The Dolphins world according to Joe Philbin

Joe Philbin had his season-ending press conference on Monday. It had its interesting moments. It had its head-scratching moments.

Philbin's evaluation of the 2013 season and his evaluation of the team are underway but his message on each seemed unpolished. The coach, you see, believes the season was nothing grand ...

"It was average. We were 8-8. It was an average season," he said. "There's areas we need to improve starting with me. 8-8 is not where this franchise wants to be, needs to be or should be.

"We need to make changes, adjustments, tweaks, additions, deletions."

And yet, in the next breath, Philbin said the Dolphins are close to reaching their goals of winning a championship.

"We're not that far away," he said. "We're close."

Philbin's logic is that the team was 8-6 and a victory away from the postseason tournament. No, they didn't win either game at season's end, but he still believes that constitutes being close to some degree.

Look, the Dolphins are not close. They have the potential to be a good team but it is clear this coaching staff could not get the players to perform up to that potential. That's a problem.

And I don't see how a team that needs a virtually complete offensive line rebuild (outside of Mike Pouncey), a running back, and addressing of linebacker problems, can be considered close. I don't see how a team whose offensive coordinator failed to significantly improve his unit and whose offensive line coach failed to keep his unit from being a disaster can be close.

As far as Philbin is concerned, however, he seems to think his staff is strong.

"I have a lot of faith and confidence in myself and the staff and our players that we can make the corrections necessary to lead this team to play up to its potential and lead this team to a championship," Philbin said. "That's what I said the day I got here. I stand by what I said the day I got here and I'm confident I can do that."

Philbin knows he has to make a decision on Mike Sherman and Jim Turner. If he doesn't know, he's ignorant to the facts of 2013. But he refused to give an inch on the idea any of his coaches might have to go.

"I'm going to talk to every single player and every single coach and we'll decide and determine 2014 at a later point in time," he said. "I have a lot of confidence in our staff, our offensive staff, Mike Sherman. He's an excellent football coach. That's what I think."

I asked Philbin if, given his close relationship with Sherman, he is capable of either firing Sherman or convincing him to fade away via resignation.

"I'm beginning the evaluation of the 2013 season and we haven't made any decisions on who's coming back and who isn't," Philbin said, dodging the question. "We'll have all those discussions at the appropriate time."

No, I said. The question is whether you are capable of firing Sherman if it comes to that?

"That's my answer," Philbin said.

Philbin and owner Stephen Ross talk every week. They visited for nearly 30 minutes after Sunday's 20-7 loss to the New York Jets. At no time during those conversations has he been given assurances he'll be back in 2014. The subject hasn't even come up because both he and Ross seemed to assume the coach would be back.

"We haven't even talked about any of that stuff," Philbin said.

Ross, I'm told, likes Philbin. He doesn't want to fire Philbin.

But the collapse of 2013 in which the Dolphins didn't put up any fight in the two most important games of the season could be a game-changer.

As much as I hate to say this philbin will b back an May be an I stress may b they fire Sherman and or turner but that's prob all we can expect I hope that's enuff

MIT,

You know I have never been a fan of B.Albert. From his Chronic back problem to him having the strength of a kicker.

He is a solid player. But he is Clabo solid, Not B.McKinney Solid.

Plus, Albert is already pushing 30. At best you sign him to a 2-3 Year deal.

Reason nobody wanted Albert last season is because he wanted a 5 year deal. Reason nobody will want Albert this year is because he would want a 4yr deal. Which is to much for a linemen already entering the twilight of his career.

I have just emailed my ticket rep that I will not renew my season tickets. $200 is such a better value to get the NFL Sunday Ticket than pay what I paid to watch this god-awful offense.

I believe the defense is stout. The lack of an offensive line created issues for the entire team. Look how the defense played against Carolina for example, and the offense couldn't get out of their own way...troubling, disappointing, frustrated.

F$%^!

I have been a Dolphins fan since 1969 and honestly, this is the most embarassed and frustrated I have ever been as a fan. I look at other teams like NE, Pitt, Cincy and I see them play with heart, grit and die-hard effort on most every play. You watch their sub-par RB's drive their legs even after the whistle blows to get that extra 10 inches. You watch TE's and FB's throw amazing blocks to protect their QB. You see LB's and DE's fighting thru blocks to get to the QB or to stop the run. Fin fans see very little to none of this with our team. These guys get paid mega bucks to entertain a fan base and pay advertisers...If I'm a business, I don't invest in this team. I'm a fan - a die-hard fan, plain and simple...I want to win and see grit and determination from my players. Mr. Ross - is this too much to ask?

