Wallace vs. Cromartie: Shut the other guy up

It was obvious last week the Carolina Panthers had no idea how to stop Dolphins reciever Mike Wallace. He was open short, deep, intermediate. He scored one touchdown on a 57-yard catch but he might have had three other TDs if passes had caught him in stride or he'd made some tough catches.

It was a classic mismatch.

This weekend when the Dolphins face the New York Jets, there should be less of a mismatch available to Wallace because it should be Antonio Cromartie shadowing him all over the MetLife Stadium field.

If Cromartie, who is nursing a hip injury, plays, then New York's finest cornerback will be locked up on Wallace.

(Yes, it's possible the Jets might decide to play Cromartie in man against No. 2 WR Brian Hartline and then double and roll coverages to Wallace).

But that would be unexpected.

And if this matchup plays out as expected -- as Wallace surely expects it will -- the key might be gaining the upper hand early and making the Jets loud cornerback something of a mute.

"He's a smart guy. He talks a lot," Wallace said. "He's going to try to get in your head so you just got to make plays and shut him up. Shut him up early, I think it'll be a long day for him."

Ah yes, but the battle of words is fought with a two-edged sword. If Wallace makes plays early and shuts up Cromartie, apparently taking some of his swag in the process, then the Dolphins receiver has the edge.

But if Wallace can't make plays early in the game, Cromartie's chirping will get louder. The cornerback's confidence will grow -- perhaps in conjunction with Wallace's frustration. And then?

"If not, it could the other way around. It'll be a long day for you," Wallace admits. "You just got to try to make plays and stay into the game and not get caught up in the extra stuff with him. I know he's going to talk. At the same time, he's a guy who can talk and back it up so I'm not going to take anything away from him."

It is hard to take anything away from Cromartie (except maybe a child support check) because he is a physical freak.

"He's a tall, long, rangey guy who even though he's that big, he likes to shadow and just play full speed," Wallace said.

Wallace played against the Jets last season when he was with the Steelers. He caught five passes for 74 yards and a touchdown.

A repeat of that kind of day might be considered something of a win by the Dolphins.

Wallace is giving all he's got, it's just that Tanny can't hit him. They could have had 5 more long TD's if Tanny could reach him.

For this game, it will be interesting to see which Miami Dolphins team shows up...will it be the first half team that goes up on it's opponents, or the second half team that gives up and does not look like they have a clue.

Wallace needs to make circus catches - but more importantly, the balls that hit his hands have to ALWAYS be caught - he's missed a few this year. Tannehill - you've got to play a complete game.

I'm also looking forward to seeing new running backs in the game this week. Thomas just does not do it for this team. If the coaches think the other two RBs (Thigpen & Gillisee) are that bad - they must be VERY bad. Another failure on the coaches and GM in picks. How could one team have so many seconds on a team?

Wallace and the rest of this team should win this game, and keep their mouths shut and act like they have won a few games in the NFL before. It's an important win (if they get it) but it's not the most important win of the season...they still have a long way to go.

Does anything other than the next draft matter at this point?

I would like to see Wallace practice how to fight for the ball and catch it at the highest point with his hands and learn to draw the interference flag if the ball is under thrown. It counts the same. Newton drew the flag with that flop.

Go get him Mike. Don't underestimate Cromartie and don't talk to him. It just feeds him. Same as Ryan. Let them do all the braggadocio. Quiet beats these guys.

henne had trouble hitting on the deep ball also. tanne is much the same. we need to bring in a mentor to actually teach these guys how it is done. you have to get the ball out there deep with some air underneath it and trust your receiver to "go get it"! tanne ,like henne, just hasn't grasped the concept mentally or physically. speed receivers, like mike wallace, should not be underthrown time after time.

It's the QB stupid eh?

This would all be just dandy if Wallace did'nt lead the entire NFL in dropped balls!! And you Tannehill haters out there do not tell me that all of those drops were bad pass',because I have seen Wallace time after time drop pass' right in his hands.

