Dolphins coaches home while rest of AFC East in Mobile

The Dolphins had a former head coach in Mobile, Ala. during the Senior Bowl practices on Tuesday. Nick Saban attended the practices as he often does and did when he was the Dolphins coach.

The Dolphins did not, however, have a current coach in Mobile for practices or the interviews with players that happen afterward. Head coach Joe Philbin stayed in South Florida as did all his coaches.

Philbin was the only AFC East coach not attending.

New England's Bill Belichick, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan and Buffalo coach Doug Marrone were all at the Senior Bowl. Marrone took his entire staff. Ryan gave his assistants the option of attending or taking a vacation week. And Belichick did not have his assistants attend.

Those are the facts.

So is this troubling?

Is it worrisome that the other AFC East teams -- the Patriots and Jets which finished ahead of the Dolphins and the Bills which swept the Dolphins -- have coaches on the ground at these practices and for the meetings and the Dolphins are the only one that does not?

Is it worrisome the Dolphins are the only NFL team that has neither their head coach nor general manager in Mobile -- an outgrowth of the fact the Dolphins have yet to hire their next general manager?

Well, let me be honest: I'm not in a position to know for sure.

I know the optics of it are bad. It looks terrible for the Dolphins. But that's public relations. That's perception.

Whether indeed it actually is bad is another story. I don't know if the three other AFC East head coaches are picking up nuggets on players that Philbin is missing by not being there. We're not talking just information from practice tape, by the way. Everyone can get the practice tapes and review those if they missed the practice.

I'm talking about nuggets from the face-to-face conversations and interviews with the players.

Maybe those offer nothing. And maybe they offer something tangible and worthwhile. We simply do not know.

It is known Philbin has prioritized his time this week and the Senior Bowl is not the priority. I asked the Dolphins why the head coach didn't attend while all his rivals did.

Philbin's answer through a club spokesman is he did not attend the Senior Bowl because he decided his priority this week was meeting with Bill Lazor and getting  the new offensive coordinator acclimated and up to speed with what the Dolphins are going to run offensively in 2014.

(I'm not sure if that means Lazor is telling Philbin what offense he wants to run or Philbin is telling Lazor what offense he wants).

Philbin also said the secondary reason he did not attend the Senior Bowl was because he was finalizing the hiring of new linebacker coach Mark Duffner.

And obviously Philbin has a strong conviction about his approach because Duffner was in Mobile along with all the other Jacksonville Jaguars coaches Monday morning, but once his hiring was solidified Monday afternoon, Duffner returned to Jacksonville Tuesday and will join the rest of the Miami staff in South Florida Wednesday.

"Anytime you can take advantage of all the opportunities you have to evaluate a player, and certainly if you can see them in person that's a help -- you can see and observe their ability to follow directions in drills and practice -- that's all good," Duffner said. "But with the way technology is now with the video all that is filmed. With proper study of the practice, of the individual sessions, the drills and so forth, you get a great evaluation. It's hard not to."

Look, these are hard times to be a Dolphins fan. The Dolphins stunk at the end of the season. They were shown to be dysfunctional internally. The head coach didn't want to fire an assistant that absolutely had to go and was pressured to do so by the owner. Some assistants that probably needed to go as well -- ahem, 58 sacks allowed -- are still on staff. And the GM search is proceeding at a snail's pace as Miami is the only NFL team without a GM.

Amid all that, is Philbin being in South Florida while Rex Ryan, Bill Belichick and Doug Marrone are in Mobile going to determine the course of 2014?

I'd say there are bigger worries.

With that said. Coyle Sucks as a DC!!

He knows DBs!! But that is about it. Nothing special.

The Falcons hire Scott Pioli as assistant GM. Scott Pioli is better than ANY of the clowns we have interviewed. Yet our owner is "Traveling" while our franchise is once again the butt of Jokes and looks totally chaotic in the eyes of the NFL. PATHETIC!!!!

