Sage Rosenfels: Ireland 'worst GM'

First the ProFootballTalk story that implicates Jeff Ireland as having knowledge of Jonathan Martin's complaints that Richie Incognito was making his life difficult. And now a former Dolphins player is taking to twitter gutting the Dolphins general manager with his words.

Sage Rosenfels played for the Dolphins from 2002 to 2005 and then for a short time in 2011. And during that second stint he acquired a distaste for Ireland.

"I played for 5 teams and 9 GMs and Ireland is the only 1 I had a problem with," Rosenfels tweeted today. "I only spent two weeks on the Dolphins when Ireland was the GM. In that short time he won the award for worst GM in my career."

Then, on twitter, Rosenfels added a hashtag -- #jerk

And then, in the context of the Incognito-Martin scandal on his mind, Rosenfels went on to describe his problem:

"My reasons for my disdain for Ireland are a long story. It took about an hour to find out what everyone in that locker room thought of him. Two months after being put on Non Football Injury list with mono, I had gotten healthy and wanted to play. He wouldn't let me off NFI.....because the Dolphins played the Raiders that week and he didn't want them to sign me as I knew the Phins offense. Makes sense except...the Raiders were the only NFL team that had 4 QBs on their roster. He waited until late Friday to release me figuring nobody would....sign me that late in the week. Luckily, the Vikings cut McNabb and signed me that night. There is more but that is the basics of it.

"I understand GMs always put their teams first. I respect that. But he was being a jerk just because he could. That's why he won the award. Everyone gets screwed over at some point in their career. It's the business. But there is story after story that has the same ring to it."

Rosenfels, obviously believing the ProFootballTalk story on Ireland, also said: "I have no reason to help out either side. I hope it ends sooner than later. Just giving my two cents. The whole situation is a tragedy."

Actually, Rosenfels was represented during his playing days by agent Rick Smith. And Smith is one of the agents representing Martin.

So I reached out to Rosenfels and asked him to address that apparent bias.

"I haven't even talked to Rick," he told me. "I'd say the same thing if IMG or Dave Dunn represented Martin. Or if Rick represented Richie."

Obviously, this is a sad story for the entire Dolphins organization. Players in the locker room are expressing their opinions and they solidly back Incognito. Players around the league are expressing their opinions and they're ripping the entire Dolphins organization and its leadership structure.

And today two former Dolphins -- Lydon Murtha and Rosenfels -- are sharing their thoughts. And neither is too impressed with Ireland or the Dolphins coaching staff.

best thing that current/past players, coaches, GMS can do.....is just keep it real--no spin, no bias, no worrying about where you get your paycheck from these days.....dont forget what its like in that locker room, and be humble....admit that its a jungle in there, for the most part....and that this game is played by violent, aggressive, angry men....and that you actively seek them out when putting together a roster--enough of the "wouldnt happen on my watch"--I'm sure it did to some degree, Herm Edwards, Bill Polian, etc

Posted by: Mark in Toronto | November 07, 2013 at 12:04 PM

The same game you watch is the the one which has brought us such outstanding citizens as Aaron H, Plaxico B, Pac Man J, Ray L, Chad O and a very looooong list of thugs. And guess what, this same tough macho mentality that you want in the locker room is the same mentality that makes certain that this guys keep doing what they're doing. They're is no accountability on and off the field. It's absolutely moronic that you can translate a tough sport with carte a la blanche to create a hostile work environment, where extreme hazing and bullying is permitted and serves to toughen up 'men'

You probably also think that Goodell is 'softening' the sport with all the safety rules but at the same time support those tough players who are now drooling out of their mouths and demanding the league to take care for them with their concussions and other related injuries. Can't have it both ways.

In the case of Martin, I ask you exactly what is your idea of being a man? Talking about it? You don't know if he did and then again, talking to whom? The council led by people who clearly are in Incognito's side? The GM who basically ignored an earlier call on the matter? Or the coach who seems clueless about what was going on in the locker room? Should he punch Incognito? What good would that do with someone as unstable as Incognito? And then again, if you did that in the field it earns you a flag, ejection and a suspension from the league. Why would that be any different from off the field?

benz,stop pixing fights

ANd what if he made this all up Mr. Arturo? Ever heard of cry wolf?

Again FYI, do you know the legal threshold for what constitutes a threat?
The "victim" has to actually beleive the aggressor would actually carry out harm.

This has been shown to eb the furthest thing possible ... unless you only read ESPN.

