A second look at finalist possibilities

So who are the finalists?

Ever since my report saying the Dolphins will this weekend be interviewing the finalists for the vacant general manager job, the one thought on everyone's mind has been ... who are these guys?

Well, there seems to be much speculation and some confusion about that so allow me to dive in with my own speculation and confusion.

Late last night I was told by one NFL source two candidates who are definitely out are Pittsburgh's Omar Khan and Tennessee's Lake Dawson. Others reported the same thing. I don't care about them. That was wrong. I'm correcting me.

Khan is indeed out. Dawson, however, is in, multiple sources are telling me this morning. Dawson was always in. He is indeed a finalist for the job.

This ties closely with the fact Dawson had a good interview in Miami.

There are others and here is where the speculation begins:

I'm guessing Dolphins in-house candidate Brian Gaine will be a finalist. I have not been told this beyond doubt. But I do know the Dolphins recognize the respect Gaine has around the league. I know how he fits in being able to work with ownership, coach Joe Philbin and executive vice president of football administration Dawn Aponte.

One thing I must tell you about Gaine's candidacy that doesn't apply to any other is he's a known quantity. He has been in the Dolphins war room on draft day with owner Stephen Ross and Philbin so they know what he's like on that day. That's a view the Dolphins don't have on any other candidate.

The Dolphins also have his reports on players -- assuming he wrote some -- they can refer to. So I assume the Dolphins know with certainty how much Gaine hit and missed on players. They know whether he was truly a driving force in the chase for Cameron Wake, as has been reported, or not really.

(I was told that like everyone else in the building, Gaine was very much for getting Wake but expressed doubts about paying him the kind of guarantees the Dolphins paid him as someone jumping from the CFL).

At any rate, my guess is Gaine will be a finalist.

I know others had great interviews with the Dolphins and I believe those resonated.

One of those is Cleveland's Ray Farmer. He was among the first candidates interviewed and I reported then he impressed in that interview.

Two things on Farmer:

He has a powerful ally in the room in that Carl Peterson, the former Kansas City Chiefs general manager and president and current Ross advisor, loves Farmer. Peterson hired Farmer in Kansas City. Peterson is intimately familiar with Farmer's abilities and potential and has passed those along to Ross.

One complaint I hear about Farmer is he's working for the Cleveland Browns. And if there is one franchise that is on the lips of NFL critics more than the Dolphins it's the Browns. So, readers continually ask me, why hire someone from the Browns?

Well, Farmer went to the Browns in 2013. He's been there one season.

I don't think you can blame the years of struggles the Browns have suffered on someone who has been in the organization one season.

MIT, how can you really say that Ireland's 1st rd picks were pretty good?

You have to give him Jake Long to say 2(Long/Pouncey) of his 6 1st rd pick were indisputably what they are supposed to be. Pro Bowl/All Pro. Jury's still out on Tannehill, though he's climbing, yet still far away.

1. Vontae Davis-- Shipped out.
2. Jared Odrick-- 2010, still part time starter
3. Dion Jordan-- 2013, yet to be determined

Odrick, I believe now, is what he is. Tannehill/Jordan, I'll call high potential, yet unrealized. But, depending on their futures, could one day make Ireland's 1st rd drafts hit or miss.

Not making him out to be a star but I challenged you earlier as to who was the only guy to have been drafted 19th or later and been a day one starter at LT? The only two I can think of in modern football have been Sam Baker and Matt Lyght. The list of others who tried and failed is much longer.

Man U is all set to sign 25 year midfielder from Chelsea. Forget whether it's $30 mil or 30 mil pounds.not sure what makes you think they don't have the money to spend to compete. Still one of the wealthiest franchises in pro sports.

..Ioso. B level players?? The more and more I think about the players on this roster. The more I question the coaching here. Or for that matter every bad team. It isn't fair to measure against New England because Philbin-Sparano-Cameron are all Sandpeople compared to the Jedi Knight in NE. But do you think the Phins would have gotten anything close to the production the Pats got if we switched rosters? Seriously. We have Tom Brady and Joe Philbin. Would we have had similar success? Switch teams. Our Roster with Bellichek. Would we have been 8-8?

