Judgment day 1 over: Stephen Ross departs

Well, seven hours after he arrived at Dolphins camp in his helicopter on what was expected to be an axe-wielding mission, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross fired up his flying machine and left.

The helicopter was apparently the only thing Ross fired (up).

No one was let go -- people at Dolphins camp exhale -- as today was apparently more a fact finding day. Ross and advisor Matt Higgins are said to have met with both general manager Jeff Ireland and head coach Joe Philbin.

I am assuming each man explained to the owner why he believes the Dolphins finished the season 8-8 and out of the playoffs.

This isn't about reliving the season, folks. Ross saw the games. I assume he wanted to get the why and not so much the what out of Ireland and Philbin. And I assume he asked for their contingency plans for getting the team in the playoffs in 2014.

Both Ireland and Philbin obviously survived a potential judgment day. But this is not yet settled.

Forgot to rant on players who suck!!! Ellerbe & Wheeler are the 2 biggest busts of free agency!!! Zero instinct!!!!! Can't stop run or cover anyone!!! Are whole o line minus pouncy who is not even as good as he thinks !!! Nolan carol I try to like but he sucks too!!!! 2013 draft class better help us next year cause they did a whole lot of nothing!!!! Tannehill should file complaint against dolphins for failing to protect him against opposing defenses !!!! Off the hands of Wallace was a common phrase this year too !!! Tannehill gonna have a pimp limp one more season like this !!!! Ross man up and start firing people!!!!!!

To early to nominate longest post of the year. But I think we have an early favorite @9:04 by Steven Yaniz.

Good post. Describes what every Ireland objector says. But it also points to what Dashi always says. Who is actually better? You guys just don't want Ireland To get Credit when he actually turns the team around for good. Ireland has finally built a great foundation for what? Someone else to come but a roof on it and finish the project. This team is one Off-Season away. This off-season.

None of those Coaches you mentioned are better than Philbin. NOT One. None would've done a better job the last two years or has a brighter future planned for the Dolphins.

I get Ireland hasn't been anything spectacular and has done some good and bad, but the Bills. Really? I mean they have an average of 5.5 wins a year for the last 4 years.

Then again I can't really defend Ireland at this point. He's done some good and some bad. He seems average to me.

If we get a QUALITY replacement I won't be heartbroken.

tvegas,

Irelands 2012 draft.

1. Ryan Tannehill (4000 yards passing 24 TDs with no running game).
2. Jonathan Martin was a starter. Now that Incognito is gone we will see.
3. Olivier Vernon- 12 sacks this year and 4th in the league in sacks.
4. Egnew- Yuck but did contribute more this year. Will not amount to anything.
5. Lamar Miller- Starter 710 yards rushing this year and 4.5 yards a carry.
6. Kaddu, Cunningham, and Randall did not amount to anything. They are gone.
7. Rishard Mathews- A heck of a find in the 7th round. I think he is going to be a good player.

2 potential franchise players (Vernon and Tannehill), a couple of serviceable players and a steal in the 7th round. I would say that draft destroys the Bills 2012 garbage draft. LOL, no wonder they are 6-10 and picking 9th in the draft. Thanks for providing the 2012 draft Dashi! LOL,

Vegas,

I'm just about to post 2013. Was busy reading the long post.

The final two game meltdown caught Ross offguard.

Posted by: Zilo | January 02, 2014 at 07:14 PM

He needed two meltdowns before getting off his f@&$!(*% arse? He should have started the process after the Buffalo debacle just in case the real Dolphins had shown their true colors. No excuses for this clueless owner.

I agree with tvegas and Rick, enough!!

NO more talk on the Ireland Acorn/Nuggets please! If this team were a Movie it would be a Ruddy styled Cliche!

Movie starts with a dejected kid crying watching Mr. Irrelevant's name read at Radio City during draft. Looks at Ma, Pa and his girl with tears rolling and swears he'll make it to the NFL!

