PFF Tuesday: Relive the Buffalo nightmare

No frills today, folks. It's Tuesday. It's the day this blog turns to the folks at ProFootballFocus.com for their tape review of the last game.

The last game was a nightmarish 19-0 loss to the Bills.

This is the review of the nightmare:

Left guard Sam Brenner played just 20 snaps, but clocked in with a -4.8 grade, doing poor work in the run game (-1.5) and even poorer work in pass blocking (-3.4). He was replaced by Nate Garner and its going to be interesting to see this week which of the two starts against the Jets.

RB Daniel Thomas got more snaps than Lamar Miller for just the third time this season, and second if you don’t count the game Miller suffered a concussion.

TEs Michael Egnew (three snaps) and Dion Sims (11 snaps) combined for just 14 snaps, as the Dolphins were in 11 personnel for most of the game.

Ryan Tannehill dropped back 34 times. He was under pressure on 17 of those dropbacks.

TE Charles Clay caught passes against Stephon Gilmore, Leodis McKelvin, Jim Leonhard, and Jairus Byrd.

It was a rough day for the defensive line. Cam Wake (-2.5) and Jared Odrick (-3.1) had their worst graded games of the season and Olivier Vernon also had a poor game (-3.5).

MLB Dannell Ellerbe has been trending in the wrong direction. He also had his worst graded game of the season (-5.5), and worst in run defense (-3.7) as well.

DE Dion Jordan played just 14 snaps, most coming when Olivier Vernon needed a breather on a long drive. Coach Joe Philbin mentioned last week that Jordan is getting around 40 snaps a game. Not even close.

Despite giving up the biggest gain of the game in tight coverage to Robert Woods, Nolan Carroll allowed just two other catches on six targets for 27 yards.

Bills QB Thad Lewis was able to attack Phillip Wheeler and Ellerbe. They combined to allow five catches on six targets for 58 yards. These guys were supposed to be better in coverage than Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett. Not this day.

By way of reminder, as fans continue to ask about this, the Dolphins must win or tie against the Jets and need help to make the playoffs. These are the scenarios:

Miami clinches a playoff spot with ...

1)    MIA win + BAL loss or tie OR

2)    MIA win + SD win OR

3)    MIA tie + BAL loss + SD loss or tie OR

4)    MIA tie + BAL tie + SD tie

What the two games with the Bills showed me is, if there is to be a team to inherit the throne of New England, it will be the Bills not the Dolphins. The Bills have strong Offensive and Defensive lines, what you need to build championships and, very good running backs, that can dominate a game. I think the missing pieces for the Bills are a lot easier to come by than what the Dolphins need.

Really? No offense, but consider the caliber of offenses they faced in 2012 vs 2013. We've easily played more big boy offenses in 2013.

Also, in 2012, OC's anticipated facing the 2011 5th rated run defense. So naturally, they may have game planned to pass more heavily than run in 2012.

So much more I could add, but this is a blog, I'm not trying to write a book.

This run defense has now been exposed. They can no longer live off of reputation.

What happened to my well thought out post? Ok, here's the short version: Philbin & Co. are not getting the job done.

There's no talent on the team. Or certainly not enough talent.

Brandon Marshall for Michael Eggnew?? WTF??

The team is sitting in contention for the wild card, the players can get it done if they are put in a position to win. Our coordinators aren't doing that game in game out. Our flaws personel wise are glaring and our head coach can't make that adjustment at halftime.

Surprisingly with all that has gone on we're in wild card contention, that tells me there is some talent in the team.

Darkoak, the wins came because of the players stepping up, usually last minute heroics. The problem is, you can't count on those types of plays every Sunday.
I view the wins as winning in spite of the poor coaching.

Sorry to sound so negative but I've seen enough to tell me Philbin was another bad choice.

Thats correct, but in 2011 he was +3 in turnover ratio. Look I guess its a pointless arguement, Moore is never going to be the guy here as long as Philbin and Sherman are here.

Ireland blew the draft.
He had tons of material to work with, money and draft picks.
We should have clinched by now.
Passing on Keenen Allen and CorDarell Patterson was asinine.

I agree cocoajoe coaching is what's holding us back. And some bad personel moves. Sherm is number one reason for a number of the loses.

Good stuff. I have a bottle of the Glenmorangie Lasanta and I picked up a bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask yesterday.

I also have a 33yr old bottle of Glengarioch for special occasion. I may have some if we make the playoffs.

Thanks to all the bloggers that took part in the Dolphins In Depth fantasy football. Next year I promise to actually show up for the draft, lol.

If Thill had a Dez Bryant and a Murray in the backfield he would have a rating better than Romo's, I don't doubt. IF we go into next year without a decent RB or a big boy WR, then we may be in for another rocky ride.