The more I think about it. The more I am convinced coaching is the biggest issue here. Can we coach people up? It has been this way since I have been following this team that rarely do we have a coaching advantage. Rarely do players come here and get better. Fairly often these players leave..And wow..They end up pretty decent. What happened?

Joe Philbin?? Ok. Hopefully the players can overcome the coaching this year.

If Dawn Aponte is worth her trouble she'll get Wallace to re-negotiate his contract so he gets a smaller CAP hit this year, and then we'll have more to do other things with.

rdubs is right about the general structure of cap hits on long term contracts. year one is small with massive bonuses to compensate. There is generally one year in the contract with a large salary and still a lot of dead money attached that you have to swallow as a team. It's this year for Wallace for example. Then in the later years you have larger salaries and potential cap hits attached with no guaranteed money making it a play for pay kind of deal at the tail end.

I would love to see Fergie as HC of the Dolphins. Can you imagine Wheeler getting a boot kicked in his face and Thill getting the famous Hairdryer from Sir Alex.

Alex Ferguson could get more from this team, purely as a leader and ZERO knowledge of this game than Failbin. I can't see Fergie looking down at his script when addressing a locker room full of warriors. Pathetic Philbin, truly pathetic.

Sam, a year ago you were saying Odrick was a exclusively a DE, not DT so whatever you say about his future I take not witha grain of salt, but a lump.

There hasn't been a bad pick amongst all of Ireland's first round picks - not one.

Sam, I'd wager Jordan has a much higher chance to get to a probowl than Thill ever will.

We cannot franchise Grimes. He has to be signed to a 4 year deal at least

So V.Davis is the only miss Ireland had in the first.

Not bad when you consider he got a 2nd rd pick in return.

..Craig M...United is and has been in massive debt since the Glazers bought them. The myth that they spend like the top clubs is just that. They spend nowhere near the amount City, or Chelsea does. I bet QPR has more money then United.

I think the MF name is Mata. But he is injured now.

United has some good talent up front. Janizau, Wellbeck. But no service. You could see it yesterday v Sunderland. Those guys are running free, and nobody can get them the ball. The idea United lost a League Cup Semi to Sunderland says it all. Moyes deserves more time. But nobody was going to have success this year.

United never got calls!!!! Especially extra time at Old Trafford.

Craig, you do know that Chelsea and Man City spend $30M on a player then sit him on the bench right? You think the Glazers have the moeny or the dedication to spend with the likes of Roman and the Oil Barons of ManCity? The Glazeres need to make money from Man U, those others bleed exhorbitantly wipe their collective arses with a $100M operating loss.

These types are the reasons why Platini wants to integrate fair play regarding spending on players in Europe.

Sunderland may be the next to join this farce as their Chairman died a few weeks back and the team is up for sale.

If Gaine gets it expect everyone to be fired in a year. He is a back up and would be under Dawn and Joe's thumb.

Do fans really want a bookkeeper running a FB team bc if you promote from within that is EXACTLY what will happen.

The whole FO including the owner is an embarrassing mess of country club mentality and career advancement vs. putting a winning club on the field.

Ross needs to hire a President who runs everything. Ross should watch games on TV from NYC and that is as close to the club as he should come.

Alas that won't happen bc he is rich and of course selling condos in NYC is just like building a winning NFL team. All you need is money and some cronies to tell you how to spend it.

If only Cuban wanted to buy the Fins.

Does anyone know if Sherman or Ireland are being interviewed by other teams?

Just thought you guys needed a good laugh this morning.

Posted by: NHFINSFAN | January 23, 2014 at 11:35 AM

NH funny on Ireland. But I think Sherman is actually retiring. He is going out a very rich man who owns the second best winning record in Green Bay Packer history right behind Vince Lombardi and has had a long and fulfilling career as a coach and former college player. I don't think we are in position to be making fun of him from our desk jobs ;)

Ireland NEVER had an "excellen" or "great" draft.
You wanna debate "good" at a bar, go ahead, knock yourself out.
But "excellent" or "great" is patently absurd. ABSURD..

Hahaha, DD, nice one @ 11:50 - you couldn't be referring to the almost 10mins of extra time they got against City, could u?

