Ross: 'We're going to look at everything'

Steve Ross came out of the Dolphins locker room after Sunday's 20-7 loss and basically announced no one's job is safe.

"I'm making no comment on that," he stated before adding, "We're going to look at everything."

My question to Ross was whether he knew 100 percent he was definitely going to retain or fire anyone -- including general manager Jeff Ireland and coach Joe Philbin.

"I'm disappointed," he said before that. "What else can I tell you? For everybody, you know? I have a lot to think about.

"I'm going to look at everything. When you're disappointed you don't make decisions based on the fly. You have to give it a lot of thought and go look at everything."

Ross said he was feeling pretty good about his team two weeks ago when they were 8-6 and playing Buffalo and New York next. He expected to be in the playoffs.

"Of course we were. Sure," he said. "To have something like this -- to lose the last two games -- I'm disappointed for everyone."

It's clear Ireland, the team's GM, has been in a tenuous situation this year. There have been times he's been seemingly on the outs. Ross a couple of months ago told him he was safe.

But now after this collapse Ireland's status is again uncertain. Team insiders have believed that Philbin, who helped the Dolphins navigate through the NFL scandal and reach to the precipice of a playoff berth, seemed safe.

Now, that is also in question because the Dolphins failed terribly the final two games of the season against teams that had losing records going into the meeting with Miami. The Buffalo loss last week was bad. This 20-7 loss to Jets was worse.

Ross was apparently ready to excuse the first. But the second?

"The team's played well. We had one bad game," he said.

But today?

"You expect to win."

Arizona has an absolutely brilliantly green field. Georgeous.

The best thing we fans can do for the next season is to take a valium every Sunday and forget about football for the years to come, until Ross sells the team.

My apologies sir. Maybe I should learn to scroll past your posts. I have learned my lesson.

Wow, the Chargers are laying a bigger egg than the fins. They are losing to the Chief's backups. 20 of the 22 starters for the Chiefs are not playing. Amazing!

Philbin completely outcoached by Rex Ryan and Marrone the last two weeks.

Thill completely outplayed by two rookie QB's.

Today Thill had all the time to throw and look what happened... surprise surprise.

Last two games Thill was 30-67-284-1Td 3INTS. Thats not a franchise QB folks and please don't give me the 2nd year QB excuse, two rookies showed Thill up to be the real man he is.

We have to go QB in the 1st and FA QB.

promichael and Orlando thanks. I am also happy that the real DOLFANS know who the trolls are....they are most likely the same person. They hate the Dolphins and come here to ruin the blog. I do my best to ignore them.

I think Mike Shula is the answer for HC. I think maybe if Shula can fix the line and run game that he can fix Tannehill.

It's crazy to give up on T-hill. You guys are so wrong like always...you can judge a player after 2 years. Who we can judge after 2 years are the coaches. T-hill only lost his most consistent WR in the first quarter. He only had Wallace slip and give up the INT today at the 20. He just can't do it all.

I believe Miami spent the most $ on free agency in the NFL this year, am I correct?

That formula still doesn't work.

Marco,

The blowhards from Canada are the guys who really think they know it all. They are better at reading accounting spread sheets I'm sure.

My deepest apologies sir. Maybe I should learn to scroll past your posts. Have learned my lessons.

I DEMAND THAT WE PUT MORE ORANGE IN THE UNIFORMS AND RETURN THE ORANGE STRIPE BACK ON THE HELMET ASAP !!!!!

Other than that the finish to the season is what I expected all along. 8-8 is just about were Omar Kelly predicted we would be.

Same old Dolphins, at least we won't get slaughtered next week.

One has to wonder if Bill Cowher took this job would he still keep Tannehill as his starter. If we recall, he called Tannehill robotic a few weeks ago. My guess if Cowher takes the job, he wants a new QB. I guess it also makes you wonder if he does not believe in Tannehill, then why would he come here?

In years past I would look forward to the draft. Not this time. I just have a feeling Ross will keep Ireland and he'll screw up the draft once again.
What kind of idiot moves up to the 3rd pick of the draft and takes a player at a position that is already the stongest position on the team?
More of the same next year.

