Incognito: Racism, bad words 'what I regret most'

There's a saying that any man who serves as his own lawyer has a dummy as a client. Well, here's a new corollary to that and it's, if you're suspended from your $235,000 a week job because you are being accused of racism and the NFL is investigating you, it's probably not a great idea to go on national television.

Yet that is what Richie Incognito is doing today. He taped an interview with FOX on Saturday and portions of it will be aired starting at noon on the FOX pregame show.

And in that interview, Incognito admits he used racial epithets with teammate Jonathan Martin. And he tried to excuse himself for doing that in his best social scientist approach possible by saying that's just the way things are in the Dolphins locker room.

"All this stuff coming out, it speaks to the culture of our locker room, it speaks to the culture of our closeness, it speaks to the culture of our brotherhood," Incognito says in the interview.

"And the racism, the bad words," here it comes, "that's what I regret most, but that's a product of the environment and that's what we use all the time."

[Update: Incognito tells FOX he and Martin just communicated differently. He said the week before Martin left the team, the tackle left him a text message that read in part, "I will murder your whole (expletive) famil." "Now, did I believe Jonathan Martin was going to murder my entire family? No," Incognito said.]

The sound you hear is Incognito's career going down the tubes.

One way Incognito could emerge from this NFL investigation with a light sentence, so to speak, is if he can show that he was compelled to treat Martin as he did. In other words, if he was acting under orders. He declined to address that topic in the interview. Another way he can get off easier is if he can show that his employer knew of the treatment and did nothing, thus tacitly approving of his behavior.

But if Incognito's logic for calling his teammate a "half-n----r" as he did in that infamous voice message is that it's just the culture and the brotherhood and an alternate approach to communicating, then the roof is going to drop on him.

In a preview of the interview released by FOX, Incognito says of the scandal: "This isn't an issue about bullying. This is an issue about my and Jon's relationship."

Wonder if Martin would agree?

Incognito says what we already know when he encourages people to ask teammates who they believed had Martin's back most. "They'll undoubtedly tell you me," he said.

I've been told Incognito in the interview claimed he and Martin where friends. He expresses concern for his former teammate, particularly his health. Incognito talks of being surprised by the Dolphins suspending him.

Will there be a bombshell? I doubt it.

But tune in anyway.

Jonathan Martin is a hero for exposing the discrimination in the Dolphins organization. This will result in better working conditions for everyone throughout the Dolphin franchise and the entire NFL.

It's the QB MORONS eh?

London

Hm London eh?

It's being reported Jeff Ireland and philbin aren't expected to survive this

The rogue Phans like myself would fit right in with those hooligans across the pond eh?

Bla bla bla

But the English hate Ireland eh?

Enough already. Stick them both in a room with Dwight Stevenson (seems like a level headed, very smart guy) as a mediator. Let them talk it out and get it done. Martin gets to say his piece, Ritchie gets to say his. Maybe they end up with at least an understanding that they both can live with. If Cogs says to the locker room they he and Martin are good, they will settle it. If they can't reach common ground, then one, or both, need to go.

At least Ritchie is out there telling what he perceives as truth. He may be immature, even a lout, but he is being, at least from my perspective, open. Martin doesn't need to "man up" he just needs to act like a decent human being - which he is purported to be - and put his perspective out there. There are three sides to every story. In this one, there is Incognito's, Martin's and the truth. Hopefully, Wells gets to the truth and nobody is scapegoated. There is, of course, that fourth side... How could I forget? The media's. Trouble is, they think they are the third (the actual truth), but one minute it's Ritchie's fault, the next it's Martin's, the next it's coach, the next, it's Ireland, the next, it's the NFL, the next, it's the locker room culture... It's really everybody's fault. Just fix it. And that, to me, starts by putting these two guys in a room and getting their truths out to each other so they can come to an understanding. Even if it's to disagree. At least it will have been tried.

Sorry for the long post.

Matty, don't tease us eh?

matty, I'm surprised Ireland and Philbin havent resigned already.

If all what we say among friends were aired by the media, we would be all burned by the inquisition.
I understand what Incognito means, the problem here is that apparently he and mainly the staff, didnt realize when this dude-to-dude way of getting along crossed the line that led to Martin's breakdown.
In this current world full of electronic devices that may expose this "gentlemen" agreement of not disclosing what happens in private reunions, hangouts, parties, LOCKERROOMD,etc., one has to be extracautious since the hypocrital world were we live can condemn you for life.
Very likely Incognito is not a racist, how can it be if he has shared his football time with people with all kinds of DNA. He surely was teasing Martin all the time until he crossed that line and didnt realize. We must emphasize that Martin and Incognito have a quite different backgrounds, so maybe Martin was not used enough to the kind of low and dirt pranks that players coming from other slums were used to.
So this is an unfortuate affaire that I would put on the staff shoulders for their lack of awareness and control in the lockerrooms. Incognito will be the scapegoat of this nasty scandal and Philbin and mainly Ireland will come out clean at the end.

