« Could Martin return to the locker room? Not likely | Main | Dolphins America's team: For wrong reasons »

Statement from Jonathan Martin attorney here

Jonathan Martin's family this week hired sports attorney David Cornwell to represent the Dolphins offensive lineman. On Thursday evening Cornwell released the following statement:

Jonathan Martin’s toughness is not at issue. Jonathan has started every game with the Miami Dolphins since he was drafted in 2012. At Stanford, he was the anchor for Jim Harbaugh’s “smash mouth” brand of football and he protected Andrew Luck's blind side.

"The issue is Jonathan’s treatment by his teammates. Jonathan endured harassment that went far beyond the traditional locker room hazing.  For the entire season-and-a-half that he was with the Dolphins, he attempted to befriend the same teammates who subjected him to the abuse with the hope that doing so would end the harassment.  This is a textbook reaction of victims of bullying.  Despite these efforts, the taunting continued.  Beyond the well-publicized voice mail with its racial epithet, Jonathan endured a malicious physical attack on him by a teammate, and daily vulgar comments such as the quote

"These facts are not in dispute.

"Eventually, Jonathan made a difficult choice. Despite his love for football, Jonathan left the Dolphins. Jonathan looks forward to getting back to playing football. In the meantime, he will cooperate fully with the NFL investigation.

"Quote from teammate: “We are going to run train on your sister. . . . She loves me. I am going to (expletive) her without a condom and (expletive) in her (expletive).”

I've heard talk of mental illness but it really may apply to BOTH players.

The NFL is under attack from every possible direction. Murder, coverups, and the like. This is a bad day to be a fan of this sport. CNN is ripping us, NFL network, and ESPN, not to mention several other prominent news agencies across the country. I don't believe this will end well for anyone with even a remote amount of authority on this franchise up to and including the ownership.

This could be the end of the game as we know it and very likely could be the end of the Dolphin franchise as we know it. We are now considered the pariahs of the league. It seems that more and more accusations of inappropriate behavior is hitting the wires daily.

Ross and his minority owners have to be under a great deal of pressure and I do believe it would be prudent if they simply put the franchise on the market and get it out of south Florida. As far as the players go, I still believe they will come out Monday night snorting fire and take down the Bucs in epic fashion.

Mr. Not Funny, your humor is rivaled only by 4th graders. Most 34 year old woman are still strong enough to beat you senseless and send you back home to your boyfriend crying like a toddler.

But, hey! Keep up your tough guy charade dismissing everything cogs does. Makes you look like a real winner!

Shows you to be a real worthy citizen of planet earth.

This whole fiasco has been more entertaining than any product they have fielded in almost 20 years.

"Bullying" in the NFL. This is the stuff comics live for.

Ha! Marc, you're missing out. Now that the NFL continues it's wussiffication process, hockey seems likely to be the last sport on the planet that men can go play.

Dingaling in Toronto thinks it's funny & ok to assault women in public.

The filth in Canada I tell ya!

OBVIOUSLY, I am counting on your vote when I run for Mayor, thank you!!

(Blowing kisses to you Richie Incognito style)

HAHA. This guy sayd your humor rivals a 4th grader and then calls you a dingaling! Classic!

Boxing is still around. That semi-gaaay UFC is hurting ratings though.

WPF, I guarantee you this will do well for the popularity of the team in the long run. Kids will all want to wear our logo. Sure didn't do the Raiders any harm back in the day...

Marc, this clown can't even post in the anonymity of a blog with a regular sign in name ... like I'm going to take offense.

Just come here, OBVIOUSLY, I will treat you good!!!

Old school blogger,

You're talking a lot of SHYTE At 8:52 am. But I know you already know this. You come here just to try and get under people's skin. It's not working. Ever think maybe its about YOU? I have no problem with the vast majority of posters here. They have no problem with me. Can you say the same? HIGHLY doubt it, since you change your name all the time.

See the truth of the matter is you're not here to talk football......you're here to try and pick fights. This is what your life is about. You're fromthe JonathanMartin school of life. Here to cause problems with others, with an agenda. Sensitive and can't hack it in life.

And YES.....I'm telling you you're WRONG.

Richie "Babyface Bully That will be his name in pro wrestling.

Don't be surprised if the league sanctions the team for behavior unbecoming of an NFL franchise. This is a major embarrassment to the league as a whole and will only get worse as more facts are revealed. I pity the leadership of this team if this ever makes it to open court.

By the way, hate UFC ... soooo boring.

