Dolphins, Ireland go separate ways

Jeff Ireland is no longer the Dolphins general manager.

The Dolphins just announced Ireland and club owner Stephen Ross "have mutually agreed to part ways" after six seasons.

The team will conduct an immediate search to bring new leadership to head the team’s football operations.

“I want to personally thank Jeff for his hard work and dedication in building the team over the past six years,” said Ross. “After a series of discussions, we both felt that it was in our mutual best interest to part ways. Jeff was a loyal and dedicated member of the Dolphins and we wish him and his family nothing but the best."

Ireland was obviously not safe after the end-of-season collapse by the team that saw consecutive losses to last-place Buffalo and the New York Jets. Ireland and the personnel department argued the problem was primarily in that the talent was not maximized.

Coach Joe Philbin argued he needed more talent to get better results.

Ross obviously has sided with Philbin.

A club source said Ireland was going to lose much if not all his decision-making power on personnel. Ross intended to bring in someone with personnel powers over Ireland. That was not acceptable to Ireland.

The parting of way is a courtesy to Ireland.

“I’ve spent the last six years with the best organization in football,” Ireland said.  “Steve and I came to an agreement that the best thing moving forward for all parties would be to part ways.  I’d like to thank Steve for all his support and kindness. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing people during this time and I’d like to thank them all from the bottom of my heart."

The Dolphins have not parted ways with assistant GM Brian Gaine. But even if Gaine remains the team is very likely to bring in someone over him.

Now please pick a GM with a football pedigree...hard-nose football person. Please DONT hire a GM with the idea that he needs to work with Philbin. I want a new GM unafraid to sit down with Philbin and talk about philosophy and plans for the future and most importantly personnel.... and if they aren't on the same page then I think the Fins should respectfully agree to "part ways" with Philbin to start fresh.. but I have no issue with giving Phibin one more year to put up and playoff win or get out!

I'm going to go out get drunk and celebrate this like we just WON THE SUPER BOWL!

...LOL @ Robert Duvall. Start calling Philbin Charlie don't coach on Sundays!

Finally rid of the last remaining stench of the tri-fvcked-us!

Think god fireland is gone bye bye ireland

Thank you, God!! What still scares me is that Ross still has no idea how to determine who is a good GM and who is not. He has no idea of anything related to football. I'm curious as to how he is going to decide who to hire. Who is he listening too?

Guess I need a new name.

FINALLY! Ding doing the stench is gone!! Wow. I can't believe this day has finally come. For those of you happy to get rid of the FIRE LAND crowd, I would just like to say we are thrilled to finally be vindicated for all of the Ireland apologists! We are all Fins fans and Ireland's track record was simply UNACCEPTABLE! As for Philbin, I am willing to give him one more year but he is mediocre and not head coach material. That being said, this is a great day!!

Marino for GM... can someone print out the banner!

Guess I need a new name.

Please lets suck next year and get my boy, Winston lol

Good news, long overdue! Too bad if it took a total late collapse for it to happen, but whatever...
Farewell IRA

was a great season now

Here comes Mangini, I could see him taking the job with Philbin already the head coach. Just to get the GM on his resume

Let me get this straight, we had enough talent to beat Patriots, Cincinati, Colts, Chargers (all playoff teams), and Pittsburg, but lose to a then winless Tampa and cant beat the Jests or Buffalo to clinch a playoff spot and everyone thinks are problem is the front office? This screams coaching to me!! Should just have cleaned house completely or stuck it out one more year and cleaned house if no playoffs again. We now have a lame duck worthless coach and no QUALITY GM in his right mind will want to take this job and inherit a coach. While were add it let's hire the GB guy who also doesnt call plays as our next OC.

Almost glad phins collapsed final 2 games to rid themselves of Sherman & Ireland...

I'm pissin myself

Bring in a President of football Ops and make Philbin the HC/GM.

Apoo won't be the GM.

Ross must be getting some solid advice somewhere. Hopefully new GM wants his own coach.

stripping Ireland was a gentle push out the door.

nobody takes a demotion and stays.

winston was not impressive at all last night. not much for an arm , not fast

wasnt pioli the one who killed kansas city?

I hope you're right Clee.....boy do I ever.

While were add it let's hire the GB guy who also doesnt call plays as our next OC.

Can't blame fans for their joy but there's no reason to expect improvement if a) Ross continues to meddle in personnel matters b) Ross hires a lackey who can't tell the owner to back off without getting fired.

Can't resist..
Can we all agree that his firing was not the fault of Jeff Ireland?

pioli is awful, they wont make that mistake. id love king carl though

I think I have a woody!
I know I have a woody!
Praise the Lord!

2014 is another rebuilding year. Philbin will be a lame duck coach and the new GM will tolarate him until he has to.

I'm hoping the next GM will be bill polian. The man has the track record and success rate in all his stops in the NFL.

C'mon Ross. Stop with the wishy washy types and bring in a respected personnel guy to lead the front office. You won't be sorry with polian

Dusty Bottoms......you're right, he had a bad game. He's human. Doesn't mean he isn't going to be a serious QB prospect. I mean if Tannehill is then anybody is...

the stench is lifting

I agree, nothing worse than 6yr old "dead tuna"!

much better qbs than winston in draft next year. marriota for one

I definitely haven't been a fan of Ireland, but I think it was more bad coaching than bad personnel. Also, I get the feeling that Philbin might've been the guy responsible for some of the bad personnel decisions.

