Dolphins fire back on idea of structure problems

When Stephen Ross outlined the characteristics he wanted in his next general manager, high on the list was he wanted someone who would collaborate with coach Joe Philbin in helping the franchise move toward better days.

The reason the Dolphins general manager today is Dennis Hickey and neither Nick Caserio nor Lake Dawson is because Hickey met that criteria. And both Caserio and Dawson weren't prepared to keep Philbin as Miami's coach thus did not meet the criteria.

A team source is telling me Caserio, who was highly impressive in his interviews on Friday and Saturday, wanted to become the Dolphins general manager and then start by cleaning house throughout the organization. He wanted to hire a new head coach.

Dawson was willing to keep Philbin for a time -- probably the 2014 season -- but eventually wanted the ability to keep or dismiss Philbin after the season was over.

That was the problem both men had with the Dolphins structure.

And it was a problem because both men were told by owner Stephen Ross he is completely committed to Philbin as the Dolphins head coach this year and beyond.

The Dolphins are pushing back hard on the idea Miami's GM will have to share power on the roster with Philbin. An NFL source told me earlier today Dawson didn't like the idea that Philbin would have some say -- not full say, but some say -- on the 53-man roster.

The issue, the Dolphins say, came up in practically every single interview including finalist interviews. Each candidate was asked what he would do if he and Philbin disagree on a decision over a player or the 53-man roster.

Some candidates said they would go with the player they want anyway. Some candidates said they would try to convince Philbin to join their opinion but would not take the player if no consensus could be reached. Another candidate said he would move on to another player because he figured Philbin would ultimately not play someone he didn't initially like.

But none of those answers were wrong because, the team repeated to me strongly, the general manager has the final say over the draft, free agency, and the 53-man roster.

Dennis Hickey will have final say over the draft, free agency and the 53-man roster.

The general manager can overrule Philbin on those matters.

The general manager reports only to Ross.

"It's up to Dennis," a club source insisted.

The one thing not up to Hickey will be having a say over Philbin's future. On that, only Ross has that say. And clearly right now he's committed to the head coach.

That Italian cappicola-munching greaseball would have just made a bigger mess than what's already there, like those people always do.

You ever see any Italians landing on the moon or winning the Nobel Prize (unless there's one for toilet cleaning)?

does anyone want to touch my eye, you can even push on my eye I don't care

Easy answer to this mess, dont go to games, stop buying merch and ignore the team entirely.

Ross likes money and if DawnJoe starts costing him money it will get his attention.

Ross how does it feel when almost you entire fan base actually is starting to despise you and your leadership team?

Thus the problem, u cant have 3 people making decisions, My god Ross, u f%^cking idiot, Philbin is damn Moron as a coach,u should of went with a GM who wanted to clean house, that was the right way to go. Next season will have the same issues and u will have to clean house, this is a train wreck. A GM should have final say, not 3 different people. Philbin SUCKS as a coach, u will see this next year again. U should o seen that when they tanked the last 2 games. PHILBIN SUCKS!!!!

Philbin has been handcuffed by the terrible drafting and lack of talent. The guy has been here for only 2 years. He gets one year to reach the playoffs or he will certainly be replaced. Let's all forget about this bull.... and move forward. Hickey is an experienced guy and has done a good job drafting in the past.

How is gods name did Philbin talk his way into a HC job? This guy is not smart enough to coach a pee wee team.

...No we should shut up and take it up the pipe like you would ? No way.

Posted by: Marco | January 26, 2014 at 07:06 PM

Fans just need to put their money where their mouth is, just stop buying tickets for the games, then relax, kick back and enjoy the process.

Philbin should not have final say on anything thing, F$*king idiot

The jury may be out on whether or not Philbin will prove to be a good HC but his intelligence is not in question. He's an exceptionally bright man, even if that is no guarantee of success.

good question, dolfan

Marco,

Your arguments are the weak ones. Just above you erroneously state that our QB only played QB the last year and a half of his collegiate career.

A COMPLETE fabrication. Dude, you are seriously exposing your ignorance. Especially when you attempt to put words in other peoples mouth. Ireland didn't do everything else. But he did find and bring in a few decent players.

Anyone with a Fvcking Brain knows we were close to going 10 - 6 and making the playoffs. Two of the biggest problems were the play calling and the O-Line.

Lazor looks to easily upgrade Sherman. And my point, Hickey **SHOULD** be able to get the O-Line fixed.

Go ahead, be as negative as you think Armando wants you to be. I myself will stick with some perspective and REALITY, Eh?

HeHeHeHe!!!!