This whole story is hogwash

For those that say 'only the players in the locker room matter' --- normally I would totally agree. But, in this instance, they don't really count. Actually, 20 of them are new this year. Typically, there is similar turnover every year. They are tiny, tiny footnotes in this monster story.

They can't slow down or change the direction of the Avalanche. It's gathering momentum and has taken on a life of its own. Nothing to gain by getting in its way.

Ultimately, coaches and probably Ireland are going to get fired. They KNOW that now. They are looking after themselves at this point. Players should too. After all this jaw-boning and push back against the media conglomerate, if they lose on Monday, look for the media to really give them (and Dolphins overall) an extra smack. The smart ones, or ones with smart agents will do like Tim Bowens did his entire career: NO Fing COMMENT. I do my talking on the field.

Posted by: benz | November 07, 2013 at 12:21 PM

No no no...you got it all wrong benz-o...it's more like...dont worry about how I spell my handle, Jack!...

or...someone tries to bully me and they will be picking their teeth up off the ground...and thats a fact, Jack!

Can you see clearly now???

My problem is with Ireland telling Martins agent to do it. YOU CANT DO THAT IF YOU ARE THE GM!

Are you REALLY gonna sit there & tell me you can't see the difference?

Posted by: JUST FYI | November 07, 2013 at 12:04 PM

I have to agree with you here...

While I think it's kinda cool (if) Ireland said it, as the GM, you have to realize you are talking to the man who legally represents Martin.

I don't believe that Cogs is a "good guy" by any stretch of the imagination. However I am now questioning Martins motives. Martin was not happy with the move back to RT. Martin was not a fan of Cogs.....saving text and voice mails tells me something else was at work here. Martin is a West Coast guy....is this his way back home?? Is he trying to get to the 49ers or Chargers??? He knows he is most likely done with the Dolphins as soon as he walked out?? There is more to this story!

Posted by: Bill Arnsparger | November 05, 2013 at 07:33 PM

Why are we hearing from former bench players instead of listening to the current starters who are in the locker room and actually were around when the situation occured?

This story, for that reason, is absurd.

But I do believe Ireland is unliked by most players and do not want him managing this team any longer. There are too many stories from players who say they hate this guy. It can only hurt the team, Ireland must be removed at seasons end.

jax, what if dey r hillbillies and don't have teef,
what then?

78, u ain't remember down 28 zip to the bills and sage came in and won the game in the 2nd half seasons ago huh?

FYI....did you read my earlier post about the best selling video games?--all hideously and embarrassingly violent and graphic....and listen to the music that is very popular today, and/or watch those videos---ie. its not just an NFL issue....its across our society--dont you understand that?--how else to explain that the most popular video games are all nasty/violent games?

Phins78...my point exactly...we are in total agreement once again. Ireland must go regardless of how this turns out. He has EARNED his way out through his very own actions!

Arturo, there were so many avenues he could've used to address this. Again, every company employs outside thrid party counsel to discuss workplace issues. There was management, coaches, fellow players, HR department, blah, blah, blah, blah, balh.

but at every turn, it appears nobdoy was aware of this until it blew up which co-incidentally was at the same time he lsot his job and was asked to play a position he's gone on record as not enjoying.

See through the BS, Arturo!!

ahhh yes, I do now see clearly Jack!!.....Jackie!.....Jack-O-Lantern!--got it....just poking a little fun there, Jack!--wont worry about it anymore (wasnt that worried, dude)-OK!

Wallace only had an offer from the Vikings that was less than ours.

Bill in the interest of being fair the Steelers offered Wallace a bunch of money too. I think it was a few million less than the dolphins total offer

I say we all get a TACO and LOBSTERTUBE!

Here is Bill A- hole comes around once again with his point of the day.

You blame Ireland for the fact FA won't come here but thats not true.

1. Brandon Marshall
2. Reggie Bush
3. Mike Wallace
4. Carlos Dansby
5. Brent Grimes

These guys were some of the most sought after in their respective Free Agency periods.

You continually talk rubbish my friend, but its great to have to chime in now and then. Most of the true bloogers can't stand your puerile comments.

Pathetic Tiny Bill. Now call me lil Marco.... LOL.

They are the most awesome games man...anyone that can not disconnect between a video game and real life should be executed and burned...it's time to get our population under control and take out some of these Tardos in the process...

