A win for the Dolphins and something more

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- I have no idea if the Dolphins are going to make the playoffs. No one does.

As of today, they are still on the outside looking in as Baltimore is holding the final AFC playoff spot over Miami despite both teams having the same 6-6 record. The Ravens, you'll recall, defeated the Dolphins and that is the difference between them now.

Frankly, I saw a bad first half from Miami Sunday followed by a promising second half. That speaks about these Dolphins because they are nothing if not inconsistent. So I can't tell you that fine second half dominance over the Jets is going to carry over to next week.

Or the week after.

Or the one after that.

But I do know this:

The Dolphins ruined the Jets season on Sunday. They not only beat the Jets, they demoralized them.

The Dolphins pounded not one but two Jets quarterbacks. People got benched.

Rex Ryan was sick about it.

That's the Jets we're talking about. And the Dolphins just about put their season to bed.

As for Ben...he doesn't look to run, contrary to popular belief, he is great at avoidance...much like Marino. More of a mover than a scrambler. His intent is to elude pressure but not cross the line of scrimmage. His top priority is to throw the ball. With a guy like Ben the corner have to hold coverage, the rusher have to keep Ben boxed in and a LB should be assigned to "spy" him. There WR are not that great and there run game is not what it used to be. The Defense is on the old side. This is a very winnable game if the good Dolphin team shows up.

Sturgis Didn't miss a kick in preseason or early reg season, that is why he is here.

Big ben has been every bit the top 10 Qb this year that he should be. having a very good year as everything burns around him. But he will present gifts to our defense. If we can keep the turnover margin at least even, we will win ... barring some horrible weather. We got a gift from the weather gods yesterday...

DC, I think the Steelers will be tough at their place but we still have a great chance. These are the type of games we have to win to make the playoffs.

Steelers have some serious offensive line issues. The backup center that was filling in for their Pouncey got hurt against Baltimore and is on IR. Another O-lineman and Leveon Bell their rookie rb were hurt. I'm not sure of their status for Sunday.

When they have the ball the things that scare me the most are Heath Miller and Ben scrambling to buy time or running for first downs. Dion Jordan might be able to help with both these things this game. Antonio Brown is a stud, but so is Grimes.

When we have the ball we will be able to move it, we just have to avoid the big turnover. Polamalu and the rest of the D is a few steps slower this year.

After typing that up, I think we have a decent chance if we execute. If the coaches or players make dumb mistakes though we will be in trouble.

MIT you are correct about Ben...the weather will be an important factor only if it rains or snows. I am not one that believes that a cold temperature affects the Phins anymore than the a cold weather team. That being said the heat is different. The heat does affect the cold weather teams in an adverse way in the winter months.

Meanwhile, Carpenter has hit 21 out of 23 field goals for Buffalo. Sturgis has missed 7 kicks including a couple of short ones. Sturgis is a major concern. There will be some close games coming up. I hope that one of these games does not come to a Sturgis FG.

Mark, I noticed that too (on that play). I liked seeing it. Enough is enough with these ticky-tack, drive stalling ghost penalty calls. Refs need to get a clue, we're a pretty clean team when it comes to that, Philbin spends time making sure of it, so he's right to get angry.

We also don't know if Tomlin will be suspended a game for his cheating antic on Thursday.

Gotta go fellow fans....hope to talk later. Great win yesterday!

Looks like a high of 31, but no rain/snow in Pitt on Sunday.

Bill, Zero % chance Tomlin gets suspended (he's on the rules committee). He'll get a fine, maximum. They're talking about taking away a draft pick, and that's just ludicrous.

I agree NeMo. I see no reason to fear the Steelers. IF we play our good game then we will beat them. We are just better.

