Incognito: Racism, bad words 'what I regret most'

There's a saying that any man who serves as his own lawyer has a dummy as a client. Well, here's a new corollary to that and it's, if you're suspended from your $235,000 a week job because you are being accused of racism and the NFL is investigating you, it's probably not a great idea to go on national television.

Yet that is what Richie Incognito is doing today. He taped an interview with FOX on Saturday and portions of it will be aired starting at noon on the FOX pregame show.

And in that interview, Incognito admits he used racial epithets with teammate Jonathan Martin. And he tried to excuse himself for doing that in his best social scientist approach possible by saying that's just the way things are in the Dolphins locker room.

"All this stuff coming out, it speaks to the culture of our locker room, it speaks to the culture of our closeness, it speaks to the culture of our brotherhood," Incognito says in the interview.

"And the racism, the bad words," here it comes, "that's what I regret most, but that's a product of the environment and that's what we use all the time."

[Update: Incognito tells FOX he and Martin just communicated differently. He said the week before Martin left the team, the tackle left him a text message that read in part, "I will murder your whole (expletive) famil." "Now, did I believe Jonathan Martin was going to murder my entire family? No," Incognito said.]

The sound you hear is Incognito's career going down the tubes.

One way Incognito could emerge from this NFL investigation with a light sentence, so to speak, is if he can show that he was compelled to treat Martin as he did. In other words, if he was acting under orders. He declined to address that topic in the interview. Another way he can get off easier is if he can show that his employer knew of the treatment and did nothing, thus tacitly approving of his behavior.

But if Incognito's logic for calling his teammate a "half-n----r" as he did in that infamous voice message is that it's just the culture and the brotherhood and an alternate approach to communicating, then the roof is going to drop on him.

In a preview of the interview released by FOX, Incognito says of the scandal: "This isn't an issue about bullying. This is an issue about my and Jon's relationship."

Wonder if Martin would agree?

Incognito says what we already know when he encourages people to ask teammates who they believed had Martin's back most. "They'll undoubtedly tell you me," he said.

I've been told Incognito in the interview claimed he and Martin where friends. He expresses concern for his former teammate, particularly his health. Incognito talks of being surprised by the Dolphins suspending him.

Will there be a bombshell? I doubt it.

But tune in anyway.

NFL wages SKYROCKETED right after the WFL signed Csonka/Warfield/Kiick to $1 million dollars each. This was 1975.

Once Pandora has been opened, what gets out, can not be placed back. To not lose anymore of their top rate stars the NFL had t match.

So, lets just keep right on blaming the fans for players bad behavior. Just as in society, we have good and bad behavior in every institute that exists.

Sam I Am,
This "golf volunteer" groupie chick probably asked for this treatment.
Understand there's more to this than what you think you know.
She's probably a gold digger, paternity suit type.
Football players get approached by these types all of the time.
She was no lady.
Get over it.

Also, I guess in your interpretation the holocaust was a hoax. If not, it was the Jews fault for pissing off Hitler.

Wake me up when Bullygate ends.

This is like watching the show cops, where the beaten wife accuses her husband of battery only to drop the charges for her man.

These two just as awful as each other. Two big kids wating all of our time. This makes Philbin look weak and Ireland look as incompetent as ever.

Only silver lining for teh fans is that they may both leave now, yes !!!

Sad, Sam. Just sad. Hard to know what's in some people's heads. This was a young woman, volunteering her time for a very special Dolphins charity event. She's not given the benefit of the doubt but a jerk with a drinking and behavior history like Incognito is given a pass??! Crazy.

The whole Cogs incident is over. So you guys can just keep railing on and on among yourselves...I understand it's what you guys do. You were wrong, are wrong and just aren't willing to admit it. There you go trolls Merry Christmas. You got your moment in the sun but it's over. Now you can go back to pretending to be fans and spewing new lies.

Mando your last tweet is unbelievable! You will do or say anything, even at the expense of making it up to further the Martin cause. You are a irresponsible, hack journalist. You should lose your job over this. I can't believe it!

Now, now. calm down everyone. Cogs said his piece and yes it seemed a bit self serving, but at least he faced up to the media and spoke. Martin on the other hand is in hiding and will not meet with the press under any circumstances and I am sure it is by order of his parents and his attorney. Martin is a coward and hides behind those who wish to bring down this organization and for what, a move to right tackle which he clearly deserved and I am sure knew was coming?

Folks are reading way more into this than the evidence supports. Martin wanted out of Miami, that I have no doubt about. His actions before, during, and after his departure speaks volumes about his motives and character. He may be a well educated individual with parents that are hard core corporate lawyers, but he is no fool. He will keep silent and allow his family and his attorney to destroy lives and careers simply because he couldn't handle the culture of the NFL and couldn't perform at his job.