BTW, don't believe the disinformation you've read on this blog about Wheeler. If this phins cut Wheeler, he'll eat up $4.2 million of cap space. What a HORRIBLE contract to be stuck with!

Sherman in an interview early in the season expressed concerned about not being able to run the ball and PHILBIN imediatelly responded that we didn't need to be able to run the ball, that the Dolphins could get by with short passes. Evidently he thought he brought Aaron Rodgers with him from Greenbay. This is why Philbin has to defend Shermin because Shermin has always done what he was instructed to do by Philbin. If you didn't like the play calling look no further than Philbin. Greenbay could run this offense because they had superior QB talent. Tannehill made improvements this year but he is absolutely not Aaron Rogers.

14 decades of dreck.... Cannot take it anymore. Ireland scared off Harbaugh. Why does Ross cling to him??

That was supposed to be can not make adjustments

Free agents have been treating their stays with the Dolphins as Mike D of the Beastie Boys would say, "Chillin' at the beach down at Club Med."

Meaning, take an extended break from the media's desire to "make a splash" every offseason. Go after the guy who underperformed in relation to his contract at his last stop and was dumped to purge salary. Or the guy who didn't get offered the big contract and needs to re-prove himself. Lots of quality veterans looking for second chances are out there. And these guys humbly go about their business knowing they aren't going to break the bank with their next contract, but will at least be offered some stability by their newly appreciative team. Teams like Green Bay and Pittsburgh have been buying low and selling high for years.

Ross cannot make any move until Ted Wells releases his report which will probably be after the SB. It's just not known now what kind of action, if any, the NFL is going to take against those found responsible, maybe including Turner and Philbin.

I feel bad for an offensive line that had to play in front of a QB with zero pocket awareness, zero abillity to execute a screen play, and zero abillity to throw a long ball.

"I'm going to talk to every single player and every single coach and we'll decide and determine 2014 at a later point in time," he said. "I have a lot of confidence in our staff, our offensive staff, Mike Sherman. He's an excellent football coach. That's what I think

this is the same crap shula said about olivadoti thae last few years he coached. he refused to fire anybody and he got canned for that. sherman just sucks. plain and simple. but more importantly ireland is a complete joke. on NFL network they said the entire league doesn't know how he's been there so long.

Lamar Miller no conviction in the way he runs the ball...nuff said!

BS on Noll & Shula.
They were notoriously fiery pre & post game. And sufficiently emotionally invoved DURING game. Way more demonstrative than PhilBLAND.

orlando dolphin: i don't know where you heard ireland and philbin are safe. they haven't said that all day. i've been watching all day. they expect ireland to be gone.

pujo: to execute a screen play you need a good O-line. ours was horrible. you are blaming tannehill to much for things. his pocket awareness is fine. when the pocket collapes as quick as theirs did there is no where to go. you're ignorant and maybe should go to some practices to understand how the game works.

Has Irescum been fired yet?

Reading the posts its hard to believe the Thill supporters,

1. watched the Bills game
2. watched the Jets game
3. know anything about QB in the NFL.

When we needed Thill to come through in the clutch, he had a QBR of 45 and 42 in our clutch games.

The progress he had made sadly went into reverse gear as he missed wide open targets all day long, deep short and intermediate. The level of play he is at right now is that of his first couple of games in 2012.

What I watched on Sunday, was a meek QB, with no heart, passionless, awful deep ball, accuracy problems and terrible decision making. The slide on 3rd and 21 also illustrated the fact the guy has ZERO awareness of where he needs to get to.. the season is on the line and you slide.. pathetic.

Thill ranked out at 24th in the league, two full years as the starter for this team. Add to the fact Thill played QB for Sherman for another two years, so he has 4 years in the system.

Have you also ever considered that Sherman calls such dull predictable plays because they match his QB's limitations. When Thill does go deep he fails 80% of his throws over 20 yards its just not good enough.

Geno Smith and Thad Lewis are noth rookies and showed they are clearly ahead of Thill on the learning curve in the past two games.

A new OC and high QB pick should see Thill hit the bench. I'll give him a 40% chance of being the starter week 1, if we have a new OC. Thill will have lost the advantage of knowing the system and the protection afforded to him by installing Texas Dud's as our offensive brain trust.

You Thill fans will never be convinced until you see the same level of play next year and we miss the playoffs again.

You can't teach leadership and passion either, Thill has neither and makes me sick to look at him not give a damn that this franchise ended up being schooled against the bottom-feeders like the Bills and Jets.