And for once it's nice to know that we have a Qb that will be able to pass with the one he's playing against. been way too long since that happened.

i think t-hills throws to a player not to a spot on the field and that is why most of his balls do not hit a player in stride. I am not a QB and do not know if that comes with expereience or you are just born with the mechanics. but it would be nice for him to hit more players in stride short and long. I did see a few short to medium ones yesturday

agree as bad as this season has been. always fun to watch jets suffer

pitt been tough at home. pitt a 3.5 pt fav. take the under of 41

mark what makes u think we are better than pitt.

agree bill very winnable game, as it should be vs a 5-7 team. but have beat bills, ravens, lions last 3 home games. there d is very good at home. the 3.5 line sounds about right. i was thinking 4. the under of 41 should be auto

Steelers were dropping like flies last week. The only thing is they played thursday and have time to heal a little. but i still think things are looking up for us. things are starting to click.

so really cold 2 watt but nothing else really changing the game.

wally one week vs a bad jets team doesnt make much click. remember just over a week ago everyone was ripping everyone from top on down after a horrible game vs carolina. takes more than one win to start thinking this team has turned a corner. they have had chance after chance to but failed with bad losses to bills, tampa, carolina. that could be 9-3, thats the difference between contenders and pretenders

A decent game against a PUTRID Jets team doesn't make me think any more of RT. He still showed the same problems as always. 2TD's, 1 INT isn't impressive at all, and this is one of his best games, EVER!

Homosexuality, Oscar? Ask Bill Arnsbarger...

dusty,if the wind stays at 7 it shudn't b 2 bad
but if there is stronger gusts?
ouch
.
lol

disagree marc on one of his best games ever. now the int wasnt on the throw, he got hit and ball went straight up. but overall i gave him a c +. but hes had much better games. he missed many open wrs and the 4th down play to hartline was wide open and he waited way to long to throw it.

I fully expect the Dolphins to win out these last 4 games and finish at 10-6. Pitt who? Child please. Playoffs here we come!

GO DOLPHINS!

Higherlander. Why don't we ever see RT sneak on those short yardage situations. The NE do it with Brady and it is generally successful. Egnew looked to be blocking quite well from FB, but guess we just don't have much power at RB. Im surprised after Thomas went down we didn't sign one.

yeah we all know how bad that wind can whirl in that stadium. the wind factor would be easily the biggest factor. but sounds like it wont be doing much.

highlander we dont have pats oline. we have a really bad one.

Jesus H Christ....the Steelers have 7 loses and we're talking like they are the freakin Broncos.

One team has put 30+ points on us this year...Drew Brees and the amazing Saints in the dome.

Our Defense is better than most people think and Tannehill is finally moving the offense with efficiency.

Another close game with 4th quarter deciding the outcome.

Fins 20
Steelers 17

9-7 is what it would take to make playoffs. and the pitt game is by far the biggest of the 4 left. pitt and balt should be in it till last week and u lose to both of them and your done. so this is the game the fins have to have, they dont have to have the pats game.

All I have to say is that Dan Marino Summed it up best with the rest of the CBS commentators. Tannehill sucks. Hang on to false gold dolphins!

Dusty, your subjective ranking is quite amusing, but let's remember those units don't play against each other - even if I did agree with your opinions. So it doesn't matter if Pitt has a better passing attack than Miami, it matters who's better passing attck is better than who's pass def. now let's be objective...

Pittsburgh has had an atrocious red zone offense all year and Miami's red zone defense has been pretty good. Miami has a good chance holding Pitt to threes.

Miami's offense will have problems generating consistent offense against Pitt - not the best matchup for them - agreed.

However Miami has been better than Pitt all year in winning the turnover battle and if this continues, all things considered, Miami should gain an edge here as well.

Those are the three highlighted areas I find that will decide this match up - now let's see if I know what the heck I'm talking about ...

nh, it's still pitt @ home any way u look at it.
it ain't the jetz

nh fin only 8 teams have scored less points than us. we havent scored over 23 in any game. def a close low scoring game. all my money is on the under.