I would like to see thill have competition next year, being aaron murray ,ryan mallett if he is a free agent or a drafted rookie.Ive never been a fan of that kid

Bill A = Troll, a nasty person.

If you believe he is anything else well then you are naive and stupid.

Bill A, claims to be an expert on security and he thinks you and I are the same dude.

Bill also knows me as YG, Daytonna, Cadeville on and on and on. Bill is really a nice guy just a little amped and a complete idiot when it comes to football.

It is hard to give up on a QB that has 32 games under his belt....darn the Panthers waited until Cam's 3 rd season and he has finally got it right. However TH has shown a poor deep game and this caching staff could not fix it in 2 yrs. Is it the coach or the QB?

I wouldn't think of replacing Tannehill unless JOHNNY MANZIEL is still available when we pick in the late teens.

Well said Bill. I do not agree with all of the posts here but I respect everyone's opinion. None of us are experts here, we just have opinions. Respect others' opinions without insulting them when you disagree. It is called being an adult.

Bill A.,

Well why trade T-hill, he does not have enough value. He's at best a back up quarterback in the NFL.

Marco, people project in others what they see most in themselves. So if Bill A is busy calling others a troll, it's because that is his behavior.

Simple as that.

This is all on the coaches to come out 2 weeks after beating the Pats. We also beat the Colts and Bengals. That tells me they have the talent but these guys are misused and the play calling is awful. Coyle is our new Olivadotti. And Sherman is no better.

i think miami should stay away from texas a&m quarterbacks.

This shouldn't be hard. The architect of that AAA Chiefs squad beating the Chargers right now is available. According to one tweet six days ago, Bill O'Brien wouldn't be opposed to a reunion with Pioli if he moved to the NFL. Hire those two immediately.

Well it's wait and see time now but when you couple the Martin / Cogs scandal with the collapse at the end of the season for a team that spent a $100 million because they were in dire need of improvement, you would think it would be an easy decision.

This team is losing support in droves in fact many would be fine with it moving.

Ross said he wanted to bring this franchise back to it's glory days, epic fail so far.

There has been one constant since Ross had been here, Jeff Ireland. Time to cut ties IMHO.

Have been a Philbin supporter all season but now am second guessing his leadership abilities.

He looked lost and not in control the last two games...not leading, not talking into his headset, not gathering the players and motivating them to victory....nothing!

If Ross is looking at everything he needs to seriously consider cleaning out Ireland & Philbin.

I realize how disruptive this would be to the players, but after watching how this team has performed the last month I feel that Philbin has lost the team and the players are seeking a true leader.

Bill A wants Mike Shula.... Bill please stop now. It took you two year to discover Thill isn't the real deal. watch football long enough and you can see it, or not in your case.

Mike Shula is then yet another rookie HC, look how these rookies Hc's have done and you let me know if you can see a pttern emerge ?

Saban=losing record
Cam=losing record
Sporano=losing record
Philbin=losing record.

See anything Bill, or will you need more help, as you did Thill you stubborn old goat ?

well, we know o'brien can motivate a team with nothing to play for, and we know philbin can't motivate a team with everything to play for.

FINFanFoster, Tannehill really , we spent 60 million on a receiver that got open all season and Tanneturd could reach him or over threw him , he blew two very easy TDs today I am absolutelty sure I could of made, and ATTENTION everyone else!!!!!!!! Until Ireland Goes, no real Coach or QB will come near this team , this whole coaching staff has to go period , how do you come out that flat after beating the Patriots , our head coach said he don `t believe in rah rah speeches, or taking our team to motivating movies, and it showed these last two games , and Ireland he`s a clue for you when you have a Reggie Bush on your team ,. your number one scorer and yardage leader , you don`t get rid of him you find more great players to compliment him you fu&king idiot!!!!!!

All Ross has to do is look at other teams that play there backups and beat other teams starters like kc is doing to San Diego. Miami's starters have trouble beating other teams backups and that falls on the GM and Coaches.