How can Armando be so shocked about this when he reads all the racist, hateful, bullying remarks left in this blog every story?
Cut the team some slack Armando, at least until we have all the facts. They have a season to finish as professionals and your not allowing them to do that. STOP being part of the problem Armando. The team has a MNF game to play.

DUUUUHHH No shyt Sherlock

The team has a MNF game to play.

The game is meaningless compared to the travesties going on in the franchise.

Everyone talks about the issue of racism. Guess what, it's not going away with the sissy culture that I keep hearing about. The places where I have seen the least racism is where guys can joke about their skin color and differences and doing it in a way that isn't meant with malice.
Four years in the military, we always took shots at each other. You know what, we all laughed it off and knew we had each others backs. High school football, 4 years and same thing. All of us our still friends that keep in touch. Law Enforcement Community, the same. We can talk about our differences and have fun. Then you come out of work and read articles like this. Racism will never be stomped out by political correctness. It will be stomped out by realizing we are different, we can talk about it and understand others views and yes, we can joke with each other without malice.

And the abusers come out from under their slime covered rocks to defend another abuser incognito style... easy to throw stones when no one knows its you doing the throwing scum bags. The bottom line: when a white guys abuses a black girl with a golf club, he gets a pass and a cover up, if a black guy had abused a white girl on that golf course you would all have your pitchforks and ropes out. Hypocritical, scum bag, abusers, the lot of you. Go back under your slimy rocks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I am surprised as well @ the level of the bloggers on here....they stop @ nothing to defend a cogs behavior....even make sick jokes about the SEXUAL ASSAULT.....but Mark in Toronto....is so offended when T.O....Chad Johnson....or heaven forbid....Brandon Marshal make the news for similar offenses....

We're is the morality police now.....

Certainly makes me wonder about the character of those I thought I knew a bit better....associating with many of you could be enough to get my TS pulled....

Jonathan Martin...and Richie Incognito have done us all a favor....the helped expose this fan base for what it really is....

It's no wonder we haven't won a playoff game in over a decade....and a SB in 40 years....

These fans don't deserve as much....

Daytona has been screaming it for months....about how bad these fans are....and about how they/we get the FO we deserve....

I couldn't stand him for saying it... But now that the ugly truth has been revealed....

It looks like he was right....and that may be the worst thing of all.....

How happy is Jake Long to have escaped this circus?

Here's a thought, Is it possible the Martin family being lawyers and such, came up with this plan with an endgame of suing Mr Ross for millions in a workplace lawsuit. Using a sad Jonathon as a poster boy to garner sympathy from the press and support groups seems like a perfect way to do this.
If there is any truth to this then the Dolphins brand is taking huge hits for nothing. Its more than likely that people will lose jobs and perhaps careers because the press is overreacting playing right into the Martins plans.

We're on the march for Philbin's army. We all go to Wemberley. And we realy shake 'm up when we hold that superbowl cup.........

Why don't you write something about football for a change?

Crap team = Crap fans

Oh and one more thing Mando, your comment.....

"There's a saying that any man who serves as his own lawyer has a dummy as a client. Well, here's a new corollary to that and it's, if you're suspended from your $235,000 a week job because you are being accused of racism and the NFL is investigating you, it's probably not a great idea to go on national television."

How many times have we seen the media critize people involved in a 'scandal' NOT defending themselves? The reality is, Dolphins mgmt. has cut Incog adrift. As for Incog speaking up, you're damned if you do, damned if you don't.

How can anyone still be a fan of this pathetic franchise?

What did the Martins talk about over the last 1 1/2 years?
Hi Son how was your day?
Not good Ma. The team doesnt like me and theyre making fun of me all the time.
Tell me whats happening and we will be the ones laughing in the end.
Honey, Jonathon is having problems with his team, I have a plan. Wanna hear it?

Cocoa joe, you are so right. Richie is at least coming out and has a right to defend himself. While Philbin and Ireland throw Richie under the bus, cover up what they did, and I'm not 100% sure but pretty close, LIED about the entire thing. The lie to me is worse then the supposed crime. A man admits what he did and apologizes and everyone moves on. A wuss lies and covers up.

This is the end of the madness

just the beginning marc, trust me

Just wondering, why your mom didn't have an abortion? Bring your idiotic comments elsewhere. People like you are the wusses I talk about. YOU are the closet racist and trolls that real men can't stand. Someone should punch you in your mouth, maybe then you would be a man instead of a little girl that you obviously are.

NFL insiders are reporting that Jeff Ireland AND Joe Philbin are not expected to survive the Martin/Cogs debacle.

I consider this to be good news as Philbin is a bad coach when it comes to adjustments and losing games in the 2 half. He also obviously has no clue about what transpires in his locker room. Even if he doesn't personally know, he should have someone working for him to get a pulse of the locker room.

As for Ireland, well his personnel choices are grounds were worthy of being fired a long time ago. Most around the league don't understand how Ireland still has a job. And as a fan, I'm also perplexed over this.