From the Boston Herald

The Dolphins are 4-4 and one game out in the race for an AFC wild card after an overtime win last Thursday night against the Cincinnati Bengalls, but they are done. Incognito, a nobody offensive lineman, effectively killed their season. You don’t think character matters? How about lack thereof? How about having a creep like Incognito as one of the veteran voices in your locker room? You can’t measure the destruction this one bad apple caused, but you can see it. You can feel it. It is fatal. Martin had reached his breaking point. He could not take the harassment from Incognito any longer. Now Martin is 6-foot-5 and 312 pounds, so immediately the Twitter tough guys demanded to know why he didn’t take matters into his own hands. On ESPN, Merril Hoge said Martin could have ended it if he just grabbed Incognito by the throat in the middle of the locker room. We all would have applauded if Martin shoved Incognito’s face into the garbage disposal, but is that really part of the job?Should a player have to fight his own teammate — a teammate who was once voted dirtiest player in the NFL — just to make it through the day? What is this, Shawshank?Martin is a Stanford grad from a well-to-do family who just wants to play professional football. Unfortunately, he was drafted by a team that empowered a lowlife like Incognito, which meant Martin had to line up next to a guy who told him he wanted to defecate in Martin’s mouth. Incognito also uttered an ethnic slur to Martin, who is biracial, and threatened to kill his family. He said he wanted to slap Martin’s mother across the face. He allegedly coerced Martin into handing over $15,000 for a trip to Vegas that Martin didn’t even attend. We all know the NFL is full of crazy men, but is Martin supposed to let that roll off his back? Incognito is not only a punk and a bully, but he also is a moron. He left some of the more vile threats on Martin’s voice mail. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the evidence is overwhelming. Incognito is done with the Dolphins and probably every other NFL team. He’d have to be a great player to survive this, and he is not. He is just a guy — a really bad guy.Scott Pioli, former Pats executive now with NBC, said New England did not even consider taking Incognito when he was coming out of college. Incognito ended up at Oregon after he was kicked out of Nebraska, not an easy thing to do. Tony Dungy said the Colts had Incognito on their “DNDC List” — meaning Do Not Draft for Character reasons. The Rams took him in the third round in 2005. Miami signed him in 2010 and he has started all but one game at left guard since.“I didn’t want him coming out and I don’t want him now,” said Pioli on NBC Sunday night. “If he’s a leader in your locker room, then that’s a problem.”Every NFL team has its share of bad guys, including Dungy’s Colts and Bill Belichick’s Patriots, but the Dolphins made a fatal mistake with Incognito. They made him a leader. Head coach Joe Philbin either knew what Incognito was doing or he should have known. He allowed one very bad apple to spoil the locker room, and now the team pays the price. The Dolphins are one game out of the wild card, but they’re done, killed off by a selfish, ignorant bully .

Bill A is Phins 78. Children of Rush Limbaugh !!!

Jack...."anyone that can not disconnect between a video game and real life should be executed and burned"....oohhh, ok, now you're getting a little creepy Jack---"executed and burned", huh?--are you sure you're "disconnecting"?

National media calling you out is the exact slap to the face of the players needed re: Questioning the leadership and locker room. Loved T-hill and Hartlines responses.

Got a feeling this is going to motivate and unite rather than divide. Could care a less what happens to Ireland at this juncture as both him and Philbin are gone if we don’t make playoffs. Would be suprised if ross moved on firing anyone untill investigation is done.

There is a great article on Si.com that Mando referenced earlier. You need to read it, after reading everything I am siding with Richie and think Martin needs to go.

Posted by: benz | November 07, 2013 at 12:34 PM

And I was poking fun back...that's what I do 75% of the time anyway...talk shyt that I personally think is hilarious...those who don't...well...I dont care enough to consider it...

LeCambre: F'it. Let the ones that want to talk, talk. I think Hartline went too far and seemed to contradict himself but he seemed sincere. But, Brandon Marshall and Ricky Williams, of all people, have weighed in. Few have Tim Bowens' personality.

True, they'd BETTER win or the poking and pushing stops and the whole BOOT goes on the neck.

ANd what if he made this all up Mr. Arturo? Ever heard of cry wolf?

Posted by: drsamii | November 07, 2013 at 12:28 PM

It would mean that he probably has a mental illness that should be treated. It means that as any other place of work you identify this and deal with it correctly. You don't discriminate or harrass someone from being 'half-black', introvert or privileged.

Yes 78 I know that. They didn't really want Wallace that was the reason for the poor offer....says a lot about a player when the team he has been playing on doesn't want him?? They even put it out there before he signed that he was a "1 trick pony" hmmmm?? Yet Ireland gave him $60million and tied our hands for at least 3 yrs in regards to Wallace.

cam wake d playa of the week

Jack....got it...hard to tell here sometimes.

