Judgment day 1 over: Stephen Ross departs

Well, seven hours after he arrived at Dolphins camp in his helicopter on what was expected to be an axe-wielding mission, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross fired up his flying machine and left.

The helicopter was apparently the only thing Ross fired (up).

No one was let go -- people at Dolphins camp exhale -- as today was apparently more a fact finding day. Ross and advisor Matt Higgins are said to have met with both general manager Jeff Ireland and head coach Joe Philbin.

I am assuming each man explained to the owner why he believes the Dolphins finished the season 8-8 and out of the playoffs.

This isn't about reliving the season, folks. Ross saw the games. I assume he wanted to get the why and not so much the what out of Ireland and Philbin. And I assume he asked for their contingency plans for getting the team in the playoffs in 2014.

Both Ireland and Philbin obviously survived a potential judgment day. But this is not yet settled.

I really don't think Ross is cleaning house, I really don't. Some coaches will get the axe, most likely Sherman, but I don't see much else. Still not convinced Ireland gets canned. Turner is in all likelihood gone...Coyle? He should...But doubtful. Maybe I'm wrong but that's the feeling I get.

When ever I feel stupid I put on a Jeff Ireland mask and I feel better

Post of the year. Pretty much says it all. But you won't win against the homers that know better

"Btw, for all the losing the Bills have been doing, how many times have the Fins made the playoffs the past ten years?" OrlandoDolphin

I saw a chart today that had win totals for the past decade.
The only teams with less wins than the Dolphins are...

Raiders
Bills
Browns
Rams
Lions

So yeah, that's the group this franchise has been closest to. It's sad....and it's beyond frustrating to care so much and be so helpless. When it's run so poorly it makes you not want to care anymore (or at least wish you could not care).

Saban Sinking

Matt Higgins is the old PR guy to 9-11 new york mayor Giuliani.

so he has some experience bailing out his boss after a complete disaster.

Ross has taken off in the escape pod. Maybe he is going to , 'Nuke the site from Orbit', its the only way to be sure, right ?

Dolfan Rick,

Didn't cooper go out for the year. Again I like Elam but he is going to be much better. 1 game come on.

Allen looked good and Flucker was descent. You sited 3 and all they did was flash. You can add Sheldon Richardson to that list too for the Jets, he is a beast. There are 32 players taken in the draft. Most struggled or just flashed.

Ireland went for what he thinks was the best defensive player in the draft. With Wake and Vernon in there, it was tough to get him in there. He was not going to start over those guys. He was also hurt at the beginning of the season and needs to play the run better. Wake is 32 years old and will start declining soon, Vernon will be molded to replace him. I still think that Jordan is a freak and before it is all said and done he will be one of the best defensive players taken in this draft. I will remind you next year.
Let's see what we have next year.

And the Bills don't have a better defensive line, lead the league in defensive turnovers and have a better rushing attack than ours either.

I never said they were Super Bowl caliber Dashi. But analyze it position by postion and you can't make an arguement that our future is brighter.

Forget the arguement that our team was deep and the rookies couldn't play. Think we could have used Dallas Thomas's help or some help in the secondary with the injuries mounting? Fact is, they either couldn't play the game or weren't coached well enough to play the game. But depth? No sir, our depth is nothing special

I've sat here for the past 30 minutes and read every post (at least the ones worth reading)... and while I understand some of the sentiment and responses... I didn't read a single post that gave a legitimate plan should Ross do what so many of you are asking.

Let's say those of you calling for a "house cleaning" got your way. Let's just pretend that when you wake up or come home from work (those of you who do such a thing) and read the Dolphin news of the day... You find out Ross has fired the entire staff. Ireland, gone. Philbin, gone. All the coordinators and they're assistants. Even Dawn Aponte.... EVERYONE.... Gone.