Promichael I don't want to trade TH. TH will be our starter in 2014 no matter what we do in the draft. If we have a new coaching staff hopefully they can fix the deep ball issues. Remember that TH won a few games this year mostly by himself. All Im saying is that as presently coached in this system he is not the guy.

Great point and I agree. That is what I am saying. Ireland has his share of blame but Philbin is more at fault in my opinion. Like you said the fact that this team beat the Colts, the Bengals, the Patriots, the Chargers, and Steelers and then turns around and loses to the lowly Bills and Jets tells me that coaching is more to blame for this debacle.

You guys criticizing T-hill are just unreasonable dopes. I'd rather listen to my dog tell me about the talent on this team. It's coaching that gives you inconsistent play, bad calls and regression. This was a choke job plain and simple. That FB dive from Clay was riduculous after it failed a couple weeks ago. The play calling from Sherman is so predictable and vanilla most of the time.

Either you have a qb or you don't. I do not agree with the Tannehill COMPETITION talk.
More often, than not, it breeds qb controversy with both being medocre to good at best.

Remember, Shula ended WOODSTOCK with Marino?

When having 2 qb's usually you do not even have one.

DDW you are so right

i think miami should stay away from texas a&m quarterbacks.

Posted by: austin | December 29, 2013 at 06:29 PM

Especially Doug Flutie clones....Manziel will be a journeyman QB just like Flutie. and he has off the field issues no way we draft that after Cogs!!

I would never DRAFT A QB to PUSH MY STARTER.

I damn sure would draft one to replace him though.

If the Browns fire Chudzinski he would be a vast improvement at least at Offensive Coordinator, possibly even head coach. I'm not impressed with Philbin, Ireland, and Sherman. Tannehill is not an improvement over Henne...at least Henne has a brain. Tannehill consistently over and under-throws his receivers, nor does he have the pocket-presence to run when necessary.

This team needs a total overhaul unfortunately, so we're screwed whether Ross fires everyone and starts fresh or keeps the current staff and continue on the road to mediocracy.

I put this really on Ireland. He's the one who ruined the run defense by signing Ellerbe and Wheeler. He's the one who ruined the running game by not strengthening the OL when anyone with an IQ over 1 could see it was the weakest part of the team at the end of last year, and also did not get a good RB. He's the one who keeps signing and drafting turnstiles on the OL. He's also the one who drafted Tanneshrill, who regressed so poorly the last 2 games it's apparent he will never be a SB winning QB. He has all kinds of time to throw today, which just gave him more time to throw INTs.

Tony dungy Gm
Dan marino HC
Jason Taylor DC

All Ross has to do is ask himself a few questions:
With the current GM, will draft choices be better next year or more disappointments?
Will game attendance improve next year with the same coaches and GM?
Will this team make the playoffs and possibly a SB run?

Very simple if Ross is honest with himself

Needs to clean house. Play calling was terrible this year. you have a QB that can run and there was not one designed play to throw off defenses. Jordon was an awful pick at three, Lacy was available late in the draft and reggie bush should have been retained. ireland should have been canned after calling Bryant's mom a prostitute, and then goes to recruit a new coach while sparano is still the head coach. CLEAN HOUSE ROSS. Start with GM Coaches and QB. he can't throw an accurate pass or a deep pass. CLEAN HOUSE!!!!!!!!

Mr. Ross should clean house. You judge a coaching staff by how they maximize their talent and how the game plan against the opposition and then make adjustments during the game. This coaching staff has consistently not gotten the most out of the talent they have, and their in game adjustments are terrible.

Sam i am ....russel wilson was drafted 3 round to be competition to matt flynn ,and looked what happened,THE BEST MAN WON....

Bill,

As I calm down after the game and reflect on the season, I say let's give TH another season to correct his problems. He did show some flashes this year. Endured about 60 sacks this year and had no running game.

I would bring in a 3rd round QB like Aaron Murray, as a back up plan in case Tannehill is not the answer. You have to have a plan B.

Pennington QB coach

At least Manziel has fire and balls. Hell, he got kicked out of Mannings football camp.

