Dolphins coaches home while rest of AFC East in Mobile

The Dolphins had a former head coach in Mobile, Ala. during the Senior Bowl practices on Tuesday. Nick Saban attended the practices as he often does and did when he was the Dolphins coach.

The Dolphins did not, however, have a current coach in Mobile for practices or the interviews with players that happen afterward. Head coach Joe Philbin stayed in South Florida as did all his coaches.

Philbin was the only AFC East coach not attending.

New England's Bill Belichick, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan and Buffalo coach Doug Marrone were all at the Senior Bowl. Marrone took his entire staff. Ryan gave his assistants the option of attending or taking a vacation week. And Belichick did not have his assistants attend.

Those are the facts.

So is this troubling?

Is it worrisome that the other AFC East teams -- the Patriots and Jets which finished ahead of the Dolphins and the Bills which swept the Dolphins -- have coaches on the ground at these practices and for the meetings and the Dolphins are the only one that does not?

Is it worrisome the Dolphins are the only NFL team that has neither their head coach nor general manager in Mobile -- an outgrowth of the fact the Dolphins have yet to hire their next general manager?

Well, let me be honest: I'm not in a position to know for sure.

I know the optics of it are bad. It looks terrible for the Dolphins. But that's public relations. That's perception.

Whether indeed it actually is bad is another story. I don't know if the three other AFC East head coaches are picking up nuggets on players that Philbin is missing by not being there. We're not talking just information from practice tape, by the way. Everyone can get the practice tapes and review those if they missed the practice.

I'm talking about nuggets from the face-to-face conversations and interviews with the players.

Maybe those offer nothing. And maybe they offer something tangible and worthwhile. We simply do not know.

It is known Philbin has prioritized his time this week and the Senior Bowl is not the priority. I asked the Dolphins why the head coach didn't attend while all his rivals did.

Philbin's answer through a club spokesman is he did not attend the Senior Bowl because he decided his priority this week was meeting with Bill Lazor and getting  the new offensive coordinator acclimated and up to speed with what the Dolphins are going to run offensively in 2014.

(I'm not sure if that means Lazor is telling Philbin what offense he wants to run or Philbin is telling Lazor what offense he wants).

Philbin also said the secondary reason he did not attend the Senior Bowl was because he was finalizing the hiring of new linebacker coach Mark Duffner.

And obviously Philbin has a strong conviction about his approach because Duffner was in Mobile along with all the other Jacksonville Jaguars coaches Monday morning, but once his hiring was solidified Monday afternoon, Duffner returned to Jacksonville Tuesday and will join the rest of the Miami staff in South Florida Wednesday.

"Anytime you can take advantage of all the opportunities you have to evaluate a player, and certainly if you can see them in person that's a help -- you can see and observe their ability to follow directions in drills and practice -- that's all good," Duffner said. "But with the way technology is now with the video all that is filmed. With proper study of the practice, of the individual sessions, the drills and so forth, you get a great evaluation. It's hard not to."

Look, these are hard times to be a Dolphins fan. The Dolphins stunk at the end of the season. They were shown to be dysfunctional internally. The head coach didn't want to fire an assistant that absolutely had to go and was pressured to do so by the owner. Some assistants that probably needed to go as well -- ahem, 58 sacks allowed -- are still on staff. And the GM search is proceeding at a snail's pace as Miami is the only NFL team without a GM.

Amid all that, is Philbin being in South Florida while Rex Ryan, Bill Belichick and Doug Marrone are in Mobile going to determine the course of 2014?

I'd say there are bigger worries.

There are those that say, "If the Dolphins draft a OT and a RB and if Jordon is the next monster DE/OLB, then the Dolphins will be 9-7 or 10-6 and in the playoffs."

I understand what such individuals are saying and I agree that OL and RB need to be addressed with some urgency (along with other positions). I also agree that Jordon needs to be developed; as it is now, he could be THE bust of the 2013 draft if he doesn't improve dramatically (because the Dolphins used two picks to take him).

