Dolphins vs Jets: PFF and Salguero review

The grades from tape review are in and the Dolphins predictably looked as good on tape and scored highly in the grade category for this week's ProFootballFocus review as they did on the field.

As always, I offer you PFF's assessment and add my commentary and insight.

Enjoy:

Offense:

Lamar Miller handled 65 of 82 snaps, clearly claiming lead-dog duties with Daniel Thomas sidelined. Miller ran into the Jets’ brick wall when running up the middle, recording 16 yards on 8 totes. On his 14 other carries, running either right or left, he totaled 56 yards.

Salguero: The Dolphins were a right-hand running team this game. Miller, for example, collected 54 of his yards 77 yards running to the right side.

Four of Mike Gillislee’s nine snaps came late in the fourth quarter as the Dolphins were killing the clock.

Dion Sims (45 snaps) and Michael Egnew (27 snaps) played the majority of their snaps in the second half as the Dolphins ran the ball with a lead.

Ryan Tannehill was 0-for-4 on passes 20+ yards down the field, as he did not need to go deep to beat the Jets. He was, however, 7-of-8 on passes that went 10-19 yards.

Salguero: Tannehill missed an open Brian Hartline deep down the left sideline. It would have been a TD. This QB's inability to connect deep is no longer a coincidence. It is a fact we've seen time and again over two seasons now.

Tannehill threw an interception when he was blitzed, but overall, went 8-for-11 for 134 yards when the Jets sent pressure.

Brian Hartline did a lot of his damage against rookie Dee Milliner, catching four of nine targets for 54 yards.

Mike Wallace caught four of five targets for 28 yards when matched up with Antonio Cromartie. His two longest plays, though, came against Dee Milliner (28-yard TD) and Demario Davis (21-yard catch and run).

Salguero: Milliner was benched in the third quarter. This is not the first time he's been benched this season. The No. 9 overall selection for the Jets is not picking the Rex Ryan defense up very well, not tackling well and looking nothing like the player he was at Alabama.

Charles Clay terrorized Demario Davis and Dewan Landry on Sunday, catching six of his seven passes against them for 63 of his 80 yards.

Salguero: You didn't hear much from the Miami offensive line, did you? That's what a good day sounds like. They should be anonymous. When you hear their names, bet that bad things are happening. LT Bryant McKinnie, who had his worst game of the season according to PFF last week, had his second-best day as a Dolphin versus the Jets. Nate Garner and Tyson Clabo also got positive grades. RG John Jerry and C Mike Pouncey got negative overall grades. Pouncey was downgraded mostly because of his run-blocking. But I must say, Pouncey did a masterful job of getting the Dolphins into the right blocking schemes and perhaps PFF doesn't consider that when grading the center.

Defense

After playing his most snaps of the season last week, Dion Jordan was back at 19 snaps out of a possible 55 plays. He played sparingly until the final quarter of the game.

Salguero: The Dolphins are going to have to figure something out that makes better use of Jordan going forward. Obviously, it's up to him to beat out either Olivier Vernon or Cameron Wake for more playing time. But he needs the opportunities to make plays because when granted such opportunities, he usually makes an impact.

Will Davis played the first 13 snaps of his NFL career. First, he spelled Nolan Carroll when Carroll left briefly with an injury. Then, he came in during garbage time.

Carroll was the most picked on cornerback for the Dolphins in a game that didn’t see them tested much. Carroll gave up four catches on six targets for 34 yards.

Dannell Ellerbe had one not so good play in coverage; a missed tackle on the 20-yard screen to Bilal Powell. But, he had one good play in coverage; tracking back on Greg Salas and intercepting a Geno Smith pass.

Salguero: The Dolphins had three sacks against the Jets, but that wasn't the entire story of their pressure on the QBs. Miami also had three QB hits and 12 hurries of Geno Smith and Matt Simms.

Salguero: The Dolphins defense did not have a penalty all game.

Forget 2014. Its gonna take 3 years AFTER Ireland is fired to acquire the talent to really be competitive. And thats if we get a good GM.

"Forget 2014. Its gonna take 3 years AFTER Ireland is fired to acquire the talent to really be competitive. And thats if we get a good GM."

Truth.

Me, I think we've progressed. I think BullyGate cost us a game or two. We should have had an easier time making the playoffs. Now it is questionable, I think Pitt should be worried about us.

The matter will be settled on Sunday.

