A second look at finalist possibilities

So who are the finalists?

Ever since my report saying the Dolphins will this weekend be interviewing the finalists for the vacant general manager job, the one thought on everyone's mind has been ... who are these guys?

Well, there seems to be much speculation and some confusion about that so allow me to dive in with my own speculation and confusion.

Late last night I was told by one NFL source two candidates who are definitely out are Pittsburgh's Omar Khan and Tennessee's Lake Dawson. Others reported the same thing. I don't care about them. That was wrong. I'm correcting me.

Khan is indeed out. Dawson, however, is in, multiple sources are telling me this morning. Dawson was always in. He is indeed a finalist for the job.

This ties closely with the fact Dawson had a good interview in Miami.

There are others and here is where the speculation begins:

I'm guessing Dolphins in-house candidate Brian Gaine will be a finalist. I have not been told this beyond doubt. But I do know the Dolphins recognize the respect Gaine has around the league. I know how he fits in being able to work with ownership, coach Joe Philbin and executive vice president of football administration Dawn Aponte.

One thing I must tell you about Gaine's candidacy that doesn't apply to any other is he's a known quantity. He has been in the Dolphins war room on draft day with owner Stephen Ross and Philbin so they know what he's like on that day. That's a view the Dolphins don't have on any other candidate.

The Dolphins also have his reports on players -- assuming he wrote some -- they can refer to. So I assume the Dolphins know with certainty how much Gaine hit and missed on players. They know whether he was truly a driving force in the chase for Cameron Wake, as has been reported, or not really.

(I was told that like everyone else in the building, Gaine was very much for getting Wake but expressed doubts about paying him the kind of guarantees the Dolphins paid him as someone jumping from the CFL).

At any rate, my guess is Gaine will be a finalist.

I know others had great interviews with the Dolphins and I believe those resonated.

One of those is Cleveland's Ray Farmer. He was among the first candidates interviewed and I reported then he impressed in that interview.

Two things on Farmer:

He has a powerful ally in the room in that Carl Peterson, the former Kansas City Chiefs general manager and president and current Ross advisor, loves Farmer. Peterson hired Farmer in Kansas City. Peterson is intimately familiar with Farmer's abilities and potential and has passed those along to Ross.

One complaint I hear about Farmer is he's working for the Cleveland Browns. And if there is one franchise that is on the lips of NFL critics more than the Dolphins it's the Browns. So, readers continually ask me, why hire someone from the Browns?

Well, Farmer went to the Browns in 2013. He's been there one season.

I don't think you can blame the years of struggles the Browns have suffered on someone who has been in the organization one season.

nemo we tried telling u all that at end of season, keeping philbin made everything else pointless

Yeah, hopefully Farmer joins us. Like you said, I was on board for giving Ireland and Philbin both one more year to make the playoffs or firing them all.

Gaine might be a good option at this point. But why promote Ireland's number 2 and fire Ireland?

Dashi, I completely agree on Chud. Guy got a raw deal.

sam albert was a no brainer, cost ireland his job

just reported miami told xander he wont be the gm

guessing that means its down to farmer and dawson if either even wants the job

Hahaa, you think Ross cares about interest income now, hahaha, don't be silly Daytona.

I'm going to stop talking about this issue with you now. You obviously don't see the benefit here. I explained it, and you bring up interest income from Ross' bank accounts... wow....

Dusty, when the season ended I said either keep fire both Ireland and Philbin or keep them both. I admit I do let my homer glasses cloud things with this team at times. If Farmer turns them down we are in a bad situation imo.

If Farmer declines the second interview its just another blk eye for the organization.. I know reputation doesnt matter to many of you but in the NFL it does..

Dashi was talking about how bad the Pats are at Drafting WRs and DBs in the 2nd and 3rd. (Which seemed to end that conversation)

That has nothing to do with them making the playoffs!!

Coaching Vs Personnel.

B.Belichick is 1 of my Top 5 Favorite Coaches. And I believe my list only has the best of the best in it.

But just like an Old Shula couldn't pick a roster, Belichick can't pick a CB or a WR to save his life.

He passed on M.Wallace for B.Tate.

Just say you want to argue with Dashi.

But the truth is the truth. Over the last 10 years the Pats have been bad at picking WRs and DBs early.Real bad!! Destroying all those 2nd and 3rd round picks they use to stockpile.