For instance, Ireland was the GM when we traded for Brandon Marshall. I loved that move. He was also the GM that traded him away, which was dumb (especially looking at things now and seeing as how Tanny missed at least 36 opportunities with Wallace wide open deep by severely underthrowing him -- Wallace isn't a "go back and get the ball" type of receiver, but Marshall is). BUT, did Ireland make this move on his own, or was it because Marshall wasn't a "Philbin guy"?

People also like to talk about how Karlos Dansby had a great 2013 season and we let him go for a lesser LB. True. But is it just a coincidence that he had great seasons before Miami, mediocre seasons with Miami and then another great season after Miami?

Vontae Davis finished as a top 10 CB according to PFF...was it Philbin or Ireland who thought he wasn't good enough?

Even with Reggie Bush... Even though his Detroit rushing numbers were on par with what he did at Miami. He caught 1.4 more passes per game and got 17.2 more receiving yards per game with Detroit. The coaching staff consistently failed at making use of his pass catching ability in creative ways.

Then there's the poor use of some of the draft picks currently deemed "busts" by some. Despite averaging more yards per carry and yards per reception than Daniel Thomas, the coaches still continued to put DT in the game and never let Lamar Miller really get into a rhythm. Dolfans like to hate on Miller, but he averaged 4.0 yards per carry running behind one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. For some reason, they give Tannehill a pass for the 58 sacks, but blame Miller for the lack of a running game. The coaches claim this was because of pass protection, but PFF ranked Miller as a top 5 RB in pass blocking while DT was near the bottom. Maybe they're wrong, but my "eye test" agrees with PFF.

This has gone on too long, so I'll stop with one more even though there are many more examples -- and that's with the use (or lack of use) of Dion Jordan. He seemed to be disruptive whenever he was on the field. He just never seemed to be on the field. And outside of covering TEs on occasion, they never used him in super creative ways like the staff would talk about with the media. Is he a bust or did the coaches just fail to use him?

That's just my 69 cents...

Yez but the draft letdown and 6 years of waste with no playoffs is enough.

Shabat Shalom, Mr. Ross.

Ok great great great news now stop hating on Philbin, he did pretty good considering the talent or lack there of he was given. He improved 1 game over last year with no o-line and crappy defense. Now Ross hire someone with GM experience who can bring in talented football players and everyone will see that Philbin is a good HC. He did hold this team together during the Richie and Jonathon fiasco i doubt any of you could have done better.

db...agreed, Winston too slow and plodding for me. Kinda reminds me of JaMarcus Russell, big guy, strong arm but not NFL smart.

Thank You Stephen Ross; It's time to buy season tickets....

The black cloud that resides over davie Florida is said to be pushing south towards the ocean.

Fans said to be taking to the streets and high fives everywhere for the first time in years.

One little boy only had this to say. "I can now know what a winning football team feels like"

can you believe that POS Ireland didn't even thank the fans on his departure. Ungrateful POS

wait and see who comes in to celebrate..just saying

Phins next move will be the wrong move as long as Ross in making the decisions.

So rejoice Phins fans.

The firing of the incompetent Ireland is as good as it gets.

The Heat wins championships and other NFL teams win playoff games and Super Bowls but if you're a Phins fan you get to be excited over a firing.

Loser franchise, loser fans...firing the GM is reason to celebrate lmao.

Do they pass out rings for that ?

No playoff wins since the hanging chad era.

this is the best season in the last 6, I am so proud of this team. I feel so alive. I'm going to stay positive now for a whole year

We already did that with our HC.....

They fired the wrong guy.

It's about time. Ireland and Larry Joker look alike should have been fired midway thru the third quarter of the Jets game.

You are going to see feeble Philbin crumble like a Saltine without tough guy Sherman around,

Hearing Aponte or Carl Peterson. Neither one is a step up in my opinion

The Brandon Albert deal, would have probably saved the season and Ireland s job.

His awful belief in Martin backfired in the most monumental fashion ducks.

If Dawn Aponte is named as a replacement I'll jump off a bridge.

Aponte is going to have say in new GM not be the new GM....

And yeah, pass on Peterson...

The Dolphins just made the MISTAKE OF THE FRANCHISE! There goes our chance to win a championship.

Jeff Ireland can only go out and get pro-bowl players like Brandon Marshall, Reggie Bush, Cam Wake, Dion Jordan etc.

The problem has always been the coach not the talent. Sparano and FAILBIN or loosers!

Jeff Ireland will be the hottest GM commodity this offseason teams will be breaking down his door to make him thier next football CZAR and he will bring championships to the that team

Steven iRoss,
I love you man, *glug, glug ahhh*

Mr Ross your getting there. Please let the new GM have the power to fire Philbin. This needs to be a clean slate. Mr Ross you have the money. If you like Philbin as a man pay him to clean your pool or something, just dont let him coach our team anymore please..

They are going to talk about the Dolphins on NFL network in a Min...

Espn rumors Dawn Aponte moves up. As long as Ireland's gone we can dream new ways to be sick.

NFL Network's report came from former Miami Herald Finsider Jeff Darlington and he stated he was told that this was indeed one of the possibilities. If this happens I feel the team sinks further! The hope I have after hearing the report is for the other speculated possibility of a Football strong man (Czar) to have final say with (do the buying) while maybe Gaine shops for the groceries.

IRA you missed your calling. You could have a career in comedy.
