Dolphins, Ireland go separate ways

Jeff Ireland is no longer the Dolphins general manager.

The Dolphins just announced Ireland and club owner Stephen Ross "have mutually agreed to part ways" after six seasons.

The team will conduct an immediate search to bring new leadership to head the team’s football operations.

“I want to personally thank Jeff for his hard work and dedication in building the team over the past six years,” said Ross. “After a series of discussions, we both felt that it was in our mutual best interest to part ways. Jeff was a loyal and dedicated member of the Dolphins and we wish him and his family nothing but the best."

Ireland was obviously not safe after the end-of-season collapse by the team that saw consecutive losses to last-place Buffalo and the New York Jets. Ireland and the personnel department argued the problem was primarily in that the talent was not maximized.

Coach Joe Philbin argued he needed more talent to get better results.

Ross obviously has sided with Philbin.

A club source said Ireland was going to lose much if not all his decision-making power on personnel. Ross intended to bring in someone with personnel powers over Ireland. That was not acceptable to Ireland.

The parting of way is a courtesy to Ireland.

“I’ve spent the last six years with the best organization in football,” Ireland said.  “Steve and I came to an agreement that the best thing moving forward for all parties would be to part ways.  I’d like to thank Steve for all his support and kindness. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing people during this time and I’d like to thank them all from the bottom of my heart."

The Dolphins have not parted ways with assistant GM Brian Gaine. But even if Gaine remains the team is very likely to bring in someone over him.

Now let get to fixing this mess

OK all you that are happy, now what? Ireland will move on and have success with a good organization. If he gets picked up immediately as a GM it will prove that he was respected around the league and that it is Ross that knows nothing about football. Philbin's set Ireland up for failure here.

And yes those that are asking for Marino as GM are dead wrong. Are you kidding me? Really? I love Marino as any dolphins fan but he was just a good QB. He does not have the intelligence that it takes to be a GM in the NFL. If anyone remembers Dan Marion scored a 15 on the Wonderlic.

Damn!!!! Sorely going to miss him!! I wish he could of stayed longer. He did the franchise right, by ruining it. I'm so glad!! Ross should have gave him another extension......

Philbin on HardKnocks dealing with Chad and Vontae was as wimpy as an american processed cheese food sandwiche on white bread.

I say we go get the assistant GM from the Sehawks or 49ers thos are the most talented teams in the NFL especially the Seahawks

Philbin states that the team didn't have enough talent?? Seriously?? What did Ireland do this off season?? BROUGHT IN TALENT!!!!! It is not his fault if Philbins staff couldn't utilize the talent well enough.

Eric DeCosta will not let talent leave us. He will help us to keep the talent we have and then add some more. Each year we lose so much talent that our acquisitions keep us at 7-9, 8-8 this must stop NOW.
GET DeCOSTA NOW and let the fun begin!!

I'm glad its done but it should've happened 5 years ago. And I honestly think ANYONE will be an upgrade to the totally incompetent Ireland. Everything he touched turned to busts.

Bill A, shouldn't you be sucking jesus's toes right now?

Now that Ireland is out, the best team that can happen is for the new GM to fire Philbin. If he is not fired immediately then this franchise will be set back for years.

Hopefully, Ross does not go out looking for a GM that wants to work with Philbin. That will definitely eliminate all good GMs from contention.

remember Pat White in the 2nd round. That was the brilliant talent evaluator Parcells and Ireland. Yeah we're gonna miss them.

I'm sure jesus will be proud of your missions to kill his children LOL. God are you dumb!

Craig M,

You might be correct regarding Philbin but the wicked witch who unloaded elite players without having an adequate talent level to replace that elite player has been unloaded. No GM is without his mistakes but this guy made fundamental errors of enormous consequence.

Get the assistant GM from the Sehawks or 49ers both of thos teams are loaded with talent

not necessarily, the new GM will get a 4 or 5 year deal and can decide on Philbin after 1 year.

The Jets did keep Ryan and the GM is not complaining.

I usually do not jump on other bloggers for having a differing opinion....but REALLY??? Do you SERIOUSLY believe that Ireland will have a GM job??? Right away no less?? REALLY????

Ireland couldn't get a job as GM of a Blind One legged Midget league football team. He has no credibility and no record to stand on!!

I get the feeling right or wrong that there was more to the Philbin / Ireland relationship than was being reported.

Maybe Rosss is being loyal to Philbin because he likes him but I think the guy truly wants to win more than he is worried about hurting feelings.