But there is something to consider - the 2014 schedule is going to be very different than the 2013 schedule. Teams are going to adjust. No one knows if Tannehill will improve or regress (as he had periods of both in 2013). In short, the team has a LOT of question marks.

There's good reason to doubt this team's future prospects.

From my optic, his absence there seems truly ominous for Joe Philbin. You can probably start to pencil in Lazor for HC.

RIGHT.....and NONE of the other teams have question marks, right? What a dofus! Seriously man, is the sky ALWAYS falling in your world?

I'm curious - after we go 7-9 or 6-10 next year, and Ross let's Philbin go, will he insist that the new coach work well with the GM he's hiring this year? Will we have to miss out on top name coaches as a result? I see an episode of Groundhog Day coming.

The Dolphins just sent B. Gaines to evaluate players. This guy and the rest of the personnel staff may not even be here. What motivation are these guys going to have to do the extra work or to go meet players. Really? I cannot believe that Ross can run a franchise this way.

Bellichick just went to the AFC Championship on Sunday and he is right back at it the next day at the Senior Bowl. That guy just does not rest. Meanwhile, Philbin is sitting on his butt at home. We need to hire a workaholic like that (Bellichick).

Seantrel Henderson is a good pass protector at RT but when blocking, many times he winds up on the floor and takes too many plays off. Pass.

Fire this moron they call clueless joe what a joke !,,,,,a,s,s clown no wonder Jesse agler quit

This is rock bottom folks

Well I guess after that last draf they will throw darts at random players pictures to see who they pick hmmmmm

I am glad that Gaine is at the combine. Probably he and Lazor maybe the only ones back after 2014. I have read that it doesnt matter if Philbin isnt there and are hem and hawing a out Bilichek being there as he is all that. I dont know if it matters or not, but the fact the Bilichek is successful, picks up the right guys and adjusts his systems to those players says something. Maybe, just maybe at skme point the Fins will start emulating a winning franchise and relearn what it takes to build a winner. I dont think Philbin will make any differnce what so ever. If its an optic, and the owner knows everyones eyes are on this team, at what point does he step back, look at the circus clowns and asks, "WTF is going on here and how the "f---k" did I get so caught up in this!"

Perhaps, by some one in a million chance someone will be hired to clean this crap.

I am just singing "it just dont get no better blues"

Chris good point! It is going to be the same old story next year. Next year the GM will only have one year on the job so the dolphins will not fire him. They will fire Philbin and the next coach is going to have to work with him. So no Gruden, Cowher, no big name college guy. The next coach will be a desperate guy looking for a shot, not a well known talent.

That is why Ross needed to clean house this year or just kept the GM, coach, and assistants for one more year and then cleaned house next year.

wow, stupid is as stupid does/says

Maybe Ross should just give up and sell can't he see that he is becoming a laughing stock with 4 billion dollars the joke of the league

Tuna saw the writing on the wall bravo to him

Lets just dig up Joe Thomas and make him GM again. I know a good voodoo doc down in little Haiti who can work wonders on the dead. Then again, maybe my doc friend can belp reserect Philbin and lift the zombie curse.

this team is all messed up. not being there means the draft will suck

Oh by the way we 15 inches of snow already and minus 4 degrees in south jersey and it's going to snow all night

Good Point! Parcells did see the writing on the wall and got the heck out of here.

Philbin's answer through a club spokesman said he did not attend the Senior Bowl because he decided his priority this week was meeting with Bill Lazor and getting  the new offensive coordinator acclimated and up to speed with what the Dolphins are going to run offensively in 2014.

What is so difficult to understand? THE DOLPHINS ARE RUNNING PHILBIN'S OFFENSE!!

it doesn't matter if Dashi says it or Joe Philbin says it. Some of you believe they will be running your offense.

Also, Dashi has never said this is the offense I would like to run.Just that I know what type of Offense J.Philbin wants to run. 4-Wide Zone-Blocking WCO with some spread-option.

