Dolphins to interview GM finalists this weekend

The Miami Dolphins plan to interview at least two finalists for the vacant general manager position starting this weekend, according to source familiar with the process.

The club -- which has been in contact with the seven men who already interviewed for the job -- will begin calls to six of those men in the next few hours to either 1. tell them they are one of the finalists and schedule the second interview or 2. thank the men for being part of the process and say the team is moving in a different direction.

The Dolphins had hoped to interview at least one more candidate this week, most likely plucked off a playoff team that participated in Championship Weekend last Sunday. But those hopes faded for unknown reasons and the likelihood that will happen are now slim.

The Dolphins plan to hire their next general manager well before the Super Bowl in 10 days and there is even optimism within the organization a new GM could be in place by Monday, the source said.

Earlier Wednesday, the NFL Network reported the Dolphins tried to hire Arizona's Jason Licht when the team caught wind of the fact Licht was offered the general manager job in Tampa Bay.

Two sources -- one very close to Licht and a Dolphins source -- said the report is not accurate.

The Dolphins indeed found out Licht was offered the Tampa Bay job and contacted him to inform him he'd be would be one of the finalists brought in this coming weekend. The Dolphins wanted to give Licht the option of waiting for the finalist interview before making his decision final.

Both sources confirm Licht decided to go with proverbial bird in the hand, taking the certain job offer rather than waiting to see if he would make the cut in Miami to have two job offers.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross will be part of the finalists interviews and will be the man hiring the new GM. He has not left the country this week.

Aside from Licht, the Dolphins have interviewed Cleveland's Ray Farmer, Tennessee's Lake Dawson, Pittsburgh's Omar Khan, Tampa Bay's Dennis Hickey, Detroit's Brian Xanders, and in-house candidate Brian Gaine.

One of those will be Miami's new GM perhaps as early as Monday.

Dashi,

In the game keep an eye on LSU Safety Craig Loston (a Fins need!) I saw LSU a couple of times this Yr. and this kid is flying under the radar! Would be a nice 4th Rd selection! The OL players we know about with the U's Linder and Henderson (a probable riser in coming months!) being guys we should take a long look at given their in our own backyard but again the incoming G.M. won't have had that luxury!

DC....you sound a little "jaded" since the last time I read your post. What happened?

just make sure they get the nebraska corner

NH, what I don't see on that resume is: prior experience as a carpenter and can turn water into wine. Because what Miami needs is someone who can create miracles.

DC, would it make you feel better to know that Mike McCarthy is not at the Sr Bowl either.... geez, get a tittie in your mouth already, take the edge off...

This team fought hard in all it's games this year we should have beat Tampa , buffalo gm 1, Carolina , but by the end of the year the lack of adjustments cost us hence the jets game and the bills game what does that tell you? Answer is the head coach lacked what it takes to put his team in a position to win , with that said will he learn from his mistakes

DC I agree with you seem like the orgaization is doing eveything the wrong way.

MIT,

You know I am not going to make an opinion without at least looking it up first. I've had the list for a couple days now. Just waiting for one of those people saying the senior bowl is important to point out the players that they are watching at the senior bowl. If it is so important you should know who is playing in it.

Yesterday, I said not one Top 10 pick will be participating in the Senior Bowl. I would go as far as Top 20. Maybe 1 Linemen.

Agreed. Most those players on that list look like late round picks at best. And for that I am with Dusty. I rather draft a Junior over a senior.

Miami needs to do everything to grab Eric Ebron. He's the best TE prospect since Vernon Davis. Chances are they'll draft some bozo OG or reach on a DE or something. This team is a clown college with Mr. Magoo Ross running things and his concubine Philponte.

thed they better take the corner from nebraska

E

dusty, Alabama won national titles on account of their defense, not on the shoulders of their QB.

NH, reality set it. Which led to bitterness. Which soon will turn into resignation. Every time I try to think optimistically, I think about the 2012 New York Jets, the Geno Smith, Clyde Gates, Lex Hilliard New York Jets. The 2nd best team in the AFC East, no offense-having New York Jets.