If Ireland truly wouldn't work with Philbin on personnel then there was no way it was going to work.

Maybe the group of advisors that Ross assembled gave Ross more information than your giving him credit for.

“I want to personally thank Jeff for his hard work and dedication in destroying the team over the past six years,” said Ross.

Bill A,

What talent leaving are you talking about? If you're talking about Marshall, Davis, Bush, Long and Dansby, that's all Philbin. You know...the guy thats still here. He couldn't handle the personalities that would stand up to him, so he wanted those guys gone. Philbin only wants a certain TYPE of player here. Never mind if the guy can play football or not. If he sticks around a while, its just a matter of time before he'll run Mike Wallace out of time......

WATCH......

Like LeBron said in his first championship. It's about Damn Time. Time to celebrate. :D !!!!

promichael might be dumber than kris, if that is even possible.

I still hope that Ross doesn't wake up tomorrow morning.

eric decosta for gm

Folks, ENOUGH with the 'what respected GM will come here?" crap.
PAY ENOUGH, and they will come.
It's not about Philbin, they can fire him now, or later. Its about WHO will Ross ask to "assist" in the decision.
Personally, I'd offer Ozzie Newsome the GM/CZAR gig and add 50% to his present salary, but that's just too out of the box for Ross.

But PLEASE don't hire from WITHIN. That's like a 2nd rate composer stealing from himself, when it's much more profitable to steal from Mozart.

Great post Craig! It was Philbin that did not want to deal with Marshall, Bush, Long, Dansby and these were great players that Ireland brought in.

The two who had to go have. I have no issue at this point retaining Philbin I think he can coach given something to work with. To that point Ireland was average and the results have been average.

Craig I don't agree that Philbin ran those players out of town. The proof for my theory si that Philbin wanted Cogs gone last year after the golf course debacle and Ireland would not allow it. I think that Ireland decided who would stay or go. Further proof is that Armando reports above that Philbin is still here because Ireland didn't get Philbin enough talent.
BTW I also want Philbin gone just for the record. I stated that the ENTIRE Mgmt from Gm down to water boys should be gone back in October during the bullygate embarrassment.

I had griped about Ireland for a long time, and I'm happy he's gone. I'd like to know what Ross is thinking about replacing him. Pioli is a good choice although being married to Parcells daughter is a red flag. Bringing in any Jets people is going to really suck. Scary because Ross seems to be talking to a lot of them.
Does he extend Philbin so he's not a lame duck? Firing Sherman and bringing in a new OC as well is going to put a lot more pressure on Philbin. It seems like Ross is either unintentionally or purposely setting Philbin up to fail in his 3rd year.

Team was 8 and 6,should have won at least 3 more games. That falls on crappy coaching staff .Philbin is not HC material.

Nah, Ireland traded Marshall when he mistakenly thought he was getting suspended. He got Michael Egnew for "The Beast".

The closest FIRELAND gets to a stadium is the peanut vendor he was born to be. Except his bags will be full of acorns.

Ross should just clean house.

Thanks lint, coming from a moron like you that's a compliment. Now get ready for bed so you can get up for school in the morning. You should change your handle name from lint to trash.

Enough for me tonight....good night everybody. Celebrate a new day DOLFANS!!

WellBill, we agree on that point. In my opinion both Philbin and Ireland should have been given one more year but if not I would have fired them BOTH.

I don't believe Ireland didn't get Philbin enough talent. I believe he gave him everything he needed to succeed EXCEPT a competent OL. This team was good enough on paper to win one of those last two games. They weren't. Close to winning either one and thats on the coaches.

When Philbin comes in and one of the first moves the team makes is to get rid of Marshall, that tells me who's calling the shots. Not saying Ireland shouldn't have been fired because the OL was in fact HORRIBLE but to. Think all personnel moves were made only by Ireland is to live in a bubble.

Ireland never in his life drafted a playmaker.

IMAwriter, get real. Why in the world would Ozzie leave an organization that treated him well for 10 years to come to the dysfunctinal fins???? He already makes well enough.

Some of you guys are so stupid. You think you can just make an offer and get what you want. Wrong.

Craig and Orlando,

I think you guys are going overboard with the players Philbin didn't want thing.

Ireland tried to resign Long for one but correctly didn't believe his recent play was worth the $10 million a year he was asking.

He tried to get a deal done at his price (as dashi likes to say)but was unable to get it done.

The trouble is back-up plan failed. I didn't think it was a terrible plan at the time although I was hoping for the Albert trade just to be on the safe side.