All this stuff being suggested by you guys is meaningless unless we have better play calling and better coaching, which we have been lacking. All coaches must put our depleted players in a position to win games. No mistakes, whether admitted or not.

i like tanne and believe in his ability. i do think he benefits from a veteran mentor; matt moore. tanne is a much better QB than RG/ME! tanne has progressed nicely in spite of a weak OL and no run game. what he has accomplished is significant under the circumstances. one weakness, however, is his "deep ball" which he will figure out. for me tanne is a bright spot this year who has been asked to carry the offense without a run game or pass protection. that falls on the GM and coach.

Uh, Oh... now I suspect we'll have a lot of back and forth here today on Tannehill vs Wallace: Tanne can't hit the long ball... Wallace can't catch... the OL can't protect THill, etc.

Well, Wallace demonstrated that he can catch the long ball in Pitt- but those were over-the-shoulder as he was running away from defenders. He can catch short ones, too, and turn them into long gains. He needs to have the ball thrown his way more often than coaches are allowing- both long and short.

Tannehill has to learn to play under pressure ("pressure" as defined and compiled by PFF). All NFL QBs not named Peyton Manning play under pressure. Tannehill takes a lot of sacks; makes minimal yardage gains; throws a high percentage of interceptions; and a low percentage of TDs under duress. This all while playing behind a line allowing an average amount of "pressures". Sacks don't tell the whole story.

Jets sweep The Phins.

with the running game likely going nowhere, we'll throw early and often towards Wallace. He'll get his opportunities, now he must step up and produce

bill cale is a Fraud. Can't even back up his own statements which are usually made up fantasy observations he presents as facts.

Trust me, he is a fraud.

Bottom line hennehill sucks. 3rd tier qb just like the article says. At the end of bullygate all these losers won't be there anyway.

Wallace should really learn to just say "no comment"...

Last time Wallace welcomed this kind of innuendo....The Cleveland CB had him storming off the feild after a WIN....owned him all day....

Wallace....some of his own doing (dropped passes...not fighting hard for the ball)....some of it Tanne's horrible passes (short...long (once)...and out of bounds @ least a few)....

They can BOTH be better....but Wallace has more roome for error due to past performance.

The difference...

Wallace is PROVEN as Bill Cale pointed out....Tanne is the question mark....

This game is to prove which of the two teams is the worst in all the areas.
Indeed, which Dolphins are we going to see, Mr. Jeckyll or Mr. Hyde, or both.
The playoffs are already settled. The only spot available will be taken by the Ravens. So for the n-time, the Dolphins should start planning next season, and we fans, should start lighting some candles to hope that next year will be better. Certainly it won't be so if Ireland is still the GM by April, in which case, we should start quiting as fans.
The remaining 5 games are to prove how strong our mind and lever are. Are we going to turn insane by rage and madness, or it will give us some tiny hope for the future ?
I think it will be the former option, unfortunately. So be prepared with your best arsenal of insults and criticisms towards the staff, players, owner, GM, etc.

Does anything other than the next draft matter at this point?

It matter whether your mom spits or swallows....

The 3 buses full of men who have paid a Buck Each to find out are taking bets on which is true.... I'm looking for inside info... Surely as her son you would know better then anyone....

What seems to happen every year- the Dolphins have a lackluster record and slim playoff hopes, so for me, my super-bowls become the Jets games, (cuz I hates da Jets)

I would like to see another butt fumble.

Be nice to see some wheel routes and deep cross. I'm guessing they're in the playbook but Sherman never calls them.

Just want to bring up a point to the hypcrisy of the NFL and ESPN. Aldon Smith whom has been in "rehab" for his alocohol consupmtion and is facing 3 Felony Gun charges is free to roam the field without hardly any personal scathe. To which the judge delayed his hearing so he could finish his season.
Yet a grown man cries foul for his teammate being mean to him and the NFL and ESPN blow up, crucifying a player, with a past, to prove their own agenda.
That was my rant for the day. Now onto the wets

The Dolphins should be more concerned about T-hill hitting Wallace and his other receivers in stride. Especially on deep routes as teams are going to start playing the receivers very close inviting T-hill to go deep. T-hills lack of accuracy on deeper balls is a major issue that the Jets should test. The Dolphins have not asked T-hill to go deep often. The 4th quarter issues of moving the ball on offense could be due to teams adjusting and playing what the Dolphins do to move the ball and that's pass on shorter routes....