I'm not saying United is close to Arsenal, Chelsea or City right now. I think the need to rebuild. And yes I realize they've been in debt for years. But their revenues are huge and they are still the most popular pro sports team in the world and HUGE in Asia.

ibs is here to lecture
the bloggers on
what is and
what isn't

Emo, there is a very good chance that a year from now we look back at the 2012 draft as out of the ballpark. problem is for Ireland it took him about 4 practice drafts to finally get it.

Watch the ProBowl very carefully, it's a sign of things to come (re: Kickoffs). Here today, gone tomorrow.

There hasn't been a bad pick amongst all of Ireland's first round picks - not one.

Are you serous? Not one?

Where's Vonte? A #1 and #2 used on Dion Jordan, who was "barely a part time player".

When using a 1st and 2nd rd pick on a player other than qb. IMO, that player needs to be a starter and a pro bowler that same year.

However, you standards may be much lower.

Odrick? Originally drafted as a 3-4 DE, now being "force fed" into the tackle position. He may eventually be good at DT, but far from great.

I mean, I want these players to work out as much as you. Just that the full value for where they were drafted has yet to pan out a full 100%. Hopefully in the future, just not yet.

Therefore, to grade them high is still far premature for now.

Man U is all set to sign 25 year midfielder from Chelsea. Forget whether it's $30 mil or 30 mil pounds.not sure what makes you think they don't have the money to spend to compete. Still one of the wealthiest franchises in pro sports.

Get the f$#k out of here with this crap! lol midfielder from chelsea. This is an american football blog not some sissy soccer flop house. ;) j/k (but seriously, soccer? YAWN!)

Most popular sports team in the world? Based on what measurement? I don't think they are. Madrid probably based on merchandise sales. At one time not too long ago, my team, little Benfica had the most "associates" (fan club members with added benefits) than any team in the world - then madrid crushed that number...

Posted by: darryldunphy | January 23, 2014 at 11:42 AM

Agree 100%. Remember the Bum Phillips quote about Shula? Pretty close.

The "Glazers"? That's a soccer team name? Sounds like they got the name from lobstertube.

poll the players
and u'll find out that the
pb is important to them

So V.Davis is the only miss Ireland had in the first.

Not bad when you consider he got a 2nd rd pick in return.

Posted by: Dashi | January 23, 2014 at 11:49 AM

Used that specific 2nd rd pick to draft Jamar Taylor. Vontae started all 16gms his rookie season. Taylor?

Sam, how was Odrick drafted as a 3-4 DE? What system do they run at Penn State? he was a DT in a 4-3 his entire college career.

Daytona, don't regress here, you've behaved for a while - let's not amke up stories now.

As far as Vontae goes, he was a starter here form day one and held up well. he rubbed the coach the wrong way and was shipped out but you want to tell me he is isn't a good NFL CB???

How can you say Jordan will be a future pro bowler or even a great player at this point. Is the potential there?. Any player drafted has potential but again this guy hardly seen the field. I know the arguement that Vernon kept him on the sidelines but if a guy is that dynamic and great then teams find a way to fit him in and get him his reps.

You really think our current collection of coaches can use him properly. They have run great players out of here the past few years in bush, long, dansby and Burnett.

It seems that philbin and co couldn't recognize great talent if it stood directly infront of them. For me the jury is out on Jordan. I expect a top 3 pick to show more than he did in his rookie season regardless of the coaches

..Which City game???? I am United through and through. But they had some doozies where the ref put up favorable extra time. So many late goals. But that was the thing abut United under Fergie. Always on the attack. The players didn't put that time on the clock. They kept going forward.

It would be weird when United would play a defensive style in say the Champions league. They just weren't good at it. 1 time v Barcelona it worked. But 2 other times v Barcelona they got throttled.

And you really want to tell me Jordan doesn't have all the earmarks of being a good player too? man, the guy had the msot impact plays on our defense with a quarter of the snaps.

Posted by: Phins78 | January 23, 2014 at 11:52 AM

He is also going out a man that had next to bottom fewest yeards in the NFL over the last two seasons. Sherman will be remembered as the man who broke records such as fewest yards in a game, fewest rushing yards in a game and not too forget those lovely 58 sacks.