Sigh, nobody knew about Dawn Joe, really? Mando had a blog on Joe and Dawn's relationship laast year.

Man it's always something with you people should we fire the janitors at our facility also I hear they don't do windows

There is no place like home.

Management did invest the dollars last year by getting Reyes, buehrle and Johnson. The team fell flat on its face and the fans went away by July.

Yes Rogers is just happy to make money and not spend year to year. Comparing Yankee passion and blue jay passion isn't even close.

Our dolphins where picked to go 6-10 this year and we went 8-8 nobody thought we could win even 8 games not even Vegas so you know what we are on track

I hope it rains hail and snow at Met Life Stadium.

I hope they pay the price for banning Super Bowls at Dolphins Stadium.

Screw Goodell!!

Marc @ 1:59

The Cuban-born janitor is Mando's source so don't fire him.

There are those who are super positive about the Dolphins. And that's fine. I do not see the team that way -- not after a decade of not even playing a competitive post-season game.

A couple of years ago, the team stated that it was 'close' and had a very talented roster. The only thing that was needed was a good coach. So, Sporano was fired, Ireland retained and Philbin hired.

Well, the team was not 'close' after all. It went from 6-10 to 7-9 to 8-8. Again, after an epic collapse against nonplayoff teams, fans are assured that the team is 'close' and all that is needed is a new GM who can find better talent.

While finding better and more football talent is the key, the Dolphins are such a dysfunctional organization that it cannot get the best talent to sit down for an interview (DeCosta, Gamble and McCloughan). Each of those individuals have played a key part in building elite teams. Teams that have won or played in Superbowls. They have good reputations as well for what it is worth.

The Dolphins apparently wanted Licht but failed to get him. So, the Dolphins are now trying to find Philbin - GM Edition.

Pioli was a disaster in Kansas City, with the Matt Cassell trade beig one of the biggest personnel blunders in the NFL over the past decade.

ALL of his success came when he was working with a coach named Belichick and a quarterback named Brady.

I guess we'll just skip over how he did after he left there, right?

Some of you "homers" need to get a dose of reality it's very bad that the Dolphins don't have anyone representing the organization at the Senior Bowl.

See what I mean, what an idiot right? To make a false statement and then attack the team under the lie? Crazy stupid right? Like super idiotic? Complete moron? Embarrassment to the fan base? I believe all of the above above apply.

Are you qualified to render his statement as false ? If so, explain in detail your qualifications and why his statement is false (a lie).

Of course you can't.

See what I mean, what an idiot right ?

Yes you are.

...and this is the second time this week that I've proven as much.

You're attempting logic and that's good.

You need to improve considerably as a logician. Study science, study Atheism which is rooted in science and logic.

Earlier this week you contradicted yourself...in the same post lol.

Fact is...then you claimed to know.

Next paragraph...

None of us really know...

Bzzzz, that's an F on your paper.

This was great comic relief for me, almost as comedic as The Dolphins operations these days.

As mentioned before, work on your debating skills and your reading comprehension skills as well.

Your name is Phins78.

Whether you were born in 78' or you actually watched Earl Campbell run all over The Dolphins on MNF that year.

Either way you're old enough that you should be better educated.

You have an internet connection.

Use it for what it's for.

...and I don't mean porn.

Btw, it certainly isn't a positive that The Dolphins aren't well represented at The Senior Bowl.

...and they deserve to be criticized.

If you claim that this is a "false" statement.

Then back up your claim with evidence.

Of course you can't.

Yours is an opinion...and a biased, uneducated one at that, born of emotion.

Your description of the homer critic fits you to a tee.

No one knew about DawnJoe's role in taking out Ireland with the petty backstabbing office politics. Every GM is going to take that into account when considering to take the Dolphin job.

Ya'll krazy man. hehehehe

The team is close...first a new coach, now a new GM, next a new owner. That should put us over the top!