I have no worries about Wallace getting open, the problem lys with the weak armed QB the Dulphins trot out there every Sunday. Tanne can throw the ball 60 yds, but couldn't hit a garbage truck open in the end zone.

Has Ireland been fired yet?

matty outoftowner,

Incognito should go to jail for racism, extortion, and discriminaton and Ireland should be fired for bringing that scumbag to the team

To be honest, losing Thomas for a few weeks may be a blessing in disguise. I've never cared for a RB backfield by comity. I believe it limits the ability for a RB to get rolling. I'm NOT making player comparisons, but I'll make a situation comparison. Ricky Williams often didn't start out well. I can recall more then a few times him being in negative yardage for 10 or so carries... then, after being pummeled and having to tackle that dude over and over... Defenses started going soft, he would break a few 7 and 8 yard run and then snap off a 25 yard carry... It was a "Body of work"... Not just a few carry's with a stat to whine about.

It's also a good opportunity to field another rookie. NEVER a bad idea when your team is looking for answers and play makers.

Pouncey will be back... I believe after this game Miami should and will reinstate Dark Richie.... No matter what happens... if Miami wants a running game to work... they HAVE TO GIVE THE RB CARRY'S.... A string of them... a COMMITMENT to them. New York only allows 2.9 yards a carry.... But you NEED to be able to get first downs and kill clock.

This team is better then it is playing... I'll never quite understand when fans started looking at the Dolphins as a completed team... They're not... They're a team in the 2nd year of an entire overhaul.... believing anything else doesn't hold water.

Kris, I see it differently. I think Wallace has the upper-hand. First off, we WON'T be able to run against them (no one does). That means we'll need to pass early and often (what's new). Second, I'm in the minority in the belief that Tannehill/Wallace are starting to come together. Not just from last week, but just over the season I think they are more comfortable with each other. And the talk Tannehill had with the coaches solidified it, he needs to take more shots. Lastly, there's absolutely, 100% NOTHING to lose. Like the Redskins, I think people are playing for their jobs now (not the Playoffs). So they better take as many shots as possible because losing isn't even an option anymore, so why not?

As to Tannehill being able to deliver the ball accurately enough, that's another story, but I'm probably more optimistic than most he'll be better than 16%.

Agree, losing D Thomas has to be a plus.

Jets 9. Dolphins39 last years score

Cro is having a down year. He doesn't scare me at all. The real is our O-line vs their front 7. We should be able to torch their corners.

You are going to have to do better than that.

nemo, mw has been torching db's all season long but pop gun arm just keeps mixxing

I'm starting the Jets' defense this week on my fantasy team. There will be sacks & turnovers, and Miami won't be able to run the ball or score a lot of points. Fantasy points for me! 10-3, here I come!
I love my Dolphins, but I try to be realistic...I'd love to see them win, but I think It depends which Geno Smith shows up, and Miami's run defense (which has been dissappointing thus far).

Thomas out is a plus...I only saw him run for 10+ yards twice all year...Also sucked picking up the blitz.

Next man up please and you never know how a rookie will perform when the lights are on.

Pouncey back is a good thing...maybe we can establish the run?

Finally, Tannehill to Wallace is getting better each week and I predict it continues on Sunday.

Tannehill - 290 yards, 2 TD/ 1 INT
Wallace - 110 1 TD

Fins 20
Jets 13

regis, mm best get 1st team snaps at camp davie
tputz ain't gonna make it out of the 1st q
bllllllllllllllllllllllitz a comin'

2 watt...bet Ireland is kicking himself for passing on Vontae Leach now...HA!

nh, i gotz that feelin that its gonna be ugly 4 the phinz folks

2 watt, not sick of being wrong and being an anus on top of it?