If Farmer declines the second interview its just another blk eye for the organization.. I know reputation doesnt matter to many of you but in the NFL it does..

Next weeks headline may read "Racist Republican Ross Hires Moolie To Be New GM."

Perhaps The Phins believe if they hire a black guy they'll do better with drafting black guys ?

I say hire an Asian guy.

China is an untapped source for NFL talent.

Wet Foot Yellow Foot insource some cheap Chinese labor.

That's why Ross is over there.

But MIT raves how "SHREWED" Ireland was in that we have a $19M carryover(and no playoffs). Spending 9M(Albert) of that $19M in 2013, probably gets us into the playoffs. J Martin played RT better than Clabo, so raving about a $19M carryover is like raving about rain when you already saw that the clouds were gray.

Plus, that $19M carryover did not increase what our 2014 salary would be, because we now pay Wallace $17M instead of $10M. Our 2013 salary cap did not increase or decrease one penny because of it.

Also, it will become much more difficult to get Albert now. More costly too.

Dashi is a douche who is an embarrassment to Dashi.

Dashi with The Phins 4-5 "The Dolphins will go 11-5"

Dashi "Ireland is a great GM"

not more costly sam cause it would of cost a 2nd rd pick. but yes now he can choose his team

Daytona is losing it again....

I said nothign of the like in ur post there, whacko.

Now get me out of your head and engage someone else...

farmer just pulled out of running for job

unreal its official now, worst franchise ever. this is so pathetic

You have to be kidding me!!!!!

Farmer declined his second interview!!! I hate Ross and the organization. Their horrible at every aspect!!!!! You guys can continue to follow the losers running this team.

F Philbin!!! And Ross

Hahaa, you think Ross cares about interest income now, hahaha, don't be silly Daytona.

I'm going to stop talking about this issue with you now. You obviously don't see the benefit here. I explained it, and you bring up interest income from Ross' bank accounts... wow....

I guess this is how you respond when being "OVERWHELMED WTH FACTS". I even made it EASY TO UNDERSTAND by placing it in ACCOUNTANT TERMS.

It scares me for your clients if you think the FIRST YEAR of the Wallace deal was SREWED. Especially when considering the ENTIRE SCOPE and how the money was and wasn't used.

Then the 2014 breadth of it made it totally benign. That would be great if this topic were cancer.

looks like gaine will be only guy who will take this pointless position since philbin the idiot is running the show

This is ridicolous.... Aponte and Philbin running the show. Pathetic

Dusty, the worse thing that ever happen to the Fins was the day Ross bought the team. Gaines are you kiddin me??

Everyday I come on here to blog about trivial nonsense, wasting hundreds of hours of my valuable time.
I have an aqua and orange butt plug that I comfortably wear while making these daily posts.
It offends me greatly to learn of anyone making fun of "my team"
I wish everyone here would share in my fantasy and believe that I'm really a brilliant financial analyst.
Ohh, gotta run, that's Gordon Gecko calling me.

Albert would have made a huge difference to Thills Blindside and may a couple of those D Thomas 3rd and short sweep would have worked giving us that extra win we needed. Ireland wouls still be here, so well done Jeff for not getting Albert.

Can someone explain why execs are shunning the Fins???

Daytona is losing it again....

The audience isn't dumb. They see who's "losing it". Consider that I will not carry on this so meaningless and unimportant(football), in the grand scheme of things, conversation with you today.

However, if you wish, I'm still open to "CIVIL" football discussions at anytime you wish. If not, still have a great day.

miami is about done far as being a franchise, should be moved soon. this hole has become to deep to dig out of

Can someone explain to me why the NFL execs are shunning the Dolphins??

Duaty what will it take to get Philbin the F off the team a 7 and 9 records??

Daytona, if you can't see that the team has the same amount of cap sapce to use this off season (2014)whether they split the first two years evenly or not, I have no further help for you.

however it did give them more flexibility last offseason to make more moves (2013). Considering they singed Wallace on the first day of the offseason in 2013, it was a SHREWD move.

Again, if you don't understand this, not my problem.

You can go on making stupid posts like you didat 4:31 if it makes you feel better. It doesn't hurt or bother me in the least.

I know you are a deeply bitter and troubled soul who probably suffers from at least one personality disorder. You've been banned from here before and you are near senior citizen age. Should tell you a lot about your behaviour.

God bless.

MassD @2:39pm,

Don't be 'classless'.....LMFAO.....