Now... I read so often from so many here about how this franchise is the laughing stock of the sports world (it's not) and how we're cured (we're not)... and how people should not buy tickets and so on and so forth... What I don't understand is why people with such sentiment would be on this blog posting for hours each day while feeling that way... Gotta tell ya... When I reach that point with anything I split and don't look back.... So... Someone is lying, trolling or just plain full of shizynit...

But....LETS PRETEND you not for just a moment... Steve Ross just called and said... "I've read your posts and hacked your phone numbers... You've told me I should fire everyone... I DID.... Now, smart guys.... Tell me what I should do now since you seem to know..."

I'll check back in a few hours or tomorrow... Lets just see how many "Rock Throwers" have legitimate idea's beyond "Fire Everyone".... Go ahead... Put um out there... I REALLY DO wish to hear what others believe this team should do... BE SPECIFIC... NAMES, RECORDS REASONS WHY AND WHY NOT.... Don't generalize...

Here is your chance to show the entire blog you can do more then criticize and whine...

Can you do it..? Or will you just shoot me down and keep right on whining..?

We'll see I suppose....

F4L,

Agreed on Henderson being Lazy. But you can't deny that ability and size.

D.Perryman is good value in the mid rounds(Depends how he runs he could be a 3 rd rounder). He could replace Wheeler as a Rookie. Probably battle J.Jenkins for a Starting spot. I believe what is happening with him is what happens with certain players at The U when they have talent at one position or give a sale pitch to a star recruit. He is being phased out. I believe that is what happened with OV and L.Miller. They told them it was better for them to go early, knowing that they promised recruits playing time right away(D.Johnson and Chickillo)

Chickillo should stay one more season. Even though this is a weak DE draft he could be a Mid first rd pick. He would be the 2nd or 3rd best DE in this Draft.

I remember watching the HS All-star game that had Chickillo and Clowney on the same team. Talk about a Scary sight even for HS Kids.

Post of the year number 2 already. Stick around buddy, I like your style. Remember, it's a forum of Dolphins fans. The blinders on some will get to you from time to time

Woa Tvegas Cam wake was signed by Ireland Hartline was drafted by Ireland one round after Pat Turner im sure you remember him since you love bringing up Irelands bust Bess signed by Ireland so what the hell are talking about you might as well be a bills fan if your just now learning this Vega...as for my sentences dis is a blog you right how you this is not English class sir

orlando

That is just the point. Regardless of what Dion Jordan will become there were more pressing needs on this team.

Im not a dion jordan hater but the price to get him cost us the playoffs. We sacrificed the oline in taking him.

you said next season or there after for Jordan. I want my team to win now. Not draft every year with the intent my guy will blossom in 2-4 years. This isnt baseball or hockey where we have a farm team for a player to learn. Guys arnt knocking dion jordan, they are knocking the pick because of the position he happens to play

Dolfan29,

The fins failed to beat the Bills but not because of the roster. That roster also beat the Steelers and Colts on the road, and the Bengals, Pats, and Chargers. Ireland does not make adjustments, call plays, motivate players, or produces game plans. That is all on the coaches.

Orlando

yes your right which is why the coaches need to go as well. However the players on this roster wernt talented enough to beat the talent on their roster. On paper yes. Too bad we cant play them on paper

random scrapnel, liked your post!

Here's your 3rd down back -

http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/77355/instant-analysis-lsu-21-iowa-14

Stiff arm at 44 sec is awesome

He is projected as a 2nd to 3rd rounder

Wake or Hartline was not on the 2008 playoff team so how the hell your going to say they were on the team before Ireland your talking to a real Dolfan Tvegas

Dashi do you floss?

I love the canes but I don't know if I would take anyone from that lousy defense. Maybe Perryman. No one on that defense is special.