Most general managers are right half the time

amnesia @ 2:07

KC has pro bowl caliber players in all phases of the game, Pioli must have brought in some of it.

Mando is an idiot just like most media types they are not fans of the dolphins I can remember when they wanted Shula fired ,all he did was win 10 games a year for 30 years

Oh lord people. How do you dog the GM before the guy is even hired or made a pick?
FYI, Ireland tried to fire Aponte first.
It was his demise.

Kevin Coyle blamed everything on Ellerbee, Wheeler and Jordan.
But he does suck.

Steven Morris looking good at the Senior Bowl, throwing thru the wind, showing good arm strength.

Jeff Darlington ‏@JeffDarlington 42s

Richard Sherman & Michael Crabtree were mic'd up for NFC Championship game. Hear the exclusive audio tonight on Total Access (11pm ET).

Boy did i make a good decision in 2012 to run far away from the dolphins or what?

Mayock is saying Shantrell can start at Tackle.
He's the sleeper in the draft.
We need him. Perfect fit!

Mayock also praised Ms Jonathan Martin too.

Dawn Aponte has a bug behind the water cooler. She reports everything to Ross the way a good corporate solider feels obligated. Ross wouldn't be where he is if he weren't a control freak...and he obviously feels as though he has Dawn Aponte under his control. His way of trying to correct the Dolphins ills is to become more of a micromanager. It's the natural course of things...he has trusted (the wrong) people and it hasn't worked out favorably. Now he has an interest in involving less trust in others...and more trust in the person he trusts the most, himself. Meddlesome owners with football backgrounds, Al Davis and Jerry Jones, they brought down Super Bowl winning organizations when they became more involved. Ross has no background in football as a coach or a player...and the current Dolphins aren't exactly loaded with talent. This has the potential to be an epic failure with a magnitude that The Dolphins organization has never seen in its history. The Dolphins had their expansion years, then they were good for thirty five years, then they mediocre for ten (with two bad years, 2004 and 2007). They have never had a bad era, one where they were 4-12 bad for years. The writing is on the wall. Ross will never see a winning season.

I wish the Dolphins would be put in the same division as the 49ers, Cardinals and Seahawks just to see how 'close' they are to being elite.

Dawn Aponte is from Brazil...I think

Sigh, neither Dawn nor Joe took out Ireland.

Failbin is the organizer, he's in charge of setting the chairs around the table, getting the coffee, pastries. He also sends memos as well as makes copies of meeting reports.

Whose got time to evaluate talent and go to stupid Senior Bowl games. This organization is highly modernized to compartmentalize each specific job. The most common barb at the Davie's complex is:

Duhhhh, that's not my job

Hey hey apple hey hey..........

tastes like chicken

Posted by: Sigh | January 22, 2014 at 02:32 PM

We've seen how close the Phins are to being Elite by watching their last two games. They would quit if they had to join that division.

Typical Dolphins off-season...a lot of waiting, pondering and waffling followed by an underwhelming hire, a poor draft, dumb FA signings and false hope. Which will precede the usual 8-8 season...again. Other than Cleveland evey other NFL team has already made their new hirings and is trying to plan for 2014, but not Miami, they're too busy contemplating the "ifs" again.

it's warm in here

The office politics of DawnJoe has been well reported here and elsewhere for those who wish to know the history of it as it relates to Ireland.

Currently, GM prospects avoid the Dolphins or complain about the structure to such a degree as to show that Ross public statements are not necessarily the reality, but merely PR.

The Dolphins are what their ten year plus record says they are: a cesspool of incompetence.

pretty sure we need to speed up the gm hiring

The only HC worse that Failbin was Rich Kotite in the history of the NFL, Failbins only NFL experience was carrying the clipboard for the OC. He also retrieved the chalk for the classroom chalkboard, I think he also was in charge of erasing all the plays the OC drew up.

tickle the horse behind the ear, he likes that.