Phone rings and it's Ireland promising nothing but offering a shot! Kid arrives in Camp an after-thought while being laughed at by worthless top picks drafted by Ireland, Cogs in tow ripping everybody's ethnicity!

Kid makes team and plays Special teams with Spitler and Trusnik who become his BFF's both explaining that hard work pays off given they've both been cut multiple times but always through dedication make it back! After 3 to 4 unspectacular Yrs. he succumbs to the odds and sets off into the sunset to work Insurance with the Sparano children.

This movie by the way could start 25 players on the Miami team! Enough already with the Acorn talk please! Were not winning Titles led by a core of these types of players!

they sure do miss Bill Pollian, even though he's now senile

Well, looks like Jeffy will expand his records

1) Most draft busts ever by a GM

2) Most consecutive years for a GM without winning and without getting fired

tvegas is the smartest guy here, you idiots should listen to reason

How about giving Ryan Fitzpatrick 59 millions. Has that been mentioned among the Bills genius moves?

Oklahoma pushing Bama into a track meet game! Not what Saban wants and it could get ugly for the Tide!

Ross said there would be major changes if we didnt make the playoffs this season. He lies like a used car salesman.

I am not even discussing this year's draft. Let's talk about that next year. Most rookies don't come close to reaching their potential. I think that Jordan is going to be a big time player in the NFL, I just don't have the stats to back that up. He could not beat out the two great finds from Ireland Wake and Vernon. We will see once these guys come back next year. Simms, Taylor, Davis, and Jenkins could turn out to be good players. They have to earn their playing time.

Everyone thought Hartline, Vernon, Clay, Mathews, Odrick, Misi, Caroll, Wilson, Reshad Jones, and Clemmons were considered busts. Some have become either great or very good. The others are starters and have or will earn huge pay checks soon.

I can't comment on this year's draft. It is way too early.

Orlando. One minor point on McKinney. well, not too minor, The was begging for a job in the offseason. We thought we had the answer with Martin and said not thank you. Then when all hell broke loose we not only welcomed the old fatty partyman with open arms, we even threw in a draft pick to acquire him.

Yep, that's pure genius.

So the last 2 drafts gave us 1 servicable player (Vernon). For the rest questionmarks and busts.

If Ireland gets fired, Gaine is our next GM. Guaranteed. Ross wants to keep Philbin and that's the only way he can keep him. Another GM from the outside will want his own guy, everybody knows it.

Orlando,
You seem to be missing most of our points on the draft or draft picks. The contention is not that it takes a couple of years for some players to develop or not that it takes a couple of years to evaluate a draft.

The contention is that if you have several holes to fill on your roster, the top of the draft is one tool that teams use to fill them to get immediate or at least quick impact.

There are few teams aside from the Patriots (who had been stock piling first rd picks), that can afford the luxury of using their 1st and 2nd rd picks for projects.

Again I haven't looked but I'm willing to bet that last years SB champ Ravens, and this years probable SB contenders the Hawks and Broncos, made their 1st rd picks hoping for immediate impact. Along with a host of other well managed teams.

I hate to go against the consensus folks, but... Steve Ross is a good owner despite the won/loss record.

Stability is preferable to constant change.

That said, changes may be needed at this point, but I applaud him for his patience. He will never attract a good GM or coach with a revolving door approach.

What Cleveland did to Chudzinski is appalling. What accomplished coach in his right mind would go to Cleveland now?

OK fin4life,

Start a new topic. I guess you are also a Bills fan since you agree so much with tvegas.

You guys can have the Bills. They suck! no playoff in 14 years, 6 wins last year. A real juggernaut. I am sticking to my fins.

Let's talk about something else.

2013 Bills Draft

Round Selection Player Position
1 16[a] EJ Manuel QB
2 41 Robert Woods WR
46[a] Kiko Alonso MLB
3 78[a] Marquise Goodwin WR
4 105 Duke Williams S
5 143 Jonathan Meeks S
6 177 Dustin Hopkins K
7[b] 222[a] Chris Gragg TE

K.Alonso is the only decent player. And they drafted a MLB in 2012. 2 kickers in 2 years and A Ireland Kicker is the one starting. 3 WRs in 2 years and R.Woods is Average. And are you saying EJ Manuel had a better rookie season than T-Hill or that he has more potential. EJ Manuel showed one thing, he is as Injury Prone as he was in College.

