Mike Sherman defends abandoning the run

The Dolphins abandoned the run on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, seeing the nine runs he called in the first half not working all that well, basically abandoned the idea of running the ball in the second half.

The Dolphins called only three run plays in the second half.

And Sherman believes that was the way to go.

“I just did not feel at any point that of those 12 carries our longest run was three yards," Sherman said Monday. "We really haven’t had many explosive runs this year which is not good, we need to continue to build towards that.  A lack of productivity in the run game caused me to veer off into another direction."

And this is where the words sound fine but the logic is simply absent.

The run game wasn't working for the Dolphins so Sherman went in another direction.

Did he go in another direction when the passing game stunk? Or did he keep calling passing plays?

By abandoning the run, Sherman thought he was doing what was best for the Dolphins. Wrong. He was playing right into the hands of the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills wanted the Dolphins to pass the football. They were praying the Dolphins would pass. You know why?

The Bills lead the NFL in sacks. The Dolphins lead the NFL in sacks allowed. The only way the Bills were going to collect more sacks and build on the momentum those plays deliver is by having the Dolphins throw the football. And Sherman obliged.

Another thing: The Bills are not a good run-defense. They were ranked No. 26 in the NFL against the run. So by abandoning the run, Sherman was declining to attack the weakest part of the Bills defense.

And all this happened in a game where the score was 13-0 with over six minutes to play. So it is not as if the Dolphins were totally out of this game and needed to pass out of desperation.

Look, the Dolphins are passing team. I get that. They throw the football more than any other NFL team save one. Despite this, Sherman claims he believes in balance.

“Believe it or not, my history has always been with the run game," he said. "There is a definite place for it, as well as the pass game. You’re talking about post season play, people are going to defend what you do the best.  If you can’t keep them from having numbers to take away your run game by being able to throw it, then you’re going to have a tough time running it.  Because a of weather situations that you may face and the grunt and grind of it all you have to be able to run the football, I think to be successful.

"To be successful in the playoffs I believe this too and people are going to stop what you do best, if you’re a really good running team you can’t throw the football and capitalize on situations where there is an overpopulated box then you’re going to have a tough time too. I think you have to be able to do both and you have to be able to have balance."

To be able to do both you have to commit to both. The suggestion the Dolphins are committed to running the ball is a joke.

Running the ball requires persistence. It doesn't always work. It doesn't always work early. Teams that do it well stay with it.

The Dolphins don't stay with it. And not surprisingly, they don't do it well.

Oscar a village in cuba called.........they are missing their IDIOT!!!!!!!!

If Jeff Ireland remains as GM and is given once again the luxury of picking in next year's draft, we will be in again for another disappointing season.

They are very lonely people. Sad, but true. Some bloggers can post the most gross and vile crap about spitting and swallowing and mama nonsense and still those guys will post with them. That is how desperate they are for attention and something to do. Yes, including those you mentioned.

The why do respectable bloggers like MIT, BIll A, Phins78, DarrylDunphy and DC talk to these losers? Why even give Marco or Sam I am the time of day????????

Oh yeah. How Ireland still has a job is just mind boggling.

Typical troll/pretend fan mode of operation...ohhhh you know they railed on and on as always about how bad Ireland was for not resigning Jake Long and how cheap Ross was but not one of them will admit it today. See they never have to man up and take responsibility/accountability for their words.

I guess that this blogging crap just aint for me. its time for me to go away and leave the marco's. Oscars and sam's of the world to their own peril.

There was nothing to do. We were fukkking paralyzed.

MARCO=TROLL, GREG and BILL A are gone forever.....peace my friends!

But of course you've been here for years and will be here for more years. You are a lonely sad sack just like the rest of them.

I have only fukkked 2 confirmed Lesbians in my Life. After they came like a Cow, wetting the bed thoroughly, they looked at my dikkk disgustingly.(you liked this one? I have some more of these)

(the Bible Thumper is mad but interested)

Ireland's resume' boasts more draft busts than any GM ever and 5 years of a below average team. Not to mention the Dez Bryant debacle, and the coaching mess.

And what about Reggie Bush...who saw his stats from yesterday with everything on the line for the Lions??? 12 carries for 34 yards, 2 recepts for 10 yards and with a fumble lost.

fins need to upgrade from lamar miller and Daniel Thomas this ofce got worse when reggie bush left that why the bills swept us te bills had problems defending bush miller and Thomas are easy to defend they run where the run call is they cant make there own runs like bush did we need a running back that whats to be great miller and thomas remind me of Ronnie brown they don't have a passion to be great lamar miller would be a great player if he ran more violently he runs scared like he cant wait to go down he doesn't seem like he wants to get on a foot race with a db he tried against the bengals and slowed down and got stripped we need a great back and an oline. more then anything else.