Watch for the kick...

Dusty, has to be in by Febraury 15 or this guy is dead meat...

... or February..

better be much quicker than that mark

least garbage pioli is off the market, i was scared they might even interview him

Why hasn't Dawn inked the deal on Grimes' new contract, that's what I want to know?

who said grimes would ink it, they will have to franchise him

Philbin's answer through a club spokesman is he did not attend the Senior Bowl because he decided his priority this week was meeting with Bill Lazor and getting the new offensive coordinator acclimated and up to speed with what the Dolphins are going to run offensively in 2014.

(I'm not sure if that means Lazor is telling Philbin what offense he wants to run or Philbin is telling Lazor what offense he wants).

Philbin also said the secondary reason he did not attend the Senior Bowl was because he was finalizing the hiring of new linebacker coach Mark Duffner.

The Sr. Bowl over the FA ERA (1993) has been invaluable for teams looking to replenish Positions for both starters and back up Positions (raw players with potential on the CHEAP filling ST's positions in the mean time!) Since the 2010 CBA went into effect that games importance has gotten magnified by 10!! The most important currency in todays game are your draft picks because they're CAPPED till Yr-5 when they become UFA's making them invaluable to a team.

The draft before 93 was a 12-Rd marathon with alot of teams taking chances on guys in the lower Rds given your Vet core wasn't going anywere unless you traded them but since has become more of a science with team Scout Departments today having large staffs in charge of feeding the G.M. all of the info. they can in order to make a more calculated gamble. A miss on a targeted player you may need to be a day-1 starter today is one you need to have all of the possible info. on you can or the alternative is blowing up your CAP like Parcells did in order to cover the misses with Vet FA's who may or may not give you a return looking to cash they're guaranteed money.

For the players it's also become a very important game looking to move up draft charts were the difference between being a player selected between the 1st two Rds and being taken much lower having a HUGE impact on your BANK-ABILITY for the next half-decade! In the 80's I saw a couple of Sr. Bowl games out of boredom because as a Lifelong UM fan (alot of SUPERSTAR talent in the 80's/90's) you knew that only the obscure talent went to that game with the higher profile guys sitting out but that's all changed.

In 2010 alone I remember watching the game with Cristian Ponder, Dalton, Kaep and Wilson all playing when back in the day because of the height thing only Wilson would have probably gone. In that game by the way I remember the TV analyst giving an obscure Tulsa FB alot of press it turned out to be Charles Clay who Ireland happened to be scouting. I believe the fact that Gaine is present representing the Org. is maybe an indication of were the G.M. search is going but our Coaching staff snubbing the event is extremely troubling for me!

new article up, looks like we are finally close on new gm

Armondo really needs to quit putting this BS on the web. He's really good at stirring up his peanut gallery pot.

Posted by: fin4life | January 22, 2014 at 03:27 PM

they will be at the combine too

Vick or Schaub would probably start if they're brought in to compete. Regardless of the state of the o-line.

But someone would say that would stop T-hill' progress.

In 2012 T-hill got a pass because he was a rookie.
In 2013 he was supposed to improve with better receivers. The draft didn't help much.
In 2014 he needs an o-line to reduce sacks and reach his potential.
What will he need in 2015?

Will T-hill still be around in 2015 if the Phins don't make the playoffs?

I believe Philbin and T-hill will both be gone and the new GM will be allowed to pick his own crew.

I expect the new GM to bring in a FA QB or pick a QB in the draft.

Just Saying...Have you ever watched a football game???? Just Saying.

Quick question,
Since when can people do work for one organization and be paid for that work accept a job with another organization and take said work to the new organization?
Why would any owner allow his asst gm to take his written notes and player evaluations that he paid for to use at his new job for another organization that they are in competition with?

This is a non story. Good reporting would be telling people that the entire scouting staff is there.

Acting like the Dolphins have nobody there is not good reporting.