Like I said, Name a GM in the AFC East that has done a better job drafting in the Last 5 years. The Roster was empty when Ireland got here.

But I understand most people don't want to see Ireland Finish his job because that would mean they were egregiously wrong about him. A lot of people will be changing Screen Names.

2014 will be more of the same. no emotion joe and no clue ireland will be back at the helm and will continue to run this once proud franchise into the ground
the ireland draft plan in 2014 lives

round 1. We trade up with jacksonville only surrending our 1st in 2014 and 2015 and draft the best hot dog vender out of college ranks and he goes on to lead the league in concession sales.

round 2. We forfeit this pick as we cant decide between the grounds keeper from USC or The valet parker from Michigan. lose the second rd pick

round 3. Not top worry guys. The grounds keeper slides out of round two and into our laps in round 3. Ireland is quoted as saying ive had my eye on him since he did the scotts turf building commercial last year. We go onto lead the league in grass growing.

round 4. We finally use a pick on a player. MVP of the pop warner league in california. Ireland tells us he will be probowl ready in 2025

We trade the rest of our draft for new equipment

Posted by: dolfan29 | January 02, 2014 at 09:23 PM

The draft in 2014 as i see it playing out. many acorns to be had

What you ultra illiterate idiots fail to recognize because your reading and comprehension skills are no better than a cockroache's...

McKinney and Albert both wanted LUCRATIVE long term deals.

They both have little time left. Only an IDIOT such has you fans would have given them $$$$$ long term deals.

Has it occured to any of you brain dead jackoffs that NO OTHER TEAM offered them that as well? Nope. PLENTY of teams need help at oline but they are not STUPID like most of you.

Posted by: Orlando Dolphan | January 02, 2014 at 09:36 PM

No offence but Vernon wasn't a find1 He would have gone in Rd-1 if not for the Nevin Shapiro scandal at UM which cost him most of the 2011 Season suspended! It had been time after passing on need players out of the U that Ireland finally payed attention! Calais Campbell an need we passed on for Merling! Passing on T.E. (UBBER NEED!) Jimmy Graham taking Sparano Sr. Bowl Fav. J.Jerry! We also passed on RT Orlando Franklin!

1-15 when he got here, to be exact. With Camarillo and only Greg Camarillo!

I posted value players that the Bills have acquired over two seasons through the draft or FA, and the Ireland defenders come in drones to remind me how bad the Bills have been. Should have known better. Anything to make your point. We better not compare Ireland's acorns and draft stars with the rest of the league because I am sure they are all far inferior to ours.

Btw, for all the losing the Bills have been doing, how many times have the Fins made the playoffs the past ten years? Who beat us twice this year? You guys stopped paying attention again

C

DonC, agreed. And if Ross decides to get rid of Sherman, or if he suddenly retires or whatever, I would be VERY interested in Chudzinski...

Most of you are extremely dumb and naive but too dumb and naive to see it.

But I do.

Prediction

Ross/Ireland will NEVER have a winning season.

OK fin4life,

Start a new topic. I guess you are also a Bills fan since you agree so much with tvegas.

The fact I keep a level head when it comes to Ireland's achievements makes me a Bills lover? Common Orlando! I think and posted your way earlier that the fact he has found some nice players to fill out the roster only makes some of his higher pick moves all the more frustrating!

By the way the Sugar Bowl is so far looking like an eye opener! Upset in the making with Bama D sleep-walking!

Matt Elam was not special for the Ravens. Again that does not mean that he is not going to be a good player. He is a rookie.

Sylvester Williams (Broncos) I like him but he is no pro bowler yet.