The thing about Ireland....

He has a better job that all of you. You can knock him all you want but he attained greater heights before he was 30 than the rest of you will attain in your lifetime.

AppleJackoff, run out of handiwipes?

Did you notice that NE had their 2 rookie DBs in their Game yesterday. And our 2 ones? MIA.

According to his writing, APPLEJACKSON appears to be a Redneck.

Jimmy Cefalo said the only lineman that should return next season is Pouncey. He wants 4 new OL AND 2 new RB's. he said the RB's cant block or run. YIKES!

Lamar Miller is not fast enough to be a scat back and not strong enough to block. He is a tweener.

Dashi was wrong again.

Maybe if Gillisle had been in the Game he could have picked up some of those blitzes. I've seen him done it before.

Nope, just showing the buffoons here they criticize those far more accomplished then them. They lack perspective. Ireland can fail and get fired, you still have to give him credit for attaining a dream job that few can attain. Certainly none of the under-educated low wage workers here.

i bet Oscar steals fom the government like all Cubans in Miami do punk

bounty you must be gay bringing stuff like that up

AppleJackson has brillo hair. And that musty stench.

Maybe this Offensive System is too complicated for most Players in the NFL now.

I go shopping at two different Publix's. All the cashiers are Haitian. Usually around 20 to 30. Some tough looking, some nasty looking, some kinda cute. Either way...I'm 52 and most of them accept my invitations. It is so easy to bang them...a cheap dinner, a club, cook for them, they strip right down with no hang ups. Definitely want to use a wrapper.

Well, its a good thing TannePuke knew the plays before he got here. Could you imagine if he didnt? Buffalo is a better team than us. Even with their backup QB!!!

Kristy doesn't blog here anymore. He left in shame. You might try to locate him on another blog. You have no fans here.

I have not seen Craig M posting lately, has he been vanished or is he posting under another name?

Well, her being absent is a great thing! Mouth kept whining & crying bout Mando blogging about the Cogs/Martin story.

When givin a chance to discuss it privately, Mouth declined & Mando basically embarrassed the daylights out of him on the blog. It was beautiful! Essentially told him all he does is whine & can't read & he's welcome to stay if he wants to continue to misread his blogs. Funny!

She'll be back when it blows over or he thinks people forget the incident. But, that was a day not to be forgotten by the bloggers here.

Fear not, he is in the weeds, lurking in the shadows, taking notes of what you all say to use it against you at a later date.

So we run 10-15 more times and break a couple 10 yarders and that's supposed to make the difference? That woulldve been a winning formally? Those guys with there ears pinned back, they stuffed the 12 run plays too. What thy should've done was roll out the QB and run quick 3 step slats and screens, but what do I know.

This is not a playoff team. To much inconsistent performances. I have been hoping that they tank the season for a while so that Ireland can get fired.

Ireland should be fired for the Dez Bryant embarassment and the handling of Incognito vs J Martin.

Ireland should be fired if team doesn't make the play playoffs after
spending $280 Million.

Ireland should be fired just because...

Mike Sherman knows the running backs stink. Its obvious. So he tried the pass but Tanny couldnt deliver.

Yep, the running backs are smelly, weak, underfed, under exercised, under the bus, under the little tiny (four2) cars. I think Granny in her wheel chair could knock Thomas down. Miller ain't much better.
We could also use a bit more speed on kickoff returns. We had a chance to break a couple of big ones on Sunday.
We can blame the oline all day long but sometimes a back has to change the game.

Did we ever bring in an extra OLman to help against their pass rush? Did we ever put in an extra OLman to help with the run? I didn't see it if it happened. But once again this is an in-game adjustment you do when things aren't working as planned.

Talk to any military tactician, before a battle, plans are drawn up, procedures are put in place, time schedules are set, and once the battle begins, most of that preparation goes out the window and thinking on the run becomes the rule of the day.

This coaching staff appears to me to be highly inflexible. Incapable of coming up with contingencies when things don't go right. Planning for blue skies all the time. As for my money, give me a coach that thinks on his feet, that has an answer for everything the other guy throws at you. So far this staff has shown me that they are very short in that area.

