind Incognito they are the definition of manly honor in these trying times.

hey fan...

and by the way...JACK...i'm not IRRELEVANT to you....as evidenced by you responding to ALL of my post...

Edit 1:29 "aren't" should be "are".

Oh Cogs play has dropped way off and he has been sucking arse since mid last season...doesn't mean he should be JMart sacrificial lamb cuz he couldnt hack it in the league and needed a covered out...now that's a joke...

You guys need to stop watching ESPN - all those idiots are trying to connect dots that aren't there. Now, they think that the coaches told Richie to call Martin and call him the N-word. I find that hard to believe. I just don't watch it. There was a player named Leonard Little that killed a mother in a car when he was drunk-it was covered for one day and he played the next week. Ben Rapelisberger raped TWO girls and he got a short suspension - read that again - RAPED TWO GIRLS (one in Vegas and one in NC) - that WR for the Patriots or Redskins (forget his name) killed someone driving drunk - he played again. We have some hazing and name calling to try and get a player to give a sh*t and its like the worst thing that ever happened. Also, I wonder if Joe Philbin checks all the players voice mail messages for them - is he a coach or a secretary? ESPN is the worst.

But ahh...what should I expect from a couple of DBAGs from NoVA...not much...is the answer...

Well bro...youv've been posting like a real CK-smoker over the past month so I fnid it neccessary to try to enlighten you to this "personality disorder"...

Now Pouncey tells Chris Carter that Martin wanted to quit before all this happened. Does anyone with half a brain still think Martin didn't have an agenda?

Holding on to that voice mail was his way of ensuring he could get out without having to admit he couldn't cut it.

What a selfish baby Martin looks like. And taking Cogs down with him & embarrassing the franchise in the process.

Cut his as* now. He'll be free to get all the help he needs to cure his "illness".

Is there a treatment facility anywhere in the world that can make you less of a baby?

If so, that's where Martin is located & some of the bloggers here should get some brochures on!

Look...I don't care if Martin is from Compton or if he want to Stanford. All I care about is his abilityt o protect the QB and open holes for the RB's. I really think that is what the coaching staff cares about as well.

This particular coaching staff has been very clear that they prefer to work with 'high character guys.' They don't care about their race. But I can see the coaches liking Martin for having been a Stanford grad.

So, I am pretty sure IF the coaches asked Cogs to help 'toughen up' Martin it wasn't because he was from Standford. I think it's because he wasn't physical enough and maybe was struggling mentally with the pressure of being an NFL starter.

I really DESPISE the media for blowing up situations in into national stories before all the facts are fully understood and before those facts are digested in realistic context.

This is just so pathetic.

Surprised by the support in the locker room? Why? Being surprised means you have drawn your own conclusion independent of people that are actually close to the situation. The players in the locker room. Everyone is calling Incognito a racist etc. Yet the people that know him say, "Not true". So what other evidence is there that proves otherwise? There is none. This is nuts.

another white dude who thinks he is qualified to speak on people's blackness...as if there eer were such a thing...another stereo type with no basis in reality...

I have seen many blacks, Hispanics and whites all use the "N" word. Blacks use it on themselves all the time. I have seen white kids use it as if they are from the hood. The "N" word has become slang and not always a sign of racism. No doubt in that locker room (and locker rooms across the league) there are plenty of people that use that word in a different context. These guys are part of a locker room culture that uses that word a lot! Some stay away from it, and some become a part of it.

Anybody knows what Ricky William's conclusion was about this whole matter in his published statement? If you do, please let me know as I'm not sure what it was he tried to say.

Clayton Bigsby would be that black white supremicist.

Man, Chappelle was the sketch comedy god!!!

Racist or prejudiced not an issue if you're stupid enough to leave it on voicemail. End of NFL for Ritchie...bye,bye and good riddance!

The fact that news is now leaking that the coaches and/or management told RI to make that call and to toughen up Martin is beautiful……

Let's pull the pin out of this grenade and see what ha…….Oh shi...ITS ALL THE GRENADES FAULT!!

Football is black dominated? Somebody better pass the word to Belicheck and the Pats or heck even the Broncos offense...

One aspect of this that pisses me off no matter who is right or wrong...is that Cogs is at home right now and probably really wants to be with his team and to get out there and play...all Martin wants to do is sit at home and cry into his pillow...he doesn't give a damn about his team or his team mates...cuz he never wanted to be a part of either...

Incognito needs to be taken back. Martin is gonna sue for around 17 million. More then he would ever make as a LT or RT in the N.F.L. !!! Ireland down to strength and conditioning coaches need to be be released and not awarded another year because of this fiasco. The stadium is empty everyone!!!!! Ross is a new owner. He needs proven office and coaching backgrounds. They dont have to be the best. Just sturdy. Our next G.M. needs to be a can't miss. Show Polian the $$$$' !!! Quit getting trash from Dallas. Check out there O line. And we're getting players from there practice squad!??

Is Incognito's penis considered black in the locker room? Maybe we can ask Beasley or Omar to answer that question for us

I'm not black, not white either or Asian .. thought I'd throw that out there...

If you don't act and talk like a dumb fool you are not down with them homey. This is why Ricky Williams was not popular as well. If you are dark skinned and conduct yourself like a civil human being you are looked down upon by your own.

It is called insecurity. They see one of their own that has raised the bar and instead of admiring him they condemn him because he makes manifest, without intending to do so, their own ineptitude.

Loud and emotional = good
Cussing and dirty talk = good

Civility and restraint = bad

If you manifest your stupidity you are considered down-to-earth (and black now? - despite your skin coler?).

If you keep to yourself and don't break your arm patting yourself on the back or strain a muscle celebrating an average play you are stuck-up (and I guess also white despite you skin color)

Some pretty bright People around this Team as we suspected and now know for a fact. If you're to believe what you read in this matter of assigning Incognito to toughen up Martin, it can only be a stroke of genius in this Era of Social media to have left that cute voice mail and those delightful text messages. Genius, I tell you...

You French Candian Mark...thats a sub-species of Moose right???

Now that's racists comments...

Fire all of them not for incompetents but for Dumb!

Football is black dominated? Somebody better pass the word to Belicheck and the Pats or heck even the Broncos offense...

Guess you haven't been paying attention. Even THOSE TEAMS are black dominated. The percentage is something like 70-30. But white people don't "see race." YEAH RIGHT!

I'm shocked you haven't heard from good ole Rev. Al & Jessie Jackson. Cases like this usually have them foaming at the mouth!