In fact you look at the majority of the first round and most of those players either struggled or were average in their first year. Jordan could not get on the field much because of Vernon and Wake. You can never have enough pass rushers. Jordan will get better. I like the approach of going up and getting what you think is the best player available. We will see. I am sure that you guys are not going to come back in a year or 2 to post wow I was wrong Jordan is a stud. That is just how fans are.

Wat is your argument Tvegas cheap players dat Ireland got that contributed which is wat I gave you you can argue the fact bess is gone if you want to get technicle but you cant argue Wake or Hartline they were cheap aquisitions dat earned there contracts Nollan Carrol was trash I agree but this year he improved 3ints 10 pass def come on Vegas im not saying he is Revis but he improved lots I deff missed him when he got hurt and brady was harrasing Will Davis

-------------------------------------------------------

Call me crazy but that's the move I would make. That and can Turner and Coyle.

Tvegas

When comparing the bills draft to ours this year it isnt even close. Our draft yielded no impact players. The bills had one in alonso. Woods and Goodwin had solid rookie years and manuel looked ok when in there.

We had a pt DE/LB who still doesnt have a defining position. Both corners were hurt and lost when on the field. Sims was ok. Sturgis looked good early but struggled mid season. The rest either didnt dress on sundays or were 3rd string at best

Any casual fan could rate the bills draft as better than ours. The fact that they swepted us with help from that draft class speaks volumes. great post

F4L,

UM RT- S.Henderson in the 2nd or 3rd. RESIGN McKinnie for 1 Season to mentor him into the league. S.Henderson is a lot of things. But the main thing he is a Mountain of a Man 6'8" 350+LBs those guys don't grow on trees, they are the tree.

Posted by: Orlando Dolphan | January 02, 2014 at 09:36 PM

Wake was a Parcells find monkey fart

We trade the rest of our draft for new equipment

The draft in 2014 as i see it playing out. many acorns to be had

Posted by: dolfan29 | January 02, 2014 at 09:42 PM

What type of grass can your 3rd Rd'er grow?

Orlando.

Just to mention. I hate the bills more than any team in sports. But i will give credit when its due

Dashi. Cmon Mr, Stubborn. We all gave Tanny a pass his rookie year AND his second year,

But Manuel is automatically garbage? Woods is a solid receiver and will continue to get better. Nobody would argue that knows better. Alonso is better than almost every player on our roster and reminds me of Zach Thomas flying all over the field. Goodwin is a burner that made some nice catches down the field and might end up being better than Wallace at 10% of the price.

You made me do it. Can you please tell me who contributed anything on this list for the Dolphins? Jordan better be one hell of a player!

Picks: DE Dion Jordan, CB Jamar Taylor, OT Dallas Thomas, CB Will Davis, OLB Jelani Jenkins, TE Dion Sims, RB Mike Gillislee, K Caleb Sturgis, SS Don Jones.

Jordan is a stud. Problem is our idiot DC doesn't know how to use him. A lot of people are cursing at Sherman, but Coyle should be the first one to get fired. Plenty of talent on paper, but most of the players underachieved. Why?? Totally unacceptable. Bye!! See ya...

Dashi, when you are 40 only then will you realize what a naive immature child you are now. But we see.

OK fair enough fin4life. We all love our fins even though they break our hearts every year. I don't know where all this Bills talk came from. That is the last team I want to be like.

A good game. I can't stand bama. Probably because they are so good.

BTW- I don't know how many of you are canes fans but talk is that Golden is a front runner to go to Penn State. I have mixed feelings about him but recognize that he has not had a level playing field with the dark ncaa cloud. If he leaves, I like Scianno for that UM job. He is a former canes coach and I think he is a good college coach. The canes defense will definitely improve under schiano.

Was busy watching the Heat game but the Sugar Bowl does look like a better game. Plus heat game is done.

Wow! Nice play!

Fin4life

the grass will be a hybrid of kentucky blue and california bent. great to play on

Cid- Try to post legible sentences that one can read if you are going to debate. And all of the players you mentioned were on the team before Ireland took over unless you count Carrol, who is a bum

Wake was all Parcells you peanut brains

watching OU v Bama…..how does OU's Trevor Knight throw a better deep ball than Tannehill?