You can't run screens with statues for OL. You need ATHLETIC linemen to run the screen game.

Cogs, Martin, Garner, Jerry & McKinney are the anthesisis of athletic!

Blame Tanny for the screen game? LOLOL No wonder why this fan base is ridiculed throughout the NFL.

Lamar Miller = Another Irescum bust

Ireland is safe?? Are U F'N kidding me?? Is Ross working for the Jests??

Ryan Tannehill, the worst QB in football.

Posted by: DZ | December 30, 2013 at 02:50 PM

Great post.

You cant win with a crap QB, GM, and HC.

We all saw Tannehill calling all those audibles at the line of scrimmage late in the Game. They didn't work either.

The team will continue to stink until the fans boycott and demand changes.

Phins would save 8.2 million by cutting Martin, Garner & Patterson. Cut Wheeler too & take the hit considering that by him not playing, the defense is probably better.

All those cuts would save about $3 mil you can give to Grimes. The entire OL, including reserves, needs to be rebuilt. Purge this atrocity & start over.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to talk certain positions or even be allowed to talk football in general. The only problem is that they are usually the only one doing the talking.

L.Miller is a talented RB that needs more carries. And a better O-line.

Now you can say that L.Miller sometimes doesn't run with the conviction of E.Lacy or Ricky. Or that he needs to get better with his blitz pick up. But to say L.Miller is an East-West runner has to be the most Asinine thing someone has said all year. What games are you watching? Definitely not a Dolphin game. And definitely not a 2013 Dolphins game.

L.Miller is a better between the Tackles RB than D.Thomas and 10 times the inside runner that Reggie was.

L.Miller makes one cut and goes. It is just difficult to make that 1 cut when you have 2 d-linemen in your face as soon as you get the hand off.

Armando, you didn't ask philbin those questions it was Omar Kelly but everything else in your article is correct. If you want the truth just go to miamidolphins site and listen to interview

Lamar Miller is a big bust. Cut him he's useless.

Sherman is definitely gone. JI, Philbin and Coyle get 1 more year. If they falter then the new regime gives Tannehill one year to see if he can do anything. So in a nutshell Tannehill gets 4 years to see what he can do. Next year is big as the Fins will bring in an OC that runs a pro style offense, not the college nonsense they have been running for 2 years now.

Omar Kelly is illiterate.

Lamar Miller ran hard yesterday for the only time in the Season. I guess trying to impress in order to be kept here. We know these Inner City kids from here. They try to do the minimum for the $$ they are getting. I hope somebody besides me notices this.

Ireland is done. Stick a fork in him.

Emtionless Philebin is right! This guy acts like a brain-dead zombie.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to talk certain positions or even be allowed to talk football in general.

Posted by: Dashi | December 30, 2013 at 05:33 PM

You fall into this category so why don't you take your own advice?

Miller cannot get tough yards or pass protect. Period. He is a talented runner but, that is only half of his duties. He is not an every down RB. PERIOD.

Daniel Thomas? The 3 pick gaffe? Thomas is a short yardage or 3rd down pass catcher. He also is not an every down RB & is lousy in pass protection. Not to mention, with his high running style, he is concussed or dealing with leg injuries & missing multiple games ever season.

So PUHHHHLEASE! Before you lecture others on what they should or shouldn't talk about, look in the mirror.

Sherman cant make chicken salad out of chicken shyt!

Mark, you should know Tannehill accounted for 7 points in 1/8 of the games played this year. Think he could win with Seattle's defense with that offensive firepower? No, didn't think so.

Posted by: DC Dolfan | December 30, 2013 at 03:10 PM

DC, you should know that Flacco accounted for 7 points in 1/8 of the games played this year. Same last two games. He also threw 2 more intercetions in those games. So what's your point?

I've never seen a worse RB than D Thomas

Marco Troll has arrived with his usual drivel. Do yourself a favor and ignore him

u serious ross. hurry up, why fall behind other teams. fire them now!! wake up!!!

Fold the team or move it to London and stop embarrassing S Fla.

L.Miller has ran hard multiple times this season. Phins just didn't feed him the ball enough this season. L.Miller had at least 3 games this season he would've gained over 100yds if he had been given a regular workload (20-25 Carries).

Plus, L.Miller isn't from the inner city if you know Miami. He is from the Suburbs of south Miami. Better known as Kendall.

Only real gangsters and hoodlums in Dade come from the North side. Anything from Flagler South is considered nice neighborhoods. Just ride the Metrorail and find out.

MORON ROSS WILL GIVE IRESCUM AN EXTENSION!