All the GM candidates wanted rid of Philbin straight out of the gate, as did Ireland and he stays with this guy, truly pathetic.

Dawn wanted Philbin to stay and has stuck by her strongest alliance so her tail is covered.

Hickey is going to be the Gimp GM of DawnJoes dreams. Look he made the coffee for 15 years in Tampa before they gave him his shot. After getting his big break he play his part as director of pro personnel in a 17-31 effort and his GM and mentor gets booted out on the street.

Sure give the guy a chance, he is nice and makes a lovely Latte.... Why not give one of us a chance too ? We could all watch tape, meet with scouts talk to players etc. Truly pathetic.

Your points are weak mate. You complain because the fans are unhappy with the 7th guy on the list and the rest can't stand they mess they see here. No we should shut up and take it up the pipe like you would ? No way.

Totally idiotic gibberish LMFAO!

Marco, tell us oh wise one, which one of the candidates would you have given complete control to if you were a Billionaire Owner?

Anyone with a Fvcking Brain knows we were close to going 10 - 6 and making the playoffs. Two of the biggest problems were the play calling and the O-Line.

We were so close to 10-6 ? Really 39-7 over the last two games close ? I'd like to see what you would call a blowout ? Maybe the 62-7 loss to the Jags had us just pipped too ? Or am I being too negative for you ?

The team was Just as close to being 6-10 as they were to 10-6.

You lose a few you coulda/shoulda won but the opposite is true as well. Weird how some folks only see the one side of that equation.

As I entered Odinseye I realized I was entering myself, then I realized I was Odin was really small, like a baby carrot, a Gherkin if you will. My very small member entered myself, and I was happy

we have got everything we wanted and needed we got a OC that knows how to teach players how to score and not run side to side on 3 and 1 we have a GM that knows how to find talent OK so lets give want all dolphins wanted a chance.

we ask for this and we got it so lets just see want happens just think were we would be to day if we were calling better plays in the game

we will be in better and in the playoffs just watch

Totally idiotic gibberish LMFAO!

Marco, tell us oh wise one, which one of the candidates would you have given complete control to if you were a Billionaire Owner?

Gamble, Xander, Caserio and De Costa were my top picks.

No you go with Hickey and DawnJoe mate, you know your stuff, it pretty clear to all of us.

Hire the Patriot's guy and let him run the football side including deciding who our coach should be. It is not that difficult.

=========================================================

HeHeHe!!!!

First off, Hickey isn't sharing any power. Ross, WHO BOUGHT THE TEAM WITH HIS OWN MONEY, told them that HE......ROSS.....has final say on the hiring and firing of the HEAD COACH.

Try to get the reality of the situation before posting you Ape Hanger, Eh......LOL?

Secondly, Cesario has never hired or fired a Fry Cook, let alone an NFL Head Coach, Coordinator, etc, etc.

Cesario has NEVER drafted a decent letter, let alone a collegiate footballer.

Bellicheat is the ultimate authority there. Cesario is just a Glorified Gofer Boy.

(I have a sneaky suspicion that you're not quite self made billionaire, Eh?)

Get ready for more of the same underachieving nonsense we have seen in Ross 5 yrs of owning this franchise. He doesnt get it nor will he ever understand how a successful franchise wins year in and year out.

Its really a shame that we the fans must suffer through a bumbling regime and watch our once proud franchise fall further away from a championship team.

I get why Ross loves Philbin so much. Philbin was Ross third or fourth choice and is a yes man with no emotion or smarts to oppose Ross. We dont get the solid GM choice because that GM wants to run his own show and put in place a winning culture.

Truly a shame that we have to endure no emotion joe for atleast two more seasons and probably three.

Be ready for 3 years of no playoffs and below average football on the field.

No one is asking the right question. If some of the candidates wanted to possibly fire the HC, was that before or after meeting Philbin? And was this just an organizational structure issue (where the GM wanted control to do what is necessary to build a good team) or was this a specific issue to Joe Philbin? That's what we need to know. Either these guys just wanted to know how much authority they would have, or they saw (or learned) something troubling about the current HC and believed it may be a hindrance to the team's success.

I understand why Ross wouldn't accept giving someone authority to fire Philbin this year (after he said he was keeping him). But then why not put that on the table at the outset, and ask the candidate if they were ok with that? If so, great, move on, if not, see ya, you won't work. Maybe that might have negated the drama that ensued the last few days.

My next question is if this doesn't work (how can it not right?) who gets the blame? Hickey? Philbin? Aponte? Coordinators? I'd like to think Philbin would be gone if there's another mediocre season, but seeing the way Ross operates makes me highly skeptical.