Not enough good boxers around... some American heavyweight needs to come around to make it viable again. Or maybe even a Canadian .. boxing still sold while Lennox Lewis was on top.

I think this whole ordeal makes the Dolphins cool. Don't care what the nerds at ESPN think.

There's been some good matches over the years, but, the biggest problem is that the 2 biggest promoters never come together. They could have HUGE fights and let them go because it's a pissing match, so they only promote their guys vs. their guys

We do need a heavyweight. Problem is, he's likely playing football as a teenager in America and not boxing.

You come here just to try and get under people's skin. It's not working.

Here Craigarrehea says it's not working and writes a diatribe about it proving it is working. LOL.

More proof Craig M is almost as dumb as Kris, but still a complete idiot.

Martin seems absolutely vindictive based on the timing of his actions right after he was moved to right tackle. He might have been the victim of bullying, but he needs to grow up. It's a tough world and he has it easy making all that money for playing a sport, so i do not feel bad for him. I would not welcome him back in my locker room...no way.

There is nothing funny about this, its actually very sad.

He was drunk. Can anyone here not named Kris say they've never done anything inappropriate while they were drunk? Nobody knows the circumstances.

Everyone just jumps to conclusions.

Posted by: Marc | November 08, 2013 at 09:50 AM

C'mon dude, being drunk isn't an excuse. Ask Mark about his Mayor (yeah, I smoked crack, but I was drunk). Doesn't make it right. Drunk drivers get convicted every day IN SPITE OF being drunk. Just because you're drunk doesn't make you any less liable. You put yourself in that position in the first place.

I've done plenty of messed up things when I was drunk. And I paid the price for each and every one (one way or another).

save your rants for those who care sally. whether you accept it or not, we know you never do, you are the biggest, loudest mouth there is.

this is not a good thing. maybe in Canada. but, hey, whatever makes you happy babygirl.

"He might have been a victim of bullying" in GRADE SCHOOL! The notion of bullying doesn't apply! It's a buzzword.

Marc, this has to be longest dry spell for American heavyweights in forever. Just looking at how crowded the heavyweight division was in the 1980s compared to now.

And the vintage stuff they sometimes show of the 1970s is nuts ... Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Norton ..

And YET another name....hilarious!

Have a good day fellas. I'll let this clown sit onhere again all day. Don't worry pal....the rest of us will work while you sit at home doing nothing.

Who cares about the crap Dolphins anymore?

DC, in Canada we let you keep your mayorship though, haha. Don't know how but it does seem like it is an excuse. Oh my, get caught smoking crack on video .. retort is "I was drunk" oh ok, carry on...

Who cares about basketball?? Not even Miami unless you have the best team ...

Martin accuses teammate of rubbing tip of penis between his buttcheeks SMH

Yeah. MarK. Consider Holyfield and Tyson were our last 2 greats it's been a while!

The Klitchco (sp?) brothers are ridiculous though. Like 6'6, 250. They've just beating the snot outta people for a decade. Even though Lewis almost killed one of them, HAHA

i am not tru b that.

but you always try to recruit fellow bloggers on your side. funny, no one else sees the need to do that.

only people who are disliked. NO ONE CARES

tru b that was right tho. you say you don't care but go on for paragraphs about it. your a walking contradiction.

go away & i'll tell you tomorrow how many ppl say they missed you today. here's a guess 0

They should put Incognito in the zoo with the other animals haha

Martin wishes a teammate rubbed the tip of his penis between his cheeks@!

Bullying and the whole team is called out and the NFL has a major investigation...its all over the news. I wonder if this happened to the NFLs beloved Patriots if it would get this much scrunity.

blabber M, i am at work. I get paid to sit here & ridicule the likes of you. i know that has to burn the as* of a peasant like you. slaving to make ends meet.

come back with a 3 paragraph tirade or don't bother!

njdolfan... thats silly Patriots players don't bully. They just take the high road, gang land killings and drunk driving murders.

Hahaha@10:37

Lewis was a great heavyweight and the only thing keeping him from being remembered as one of the all time greats is that he woudl be prone to the occasional let down against a guy far less talented than himself because he beleived in his own natural ability way too much. (i.e. Oliver McCall)

And yes he did handle the Kitsckos back in his day at a time when he was in his late 30s...

Too bad those Ukrainian boys are holding the division hostage. Only fight in Europe, weird times/places, etc.

CommonSense,
Exactly...funny how all the crap the Patriots do and it all gets swept under the rug and life goes on. Apparently Killing is not as big a deal as Bullying in a footballs locker room.

