Dolphins fire back on idea of structure problems

When Stephen Ross outlined the characteristics he wanted in his next general manager, high on the list was he wanted someone who would collaborate with coach Joe Philbin in helping the franchise move toward better days.

The reason the Dolphins general manager today is Dennis Hickey and neither Nick Caserio nor Lake Dawson is because Hickey met that criteria. And both Caserio and Dawson weren't prepared to keep Philbin as Miami's coach thus did not meet the criteria.

A team source is telling me Caserio, who was highly impressive in his interviews on Friday and Saturday, wanted to become the Dolphins general manager and then start by cleaning house throughout the organization. He wanted to hire a new head coach.

Dawson was willing to keep Philbin for a time -- probably the 2014 season -- but eventually wanted the ability to keep or dismiss Philbin after the season was over.

That was the problem both men had with the Dolphins structure.

And it was a problem because both men were told by owner Stephen Ross he is completely committed to Philbin as the Dolphins head coach this year and beyond.

The Dolphins are pushing back hard on the idea Miami's GM will have to share power on the roster with Philbin. An NFL source told me earlier today Dawson didn't like the idea that Philbin would have some say -- not full say, but some say -- on the 53-man roster.

The issue, the Dolphins say, came up in practically every single interview including finalist interviews. Each candidate was asked what he would do if he and Philbin disagree on a decision over a player or the 53-man roster.

Some candidates said they would go with the player they want anyway. Some candidates said they would try to convince Philbin to join their opinion but would not take the player if no consensus could be reached. Another candidate said he would move on to another player because he figured Philbin would ultimately not play someone he didn't initially like.

But none of those answers were wrong because, the team repeated to me strongly, the general manager has the final say over the draft, free agency, and the 53-man roster.

Dennis Hickey will have final say over the draft, free agency and the 53-man roster.

The general manager can overrule Philbin on those matters.

The general manager reports only to Ross.

"It's up to Dennis," a club source insisted.

The one thing not up to Hickey will be having a say over Philbin's future. On that, only Ross has that say. And clearly right now he's committed to the head coach.

If any of you would take the time to read Salguero's new Herald column you gain a tad more actual knowledge about this situation than going off on your usual, harebrained tangents.

For one thing, Hickey will NOT be answering to Philbin. Quite the opposite, actually, as it Hickey who gets the final say on all personnel moves and draft selections.

But you have to actually read and LEARN things to know that...and you don't.

Post by Bodine: It is now too late for Ross to change his mind and clean house. He has already scared off every potential hire. I would have just promoted Gaine. This would have made it far easier for him to clean house after our next disappointing season. Now if he fires Hickey after a year, it will be another scar on working for him.

Yeah, that would have been best. No question.

Have not you learned Stephen Ross by now? He never admits to failure, even when ALL evidence indisputably points to that's exactly what it is. Hiring Gaines, beyond the shadow of a doubt, states the entire gm search was one big fat lardy tardy of a failure.

Even if Gaines by happenstance was the more qualified candidate. Ross would never admit to being a shiteater even if he showed up with loose bowel stool dripping from his chin.

who did wenny wanna do that think in 1999 or 2000?? It was the Lemarr Miller time not an er not long enough--Marino was not still play he have retired?

who remember this ?

Heck maybe I will just watch the NFL without a favorite team. My favorite team doesn't exist anymore. Their heyday is so far gone that there is no longer any trace of the character and commitment to excellence that I was a fan of. The franchise as I knew it began to steadily evaporate beginning the day Marino tore his achilles.

No one has said that Hickey answers to Philbin. He answers to Ross and Aponte will answer to Hickey (but she is friends with Philbin, so watch your back Hickey!).

Hickey can draft all he wants, but if Philbin does not teach, develop or play the rookies then what good is that going to do?

Hickey's resume is thin and being with the Bucs for so long is worrisome given their record.

I have but one guava to share with you.

If I had two guavas I would give you one of them.

But I have but one guava to share with you.

OK. Bye!

Bodine,

I think you nailed it. The team we loved in the far too distant past is gone. The 70's, 80's, 90's Dolphins no longer exist.