Finish the final 4 games 3-1 (9-7) and I will be optimistic for next year. Anything less and I will question everything.

" But we have guys on here that claim to be fans that pick against us every week."

And half the time, they are right.

We are 6 and 6

Aside from the record, the BIG question is will Ireland be back. It is hard to know if Ross is distancing himself from Ireland or just playing the politically correct media game until the scandal passes.

He just gave Ireland an extension. Unless the investigation reveals damning evidence against him, which doesn't appear likely, I believe Ireland is back in 2014.

ireland better be gone another 7-9 season isnt gonna cut it. stadium is empty every game. ross has to finally fire his buddy

Regardless of who u.pick doesn't mean u arent a fan.

dusty do you live in Miami? Who there is going to spend $ for a game they don't follow or understand. It's a city of lower class immigrants that don't follow the sport.

Most of the fans here are north east transplants - Jets and Pats and Philly fans.

There is no other NFL city with less NFL fans than Miami. I doubt even a great team will change that. Times have changed since the glory days of the Orange Bowl.

Who saw those 760 Dolfans NYC that went to the game on Sunday? Major props to those fans. That's incredible. Those are my brother fans...not sure about many of you half fans and pretend fans.

For you out of towners, hands down Spanish is the #1 language spoken in Miami. Several commercial areas only have signs in Spanish. Shampoo has instructions in Spanish.

The NFL has done a very poor job of marketing to Latinos. They tend to target dumb white boy rednecks that like cheap beer more than pretty girls.

Dusty, what would Ireland have to do for you to want him back? Would 9-7 and a playoff birth be enough?

Here's why we win vs the Steelers...Tannehill is getting in a groove with Wallace and the rest of the offense. Secondly the defense is coming on strong.

From the Phins website. The second-year quarterback has thrown for more than 300 yards in back to back games for the Dolphins making it four on the season, and his 3,115 yards tops the list of signal callers drafted in 2012.

Have we really given up only 3 TD passes on defense this year? Read that somewhere. If so their offense with Ben plays right into the strength of our defense. I like our chances with their 3.3 ypc rushing.

NeMo

Dusty want's us to lose. He is a pessimist who thinks losing is winning

Draft picks didn't help Buffalo, didn't help St Louis, didn't help Cleveland. How are RG3 and Luck doing?

Wilson > Tannehill > Luck > RG3

For now.

So, to be a fan of the Dolphins, one must pick them to win every game? Is this correct? A real fan believes they will finish 16-0 every season. I think not.

The Steelers chances of making the playoffs this year? A horrible 2%...and that's a team we are supposed to fear? Stick a fork in them it's over. I'm sure their little scandal with Tomlin isn't helping them prepare for the game either.

Real fans can be objective.

Dumb trolls like Marco and Fire Ireland are just here to fill their boring lives by getting a rise out of someone.

***** Good job fellow bloggers not responding to Marco the instigator ****

Notice he quickly disappeared once he couldn't agitate anyone.

TruthhurTs steelers are not an easy win. The Dolphins will need to bring the same game they took to NYJ to win.

Winning is not a requirement for a Steven Ross GM.

MonteZonk, I really admire all of your posts. What color is your pubic hair?

No Woodshed,

Maybe I just don't like you. Wrap your brainwashed mind around that concept, hero.

TruthhurTs steelers are not an easy win.

No team is an easy win. This guy is really kind of dumb for an old geezer.

FIRE ROSS is back to hang with his loser peers.

No one said easy. It's a road game in tough environment. I don't think we have any easy wins coming at this point. I stated my reasons why I like the Phins to win but don't think these Steelers are a team to fear either.

I come here to take the pi$$, and to amuse myself.

What a lame excuse. Does it fool you? Because it doesn't fool anyone else.

Admit it, you are busted. Loser.

Glass half full = Obama will bring hope and change.

Glass half full = I can leave my child alone with Jerry Sandusky, he does work for charity.

Glass half full = Henne is a franchise quarterback.

Glass half full = Lamar Miller will be better than Bush.

Glass half full = Politicians are noble public servants.

Glass half full = Cops protect and serve.

Glass half full = To hell with education and Science, there's an invisible man in the sky who loves me.

Glass half full= a sweet young boy after a nice shower

You have been exposed over and over again as an uneducated imbecile. Please kill yourself and reduce the worlds population of losers!

I love when idiots say that Dan shouldn't be a Hall of Famer because he never one anything or that he wasn't the greatest.