Tuna got us an 11-5 year and a division title no accident

I've let Ross have a pass to this point (today). But I'm afraid that as long as he's the owner the fans are screwed. Philbin, and we've had two years to see his work, is totally clueless!

Keeping Coyle was one hell of a call. And he remains to keep young players off the field. If Jordan isn't the player I think he is and my opinion counts for naut, then lets trade him! The proper house for Jordan to reside is Philly and his old college coach. We get their 22nd pick and trade that down to the top of the 2nd and pick up another high 3rd. Or we keep him and new coaches eventually arrive that knows what to do with this remarkable athlete. Doesn't mean he's a 'football player' but Coyle and Philbin, just because they have the titles aren't necessarily 'football coaches'.

I still can't believe that this player and the two young CBs couldn't get enough snaps in real time to even be evaluated!

Failbin said "I'm not picking the talent so who gives a crap about the senior bowl, let the new GM worry about it, I'm taking my family to the Wax Museum

B,u,l,l, Sheeetz on how they can evaluate all so well just using film and technology. Its no wonder the Fins are regressing. So a mutiple SB winning coach, 13 time division winner, kicks your teams ass 9 out 10 times goes down to Mobile and our front office staff (oh wait,,,we dont have one) our coach, oh he is not there either, thinks he needs to explain his six offensive plays to Lazor. Hahahahahaha

If I were Gaine, I would be oh so very cautious. Philbin and DA will kick this dude under the bus aithout missing a bit

I thought I was a pretty patient guy, but each story seems worse than the last one.

Well we can all become Seahawks go seabirds go

I honestly can't stand Joe Philbin

Mark Cuban can buy us

You and I, to my knowledge, has never had a cross word and I don't plan on starting now. But your use of the 3rd person is something that most of us gave up when we were somewhere in the 6-8 years old range. Your using it is like the 35 year old immature moron that wears his hat backwards. There comes a time in everyone's life when they, at least try, to get to that next rung of maturity. Give it a shot!

Joe must go , joe must go, joe must go

If you are hiring a new GM?

Wouldn't you like to show them that you won't get involved with their job?

The Future Dolphins GM is at the Senior Bowl, Why do the Coaches have to be there? When they are getting all the film and the personnel dept is documenting everything for the coaches to look over.

Plus, I rather have my Coaches Coaching than Scouting.

The Sooner Philbin and Lazor can come up with what they want to run, what they have to fix. The sooner T-Hill and the Offense can start getting some of the new concepts down.

The sooner our new LB coach can sit down with Coyle and go over what they need to fix. The Sooner Ellerbe, Misi and the other LBs can start making adjustments to their game. Hopefully he tells Coyle and Philbin what a real LB looks like. Coyle knows secondary but he doesn't understand the front 7 real well.

Whoever are next GM will be, rest assured he is at the senior bowl, likely with his current team. The smart move is to bring back all your serious candidates and compare their notes to what Brian Gaines brings back. That would paint a nice picture on who is the best talent evaluator and who the top prospects are.

Why would the coaches be in Mobile if Mr. Ross guaranteed their employment because they all are loyal and and have integrity. They have their pay checks already in the pocket. They don't think that personal contact and raport with the players in Mobile is important at this time because they can watch it all by video from their own cozy homes in South Florida.

And although Philbin says he is talking to Bill Lazor during this week, I guess he cannot postpone these talks for later on because there would not be time as he needs to start writing all those cue cards with Dawn Aponte for the start of training camp.

Pathetic. No sense of urgency. This is why we ended up were we did. And this is why we will end up where we will next year.

And Armando you prepare yourself to be in the doghouse from here on. Your critical articles are not well taken in Philbin's regime. And I do really mean its a regime. Take notice how Greg Cote put himself in the payroll by endorsing the Ray Farmer hiring. Now, that's a smart sportswriter, Armando.