I also don't give a rats about his money, he should hand his salary back to Ross and let the homeless or the local orphange take the lot.

but marco
78 said so

Ireland's first rounders:
Jake Long: Grade D - good player hardly worth the 1st pick in the draft, esp. with a franchise QB there to be picked. Injury prone. Not with team anymore.
Vontae Davis: Grade D - never lived up to first rd. expectations and was traded for a 2nd.
Jared Ordrick: Grade C - nice solid player, but not really worth 1st rd grade. Tailed off badly the end of 2013 season.
Mike Pouncey - Grade B+ - very good player but 15 is a bit high to take a center.
Tannehill - Grade incomplete - either a draft bust F or a grade A if he turns out to be a franchise QB.
Jordan - Grade F (so far)- never should have moved up to 3 to get him with so many other pressing needs. Rookie year a huge dissappointiment with only 26 tackes and 2 sacks, unable to break starting lineup. Boom or bust player has been bust so far.

I don't have the latest stats to back that up. I know a year or two ago United's revenues were second to none through merchandising. i can't state enough how HUGE they were in Asia. I highly doubt thats changed in just a year or two.

I figured the New York Yankees would be most popular worldwide but its not even close.

Your grades suck. Jake Long is not a D, he was a probowl tackle. He wasnt injury prone at the time. Dont forget we traded back to get Odrick and with that we took Misi who on your grading scale would get an F-

D29, obviously I'm saying that based on opinion. I'm saying it based on the way he flashed in limited opportunities. I also believe Taylor can be a good palyer for a long time based on his resume but I'm not making the same predicitions because i have yet to see him do it on the field.

Now I also concede that the coaching staff better figure out a way of making better use of him. If he can't get enough snaps at DE, then get him more at OLB - move him around - it's a luxury you have with teh guy. We briefly saw the package that had Wake, VErnon, and Jordan on the field at once and it came up with some nice plays - but then - shelved. Why?

It's also a strong possibility that we have a new coaching staff in here (at least on defense) in two years to figure it all out. Also if St. Louis drafts Clowney this year then they will provide a textbook to Coyle on how it's done - although the Giants gave him a good one a few years back with JPP, Osi, and Tuck. But this numbnut couldn't figure it out.

There is also the possibility that Wake's days as a full timer are coming to an end. I think this may be his last really productive year coming up. 32 or thereabouts is usually the end for non qbs.

Ireland had to go. Next up. Rebuilding a team from 1-15 is going to take a few years. The team has been rebuilding for the past 20 years.

So whomever it is he has to hit on a couple of lucky picks. How does NE stay on top when they select at 28 every year? They built a core group of players, got lucky with Brady and voila. Nightmare for everyone else. The beauty of NE is that they dictate what the game will be like. And they have played that way for quite some time. We wait and react.

Hopefully, whomever we pick gets some luck and has some skill. Otherwise another 4 or 5 yeas of this BS.

2watt, reading is fundamental buddy, I didn't say it was not important. I said there will be some rule changes in the ProBowl (like no kickoffs, ball will be placed on the 25 yd line) that you will soon see implemented during the regular season. They're testing it to see the reaction, but they've been talking about doing away with kickoffs for a while.

You guys are on drugs....

You telling me Jared Odrick wasn't worth the 28th pick in the draft? Really? Do you know how few guys at 28 make an impact in the NFL. Look it up. If BB had made this pick guys would be saying, 'how come we never get guys like that'? And you give him a C?.....comical!,

And the guys that are right Jordan off after only one year, you're going to look awfully stupid when this guy becomes a big time player. JPP had little to know impact in his first year in the NFL. After 2-3 years people were saying, 'we should have drafted JPP'.

It's a comical fan base!.....

DD, you have no idea how much you sound like a Pats fan at 12:01, hahaa

The Pats didn't throw that flag, the refs did...

just joking, man... but seriosuly, I hate the pats

Purdue won the Rose Bowl with Bob Greise - do you remember him???? PLus he kicked two extra points to beat USC 14-`13

grade scale
no p/o's = suxxxxxx
1st rd. p/o thrashing = suxxxx
division rd. thrashing = suxxx
afc champship thrashing = suxx
super bowl thrashing = sux

2 watt, oh yeah, sorry my bad my very, very, good friend.

Blow it all up. Start over. It's the only way. Get rid of everybody because this whole operation is too dysfunctional to get it on the right track.

MassD, I stopped reading your post when you gave the Long pick a D... guy was a four time pro bowler...

again, the fact that he still isn't on the team doesn't mean he was a "d" pick.