Same rule applies to Barry Sanders I suppose, right?

Bill A, does your wife's vagynah resemble a raisin or a prune? Dry like sand too?

Truth looks for brotherhood among Dolphins fans.

...and this after I set him straight yesterday by pointing out how delusional he is.

Sense of community huh ?

Damn that's sad.

Even worse than being a bottom feeder and using possessive terms.

Attaching your ego to a group of uneducated millionaires that don't know you, or want to know you.

Bursting with pride when they win (which never happens against a good team).

Taking offense to people criticizing "your" team.

Like someone has insulted you personally.

Even hating certain members of the media because they never say anything positive about "your" team.

Deion Sanders, Heath Evans, Jamie Dukes those b a s t a r d s.

If hell freezes over and the Dolphins actually win another playoff game you'll parade around exclaiming "WE'VE WON". Then celebrate with a handful of bean dip so you can add to the spare tire even though "you've" won nothing.

Anyone who pays $65,785.34 for a sissy logo Dolphins jersey is a brother.

Sad.

or Fran Tarketon, Dan Fouts, Jim Brown, Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Sonny Jurgenson, George Blanda, Warren Moon, just to name a few.....HOF's with no rings

Fireross/troll I missed that part of you showing me anything. From what i saw as soon as I called you out you ran home to momma troll under the bridge or rock you came from. Or signed in as a different multi name troll. Let's see it what do you have? As far as the above goes it's just 100% non sense so what is there to address in that?

A man can be judged by the company he keeps. And you can't stay away.

I know Im the most guilty of this however...if WE don't feed the trolls they crawl back under that slimy rock they live under. The following is her own words saying as much. She is a poor loser that has nothing to show for her time on earth. Makes me believe in euthanasia for the mentally challenged....sad..Pity for her misery.

Well I am leaving now for the evening....last night she had a lot of fun using my name and posting her garbage. Know that I am gone for the night. I NEVER post after Midnight to 8am. Peace Dolfans.

Bill Arny,

If I'm an uneducated loser then you lost a debate to an uneducated loser, loser.

Still waiting for you to show me the quotes where I parroted left wing propaganda that is circulated via the left wing media.

Oh, that's right.

You never did.

Because you couldn't even if you were intelligent enough to try.

I provided evidence for my claims regarding your brainwashing.

I posted your exact words and then where they often get repeated, daily.

Instead you went off point on some rant about Noam Chomsky.

If you had ever seen the inside of a University, you'd know that in the debating world...you lost, big time.

You couldn't even muster a point. Kind of like The Dolphins against The Panthers and Patriots in the second half.

Wasn't there an ancient blogger that used to reference Noam Chomsky? That's not a question, but a statement. Things that make you go Hmmm.

It's past Billy Boys bed time.

I'll tear him a new one later.

Either he is a cop = dumb.

Or he just plays one in his mind = dumb, mentally ill.

I think he's a mall cop.

I'm with you Bill...these loser trolls have nothing... say nothing and bring nothing of value here. I got better things to do then talk their garbage non sense on a work night. Their intentions are transparent to me.

But I'll be back..choke down some liquid courage fireross see you later maybe then you'll think of something relevant. Not likely but all things are possible.

http://dolphinsindepth.blogspot.com/2007/11/dolphins-should-get-as-much-out-of.html

In fact that blog from 5-6 years ago pretty much mirrors what we see today. Could people have changed names?

Wow that Fire Ross Kill Martin Jail Pouncey guy sure is delusional. I remember those post with Bill A and him talking politics and Bill handed him his diaper to state it mildly. From what I recall FRKMJP couldn't even defend his position and then brought up Chomsky. That's when Arns exposed him for good. Regardless this is a football blog and FRKMJP has been on here for years for no other reason but to incite people. That really is a just reason for Armando to finally ban him and all his alias names. He starts trouble with every single person on here.

It ashame we don't have mental institutions in this country anymore. This FRKMJP guy appears to be a danger to society as a whole. He is in need of help.

HAHA. Bill was a prick then, he's a prick now. That much hasn't changed.

Baller, the way it went down is posted above. I almost never lose a debate, mostly because I don't attempt to debate subjects I know very little about. Go back and read the posts if you like, I did after the fact and it was the stuff of great comedy, a right wing parrot with no education, little intelligence and no debating skills going off in a million directions, refusing to stay on point, making claims and then failing to back them up when called upon to do so.