Oh, and losing to a 3rd-string QB....NOT ONCE...but twice. Yeah, that about does it for optimism.

DC I agree with you. Seem like the Fins organization cant get it right

sorry, meant the 2013 NY Jets. We'd have lost twice to the 2012 Jets, what was I thinking!

mccaron won 3 nat titles, with many big plays from him. and no course i dont want him in nfl

Mark, the fact that McCarthy is resting from being bumped from the Playoffs, no, that doesn't make me feel better. I'd feel better if I knew Miami had an answer for Thad Lewis (besides hope the STARTER PLAYS). I'd feel better if I thought Miami would fix their OL (after 6 tries and failures). I'd feel better if Chad Pennington was still an active player (and a FA). Since none of those are possibilities, no, I don't feel any better.

f4l, capped or not - there is only so much talent to go around and the truth of it is most guys drafted after round two do not ahve NFL starter talent. Over 90% actually...

I disagree with you here, I'd love to see a statistic but since the draft was shortened in the FA ERA there have been alot of lower Rd selections that have panned out. If you look at some of the players selected by us alone there have been a few who've gone the route and flourished at a high level. In 2010 it was Charles Clay who I watched in this game and we took Rd-6! Paul Solia as the only saving grace of the 07 draft!! Zach and JT need no mention but how about an obscure Safety out of UNLV JJ drafted in 93 for Dallas going on to maybe the best in Fins history after JJ later signed to play for us in 97 in B.Marion.

I could go on but you get the point! Our last great talent evaluator JJ put alot of stock in this game and identifying the smaller school kids Vs. better talent were he identified a HUGE piece of his great wall of Dallas in an OT who played Div NAIA College ball (Erik Williams) and he also got his Center Mark Stepnoski (GREAT technician of the game) in lower Rds. IN HIS 1ST GO AROUND in 89 got UNSUNG HERO DE Tony Tolbert out of little Texas El Paso in Rd-4. Identifying kids today is more of a science and because of the economics of the CAP ERA alot more make NFL rosters than use to!

After such a lack of playing time from the 2013 draft class our beloved coach Philbin should be there. The fact that he is the only HC not there is pathetic. Is this man really serious about this team ? I think not.

Philbin is as apathetic on the sidelines as he is in the draft process. What kind of message does this send to the rest of the team, one of neglect and contempt thats almost impossible to believe.

Im predicting that we go 7-9 next year at best. We have so many areas to address on the personnel side, but my main concern is with the coaching staff starting with Philbin.

dc thad lewis did nothing vs us. we didnt score at all in last game vs them. gave away first game. none of it cause of awful lewis

The beauty is dusty, we'll get to find out. When Winston and Cam Newton are trading NFL MVP awards, we'll revisit this and see what you think about Winston then.

neither winston nor cam ever will winston wont be anything in nfl. cam is solid but wont ever climb the mountain

F4L,

You have made the most logical point on why the Senior bowl is important. As always one of our most informed bloggers. Still don't consider it that big a deal that we need a GM before it and that our coaches have to go.

The point most bloggers are making seems idiotic to me. Because everyone is going we have to be there.

You know I am going to be watching the game. Specially our boys from the U. Mike James RB did damage last year if you remember. I will go as far as saying I will be cheering for all the ACC kids. I like T.Boyd as a QB. And L.Thomas has all the tools.

I actually believe the North Team will destroy the South team. Just on QB play alone.

Will look at the Safeties. It is one of our needs. Thanks for pointing out the kid from LSU.

Will also be looking at the LBs. I like C.Jones from FSU. And have seen the kid from Wisconsin a couple times. I believe the Senior bowl this year has better LBs than D-linemen which usually isn't the case.

dusty, Winston is a freshman who put up absurd numbers. He"ll def be a better prospect than Ryan "I Cant Throw The Ball Accurate 15 yards down the field" Tannehill

Dude Play to play on the GM hiring.Do you think the final decision will clarify the direction of this franchise in disarray or will it just open up another can of worms for this blog and the media in general.Stay tuned to this blog and lets see what can be uncovered and discovered.