Tell that to Bellichick that he does not need to be at the Senior Bowl and that he should rely on personnel guys. You have to get every edge you can. You have to find out if players are coachable, get to know their character. I would buy your argument that it is not important for Philbin to be there if other coaches were doing the same thing. I want the coach of my team to copy Bellichick. Philbin should not be out worked by Bellichick. He should be hungrier than Bellichick. Rex Ryan and Moorone are also there. It is a shame that Philbin is the only coach from the AFC East not at the Senior bowl.

the AFC is going to suck when Brady/Bellechick and Manning are gone

Miami Dolphins GM candidate Jason Licht takes job with Bucs

Who can blame him?

And Armando you prepare yourself to be in the doghouse from here on. Your critical articles are not well taken in Philbin's regime. And I do really mean its a regime. Take notice how Greg Cote put himself in the payroll by endorsing the Ray Farmer hiring. Now, that's a smart sportswriter, Armando.

LOL, Armando is probably on Philbin's crap list.

Even Irescum is laughing....

No Offense taken.

But Dashi isn't going to change.

I know it tweaks people the wrong way. Cause some Home-O use to do it.

But I could care less, that Home-O is not around anymore.

Also, It is ridiculous to think that I would act the same way in Person as I would on the blog.

You think YG & Company act the same way in person?

OK, Bad example.

Remember though, Dashi is some Un/Undereducated Dominican Hoodlum that grew up on the streets of Little Haiti, Never graduated High School, but still goes to school as a janitor and rides the bus to and from work everyday. I think it understandable and acceptable that someone with such deplorable grammar constantly refer to himself in the 3rd person.

Blame it on Dashi's Dade County Edumacation.

Is Farmer or Xanders there? Our GM may be there already. the guys we are looking to hire are probably there.

Blame it on Dashi's Dade County Edumacation.

Yeah, blame it on somethin other than yourself, child.

Thank you, thank you very much, I would like to thank the Academy, I'd like to thank my mom and dad, and most importantly I'd like to thank all the clowns that have dotted my life so I would have the experience to spot real true clowns.

Thank you again

Frank beat me to it.

good post..

The Senior Bowl is not that important.

You can count the guys who might be drafted in the first 2 rounds that attended the senior bowl.

Now if it was a Senior Vs Junior Bowl!!

Then Yeah!! That game would be important.

The Senior bowl is for you to compare D-2 and D-3 guys against D-1 guys.

Is T.Mason going?

And about 200 other draft eligible players?

The NFL wants you to think the Senior bowl is important so you can stay tune to NFL network in the Off time.

How does a head coach who does not play players ( because ireland brought them in ) keep his job ? That is not about team.., that is not placing the common good above the individual good. That is spiteful and petty ( and the guy is Head Coach ! ). Someone who wants to win plays those who are performing best.., no matter how they came to be on the team.
Did you read what Mike Zimmer said after the Vikings hired him ? Now that is a guy we should have gone after.. Lazor is probably dreading what he got himself into by now...

You see, signal.

The 3rd person schtick gets certain people all riled up.

Out of respect to you. Whenever I respond to one of your post or have a post referring to you, I will not use the 3rd person Gimmick.

None of us are at the Senior Bowl & we could pick better players than half of the gm's out there. I'm not worried.

that POS Failbin got rid of Vonte Davis for no other reason than Vonte had bigger nads, Failbin is a fraud and a joke. He's never run an offense and he is a complete joke, Failbin and Ireland belong together, in a ditch face down in a cow pattie

Failbin said "I'm not picking the talent so who gives a crap about the senior bowl, let the new GM worry about it, I'm taking my family to the Wax Museum

Posted by: Frank (the ultimate moron) | January 21, 2014 at 09:26 PM

that cracked me up....

The dissension in the locker room considering these are the types of players Philbin WANTS on the team does speak volumes about the coaching staff.

I can't get over the cue cards, that was the kicker for me.

Dashi loves how you take everything literal about everyone else. But we have to accept whatever Buffoonery you want to say or do on here.