Chargers keys the the game, Mondo's post.

Page one.

Sorry, but when someone communicates things that you neither like, nor want to believe, that doesn't make them wrong and it certainly doesn't make them ill lol.

You're searching for reasons to discredit the messenger because you don't like the message.

Darkoak attempted the same approach the other day, and when I pointed it out to him it was beyond his comprehension.

The next day he used the same approach, replying to a comment from Bodine.

Then again, I'm on a football blog.

This isn't exactly a place where intellectuals gather.

Yesterday, TruthhurTs failed to grasp the ridiculous nature of referring to a sports team in possessive terms.

I spelled it out again at 11:38 here.

Case in point.

Of course this undermines interest for the delusional fan.

Kind of like telling a reality t.v. fan that reality t.v. is really staged.

"It never ceases to surprise me at the infinite capacity of the human mind to resist the introduction of useful knowledge" Thomas Raynesford Lounsbury

Are people crazy enough to think that fans won't use the words "WE" and "US"?

Clearly they don't understand the human psyche.

MIKE WALLACE = Leader and plays heart out

No Woodshed,

Maybe I just don't like you. Wrap your brainwashed mind around that concept, hero.

The feeling is mutual. I wouldn't pi$$ on you if you were on fire.

Salguero: Tannehill missed an open Brian Hartline deep down the left sideline. It would have been a TD. This QB's inability to connect deep is no longer a coincidence. It is a fact we've seen time and again over two seasons now.
=============================================================
Well Armando seeing is believing but not to some of the site GM's. This is an issue with playoff caliber teams and anyone who thinks that the Dolphin WR's will not be covered closer because the DB's do not have to respect the deep ball as much is delusional. It's an issue and correcting accuracy may not happen....

Another night of losers feeding the trolls and ruining the blog. They get suckered in every time. What they expect to get out of it beyond frustration and a waste of time is beyond me.

Lack of basic discipline I guess.

Half way through his second season, Tannehill is not a perfect, pro bowl QB. Still he is a lot better than most QB's taken in the first round recently - Locker, Ponder, Smith, Gabbert. Yet most of you want to whine ad nauseam about him - point out his flaws day after day as though he has no good points whatsoever.

Your standards and expectations are simply unrealistic.

Simon there are only a 4 more regular season games. The most important thing in today's NFL is to have a franchise QB or at least a QB that is accurate. A team without that can not win in the playoffs. Look around the league. T-hill has cleaned up things but the lack of accuracy might be an issue that's not going to be corrected.

Salguero: Tannehill missed an open Brian Hartline deep down the left sideline. It would have been a TD. This QB's inability to connect deep is no longer a coincidence. It is a fact we've seen time and again over two seasons now.
============================================================
The reason why Armando mentioned this is because this issue with T-hill is not going away. He has cleaned up other issues but the accuracy thing at this level will kill wins and a teams success. One can counter with all the positive attributes for T-hill but without being accurate he will not win against the better teams in the NFL.

Deep accuracy issues aside, Tannehill is improving overall. He's not a finished product, he's a second-year qb! If he's not consistently posting a rating in the high eighties/nineties next season, time to move on. To his credit, the coaching and o line haven't helped a whole lot. Tannehill has suffered hit after hit, yet gets right back up and hasn't missed a snap this season. He's a tough sob, you have to give him that. If the coaching staff did not expect such an inexperienced qb to carry the offense, we'd be seeing much better results, IMO.

tputz go play b ball
idiot
.
lol

Teams can go deep into the playoffs with average QB's (think Jets a few years ago with Sanchez).
Or even Flacco...his numbers are average across the board.

I am in awe watching Brady/Brees/Manning and even Wilson at how well they throw the ball downfield and extend the play.

I've said since day one that Tannehill is 'good' not 'great' and if good is good enough to be in the playoffs on a consistent basis then I'll be happy with that.

There are only a handful of great QB's in the entire world, we just had ours 20 years ago.

Tannehill is following the same career path as Chad Henne. He wins a few games but overall is a subpar QB.

How come no one on the Dolphins noticed Tannehill's accuracy problems BEFORE the draft?

Tannehill doesn't have accuracy problems. He has a 62.1% completion rate. That is above the league average. Now carry on...

let's get one thing clear...Tannehill is a better QB than Henne in almost every statistical category...and I don't think anyone on this blog wants Henne back under center.