Martin was selected in the 2nd rd the year before just for that reason. It was risk though ad it didn't work out.

promichael, that is your best response? so elementary school. just as i expected. give it up.

For all of you who are excited and think "the new GM" will get rid of Philbin, bad news...He won't. Why? Because Ross LOVES Philbin. He loves him as much as he loved Ireland a few years ago. Expect Gaine to be promoted, or one of Ross' buddies like Mangini...Ross will make sure the new GM is on board with Philbin...GUARANTEED...You can bet your mortgage on that...So before having your equivalent of an orgasm, think again. Sorry.

Omar Kelly reports that there are no GMs worth giving total control to. So, we basically got rid of Ireland and have no plan in place. My guess is that it will bee Aponte. Good Luck with that!

A new rookie GM is going to start getting rid of players. Welcome to hell Dolphin fans. It is time to start all over. Don't be surprised if the dolphins go 3-13 next year.

Somewhere Craig M is crying in the corner!

My first thought on the Marshall trade was uh oh these guys are two peas in a pod (Philbin and Ireland).

We all knew Ireland's view on "divas". We'll see if Philbin can figure it out but you can't have a team without some characters.

Orlando,
Omar??????????? That guy is a turd that don't flush. Nothing more. He makes crap up all the time. He is a useless inept reporter. He is an idiot loser.

If you are reading Omar, you are an idiot too.

stop posting your opinions as fact. you have NO idea who got rid of those guys or why.

stop being such a blow hard!

Damn it! Now all those Julio fans are going to be ripping their chimichanga farts into my plastic flesh. Ireland was the best thing that ever happened to me.

People no liking his move are really out of touch.

Yea they beat a couple playoff teams They also lost to bottom feeders.

This aint a well stacked roster. It's one with lost of holes. And the biggest whole, the OL, Ireland has been trying for 6 friggin years to fix it.

It's been utter incompetence on his part. Bring in Pioli, give Philbin this last year to try to make it right. If not, change direction.

To me, Turner, The QB coach & Coyle need to go. A new Gm will come in with no bias towards Tanne & be able to make a truly fair assessment of him since he has no allegiance to him.

Dolfan rick,

Ireland was the one that brought Marshall to the Dolphins and he was a Diva then. Philbin comes in and they get rid of Marshall.

Dansby and Burnett gone. The fins then immediately start brining in soft players. Enter Martin and Egnew. The defense goes from top 10 to mediocre. The offensive line goes from having maulers to weak wimps like Martin. This demise is all Philbins fault.

Omar???

LMFAO!

Some of you are so gullible you think anything in print is news. Omar is a limp jack off with an IQ of 2.

How can Ross keep Philbin as coaching was the thing that killed this team????????????? and now you have to sign a new OC????????? clean house and let the gm hire a new HC

DING DONG THE WITCH IS DEAD. THE WICKED WITCH IS DEAD.

lint,

If your coming out trying to contact guys on this site. Choose someone else who might be of your orientation...
Good luck with that......

IT'S THE QB YOU FKN MORONS Eh.
The SUCK ARSE QB GETS 2 PEOPLE CANNED BECAUSE HE IS A BIG POS AT QB Eh.
And YOU FKN HOMERS ARE HAPPY.UNTILL THAT POS AT QB IS DONE THE barbies will alway FKN Suck STUPID Eh?

Omar is clueless.

Ding dong the witch is dead!!!

Orlando, I know you wanted to keep Ireland and I have no problem with that at all. My question to you though is: How many more losing seasons does it take? How many Pro Bowlers has he drafted? All that $$$ he had for spending and all those draft picks and all you can come up with is 8-8? That's unacceptable, I'm sorry. Is it just HIS fault? Absolutely not. He is, however, responsible for that horrible o-line that almost got Tannehill killed. He is responsible for signing those 2 stiff linebackers that we are now stuck with. He is responsible for the fact we have no running back. He did sign some pretty good players in Wallace and Grimes, but that's definitely NOT ENOUGH. In my opinion anyway...

Orlando,

Your gonna tell me the guy that just stepped down because he didn't want his personnel power stripped let Joe Philbin make his picks after all the time he put in scouting???

I'm saying Marshall was a mutual agreement. Ireland had 6 years to win. If Philbin doesn't win he'll be gone too.

Only a GM worse than Ireland would take this job. A beginner.

Yeah, it is largely the QB. But Ireland and Sherman brought him in.