According to next Year's schedule, if we play like we did this Year we will be lucky if We win 3 Games.

Dooshy, Miller stinks. Get a clue.

Shermans leaving? Good riddance!

Yeah oscar, all black people aren't from the hood.

mando. there are TWO reasons miami is NOT in the playoffs. first, the small reason: tannehill was seeing ghosts from the buffalo nightmare, a hangover of some sorts that prompted him time and again to throw to the first available reciever, yes better coaching may have solved this, if the quarterbacks coach was on point he could have been premptive about this or at the very least expected it, if that coach still has a job maybe he should right this down as to not forget the importance of having his QB recover quickly after a sack fest like buffalo, the very first play should have had tannehill stay in there until his last read and then throw the ball away just to get his legs back. the other part to the small reason was the DEFENSE, yes, the jets are NOT that good and other then maybe not having this unit ready to play the real reason is that this defense comes and goes with solid play opposite brent grimes...when dimitri is in quarterbacks tend to force throws elsewhere and that is when miami's D thrives...now, for the BIG reason: prior to the draft miami had huge oppourtunities with their number of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks, and quite frankly, they BLEW IT_ they didn't properly address runningback(eddie lacey is in the playoffs)nor did they properly address left tackle(the third overall tackle taken in the draft is with philly and in the playoffs) and they totally whiffed on cornerback...i mean really, the only two picks i liked was DION SIMS and julani jenkins and neither has made a significant impact for us this year...that is THE biggest reason of them all...DION JORDAN had better be a MONSTER next year or that draft may go down as one of the worst.

Posted by: TomJeff | December 30, 2013 at 05:43 PM

Flacco has a Superbowl ring and was the MVP. What has Thill done, 15-17.

Comparing a guy that has had a bad year with a guy who has had a bad year means ZERO.

Just a side note. Tannehill gets the pAss this season but the reason i will be critical of him next season is because of this jets game. The reason is because the o line gabe tannehill all the time in the world to throw( seriously i did not even hear mckinnies, clabos, jerrys, and brenners name only time was pouncey for a hold but that was it). Tannehill got his time to throw And guess what he overthrows wallace, and gets intercepted 3 times! This is why he gets next year to prove something to me the fans the organization and the entire nfl

100% of people called ExposingTheFraud are toothless, ignorant, racist buffoons living with their mom in a trailer park.

Guess which ones they are!

FYI and all other clowns with ZERO BACKBONE,

Real tough behind that keyboard spewing nonsense, but still afraid to man up and put your name behind whatever you say. I guess that is what happens when you come from a long line of Cowards.

I look in the Mirror and see Dashi. High Character, High Integrity.

You look in the Mirror you see a Coward who has failed at life.

And yes, You are a Failure at life. The only reason to explain for a grown man to be constantly angry. They failed at life.

Must be sad knowing that you have reached the end of days and realized that you are a total failure.

keep Ireland...lose me as a fan.

Philbin says right direction? Like the Jets who were ecstatic over an 8-8 season? (see video all over ESPN)As a long time Miami fan, we have seen more tattered personnel decisions than I can count. Seems every week someone is flourishing whom Miami waved goodbye to: Marshall, Dansby, Ginn, Bush, Welker, etc. The list appears endless. Who is next? Wake or Hartline? Ross now faces letting Philbin and Ireland go now or next year. Surely the decision will be slow, anemic and deliberate, just like the on field play. New England's reign is closer to the end than the beginning, Ryan staying in NY is a plus for Miami (their decision making is almost as bad as Miami's) and Buffalo is standing in place. Step up Ross. Make changes now or we can all re-post our comments a year from now.

Udonis is(from the hood) but he works hard.

Leslie Frazier got a real bum deal from the Vikes. The fo made all of the bum personnel moves, now Frazier's made the scapegoat.

I mean things like Christian Ponder, signing the ex-Buc qb, letting Percy Harvin get away, etc... etc... The fo has made a myriad of bungles.

I'm not advocating Frazier for Fins hc, just stating the raw deal he got in Minnesota.

I look in the Mirror and see Dashi - a Coward who has failed at life.

I will now return to licking the carpet in order to get high.

Very few here understand that my friend, it defies belief that after two of the worst QB performances we have seen here in recent memory. The fact that it was to losing teams also defies belief.

Philbin, Sherman, Coyle, Wheeler, R Jones, Clabo, D Thomas, should all be shown the door. Ireland getting binned goes without saying.

The Dolphins are irrelevant.

It's going to be that way for a long time to come.