- now let's see if I know what the heck I'm talking about ...

um , u want me 2 answer that?
i'll let u revel in the jetz loss mark
.
lol

mark u said miami was the better team. i simply went through pos wise. no biggie if u disagree. the biggest factor is they have big ben we have thill. its a qb league, be great to see thill grown up this week

Marc, ur friggin hilarious. 2 tds 1 INT is a very solid ratio in the NFL. And the yardage is mroe than impressive. Not only yesterday but all year.

pitt wins this game u have to think pitt has the wildcard. they would play home vs cincy, at a rodgers less gb team, and home vs browns

All I knoow is if Tannehill puts up 300 yards, 2 tds and a pick this sunday - we will win.

mark, don't 4get to factor in u'r boyz att's and yds per play,
pretty suxy then
.
lol

I thought Rodgers is back this week and should be back with a vengeance. The Vikings may have saved the packers season yesterday.

pitt started 0-4. so 5-3 since. this isnt a team playing bad anymore. and those 3 losses were all on road this is the toughest game we have left and biggest if your honestly thinking playoffs

mark rodgers may be done for season now, from today

mark, take it ez on u'r homers pillz
they have really bad side effects
read the small print
.
lol

come on 2 watt, thill hasnt even played 2 seasons yet. i think next year is the grow up year for him, but will be very interesting how he handles this weeks game vs a really good home team and very exp defense with the best d cord in nfl

Dusty, we have a bit of a different view of things.

QB-Pitt
RB-Miami (look at Bells stats vs Miller)
WR-Miami (Brown is good, the rest not so much.)
TE-Miami (Miller is old, Clay is young and improving.)
O-line-Even (we might even have a slight edge they are really banged up.)

D-line-Miami
LB-Pitt if Woodley plays, if not its prob even. (Though Ellerbee and Wheeler have improved lately.)
S- Pitt (Polamalu is not as good as he once was though.)
CB- Miami (Grimes is better than Taylor and Carroll and Wilson are improving.)

This team isn't as good as in years past, they are 5-7 for a reason.

Armando,

This blog is constantly debating the future of Ryan Tannehill. Is he "The Guy" or not. Well, with his second season 3/4 done here are some interesting stats.
Here is how the QB draft class of 2012 stacks up.
Andrew Luck QB Rating of 82.4
RG3 QB rating of 83.3
Ryan Tannehill QB rating of 83.2
Brandon Weeden QB Rating of 70.3
Russell Wilson QB rating of 105.1
Nick Foles QB Rating of 125.2

Tannehill has improved his QB rating but Luck, RG3 and Weeden are down. AND as of now the two best QB's (if you go by ratings) are the guys drafted later in the draft in Wilson and Foles.

If Marino or Manning put up 300 YDs 2 TD's and 1 INT that's a bad game. 300 YD's in today's NFL is nothing to brag about, nor is 2 TD's. RT has only had ONE 3TD game, and he threw 2INT's and fumbled.

nemo we arent going future wise , just on this sundays game. miller very smart and solid te. leon bell i like a lot. i like miller also. id take bell if given the choice. oline disagree but i see your argument on injuries they just had. pitts corners are very good and play tough as nails. pitt easily there

nemo there top 3 wrs have 18 tds, our top 3 wrs have 9

Just think that the numbers Marino put up were expected to stand for eternity and in the last 5 years they've started to fall like crazy. Is that because Brees, Brady, Favre, and Manning are all better than Dan was? I think not.

marc do u root against thill so we get rid of him? just curious

Dusty, I guess I attribute it more to the QB than the WRs. We can agree to disagree I guess. Miller vs Clay I guess is a tossup, but look at the stats it favors Clay this year.

No offense meant or anything, just up for a little debate.

No, I don't root against RT or the team! I just want a REAL QB! RT is not it, and he won't be. In a year or 2 the rest of you will finally get it, but, it'll be too late.

favre played 60 more games than dan. im bias here cause dan is da man to me, but most outsuiders will tell u yes brady, manning are better than dan. brees is good but they throw the ball 60 times a game, records bound to be broken. its a different game now, cant even touch a wr. marino would go crazy in todays nfl

yeah nemo nothing wrong with debates. be boring if we didnt have them

fair enough marc, we shall see

That's my point. Brady couldn't even hold Dan's jock! Manning is maybe the closest, but, still not as good of a pure passer, just a better student of the game.

Brady one of the best to ever play the game. Would take him over Manning cause he's done more with less, and he has ice for blood. Great, great QB. Wish he was here, that's for sure.

On Pittsburgh, I truly hope KARMA shows up, as we owe Pittsburgh a heartbreaker.