I kept thinking they would return but each passing year sullies the good memories of NFL football more and more. The 2013 season was only 8-8 but it feels much worse.

I believe it no longer matters who reports to who. The players have witnessed the gross incompetency and I believe they have already mutinied before season even starts.

Players are human too. Do actually believe anymore than 10% of the current players really wants to play for this terrible owner any longer?

I'll never be naïve enough to believe this. Therefore, winning anymore than 5 games max this year, will not come as shocker to me.

Does anyone think Ireland had a good laugh about this GM search? I wonder if any of the candidates gave him a call to get the inside information on the team's 'structure.'

One would have to think that between the last two games and the last two weeks of nonsense, there is no remote hope these players will be inspired to play for this organization.

One thing Ross did, for better or worse, is shield his coaches and GM from criticism this season. Every and any bad thing that happens now will fall squarely on the shoulders of Ross.

I got some guavo to give you Johnny

A look at the Bucs recent drafts is more worrisome than promising.

No one knows if the other candidates will excel or not, but the guess here is that Hickey and Philbin will be here in 2014 AND 2015 unless the team finishes 4-12 or worse.

Any other owner philbin would be toast. 7 points against two terrible teams to get into the playoffs. Team laid down on him and complete failure to motivate. He is not qualified to lead men into battle. I fear a 6-10 season next year will not get him fired.

Did anyone claim that Hickey will be answering to Philbin ? It has been reported that Philbin will have some say. Ross has made it clear how much he likes Philbin. He has also made it clear how much he likes Aponte. Given the fact that Aponte's responsibilities are increasing, it's reasonable to conclude that she will have some say on personnel matters as well. For ex : If she thinks that a player that Hickey wants to resign or acquire id too expensive then she may advise Ross to veto the move. All three will answer to Ross and he will ultimately have the final say. Ross has great respect for Aponte and will likely side with her on many occasions. The Dolphins are a clusterf*ck of an organization at this point. It's going to get worse before it ever gets better. Any criticism levied against the organization at this point is well justified. Even if there are one of two delusional homers who still exist and get bent about someone criticizing "their team."

Phins go 5-11 in 2014.

Btw, Mando's writing isn't worth reading anyway.

Dude writes like a 3rd grader.

He could be a non-earthling if he can help the club choose the right players to make us respectable .

Time to move forward with Hickey. Lets gets some Impact player out of Free Agency.

Just read that THE Bucs have an F grade in THE last 10 drafts

You people are gay morons call us when draft day comes , then call us when training camp opens other wise crawl back into your caves and shut the hell up its people like all of you that the media feeds on ,we are just like any other team exept we are a little inept

CAN U SAY DYSFUNCTIONAL FRANCHISE?

Fans!

We need Timmy Jernigan Defensive Tackle from Florida State For stoping the run. During the Bowl game against Auburn RB Mason was most successful when Timmy was on the side line. DolFans time to (Think Impact Players.

Well, thats still better than Irescum's drafts.

Congratulations, Mr. Ross. Look what you've done. In the past, I've stood up for you and stated many times my respect. I can honestly say, I cannot respect a man who intentionally goes against the tried and true proven principals and philosophies of successful NFL owners.

You've achieved a new low of incompetence, subversion, grand standing, obstruction, and alienation. Your football business strategy is like a painter who paints a house, then applies primer, then tape & masks. In football business, you're a failure of historic proportion.
You have no one to blame but yourself. Yet maybe that blame is the ultimate success...for yourself.

In 2012 (13 numbers not in yet), the only team in the NFL to lose money was Detroit...naturally. But the Phins will continue to make money for years to come no matter the outcome. Isn't that right, Mr. Ro$$? Winning isn't everything, it's about the money.

I call it as I see it; Sabotage.

Enjoy your New York penthouse apartment, New York social clubs, your hob-nobbling with the New York liberal elite. But one day, the people of south Florida are going to want blood...and they'll get it.

I would not be surprised if Ross removes Shula, Marino, Langer, and Taylor from the Dolphin ring of honor and replaced them tomorrow with Hickey, Aponte, Philbin and Wheeler.