Although unpopular Saban is very good at scheming D but his greatest asset in Alabama has been identifying, recruiting and signing OL! His OL's are also the reason someof his RB's went in Rd-1 while Lacy suffering the NFL hangover on Bama RB's dropped! The Fr. RB they have now who played some in the Sugar Bowl is a BEAST and will be the next great RB to go into the NFL. He's all of 18 Yrs. old and was CLOWNING the Vet Sooner D while slicing them on long TD runs!

ray not sure winston made one throw over 15 yards this past season. guy is nothing

I agree with Dusty here.... I mean the only diff between our Qb and Cam last year was the turnovers... and not by that much ... and nobody is sold our qb will be here for the next ten years, including me.

Trading off MVP awards... I wouldn't bet on that right now.

Posted by: THED | January 22, 2014 at 04:16 PM

To many pressing needs for this to be our pick but agree that he will be good! I wonder though bout the blocking although the greats always get a pass there.

Whos the numbers guy in here? Was THill rated the last QB on throws over 20 yards i wouldnt be surprised..

fin u mean like ingram, richardson, lacy? yeah those 3 are gems

Winston has talent. But he also has flaws.

Whoever saw the National Championship game and didn't see that is lying to himself.

Next year, Winston won't have K.Benjamin who has about a 12ft catch radius. He won't have 3 of his top 4 RBs. Also, more than half his linemen are turning pro.

Next Year, we will see the real Winston. This year he was great in part because he was on a great team. Next Year FSU will be great because of him.

I believe he will develop into a great pro QB. But Winston has flaws that he needs to workout before turning Pro. And the Title game exposed most of them.

Posted by: Dashi | January 22, 2014 at 04:28 PM

The FSU LB Jones is a BALLER! Agreed!

Winston will be better than Cam and RG3.

Winston is actually learning a pro system since he was a freshman. Those other 2 still haven't ran a Pro System and they already have 2 years in the NFL.

Dashi,

These 2 I think will go in the first and the DT may go top ten. he's a beast. Martin may go right at the 20 range.
Ra'Shede Hageman (DT), Minnesota
Zack Martin (OT), Notre Dame

The 2 below here could possibly go in the late first.
Gabe Jackson (G), Mississippi State
Cyril Richardson (G), Baylor

I am watching these guys in hopes 1 falls to us in either the 2nd or 3rd round.
Seantrel Henderson (OT), Miami (Fla.)
Morgan Moses (OT), Virginia
Ja'Wuan James (OT), Tennessee

But you are correct, the Jr's are dominating the first round as usual.

The only place I know that has those #s are PFF and DD is our man with those stats, I don't have them. But last DD reported on this Tannehill wasn't great but nowhere near as bad as most think. he was about middle of the pack.

winston wont be near those guys, he cant even come close to running like them and has a weaker arm than both with no pocket awareness yet

s henderson drop to us in 2nd rd??? hes gonna go 4th or 5th rd

F4L,

Agreed. That kid from Bama is going to be nasty. Yeldon who is the starter is pretty good himself. And the freshman makes him look slow and weak.

And Yeldon to me is an AP clone.

Cam has three...

Its obvious Dusty only watched Winston play in the championship game. Winston was a stud last season. His worst game was the NC and that was the best D he seen last season. And his bad game wasnt even that horrible unlike our boy THill last2 games. The guy is good. He did have a lot of talent on his team so we"ll see exactly what he is next season

Todd Gurley is the best back in college football ... easily... this guy is Hershel Walker reincarnate.

I believe he will develop into a great pro QB. But Winston has flaws that he needs to workout before turning Pro. And the Title game exposed most of them.