If you didn't get Dashi patronizing you. You are slower than even you thought. No wonder your insults are so lame.

Dashi good point that the top guys will not play in the game but you have to find those nuggets. There are some real good players there that will be picked in round 2 and beyond. Guys like Aaron Donald, Daquan Jones, Chris Borland, the DT from Minnesota and a ton of senior OL are there. You cannot build a team on just the first round pick. You have to draft well the whole draft. The point is that Philbin should be there evaluating players just like Rex Ryan, Bellichick, and Dough Moroone. All those guys seem to be putting value on the senior bowl.

Well said Ghost!

AWESOME! These men are revolutionizing both the way FOs are organized, and the way its members are targeted, interviewed and hired. The NFL will never be the same. The Ross Era has begun for real!

Why should clueless Joe go? What does he know about personnel?

With their first round pick, The USFL Dolphins select, Dewey Oxburger.

I understand that everyone wants to say we should do the same as the other coaches.

Belichick doesn't have to install new concepts to his offense. Rex doesn't even talk to his.

I believe some of these coaches just don't want to be with their families.

Plus, Isn't Philbin suppose to show the new GM that he won't mingle with his job?

Which one is it? Do you want the GM to have final say over personnel decisions? Or you want the new GM to ask Philbin for advice?

If the Fins want to show any future GM that they are serious about giving him power over personnel decisions, wouldn't this be a good way of extending an olive branch to him. Showing him the Coach won't mingle in the process unless he wants them to.

Plus, wouldn't other teams get mad when they see Philbin talking to Farmer or Xanders who is still working for another team. That would be one of the main reasons if I am the Dolphins I wouldn't send my coaching staff to the senior bowl. They could be brought up on charges just for talking to certain people.

I don't see any need to rush the GM hire whatsoever. It is far more important to make the best possible hire then it is to run out and grab the first guy you like.
Miami fans don't realize something, you got your way. We as Miami fans got EXACTLY what we asked for.

We shouted to fire Sherman... Done
We shouted to fire Ireland... Done

We got lucky and that idiot in Detroit took our worthless linebacker coach to be his (gulp!) Defensive coordinator.
Ross didn't fire Philbin, because in all truth. He shouldn't. There MUST be some level of continuity.
But now... even after getting 85% of what you asked for... And already having a VERY SOLID O-Co hire and a long time, highly experience replacement for Edwards at LBC. Your whining because they haven't hired the GM...!!!

That senior bowl is a nice place to find a few talented players... But lets all get REAL F'In Honest here... Miami's draft ISN'T going to be that dynamic. There are VERY specific positions that need filled. Miami doesn't have the sort of cap room that say's "Don't worry about it." But they're not on welfare either.

Screw the senior bowl...

There is ONE THING THAT IS IMPORTANT... and it cannot be completely accomplished until everyone who is available is in the hat. There are still teams playing with VERY ELIGIBLE talent guys who would LOVE to break out from under the guy they KNOW they will never replace and get a GM job in one of the best places to live in the USA.

One thing is 100% certain.... If those of you who spend hours on this blog every day whining, pizzzing, moaning and complaining about how "The sky is falling in Miami"..... Your palms are going to grow hair... and you'll go blind.....

This hire is MUCH to critical to stress over what amounts to 15 to 20 decent players and a bunch of JAG (just a guy)... BTW, to the guy who keeps on with the Miami to London trip.... Do you even realize how large a following Miami has outside of Miami..? Do you realize the NFL will shrivel up and fade away before they allow a team out of a destination city like Miami..? There are two teams who may go to London... And only one has a chance and that is Jacksonville. The other would be Buffalo... But before London got them Toronto would..... Miami is not going anywhere.... Write it down... if you feel you need to.

What does it matter? No rookie wants to be a Miami Dolphin, with the exception of "PAY DAY" anyway. They'll come in and just "go through the motions" on game day.

Sort of like the rest of the team does now.