Posted by: benz | November 07, 2013 at 12:38 PM

HAHAHAH!!! Good point...BUT really...waaayyy too many people walking around in this planet...I'm just looking for solutions...is it the Final Solution??? oohhhh nooo...maybe I just went to far...

If the Dolphins win on Monday, this saga will start to slide big time.

Win and go 6-4 and we really begin to change gears. Its not the end of the world.

I think this issue may bring the team closer together than ever. The Dolphins are now fight ing the world, its a great way to build unity through adversity.

ANd what if he made this all up Mr. Arturo? Ever heard of cry wolf?

Posted by: drsamii | November 07, 2013 at 12:28 PM

s the funny thing about what Arturo and his extreme minority cronies don't get.

He keeps referring to all of these wrongdoings but here are the facts that we know.

1.Two players are involved in an incident.
2. Neither of the players has spoken about the incident.
3. The alleged victims agent has filed a complaint.
4. There is one voicemail that they are using as evidence of the alleged bullying.

By the way, the voicemail they are using isn't complete because it doesn't fit the national objective of painting Incognito as a villain. The last line in the voicemail that the media has conveniently left out was Incognito in a softened more serious tone saying, "okay, call me back man".

I have to agree with you here...

While I think it's kinda cool (if) Ireland said it, as the GM, you have to realize you are talking to the man who legally represents Martin.

Posted by: The Signal | November 07, 2013 at 12:29 PM

I agree with Irelands mind set as well "if" he said it. But, he's the friggin GM representing the franchise, 100's of employees, players, coaches etc. As a man saying it, it's fine. As a GM, AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HE HAS TO BE SMARTER THAN THAT! I hope he is! But, make no mistake, Ross is no dumbo. He didn't get rich by accident. He treats the fins as a business. IF it comes out that Ireland did say that & stains the orginization?

There is absolutely no chance he survives. None, zip, zilch, nada! And he shouldn't!

And if the certain meatheads on this blog represent a large segment of the population, society as a whole is shot.

Just because it's a violentGAME/SPORT, does not mean violence or the threat of violence should be recommended as a means to solve a dispute. You gotta be f-in kidding me!

marco, jax! says it is the end

People hate Ireland for his demeanor. He's arrogant and talks down to players and you only have to watch Hard Knocks again to get proof of that, and that's him on his best behavior knowing there are cameras there.

He's also terrible at his job. He doesn't know how to draft, he doesn't understand the dynamics of building a team, and the Dolphins record since he's been here is all you need to look at as proof.

Also, why the f are people here still defending him?

The Jets fans are hysterical over this whirlwind.

So this whole thing blew up because someone got a hold of the fact that Martin stormed out of the cafeteria. It was not him going to the press and telling the story.
Second, if the guy is committed in the hospital then there is something more serious with him and that is why he hasn't shown his face yet.
Third, like you say all companies have comittees that deal with this. Normall, it's HR or indpendent ethics committe. How is this different from going to the NFl or nfLPA? Obviously it cannot be within the dolhins organization because that's who your grievance is against. you need and independent party

Posted by: Marco | November 07, 2013 at 12:36 PM

uh, the top 2 on your list weren't free agents.

re: Boston Herald....ok, yeah, we all get that Richie was a degenerate, bad dude.....his teammates loved him, we dont get that, but I still think their opinion matters and ours doesnt/shouldnt--whatever--the reality is that he wont be back with this team, maybe wont play again, but likely wouldnt have been back anyway, because his contract ends--maybe he shouldnt have been a leader on the team....blah, blah, blah....aint perfect, mistakes made in retrospect, but similar issues are in every locker room, in some form--if we didnt make the playoffs, Philbin and Ireland couldve been gone anyway....so fine, fire them and start fresh....and we'll rebuild for another 5 years.

but alot of the pundits/fans should stop expecting the NFL culture/locker room to look like normal people's culture (it doesnt, shouldnt and wont)---and stop acting like similar issues dont exist in most/all other NFL locker rooms, in one form or another--they do....I know, they know it.....and if they say they dont, they're kidding themselves

George Harrison once stated, "All Thing Must Pass", and so will this. Its great copy, racism, bullying and secret codes.... maybe James Bond will get involved. Its a hokum folks.

I got into a bit too. At the end of the day Im a Miami Dolphins fan.

Go Miami !!!

I have had to put Marco/Daytona in his place before. Guess I will post 1, yes 1, answer to shut her up once and for all! Don't you hate facts...Marco/Daytona?