If he is allowed to return to the league, no one will be safe from his scrutiny and he will be shunned by everyone in the profession and rightfully so.

yosarian! wow, someone who actually reads on this website. amazing. did you know it is fifty years since catch-22 was published? and how many milo minderbenders do you see every day in sports stories? or in the news? lol....

armando, keep it up. good story, and you are on the money. there are a few people out there who get it. we really do.
the effect of a bully on a child or an adult lasts forever. saying you're sorry does not help!
it is not something to be made light of. the people online who are making fun of your statements may have been bullied or have bullied others themselves.
do you remember being bullied? i certainy remember it, and where i come from knives or guns become involved with "punch the guy in face.". and i have seen too many teachers bullying their students. sarcasm is also a way of bullying someone. do you know what the literal meaning of the word is? the derivation? think about it.
the whole world bullies other nations. american diplomacy has two ways of working. we bribe or we bully. and so it goes...

Fact is Mando. Jay Glazer saw it on his phone and verified it. So just give it up man it's over.

We want Ross gone also.

Armando, are you saying that the way for incognito to save his career is for him to sell out his coaches??? I really doubt that would be a selling feature to a new team. And if that is indeed what you meant, you are the scum here..

The bullying issue that never was is dead.. thank goodness. Also I have no problem with a coach asking a player to help toughen up another player. It's a measurable in this league. It's like a math teacher asking a student to smarten up. Sorry this is not hop scotch.

Sam-I-Am, you are correct. Richie does need to produce evidence. I didn't say he didn't and want him too. According to others who watched fox he did. Wait to see it for yourself which I'm sure you will. All I said was fact: Martin did not produce a voicemail. His camp produced a transcript...of a truncated voicemail. That's it.

Agreed Mark...Cogs may be allot of things, but he is no snitch, unlike Martin he does have some integrity and loyalty, maybe a bit misdirected, but it will serve him well during and after this crisis.

TruthHurts...i believe the TE coach did something similar to Fasano with Egnew last year. He didn't say beat his Arse but you got the drift. It was on Hard knocks.

But this is the issue. The have mostly let the race part go once the players stepped in and said they basically gave richie free reign with the word. Once richie presents his texts verifying his info, then they are join to go back to the "n' word and this episode that happened last year which Richie already paid for. Forgetting what this was actually originally about: a bigger guy supposedly getting bullied by his smaller friend guy.

going not join

drsamii that is very true I saw it too. The whole case is hogwash always was and some of us suggested it but few wanted to believe it. This was their chance to pound the pulpit about how out of control this team is or how evil Richie is. The text Martin sent proves how they privately joked around in the proper context. I don't give a rats tail if it was goofy pictures or not it shows they joked around about it. PERIOD

Cogs is clearly holding the truth back regarding coaches, first he wants paying, 2nd he wants his job back and his name clearing. If he gets neither from the fins the truth comes out!
The whole front office including Philbin should be fired over this and I believe will be!

Martin's text to Cogs: U Decide

Only made me lmao!

We want to start from scratch. As in 1970.

The @wmdavidcornwell release on Twitter: we're supposed to believe Martin was kidding but Incognito was serious...?

For Cogs to text it has to be bullying and serious...for Martin to say the same thing it's funny? Two different standards?

This bullying and atmosphere BS was conjured by the media and those looking to serve their own interests. Cogs was vilified and it was dangerously close to slander/libel. I got news for you trolls Cogs has rights too even if he is a meathead and was wrong for his part. That was the way they communicated like it or not.

This is an opportunity for Philbin and his staff to really show what they're made of.

If they are truly aloof and have no control of this locker room, no way they win a game on a national stage Monday night with all the distractions.

If they've kept the team focused on the game plan and can get them to play hard we are certainly capable of beating the Bucs.

It seems like I say this every week but here we go again. This is a must win game.

1970 was the year Shula came here and cleaned the mess George Wilson had going on here, ALoco.

If not, We prefer the Nothing.

Martins atty has to be lickin his chops every time Incognito opens his dumb mouth.

I guess it was!!! This response from SBNation:

I dont think Martin extorted any money from Incognito lol

The most interesting pertinent fact about Incognito's interview is that he retains 1100 text messages exchanged with Martin over the last year on his phone and turned them over to Fox Sports. Up til this point I thought Martin and his lawyers were seeking a lucrative settlement to make up for the fact that Martin was failing in his career as a tackle. Perhaps. But if he is making the same sort of comments as Incognito back in his comments then the whole "hostile work environment" suit becomes moot.

Mando you are an embarrassment, we all know you have an axe to grind with the fins.

The Dolphins had to know Incognito was holding OL meetings at strip clubs and fining anyone not in attendance....

Yeah...a win on Monday would help big time for team and coaches. Go phins

ARMANDO, In regaurds to your twitter comment. Its not about you against Incognitn or Martin... IT'S ABOUT YOU TRYING TO TAKE OUT THE DOLPHIN HIERARCHY !