Takes big balls to piss off the Mannings. Love this kid!

All we need is a new QB. Everything will be fine then.

Posted by: TruthhurTs | December 29, 2013 at 06:22 PM

Look he stays because no-one give you anything for him in a trade. The best option is go after a new HC and Oc, who bring in a guy they want and tell Thill go out and get it. Moore will be traded or cut, he has a cap friendly element to letting him go.

Thill is nowhere near where he needs to be on his accuracy over 10 yards, as for the 20+ his stats are some of the worst in the NFL .

He was outplayed today by Geno Smith, passing running and leading... Geno Smith and Thad Lewis outplayed Thill.

Henne had a game against the Jets where his rating was 120 and we won the game. Thill had a huge rating against the Pats, then completely blowns it against weaker teams.

Consistency is yet another of Thills problems, the guy like his coach is completely in over his head. the slide on 3rd and 21 was very telling, you fight for it, the season is on the line, look at the effort Geno Smith had, with nothing but pride tp play for... Thill makes me SICK !!!

Roberto Carlos punter coach

You don't accidentally beat some of the best QB's in the league. My question to Philbin is what are you going to do about it? My opinion is these coordinators have to go and if he's not willing to do that he has to go...I want experienced accomplished coordinators. With Black Monday looming...there's got to be some good guys out there.

I am not qualified to run an NFL franchise and neither is anyone else posting here. That said, I have been folowing this team since I was a little kid during the glory days of the early seventies and I've had just about enough of the endless cycle of staggering mediocrity...seven, eight wins, a middling draft pick that they'll blow on some nobody, obvious glaring holes that never get filled (like these RBs and the OL...who looked at those spots in August and said "OK we're set there"?) and of course (at best) uncertain QB play.

Quick, name the five best skill position players the Dolphins have had since the end of the 1995 season: (tick tick tick)...yeah, right? There's old Dan, Ricky Williams, Ronnie Brown, maybe Pennington and...uh....see what I mean? That's the best they could do in eighteen seasons???? I mean come on already, when is this team going to find themselves a talent evaluator that has a clue? When is this team going to find themselves an exciting football player who can get the damn rock in the end zone? There's bad and there's boring but bad AND boring is a lethal combo IMO.

peter,

That is right. If this team had enough talent to beat the Chargers, Colts, Bengals, Steelers, and Patriots. The coaching staff should have been able to put this team in a position to win 1 game against bottom dwellers like the Bills and Jets in a must win situation. All they needed was 1 win against those teams and they would have been in the playoffs.

Nice story for Steelers.

Great to see Big Ben make the playoffs.

Now there is a QB.

As I stated earlier In my opinion TH will be the starter in Sept 2014. I think a new staff would draft or FA a QB just in case TH doesn't improve. Your post above is 100% correct. 60 sacks, no run game, no OL and poor scheme/coaching. For a guy that has played QB for 3 yrs TOTAL.

tannehill can be a serviceable starter in the right system, but nothing more. staying with him might yield, under the best circumstances, a few playoff berths with early round exits a la fiedler or pennington. is this really what the organization aspires to? they need to take a long, hard look at what they have with him, where they want to go, and what they are satisfied with.

WOW???!! even the chargers are blowing it to 2nd string scrubs of KC....Nobody wants to go to the playoffs apparently....in a year where parity rules, the dolphins still suck....LMAO

Posted by: Sam I Am | December 29, 2013 at 06:38 PM

yes he does have fire....but he got kicked out of Mannings camp for the very reason he will not make it in the NFL....off the field issues...he was out drinking all night and was late for practice!! He would be a good Raider!

Bill A.,

It could turn out that T-hill is the starter for 2014, you just might be correct but I would open the competition up for the starting QB job and let Matt Moore compete, draft a QB in the 2nd round and then use T-hill as a back up to Moore. Bill A. teaching or coaching an NFL QB to go deep with accuracy is not easy. It's like teaching a pro tennis player to be accurate with his serve. At a certain stage in a pros life one can only teach certain things. Having accuracy on the deep ball is most difficult to teach...