1. Brandon Marshall......head case that nobody wanted
2. Reggie Bush.....he was not the star N.O. drafted #2
3. Mike Wallace..."1 trick pony" only 2 teams bid for
4. Carlos Dansby...please child??
5. Brent Grimes...damaged goods no bonifide offers

These guys were some of the most sought after in their respective Free Agency periods
Posted by: Marco | November 07, 2013 at 12:36 PM

You will not be answered again. Your just a little 12 or 13yo boy who knows nothing.

There are signs of a coverup by the Fins. This is a combo of Watergate and A Few Good Men.

Everyone has their own opinion on this issue. It's hard to know which facts are not being blown out of proportion at this time. The NFL loves to bash the Dolphins, so we already know that "bully-gate" is going to be considered worse than "Bounty-Gate", even though it shouldn't. Incognito is a jerk... Okay, we already knew that. Jeff Ireland is a heartless prick... Okay, we already knew that. What is this story actually about? It's about how much the NFL hates the Miami Dolphins.

FYI is an assshole.

Reggie Bush and Karlos Dansby are having monster seasons. Both have to be thrilled they arent part of the Dolphin perpetual circus.

I tink guys like you are pissed because the dirty laundry is now public knowledge. That is not Martin's fault but rather the times we live in...This is just another piece of a very disfunctional organization.
I won't make Martin a scapegoat of our woes. You call him a PoS player but to me the last two years it was Jake Long allowing the sacks from the left, Columbo and now Clabo sucking big time on the right and incognito missing blocks and assignments as well. I see bad playcalling, rookie mistakes from our QB (like holding to the ball too long) and rb's who cannot block blitzes. So with all the frustration is easy to say the Martin sucked as a player without looking at stats or tape.
Na dto this mess, like I said before. With a strong GM, coach and vets this shyte never happens and guys like Martin could be playing and growing in the league

Posted by: LOL | November 07, 2013 at 12:45 PM

2 Watt a lot of dummies come on here and post non facts and lies and think that wins there argument. This dummy told us all last week that Mike Holmgren was the coach of the Chiefs. She actually argued with me about it for a long time before I exposed her!!

Posted by: 2 watt | November 07, 2013 at 12:32 PM

I remember he came in off the bench :)

It was 23-0, Chambers was the hero, Rosenfels went right back to the bench. And then he played one more game where he had to come in because Frerotte was injury prone with concussions, Jets maybe? We won that game too.

I believe him about the Ireland thing because many other players have voiced the same opnion. But when it comes to what is going on in the locker room he knows as much as we do.

hey Arnsparger how about you name all the free agents that din't sign with the Dolphins. And if you consider Jeff Fisher a great coach then that's all we need to hear abot your footbal IQ... Zero...

So Ireland is an awful GM because he did not care that his 4th string QB might had a better chance to sign with another team risking that the Raiders throw out one of their 4 QBs, sign him and he reveals stuff?? You would have been the first to blame Ireland for being so stupid. Ireland is not a great GM, but this is getting to a ridiculous point. I could not care less what Rosenfels said.
It is great that the media rides the whole thing about Martin forcing Ireland and Philbin to bench Icognito. And then you write about that they lose the team because they benched Icognito.

I have worked in corporate Americe for 25 years. I have seen so many employees putting in fradulant claims of harrassment, work stress disorders, etc.

I think many people suffer from mental illness or are unable to handle 'stress' or feel compelled to hide their sexuality. There a many 'issues' people contend with personally and struggle to manage work / life balance.

Some of those people manage it really poorly and it leads to such fraudulent claims. It's an easy way to deflect the root issue which is they are personally struggling...of course it has to be someone else's fault.

This is what I see here with Martin. It seems very strange that about every Dolphins player has stepped forward stating the locker room was not an evil place to work, that Cogs and Martin had a normal relationship as OLINE teammates, that Martin 'seemed fine' up until his melt down. It seems very strange that he kept messaages for months. It seems strange that he runs immediately to a health clinic, files a union greevance and then lawyers up.

In fact it doesn't sound strange at all....it happens every day in corporate America!

Most of the true bloogers can't stand your puerile comments.

Marco, take it for what it's worth but the last guy who constantly spoke for the other bloggers he didn't know was hated by this entire forum. Not trying to be mean, I just want to point out that I (not speaking for anyone else) do not like when people use me in their post to attack another Dolphin fan.

regis should take the team up to tampa on sat. to get away from all of this