So my new girlfriend I thought was so innocent. We finally did the deed. You know...while going down on me she put her finger up my butthole. Turned me on. But now I am concerned about her past...

But I'm diggin it for now :)

Outside of you I wasn't sure anybody would know who I was talking about! Your right the thing is you'll need a Coach that can motivate him when he plays he's a mauler but motivation with him damning!

Dashi, I heard Denzel Perrymen is coming out as well don't know who advised him cause he could have used the extra Yr. but definite value in Rd-4! Put in the paper work with Chickillo. Your thoughts?

Btw, for all the losing the Bills have been doing, how many times have the Fins made the playoffs the past ten years?

Just once and were close this year. How many playoffs have the Bills been to in the last 14 years, 0.

Wow how low have we fallen, we have Bills fans mocking us. I don't care Bills' fans need to put bags over their heads. They have sucked for years.

A hybrid of OG and Maui wowie would be a much better grass to play on. Ask Ricky!

Matt Elam was not special for the Ravens. Again that does not mean that he is not going to be a good player. He is a rookie.
Sylvester Williams (Broncos) I like him but he is no pro bowler yet.

-------------------------------------------------------

The fact is Elam started 14 games for the Ravens this year and had a breakout performance against the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football, recording 10 tackles and his first career interception.

What if DJ Fluker, or Jonathan Cooper, or Keenan Allen started 14 games for us this year and had a breakout game against Jets at home in the season finale to help propel us into the playoffs???

The reason Philbin has no emotion?

He is a pencil dick. He never really turned women on. Without that kind of energy and feedback, you revert to being cold and cerebral.

orlando

all the more reason ireland and philbin should go as if we cant beat the lowly bills with everything on the line then what does that say about our roster and the overpaid clowns on it

Not a Bills Fan Orlando, just an objective poster. Perhaps you need to feel better about the Fins by picking on the Bills. They're the ones laughing after they took the first punch at knocking us out of the playoffs. But take the time to really analyze what Ireland has done for the Fins in 4 years. Most GM's with his track record would be long gone by now.

Sleep on that. Goodnight

Did I say Garbage? I said Injury Prone. And I said compare him to T-Hill. Did he have a better rookie season than T-Hill? Will his 2nd year show as much growth?

We have more depth than the Bills of course most of our players this season didn't play.

But like I said. S.Gilmore a First round pick will be our #5 CB. He won't beat out Grimes, DP, Carroll or J.Wilson for playing time. Heck, Miami Vice would beat him out for a roster spot.

3 WRs in 2 Years. R.Woods is OK but he won't be better than #5 on this roster. Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, and R.Matthews are all better WRs.

None among us have a clue as to what will be done inside the Dolphin regime. Not Mando, Not Omar, and
not even The Mighty Dashi. We will sit and whine, and
pnder, and pontificate, and take what we can get when we can get it. I am a pre-Griese fan who couldn't by tickets if they were half-price. And they may well be in 2014
if someone doesn't figure out the Dolphin Debacle. I honestly don't remember a collapse like this year. At least sign Grimes to a 3 yr. contact and get a power-
back that can gain a yard when needed. Go Dolphins !!

"You guys just don't want Ireland To get Credit when he actually turns the team around for good. Ireland has finally built a great foundation for what? Someone else to come but a roof on it and finish the project. This team is one Off-Season away. This off-season." - Dashi

There's a reason why this comes off as an overly optimistic apologist, and that's because this statement was infinitely more valid a year ago.

A year ago this team was coming off a 7-9 season and in my estimation was it was the most important off-season in a decade. Ireland had 5 picks in the first 3 rounds and what amounts to blank check in Free Agency (due to the cap situation) and they wound up with one more win, and arguably more holes than a year ago.

The fact you can make that same claim yet again proves how invalid a concept it's become. It's really more like 5 years that a mediocre team has been "a year away" and failed to find the cohesion and impact players necessary to get over the proverbial hump.

But I mean this time will be different right?