With more cap space & CRITICIAL draft picks, it's imperative that Ireland not be left to build the team again. It's time someone COMPOTENT steps in & handles it & restores respect & discipline into this franchise.

OHHH...Is this a football blog? Pfft. You wouldn't know it by the articles on this blog everyday. When's the last time we have one about the play on the field. I counted the last 10 have been about this same crap every freaking day. I'm going to quit and blame everyone else too.

I feel sorry for the people who spent money on tickets to this joke franchise.

But the English hate Ireland eh?

So do Fin fans!! LOL

The game is meaningless compared to the travesties going on in the franchise.

Posted by: Just Sayin' | November 10, 2013 at 11:38 AM

your wrong and obviously closed minded like Armando.

I dont advocate bullying but I also dont advocate blowing this story out of proportion. Just Sayin.

I still say Martin planned this mess from the get go. He held onto evidence damning to Cogs for months. He starts having issues at his position and gets flamed for it by the leader of the OL, then gets replaced by another player brought in off of the street without being told. He is just as much of a coward as I thought he was, cold, calculating, and smart. Don't forget that his mother is a corporate lawyer for Toyota and specializes in workplace disputes, that alone makes this entire mess smell up to high heaven. It is no wonder he hasn't spoken out since he left the team because he is a crazy like a fox. He is being manipulated by his parents and his current legal representative.

Don't hold your breath for a public speech from Martin about this mess, he is to smart for that. He knows he has the franchise by the proverbial balls right now and he will ride this drama fest for all its worth and in the end will end up smelling like a rose and having a pocket full of ill gotten money to boot.

What a total waste of time and effort by all parties involved and as for Martin he is a more of scumbag than Cogs ever could have been IMO, at least Cogs comes by his stupidity honestly, it simply comes natural to him.

A lot of people are very upset right now but if you look at the bigger picture this crisis will end up being a huge positive. We are likely to get rid of ALL the bad apples including Incognito, Ireland, Philbin, and maybe even Ross. Jonathan Martin will pave the way for a better environment in the locker room for decades to come. Its all very good...in the long run.

There you go. Martin said he'd F'n murder all of Cogs family a week ago.

Exactly Bobby. The truth is there's nothing new about this. Management in any business will attempt to distance themselves from anything resembling a scandal. That usually means a whipping boy

Perfect Post vote from me.

The media needs to shut the hell up already. There is racism everywhere. Why don't they focus on real news... Martin is a wuss. Anyone ever wonder what they call each other during games I'm sure worst are said to each other. Had Incognito not used the N word this wouldn't be a debate because it happens in any sports from Middle School to the pros. I just find it entertaining all it is , is awe poor me bs. Anyways the s(U)cks ass and the DC for that team is an ass hat. Kinda of sad the UCF will have more of a significant game than the "U".

If Incognito can produce the text he claims was sent by Martin to him it's a game changer.

A lot of people are very upset right now but if you look at the bigger picture this crisis will end up being a huge positive. BPOTD!!

Cant wait to see Mando's article after the Interview with Richie............

That pretty much takes bullying off the table. Martin said almost the same exact thing a week before he turned traitor on his brother. That's damning. Some of you guys just don't want to be reasonable and listen to both sides. You never do.

Cognito will sue the Dullfins too!

Wash.....

Even if he did plan the whole thing,....

Who provided him with the evidence?

Tony Nathan...if it was that simple then everyone would be doing it. This will set a very bad president if allowed to become the norm. Every team, every coach, and every GM, will be on high alert for any member of their squad who remotely looks at them the wrong way. This will only end badly for everyone involved and that is the sad part of it IMO.

I think its safe to say Incognito is lieing as usual.

if its real chris then he can, u can have any texts u have gotten brought back by calling company. dont tell your wife this

"The media needs to shut the hell up already."

Prepare to be TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED for at least two months. This is just the beginning.

agree marc, it will be almost like winning super bowl if we finally fire ireland

WashPhinFan you NAILED IT.

I've been a roofer for 13 years and i need a lawyer.....lol

E

So so tell me how if there is no bullying this is on Philbin or Ireland? You guys are just stubbornly unreasonable about your own itty bitty feelings that don't fit your narrative.

Wash.....

Even if he did plan the whole thing,....

Who provided him with the evidence?

Like I said at the end of my last post Kris...Cogs comes by his stupidity honestly, it is just in his nature. Martin on the other hand is a cold, calculating, coward...he is using this entire incident to avenge his removal from the left side of the line and is doing a very good job of it to.

Some of you are so naive. The contents of this interview are already known/leaked.

Responses/'reactions' by journalists, pundits and David Cornwell, Dolphin's legal team are already in the can. First, they're join to give RI enough rope to...

Jay Glazer just posted on twitter that the Cogs text from Martin does exist and he has it.

I think this helps Cogs case and makes Martin look worse

at this pt does it matter joey. both those guys will never play a down again for us, lets just hope this finally gets rid of ireland

Incognito = Bad apple