This is not good. Should be a wake up call to the owner....

yes ray, they arent offering any power to these gms, philbin has all the say. its pathetic

Disaster is looming with Farmer before it even starts. He is a good friend of Ross's friend Carl Peterson. Mr. Ross: STOP HIRING FRIENDS!!!! STOP HIRING FRIENDS OF FRIENDS!!!!!

MiT im glad you see this as well..

Looks like Gaines will get promoted.. I cant believe we still cant get over this Parcells regime. Why are the Fins cursed?

Take the Dolphins poll on who we need to sign;
http://www.DolphinsTruth.com

What a F--king joke this franchise has become. Even Farmer has now pulled out! Per:

Ian Rapoport ✔ @RapSheet

Days ago, #Dolphins had 2 top GM candidates in Ray Farmer & Jason Licht. Now, Licht works for #Bucs & Farmer pulled out to stay in Cleveland

WOW!

not sure anymore ray, ross has gone even higher on the scale of being mentally challenged than i ever thought he could. philbin will be awful again next year but not sure anymore if it matters, he may still keep him. guessing miami will be moved soon, its a complete disaster, almost like hes doing it on purpose. london anyone?

HAHAHA. Farmer is OUT!

Ding ding ding! Brian Gaine wins by default. No one else wants the job.

Mr. Roger Goodell, PLEASE HELP US!

yeah twitter saying its gaines job,lol

I did say be careful for what you wish for when getting rid of Ireland, wow ... even I didn't think it would get this bad.....

sam thats not even funny anymore, its a fact. someone needs to step in and make this franchise do something correctly. goodell may just have to do it

This team just CANNOT save face. Every year it's a new rejection, HAHAHA

armando just got off phone with farmer, farmer wouldnt say if he declined the interview till he announces it,lol

Fin fans should start an ONLINE PETITION with a million signatures for Roger Goodell to relieve this franchise of Stephen Ross.

It isn't even good to the NFL, as a product of theirs, to continue to watch as a one time FLAGSHIP FRANCHISE is pulverized to dust.

Mr. Goodell, HELP..........!

Someone way back said if we kept Philbin and booted Ireland the only guy to get the job would be Gaine.

Wished that guy was wrong.

What a smart and handsome guy that was....

sam remember this date, seriously. its the end of a once proud franchise. totally broken. move the team and let us wait a few years for another one

thanks mark

Farmer just pulled out

anyone seriously know how to write to ross to where it will actually get to him

Hey wasn't Rapoport the guy who said the Dolphins went hard after Licht when they thought he was signing with Tampa? Guy lacks in credibility, no?

So Farmer doesn't want to come here. Fair enough. Go hire Dawson or Xanders. Last I checked Farmer didn't walk on water.

Didn't Parcells turn down the Falcons? Seems to have turned out Ok for them. Also turned down the Bucs at one time. Went on to win a Super Bowl after being turned down.

Whatever....doesn't want to be here.....NEXT.

Im sure Brent Grimes is watching or hearing of all the dysfunction. My money says only way Grimes a Dolphin in 2014, is if we FRANCHISE HIM. There's $11M in 2014 already.

No way he signs up for his BS in Miami.

Guys wanted Ireland gone....you get your wish.

Maybe, just maybe it's a shitty place to work and everyone around the NFL knows it. Better to dance with the devil you know sometimes, no?

I'm 100% with you. So are anyother dolfans with at least HALF A BRAIN.

Posted by: Sam I Am | January 23, 2014 at 03:13 PM

only way to get a 1st for Wake would be during the season if he is playing great and a division leader loses their top pass rusher for the season. we could maybe trade him for a 1st in 2015.

okay I back pedal on Ross. He needs to get his head out of @SS. These off seasons are a ridiculous circus act.

When you can’t entice the assistant gm from the Browns you have a huge issue.

with marino being fired maybe he will try and work here, lol

Never thought i see the day where the Miami Dolphins are the laughing stock of the NFL.. Its true the franchise is a freakin joke!..

Ross is taking this NFL owner lark way too lightly. If Petersen is telling him to not send any coaches to the Senior Bowl and cock-up the GM interview rounds then he is needing to find some new football buddies.

Look Im not interested in Farmer, I'd like to have Xander and work with that. Im sure the fact that DawnJoe is untouchable will put many GM candidates off. Who wants to come in amongst an Asunder regime.