Posted by: Dashi | January 22, 2014 at 04:37 PM

I agree here again and in the NFL he'll have to put in the contacts!

i love gurley, he will be in draft next year. hes a fun player to watch

Sorry mate your just not right here again. You seem to let your love for Thill somewhat blind you for some unknown reason. Here are the other differences that I have noticed.

Cam had 300 more rushing yards and an extra 33 first downs on the ground and had 5 more TD's than Thill. Lets not understate the turnover difference either yet again. Cam Newton had 6 fewer turnovers, these are the differences in our overall records.

If Thill was as good as Cam Newton we would have made the playoffs, no doubt. The extra first downs and the ability to avoid the rush would have given us at least another 2-3 games. Also the turnover differential of 6 is huge, so please don't continue to paint Thill as something more than what he really is. That being the 24th ranking QB in the NFL last year.

I know you hate that ranking system, but I tend to go with it as the best way to rank QB's, as the majority of the NFL does.

saw most every game winston played, careless how good he looked vs maryland, etc not hard to see his many flaws. great college qb, nothing more

Gurly too injury prone.. TJ Yeldon looks like a beast on the next level. Drake who is 2nd string is also pretty good

Tell the truth when was the last time you projecred a college QB will be good on the next level?? And it happened

DC Dolfan and I agree that the issues regarding the Fins front office goes beyond what we are reading about this year. Just too many misses...year in and year out and this time around does not inspire any more comfidence. Actually its less. There is a good article in the Washington Post sports section today describing one of the Redskins personnel guys and why he is in Mobile along with several other key coaches. Now as this South Florida former resident who ended up living in Washington DC by way of the U.S. Navy, and freezing my ass off today, it is well worth the read. Don't assume these guys were the reason for the 3-13 Redskin season. More often then not Mike Shannhan made all roster selections-period! Again, it is a good read and explains just what team personnel guys, coaches, and scouts go looking to accomplish in Mobile.

marco newtons second year 57 pct comp 19 tds 12 ints 3869 yards 7-9 record, thills 60 pcy comp, 24 tds 17 ints 3913 yards 8-8 record cam 700 rush yards, thill 200

MIT,

I like Gurly alot!! His game thi Yr. Vs Clemson's D alone was an eye opener! Another in a solid 2015 draft group along with Yeldon who Dashi already mentioned and the U's Duke!

Dashi,

I wonder though if Yeldon won't slip some in the 2015 draft because of what you mentioned and how manycarries does that phenom RB take awy next Yr. because of the fact they'll have to rely on the run game in 2014 more with McCarron gone.

MIT,

Gurley will be great. But Yeldon is a complete RB.

You know I have been saying this since this past season. The real RBs will be coming out next year. The 4th Best RB next year will be better than the Best RB this year.

How do you convince Ross to sell the team?....$$$$$

very easily drax, quit going to games

Make sure to call the finalists first before dismissing the others...lol

F4L,

I believe the Kid will have the same effect Yeldon had on Lacy. The difference between Yeldon and Lacy is that Yeldon will test phenomenal.

This is where I believe Yeldon will separate himself from everyone. Even the guys that came before him at Alabama.

Yeldon is 6'2" 218lbs and runs a sub 4.4-40. The guy barely has an Ounce of Fat on his body. Runs violent and has exceptional Lateral Agility.

Again, TJ Yeldon is an AP clone.

Gurly too injury prone.. TJ Yeldon looks like a beast on the next level. Drake who is 2nd string is also pretty good

Posted by: Ray McDonald | January 22, 2014 at 04:48 PM

His one draw back for sure but a talent I'd take in Rd-4 if there (RB's are dropping more and more in drafts with everybody now using 2-Back systems) and feeding him the rock for 180 carries a Yr.

Oh, and Yeldon has never been seriously hurt.

As you can tell Dashi already has a Man-Crush for Yeldon.

At least were all on the same page we need a big physical back with some speed. Im sick of seeing Miller and Thomas go down on the first tackle. Especially Thomas he sucks!

Despite his K.C. Misadventures, Pioli is MUCH better than any of the named candidates. Anarchy reigns in Davie.