It's rumored Philbin spent senior bowl week explaining GO and GO-GO to Lazor.

Posted by: dolfan29 | January 26, 2014 at 07:34 PM

No don't say 3 more years of Philbin, just don't please, have mercy. Oh Lord... please nooooooooooooooo !!!

Also, not sure I believe the report about the players. Sure, they're probably amused by all this, but they're paid to play. In the end, they don't care about the FO, as long as they have a paycheck, they'll be fine.

We had two individuals- one involved with a franchise that works miracles with personnel moves and the second who works for a franchise that made mostly poor personnel decisions. So who do we hire? The one who kisses Ross' ass. We lost. Thank you Ross.

Ross is an idiot and Philbin sucks as as coach..last two games of the year!!

This year is already a failure. We continue to shoot ourself in the foot, if the new GM is to succeed he must feel comfortable with those around him. Should have fired Philbin, we just prolonged the inevitable. The right GM is the key to success, he must be on the same page with the HC which makes all decisions that much easier. Can't blame Farmer, or any of the other candidates for backing away, if they are to win don't tie their hands with all this
BS. Another mediocre year at best, where is Shula?

I'm done. My father an Eagles fan his entire life said I don't care who you root for but promise me you will never switch teams. I tried my hardest to not switch from the dolphins. I just can't anymore. This is the worst team ever.

Really thats it folks. Ross is head over heels in love with feckin Failbin. Nice to miss out on the young talent in the NFL. Now we all know, as if we doubted.

ROTFLMAO!

As ALoco would say: Casario is a garage mechanic. He's never done nothink.

Casario is a figure head, a title only you yutz-LOL!

EVERYBODY(except you apparently)knows that Bellicheat is the real authority there. And to top it all off, they've been pretty bad or barely average at best, since Cesario has been on board.

But you go boy, you make your own Billions and then **YOU** can give an unknown, unproven Crack head looking dolt like that complete control of **YOUR** NFL Team.

HeHeHeHe!!!!

So no GM wanted Philbin. Dickey takes the job because he knows it is likely his last chance to find a job for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, whiz owner Ross is the only person in the galaxy that thinks highly of Philbin.

A GM should have final say, not 3 different people. Philbin SUCKS as a coach, u will see this next year again. U should o seen that when they tanked the last 2 games. PHILBIN SUCKS!!!!

It doesn't matter which name you use.

Hickey has complete say on the 53 man roster, the drafts, The players, Free Agency. Aponte has to answer to Hickey.

But you go Bu-oy-LOL!!!!

Makes a BIG DIFFERENCE w/ our to-be FAs - w/o not 2 stay, & market FAs - come or not,&/or we eat up cap overspending.
ALSO, WHAT ON EARTH MAKES YOU THINK THAT IF CHOICE IS CLOSE AN FA WOULD CHOOSE CASPER FAILBIN & this crew?
Naive to think pplayers not affected by ALL the mess here.

at least Casario know's what winning looks and feels like idiot Odin, we ended up with a scrub from Tampa Bay who was trying to find out a way to fire him.

Odin Enters himself quite often, I know for I see all and I am Odin's SphincterEYE

None of the GM candidates wanted to keep Philbin. The players said at the end of the season they don't respect the coaches.

2-2 = 1 in Ross math.

But aponte has Ross's ear and wih the philbin alliance they will bad mouth any move the disagree with and guess what? That leaves Ross with veto power. It's already happened in this FO. I agree with others, how did philbin get this clout.......?? One answer ..... The aponte alliance. So to answer the question originally asked by armando, weak or strong GM ..... Weak is the answer.

What we have learned throughout this process?

Marco harbors animosity towards all women more successful than himself. Or should I simply say, most women.

I am Odin, for I see Odin, and I(Odin) often defecate on myself, and I see it all out of my own Sphincter

I agree with Gllmiaspr. If we get smart with free agency with a win now attitude (sign Albert or McKinney, Mack from Cleveland (move Pouncey to guard), sign Blount and Jones-Drew, resign Grimes and Solai, then draft for the future on each line and linebacker, especially, and then see what happens. The AFC is going to be wide open again...

Weird how some folks only see the one side of that equation.

I know, like Marco. Don't be too hard on the Tard. He went on records as saying he would ley a guy, not qualified enough to be a fry cook, run his multi-Billion dollar enterprise.

Marco so STOOPID-LMAO ;)

Say good bye to our best corner, he's gone

I mean Failbin almost refused to fire Sherman, REFUSES to fire Turner - - a coach clearly unfit & incompetent, & no mention of QB "coach," who cannot coach his pupil how to throw deep to a WIDE OPEN wr.