Marshall was a better fit for Thill. Where was the logic in getting a deep threat, when our QB, isn't there on the deep balls. Look I've supported Wallace up to a point, but he's so one dimensional, he can't help us short. He also pulled a Ted Ginn move on Buffalo by falling to the ground almmost like QB slide, it was for 8 yards and I think we came up short on two runs to get the first. We must have a big WR, or give Keller a tryout, see where he is at and give him a medical and insentive based contract.

Slangevar !!!

Quick question, did anyone here go to Cam Cameron's draft show back in 2007 ?

What we need is some proven talent on this Oline. Ireland can't seem to draft Olineman so we need to got he FA route.

The 2 names that standout are Brandon Albert and Alex Mack. I would pay both and move Pouncey over to LG. That would allow us to draft a solid RT in either the 1st or 2nd rd.

This strategy would allow Ireland to draft what he knows, D-Lineman! We need to get some DT's, preferably the kind that can play DE or NT in a 3-4. We can fire Coyle and bring in either Rex Ryan or Wade Phillips and get this team to play to full potential.

Keller's not talking to us. He's rehabbing some where else.
He's done!

Good chat here as always. Like everyone else... was shocked to see such an egg laying up in Buffalo.

Weird how the upcoming game really will impact the future of the franchise.

Philosophically, I don't love how football is played today... I'm more of a three yards and a cloud of dust fan.

That's not Miami's style... and we saw that again Sunday. We're soft.

I do think THill has an upside. Don't lose faith. I like his personality -- unflappable.

ok, Woodshed, if we make the Playoffs, I'll buy another one of those bottles, even though I can't afford it and we'll toast it together.

It might be that of our last 3 Head Coaches, Philbin is the best one.

Letting Dansby go = dumb dumb dumb.

Letting Bush go = dumb dumb dumb.

This team would have been in the play offs with either one of those guys.

To all the positive kitties,
Embrace the suck!

The QB sucks. Misses wide open receivers and slow to get rid of the ball.

Ireland can't seem to draft Olineman so we need to got he FA route.

Posted by: The Woodshed Gang | December 24, 2013 at 01:39 PM

Yeah, he cant draft QB's or RB's or WR's either LOL

My god you people are all truly sad and very bored to just come on here for HOURS and say absolutely nothing. Nothing but toads. As soon as Miami beats up on the Jets you losers will all disappear again.

The more I see the more credit I have to give to Bill Parcells. He had Ireland and Sparano WINNING!

With the player talent we now have, I think Soprano and the staff he had would have done much better this year!!!!! We would not (imo) have been totally embarrassed and humiliated by the Bucs and Bills.

Posted by: oscar canosa | December 24, 2013 at 01:59 PM

Not saying much

Cam 1-15

Tony T 25-31.... Can Philbin go 16-16 next week ?

Phinmanski, thats the dumbest post yet. Congrats

canadien Mark,

Your boy Tanne was pathetic. Every year he goes north and gets shut out .. lol .. canadiens dont know football. Stick to ice fishin and ice hockey lol

It can't be what McKinnie is saying that Buffalo knew the snap count and that's why they were getting a good jump. Nahh, no Coaching staff would permit somebody to do something that simple to them.

I'm sick and tired of Sherman, and his excuses, and others who accept his excuses including Philbin.

Sherman is very experienced....AS A LOSER.

What is his career record? As HC or OC?

Big fat stinking stubborn clueless LOSER

What happened Oscar, back off the bandwagon cuz we lose 1 game in December? Loser

Where is he now?

CMON Phins

YOU are no fan, your a toad so jump away

Where is he now?

Posted by: ExposingTheFraud | December 24, 2013 at 02:27 PM

By my account, he is STILL the GM, and your still a hater

@ 2:19 I meant Sparano!

Weird, but actually thinking how maybe I miss him and his fist pumping.

Sherman cant make chicken salad out of chicken. The team has no talent. Wallace isnt a real #1 WR and Hartline isnt a #2. The QB and the RB's are way below average.

Get a life, im just saying

Probably 2, toad, 2 probably.

You Suck pal. You have no talent.

Oscar, Really? So Negative. Really? Cmon create them positive waves. Don't buy into it

Who was the one telling us how good Miller would be?

I don't see it happening. I don't see anymore upside to him. He will break some runs, but he isn't a #1 back, maybe not even a #2 back.

Stop eating toads man,

Not good mojo.

Guys our team has no upside we can't run and we can't stop the run and we can't pass block either ,,,,where I come from that spells doom

Another year and another disappointment

Merry Christmas all

Does Ireland know that RB's, TE's and OLinemen he drafts need to know how to block?

Stop eating toads man,

Not good mojo.

Well, Ross was too cheap to sign Vontae Leach, Reggie Bush and Jake Long so the running game stinks.