Each of the last ten drafts have an 'F' - if true, then Hickey is going to fit right in with the Miami Dolphins.

Yeah this Hickey guy was going to get fired. From the 4-12 Bucs! YIKES!

It's too bad that the Dolphins failed to Suck for Luck but succeeding in sucking for Hickey.

Each of the last ten drafts have an 'F' - if true, then Hickey is going to fit right in with the Miami Dolphins.
Posted by: Sigh | January 26, 2014 at 11:00 PM

Yeah, he's a loser he'll fit right in lol

Quarterback Position: Dolphins need to Draft Tahj Boyd from Clemson in the second round. Considering there are still questioned about that Position with the Dolphins. Scenerio: Tennehill goes down, Matt Moore steps in Who is number 3 QB? We play to Win!

How did the EAGLE and Cowboys Fair when there Starting QB went down late in the season?

Some would debate get linemen. Free Agency Get the linemen now who are proven.

I say draft Johnny Manziel "Mr. Football".

dennis hickey hire is telling it's telling me philbin and his staff best make the playoffs deep in the playoffs or he will be fired by ross in 2015 and either jon gruden or tony dungy who both worked with hickey will be the next dolphins head coach....

Dream on

Not much to say really. Umm Hickey past is not promising, so he will have to prove to the fanbase that he can draft. Sad really, the biggest handicap for the entire team is Philbin. The man who is supposed to be the voice of the team.
Philbin has and will continue to handicap a lot of careers (thill, entire 2013 draft class, hickey, lazor, etc).
Mr Ross is dissapointing the fanbase has noticed and will respond.
I am still an optimist believing the right moves will be made during the offseason in order to succeed this year, lets just take it one step at a time. Hickeys first job is to get back some of our free agents!

So Ross is loyal to "his" people.

He sure isn't loyal to winning.
He isn't loyal to the tried and true methods of NFL success.
He certainly isn't loyal to the fans.

He's a New Yorker.

I'm optimistic that our next owner will do much better.

Next year hopefully Lazor can help thill and the offense progress into a real threat. The pieces are there we just need sone linemen and a reliable first option RB.
The offseason will begin after the Superbowl so Hickey has got lots of work to
He just got here so maybe Mando can give us some insight on this guys draft history

what's wrong with New Yorkers?

Ross is a Festering Puss Maggot

Kile you beat me to it, I was thinking the same thing dude

Hickey is horrible. One of the worst.

"Dennis Hickey will have final say over the draft, free agency and the 53-man roster.

"Philbin would have some say -- not full say, but some say -- on the 53-man roster."

What the heck does that mean?

So Ross is loyal to "his" people.

He sure isn't loyal to winning.
He isn't loyal to the tried and true methods of NFL success.
He certainly isn't loyal to the fans.

He's a New Yorker.

Posted by: AsJoeRobbieRaisesCries | January 26, 2014 at 11:28 PM

Wasn't loyal to Sparano when he went sucking after Harbaugh. This loyalty angle is nonsense. Ross is simply and randomly clueless. He's a right-place-and-right-time imbecile.

Philbin, Aponte, Hickey, Ross...

Just the sound of that is so bad that I don't have to say anything else.

I'm optimistic the next owner will do better.

Philbin -- lost
Aponte -- competent back-biter
Hickey -- who cares
Ross -- football moron

Looking forward to a great season!

This new guy will make me look like Bill Polian!
Hehehe

The players have to be laughing at the incompetence

The next owner will move the team to Los Angeles and we will all be a lot better off for the most part.

Why S73, half the roster is incompetent as well, wouldn't you agree?

I don't think they're laughing. Would you want to work for this organization even with a 7 figure salary?

Posted by: Jeff (retired in weston) | January 27, 2014 at 12:15 AM

on unemployment in weston.

I agree about Ireland. He has to be laughing his ass off. Probably Sparano, Cameron, Saban, too.

I would also imagine that the Stache is not laughing -- he's beyond enjoying anything anymore.

Ireland got to walk away with seven figures...

Yeah, he's gotta be loving this.