Do hall of famers get a C in your book? That would be the only level above multiple time pro bowlers.

I think Ryan should've been the pick but it doesn;t mean Long was a bad player.

You still don't get it do you?

Yes, he traded V.Davis for J.Taylor.

And you are admitting that Vontae wasn't a bust either. Agreed.

Ireland drafted a decent player and still managed to get value back in return before that players rookie contract was up. NAME 1 OTHER GM IN THE LAST 25 YEARS THAT WORKED FOR THE DOLPHINS THAT HAS.

What did we get for J.Fletcher?

What did we get for J.Allen?

In 5 years running the team Ireland drafted the 2 Best QBs after Marino to wear a Dolphins Uniform.

Bob Griese? Man, I'm 39 years old, not 59.

ok dc

Ireland's 2nd rounders (now it gets really bad):
- Philip Merling - Grade F - total bust
- Chad Henne - Grade D - career backup QB.
- Pat White - Grade F - total bust.
- Sean Smith - Grade C - OK player but not shut down corner by any means. Not with team anymore.
- Koa Misi - Grade C - solid player but not a playmaker. Does not play passing downs.
- Daniel Thomas - Grade F - Ireland traded up to get a player who is not a starting caliber RB in the NFL.
- Jonathan Martin - Grade Super F - worst 2nd rd bust in NFL history.
- Jamar Taylor - Grade D (so far) - injury prone player saw very little playing time.

Fair enough on the point of potential. I can recall two plays where he made impact plays. The first was the hit on flacco. Huge play and got the fins back in that game. Second was covering gronk down field.

I just wonder if he's so great then how couldn't he beat out wheeler at OLB. He showed he could cover a great TE in gronk all be it one play but as bad as wheeler was and especially at years end. How does Jordan not get a better look.

Is wheeler better than Jordan. I guess the coaches thought so

Bottom line is the talent was there to go to the playoffs and the coaches blew it !!!

Irelands last conversation went down like this...

"You had a chance to be a Coach and you Blew it.... my hands are tied now"

Source: (Mando source), 1-1-2014 party.

Really. Good post at 12:1m. We see. It the same way. I agree on Wake. Jordan and Vernon. Are the futures. Be funny to see all the guys run and hide when Jordan makes it big.

'D for Jake Long'.....on what planet? 'Franchise QB'? Jesus, Tannehill's almost the QB Ryan is in only his second season. Doubt it? Check their stats from last year. You guys can have your Matt Ryan and his $100million contract. One playoff win in five years is shyte.....if thats your franchise QB, you're in trouble.

D29, there were other plays where he made a nice impact. Forcing the Matt Ryan INT was one, beating Joe Thomas one on one was impressive, chasing Cam Newton down from behind and a while back was also fun to watch.

As to why he couldn't beat out Wheeler, I was hoping you'd tell me.

I mean Jordan can blanket Gronk but Wheeler looked like a dunce covering Hooman.

Of course the Long pick was a grade D. This was the very first pick in the draft and he was never even close to being worth that. And with Matt Ryan being passed over? And what team is Long on now? And what team is Matt Ryan still on??
C'mon, you'd have to be blind not to understand that.

regardless of who or when players were picked, allowing the opposing team to move down field at ease is just not acceptable. Yes Reshad went to the Pro-bowl but whre is he now? I'm sure we can all agree that Reshad is soft and not consistent. Carroll will make alot of $$$???? Are u serious??? Just ask Brady and he'll tell u something different. Spitler will be a ST player and only that! Not a game changer what so ever, and as far as Clemons same thing. Whatever happened to players like Polumalu, Zach Thomas, Urlacher.....???? They were everywhere when they were on the field! We need more impact players then just mediocre players.

Here are my top three qualifications for the vacant GM position: No one named Ireland; no one related to Ireland; and finally, no one who has ever worked for Ireland!

Rebuild mode? Smh. The probl is some of you expect a star at every position like a madden Allpro squad. How in de fa uh ck are we on rebuild mode when we should've just won 10 games andadw the playoffs with a 2nd ur QB with little exp to his resume? A better line and a star or two and it's time to dance with the rest.. Period. Rebuild mode...smh. Blogs. Lol