Or am I being too negative for you ?

================================================

NOPE! Just idiotically biased, Heh Heh.

8-6 with a jets team we just trampled and only the bills after that.

For any team with a good O-Line and Offensive Coordinator, THAT My Tard Friend would be **CLOSE**.

Now Shaddup before you bore me out of here with your idiotic comment ROTFLMAO!

PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE.............?

Only the dumb fin fans would want to take one of their few pro bowlers and move him to a position of less importance. My god are you fools. Pouncey is a top 3 center. A rare breed. A center he is, I could care less if he played guard along side his brother in college.

And you all think you know better than the coaches! Why not say Grimes is really a TE?

I see odin is here to feed the obvious trolls. Marco has him wrapped around his little toe.

"get smart w/FA"!!?

WTF?

We'll be lucky to hang onto Grimed, and that's cuz he can be tagged against his will.

Grimes

grimes cant leave even if he wanted to, franchise the little guy

Gamble, Xander, Caserio and De Costa were my top picks.

No you go with Hickey and DawnJoe mate, you know your stuff, it pretty clear to all of us.

That's it, I'm bored out of here by your idiotic ravings.

I didn't ask you who your picks were Morko. Do you need me to rtype slower?

I asked you which one of the candidates you would give COMPLETE CONTROL too...........?

Gamble seemed like a good choice, but still, I'm not sure I would want to give any of the others complete control. That's what they wanted, but NONE of them have laid down a body of work that would cause me to turn over my nulti billion dollar franchise too.

Cesario........? Complete Control........?

Yeah, RIGHT BUCKY! But you'll never adnit that before last week, you had **NEVER EVEN HEARD OF THE GUY**.

It pretty easy too play tough guy critic when your playing fantacies with someone elses billions, Eh?

Psssssssssssssssssfpt!!!!

I am Odin, I am immature for my age, plus my fanny doesn't make any noise when I fart, just a swoooosh sound. You guys thought I was a grown man huh?? hahaha
la la la, tweedle dee, Yippee do da mama.

What?

OK Ma I'm coming, I'll be right up.

What?
Yes I turned off the washing machine, I couldn't concentrate on my typing.

Yes mom!!
I do have my underwear on, I washed the skidgy marks off your computer chair ma.

They did turn this into a circus and they didn't get their 1st choice or even their second choice but they were impressed with Hickey all along.

A couple things are being blown out of proportion. First off the fact that Bucs didn't interview Hickey isn't as bad as it seems.

The Bucs like the Fins wanted to go outside of their organization and they wanted Lovie Smith to choose his guy.

Secondly the thought that Caserio wanted to clean house is ridiculous. Is he living in a bubble? The Dolphins made it clear that Philbin and Aponte were safe. Like it or not.

I'm not saying I like the way this turned out or was played out but piling on untruths on top of is unnecessary.

I am so impressed by this hire....all this effort to find a guy from a team worse than the Dolphins....a team that didn't see any greatness in him even though they had him in house....and this guy that will be so much better than Ireland....because??????????????

Yup lets give these guys a chance to help us get better we can do this

Ross should have kept his mouth shut through out the gm search this way he would not have looked so stupid

Lesson to Ross don't tell anyone about your business it will make you look better this way no one will know that 20 guys turned you down

Marco

Hang in there. Tomorrow or the next I'll be taking over as GM and badly need a Player Personnel Director. After an exhaustive search (lasting, maybe, 30-40 seconds) I've named you! Money's not all that great but I'm sure you'd work for free as long as you knew I was making a pile of it (I think I spelled that right?). Get ready!!

The bad thing is that Philbin has got a lot of changing to do if we are going to have a chance and he's probably too stubborn for that.

I am Odin, I am immature for my age, plus my fanny doesn't make any noise when I fart, just a swoooosh sound. You guys thought I was a grown man huh?? hahaha

Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley

Statement from Ross: "I am excited that Dennis Hickey is our new General Manager. When we started the search, I outlined qualities ... "

Translation:

Only two people wanted the job. Briane Gaines who we did not want to have the job. Then, Dennis Hickey, whom the Bucs no longer wanted to have a job. Beggars can't be chosey, you know.

The Dolphins will make the Playoffs. Next Season.

I am so impressed by this hire....all this effort to find a guy from a team worse than the Dolphins....a team that didn't see any greatness in him even though they had him in house....and this guy that will be so much better than Ireland....because??????????????

Look at the bright side of it, had Ross been Bucs owner, he would have passed over Hickey and hired Gaines.