NJ, the pats housed a murderer and gangster for yearrs but nobody investigates their practices or locker rooms.

And if you believe the only reason hernandez went late was weed, you're drreaming. The circles he ran in before and after being drafted were not a secret to anybody. Yet this guy goes on committing crimes for years but we have a player who tells a teammate he wants to bang his sister and the whole world goes bezerk. Funny country down there...

And let's not forget they also took in Alfonzo Dennard who is no choir boy...

This is the height of embarrassment being a Dolphins' fan. This organization sucks. I wanted Ireland gone to begin with, but I want him gone now so this team gets a fresh start and a new face.

Best friends? Ever hear " keep your friends close and your enemies closer"? Bullies Always stick together just like a family. Mr. Martin went to Work to Work. He is entitled to the same workplace rules as the rest of us. Football is a business period. Now let it grow up!!!!!!

Lewis would have lost the one fight against Klitschko, but, his eye almost fell outta his head. He was getting rocked before that.

It's the QB MORONS, T3+outs is no leader.
He.s a pasty faced punk who is as clueless as you dumb out of touch out of town homers Eh?

Same workplace as us?! Wow. That's delusional. If Martin was genuinely upset and offended by anything they've said thus far then he simply isn't cut out for the culture of professional sports. THE END.

Nothing will help this team more than a win on Sunday. Then need to bottle this tornado up and unleash it on the Bucs. We by a big margin and the story will be minimized. Otherwise, you can add the unraveling of the season to the story.

I wouldn't count on winning. We still have RT at the helm. I'm sure Revis is licking his chops

The NFL has been mysteriously silent on the matter.

Yeah, the Phins will win this Sunday eh?

Mark in Toronto, Ross asked for the investigation so all would be objective....

Moreover down here away from Canada a person even though in the press seems to be guilty. He is not until convicted in a court of law. The prosecutor is going after Hernandez's girlfriend, friends etc....which may include the Dolphins Pouncey because much of the evidence is circumstantial, not enough to get a murder conviction 'down here'. So what prosecutors do is squeeze the friends or family for more evidence. They indicted the girlfriend of Hernandez

Henandez should hire Jose Baez. If not, that's pretty much an open and shut case. Text. Hey, let's meet up. Car pulls up with 3 guys, they drive to an abandoned work site and show up at the house carrying a gun minus a guy 10 minutes later...Gee, what happened?! HAHA

Lets not forget Ray Lewis and what he did yet he retired a hero. Apparently bullying is a major crime...worse than Murder.

Gotta admit though Mark, T3+outs is hilarious!

Daytona, they're playing Monday, but yeah, they will win, eh!

That's what I'm talkin aboot!

WPF, I guarantee you this will do well for the popularity of the team in the long run. Kids will all want to wear our logo. Sure didn't do the Raiders any harm back in the day...

Posted by: Mark in Toronto | November 08, 2013 at 10:22 AM

Yeah Mark I was a teenager during that era and yes I do agree that the bad boy image of the Raiders did get the attention, not so much good, but it did get attention. Fred Bilentnikoff retired and coached Orange Glen High School's wide receivers in Escondido Ca, and he lived just over the hill from us around the time I was finishing up my High School career and moving on to college. That being said things have changed in the past 30 years, attitudes have changed, culture has changed, but the NFL has not for the most part. Do I care if Martin was a wuss and couldn't deal with the every day grind of the pros? My answer is no..absolutely not. As a former player I would be labeled a major hypocrite if I said otherwise. Do I believe this action will damage the brand of the NFL? No, not likely, but it will cause the league to create scapegoats to take the spotlight off of the game, the league, and the brand, that I am quite sure of.

nj, glad you brought that up because John harbaugh is sounding off from the top of his soap box talking about how the Ravens don't tolerate hazing and initiation.

Where's the white suit, John???

Another clown going off about how they're better than others ... fawk off Harblow!!

They better Mark, or else you'll hear about this stuff until Xmas!

Linda, go watch "The Chew". I am sure the content is more appropriate for you. Little girls and Jonithan Martin do not belong in football.

WPF, no doubt Blondie will do something to show the league is the good guy in all of this. Same as they did in bountygate. Although if the league plans to suspend Ireland and/or Philbin for a year over this, I hope Ross has the good sens to take it one step further and fire them. I don't want a replay of the Saints 2012 rudderless season here...

DC, been hearing about it since 2007 on here and not one fukk has been given...