Siad Tannehill was going to get smashed last week and he put up 344 yards on the panthers

Miami's run D really needs to show up in this one. There is no chance Geno beats them alone.

I have a gut feeling that the team will gel this weekend and actually play a complete game.
No facts or figures to back it up...just that little voice in the back of my head that's always right.

Yes, throw early and often. Got to put points on the board in the 1st three quarters because we damn sure can't do it in the 4th. 9 routes, deep cross, wheel, 10 yard comebacks.....no throws less than 1st down marker!!!

what difference does it make when the only quarterback we have that can hit Wallace in stride is stuck on the bench ever since the Mr Magoo crew came to town, people so pig headed that they`d ruin an entire season squander 60 million on a guy that could be lighting up the score board like a pinball machine , is stuck doing what Devone Bess did last year for a fraction of the money, These coaches and their ego`s just refuse to admit they made a mistake, we`d of had 21 more points on the board last week with Moore behind center,

Brian...how are you so sure that Matt Moore would be able to hit Wallace in stride?
Is there film showing this magical feat?

Don't you think MM would be feeling the same blitz pressure that Tannehill is today?

We can speculate all we want and you may even be right...but we'll never know.

Mark from Toronto,

T-hill put up NO points in the entire 2nd half when it counted. One could say that Sherman running the same plays or his lack of creativity is the issue. However teams make the needed adjustments on the Dolphins. Could it be that teams are playing the WR's closer and allowing the Dolphin's 2nd year QB to try and beat them with something other than a short pass. There can be many answers why the Dolphins are shut down when it counts. T-hill has to be more accurate deep in addition to the play callers going for what is given to them.

I hope you are on the money...but...and like you...I think they are coaching for their jobs....but have little chance to save them...and almost zero chance should we only win one or two more games....

Rex Ryan seat is just a HOT as Philbin's....

that is the real story line behind this mess..

This could be billed as the coach for your job bowl...

How could Rex Ryan's job be on the line here? He had to purge several players from his roster and is hamstrung with the worst starting QB in the NFl statistically... he also has wins against the Saints and Pats under his belt.

If this man ever became availble, I'd take him in a second, as long as he didn't make Sparano the OC. He handles dfenses magnificently and stays out of teh offenses way... he recognizes his limitations and accentuates his strengths.

I'd take Rex in a heartbeat as well.

promichael, say what you want but you can't put any of that loss on Tannehill except maybe the one long pass he overthrew but that one missed opportunity is one of about ten missed plays this team made that allowed that win to escape.

IN the end, he did contirbute almost 350 yards of offense on a true elite defense. That is quite the feat this year.

mark who won last week homer?
u can take u'r stats and stix them uppa u anus

mark, thats what u liv on stats huh?
the only important stat is the f'ng winz column
f'ng stats

Dolphins fans have got to consider this QB work in progress may have been a mistake. Ross wanted a franchise QB, Joe Philbin is hired who hires a guy who was fired as the HC of Texas A&M, Sherman gets his college QB to start with a similar offense and so it went. Philbin trusts Sherman but in my view Sherman is a guy who should retire. Something is not right when teams shut down the Dolphins when it counts! Playing Matt Moore would allow the Dolphins to know weather this guy Tannehill is NFL material. He has been given a lot without earning it from his former HC in college who was fired....why waste more time if Moore, who is not a long term answer, comes in and lights up the scoreboard when it counts.....

promicahel, 7 years of watching Matt Moore play, everyone knows he isn't the answer.

mark, post sum mo statz on the phinz 4 game losing streak

2 watt, yeah i do live off stats ... literally. That's what a financial analyst does.

Analyzing stats allows me to make a nice income and to have an extremely high return on my investments.

f'ing stats...

and mark, it wuz a blitz sax that eneded the game last week in a loss

2 watt, you're as far off on the Dolphins record at this point as I am ... you thought this would eb scorched earth by now...

i let my fa worry 'bout those statz mark

If long bomb passes were so simple to complete why didn't Wallace have 50 TDs a season when he was with Pitt and had a all-star QB throwing to him. Think about it people.