As predicted, plenty of pi$$ed-off fans are expressing their displeasure here in the aftermath of one of the most disappointing losses in recent Dolphins history. Most fans thought the bad was behind the Dolphins Sunday morning. By Sunday afternoon, all the old questions were back.

No player or coach seemed to be ready to handle what Buffalo was dishing out. But, of course, we have seen this throughout the 2013 season. We can't seem to get to a place where we can decide whether to love or hate this bunch.

Attributed to John Madden is the insightful quote, "winning is the best deodorant." We'll see if a victory Sunday against the detested Jets can enhance this season with a more pleasing fragrance.

One of the worst performances I can remember.Sherman never makes adjustments during the game. They should have ran a 2 minute offense in the second half just to change things up.At least try some type of misdirection. Maybe a designed run by Tannehill? I'd be happy if they just tried anything different. We lost to Carolina,New England and twice to Buffalo because the offense was shutdown in the second half.

You mean the running game didn't work after running the same exact running play nearly every time? Using the same exact cadence that is specially reserved for the run? I'm amazed.

The Dolphins are soft. Next year, please try to become a smash mouth team. The finesse stuff is not working.

Sherman is a moron. He should go bras-dessus-bras-dessous with Ireland. He's so stupid that make me ashame. Everything that they did didnt work against the Bills not only the running game. They were simply too stupid to plan the game as they should.
This team doesnt deserve to go to the playoffs. The worst OL, one of the worst teams running the ball, a mediocre passing game, the worst GM, one of the worst staffs.
So it's a miracle that we're still in a position to qualify for the PO.
Philbin didnt quote anyone this time ? What a jerk !

I know that you agree, but please stop trying to "explain away" Sherman's shortcomings. The guy sticks, he is an over the hill has been who was SUPPOSED to shepard Ryan Tannehill to the NFL level. IMHO Sherman has failed at that, plus he is a poor play caller who cannot even settle on a running back after 16 games (Hint: Lamar Miller is better of two average backs). Besides Jeff Ireland, there is NOBODY that I would love to see fired in the New Year more than Mike Sherman. By the way, Tannehill should want that as well...if he wants to develop into an NFL quality QB.

everybody but the coaching staff knew they needed to make corrections in the 2nd half. I'm giving THill a bag of audibles and Sherman a sketch showing how to execute a screen pass and a roll out for Christmas. Merry Christmas humiliated PhinFans(I'm One)

The fact is the running and passing game was not working in Buffalo. You can't abandon the run and become one dimensional. That is what Sherman did this week and it allowed the Bills Defense to become blitz happy and they swarmed THILL all day. They knew the OLine was suspect and that the RB's can't pass block. that was proven over, and over and over again on Sunday.

Sherman needed the running game to slow down the pass rush and keep the defense honest. It should have enabled more play action passing, which Sherman uses sparingly and that is a HUGE mistake.

The running game should have worked against this poor rushing defense. It didn't because Sherman applied zero creativity to the runnig game. Their shotgun hand off is telegraphed miles away and any defense is going to stop it.

In the rain Sherman should have expected sloppy conditions and therefore called for the I formation using Clay as a FB and Thomas as the downhill rusher. Instead Sherman stuck with lone tailback formations and the rotation of Miller/Thomas. Miller is not effective between the tackles and has rarely shown he can break the big one. Thomas should have been the featured back in those game conditions.

Sherman failed this offense last week. He can't allow that to happen again. But his arrogance and unwillingness to say he fuc-ed up will prevent this team from consistently winning.

If Sherman ran the ball on every first and second down he would have likely averaged 2 - 2.5 yards per play. that is not a great rushing average but I think it would have likely panned out to about that.

If that played out the Fins would have found themselves in 3rd & 6 and 3rd & 5 situations in most series. That is much more managable than abandoning the run all together and passing on 1st & 10, 2nd & 10 and 3rd & 10.

Sherman called very few 2 and 3 step drop passes (i.e. slants and WR screens). Instead they abandon the run, constantly working from the Shotgun or 7 step drops and calling for long routes to develop. This allows the pass rushers to pin their ears back and go after THILL.

Who are we kidding. The Steelers should have one that game if not for stepping out of bounds, and we were one play away from being the laughing stock of the league in the Patriots game. This team has no identity. Cant run, cant pass protect and special teams is a joke. This is all on the coaches. Let them go!

Why run the ball if the running backs continue to get hit 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage on every play? At least with the passing game we had a chance. The problem was we dropped around 7 passes when Tannehill was able to get the ball out. Hey can Dion Jordan play Offensive Tackle?