I don't care whether it was goofy pictures or not. It shows they used the same language in their communication. Not to mention they shared 1142 texts. You don't do that with someone allegedly bullying you. Good Luck blood sucking lawyer proving it.

Yeah Mando...your true colors are showing....whatsamatter, nobody shares with you anymore?

Rick Sanchez played O line. BBBBBBZZZZZZZZZZZ

How the hell did Cogs play Fox??? And WTF do we need to decide Armando...Martin sent similar text to Cogs so his case is trash!!! You media fahguts didn't even present Cogs entire VM...you are scum!!! Its not anout you??? Hahahahahah!!! That's rich bro...you make it completely about you and the proof is in the fact that you have to try to say otherwise...loser...

Mando you are an embarrassment, we all know you have an axe to grind with the fins.

Doesnt EVERYONE hate the pathetic franchise??

Wow! After reading the SBNation reaction, I guess this is just going to continue on now as Martin the playful, creative victim and Incognito as the menacing, threatening bully. Jeez.

I wish every poster here would not hide behind a nickname and debate under their true name. That will come, also.

Fact is that's a devastating text to the case by Martin and probably one of many that showed the context of the private messages they shared. So trying to split hairs on this single one and saying the intent of one guy compared to the other is huge reach.

WHY do you think the Martin camp only gave us that one little text of 1142 and provided us no context??? It's lawyer spin is why. This is how they squeeze and create pressure to get the most money possible. Blood sucking lawyers. Pfft

Armando is an embarassment to the human race, never mind journalism

Has Ireland resigned yet?

Oscar - u are a cancer

The sound you hear is Incognito's career going down the tubes.

Actually Armando, that is your so called 'career'

Armando is the best Dolphin writer on the planet. Great insight and timely articles. Dont be surprised if ESPN or Yahoo sports comes offering him a better position very soon. In the meantime we should appreciate his great journalism while we have him. Armando, keep up the great articles.

That's pretty funny Oscar @ 538 since you are the biggest perpetrator.

Not exactly what my patients call me, Jonathan. Only you here, up to now.

Armando is on a mission to take cut the head off the Dolphins. Simply put He has an agenda here! Now that martin is loseing credibility by the hour He has turned the mob on the front office. GO get them boy Go get em Bring the torches and fire wood burn them at the stake ............... Lets end this season

How can anyone be a fan of this team?

You must be some kind of fool, deity, or a wick. All you have to do is look me up on Internet. Yes, that's me, like me or not.

Armando knows he is done covering the Fins. His only chance is to get the front office fired and suck up to the new regime. I bet you would do fine covering soccer or high school football .......... It's comical watching you tank your carrer. Your motivs are so transparent. I almost feel bad for you you FOOL !

Cogs said very clearly..."Now did I think Jon was going to kill my whole family? Of course not." He was clearly stating that the two of them had a unique relationship and their communication was also unique. He was trying to provide context that their relationship was playful, humorous and intended to be friendship based...from his perspective.

He wasn't playing Fox. He was using Martin's text as an example of the banter between them that took place regularly.

Mando, I don't know what YOUR agenda is but based on your many comment this week you would be well served to go silent on this drama and focus on the game tomorrow night. You are sounding foolish and jaded for sure.

Oscar that's just not going to happen for us to show our true identities. Besides what's it really matter. I honestly don't care who is who. It's not relevant to their posts and thinking.

I have seen people get stalked by using their true identities on FB. I have heard people contacting bloggers employers and calling their home phones over disagreements. That's just not safe.

Jimmy Johnson on FOX seemed to have a more opened mind about this whole situation after hearing the interview and put the blame on Incognito for going to far and on Martin for handling it the wrong way. Incognito was very transparent giving up his phone with 1142 texts (nothing to hide). Martin even said 2 days before Incognito was suspended "We are good man, I don't know where all this stuff is coming, this is insane. Congrats on the win, I don't blame you guys for this at all, this is just what happens in a NFL locker room and it was getting to me a little bit. Of course Armando does not report this part of the story because it does not support his biased argument against Incognito.

Armando is chastising Incognito for not hiring a lawyer but I think that shows that Incognito has nothing to hide. As one player in the fins locker room sais this is all about money for Martin. He needs to make sure that he can collect the rest of the money he is owed in his contract. This guy is despicable.

Brickhouse you are right. Next year the Herald will have to assign a new beat writer to the Dolphins. He will never get another story from the fins. He is attacking the whole organization, instead of waiting for all the facts to come out.

And BTW Armando, FOX has all of the texts that were send between Incognito and Martin, so how could he be lying about Martin threatening Incognito's family.

Armando has pushed all his chips in the middle of the table ... When the cards are flipped he will either get a national gig or he will be working the drive through at McDonals. Big gamble. I have to say you may have lost what little integrity you ever had but you've got a big set of balls.