Posted by: Orlando Dolphan | January 02, 2014 at 10:10 PM

Jordan was the third overall pick in the draft. He should be the best defensive player from that draft. The point was oline was a bigger need. get it?? wade was a parcells find. Please open your eyes

Wrong Cid. Parcells was the Czar at the time every one of those players became a Dolphin. Parcells is not known as a "take charge" guy so I am sure Ireland had a lot more to do with it! But don't fret, Parcells had his share of failures too. Except for the ones like Vonte Davis, Shaun Smith, and Kendell Langford that went on to become better players after we ditched them. Keep digging yourself a hole though.

Orlando is wrong.
The Bills are a match up nightmare for the Phins.
It's been proven over and over.
Hence the 200 yards rushing.

Stay the course ROSS!!!

Ireland with will lead us to the Promiseland!!!

Philbin will not Fail us!!!

Sherman's O will may the rest of the league Cry!!!

Coyle's Defensive scheme will my our opponents Scream!!!

Rizzi's Special Teams will leave'm all in a Tizzi!

Turner's OLine is truly Sublime!

Aponte is a lil naugh-tay!

BTW- I don't know how many of you are canes fans but talk is that Golden is a front runner to go to Penn State. I have mixed feelings about him but recognize that he has not had a level playing field with the dark ncaa cloud. If he leaves, I like Scianno for that UM job. He is a former canes coach and I think he is a good college coach. The canes defense will definitely improve under schiano.

You know right when the NCAA decision came down and we bolted to the #-7 ranking you felt the floor was going to cave. If your a fan you knew we weren't there yet! Our D just doesn't have the horses yet and that 2 gap scheme D'Antoni wants to run isn't working and the reason they were run on the way they were. Seems he only knows 2 formations? He either plays 2-Gap D or floods the secondary with 6 to 7 DB's, occasionally BLITZING.

It was working until the 3rd at FSU when the Noles abandoned the home run threat and banged it between the Tackles throwing under-neath the coverages. Then we backed off the 7 DB set and went 2-Gapping again when Winston ripped us to pieces and W.Va, Duke saw and exploited. D'Antoni's inability to add any wrinkles hurt them badly Vs. Bridgewater who saw exactly what the D gave and took it with knife like precision, as a local kid his gesture at our bench was pretty claseless.

The point is Local sports talk had anointed Golden the 2nd coming and I was apprehensive! I think the O under his hand picked OC Coyle went backwards as well. You can recruit the best but need better scheme and Coaching. I feel Golden has taken them as far as he can at this point and doesn't have it to threaten the SEC, PAC Conf. or some ACC opponents in order to take the next step.

Cid,

tvegas knows so much about the Bills that he has to be a Bills fan. Who else would keep up with that crappy team.

He wants to match him to the dolphins position by position, yet they are picking 9th in the draft, 10 spots after the fins. Yea, they are great.

Kudos cid for being a real dolphins fan. That is what we need positive fans that support the team. Go fins!

if I was a bills fan I would definitely be feeling more confident going into next year than being a miami fan, their D is better and they have 2 better QB's than we do

Orlando,

Dude I guess we'll just agree to disagree. What Ireland did with Jordan imo is do what he always does and draft a guy based on measurables and potential.

This time like with Daniel Thomas he gave up what could have been other starters in extra draft picks.

With Ireland we'll never get a guy like Zach Thomas who was a tad slow and undersized but played like a man possessed.

Do you think Ireland would have drafted Brent Grimes??

I STILL CANT BELIEVE THIS IDIOT VEGAS THINKS CAM WAKE AND HARTLINE WAS ON THE TEAM BEFORE IRELAND WAS GM WERES THIS GUY FROM PLUTO

Posted by: dolfan29 | January 02, 2014 at 10:18 PM

We finally found common ground. They were better than both those teams on paper. The Dolphins coaches had to put those players in the right position to win those games or motivate them. They had everything to play for. Ireland can not do anything about that from his office. That has to be taken care of in the class room and in the practice field by the coaches.

Posted by: Put Up... Or Shut Up.. | January 02, 2014 at 10:14 PM

Shut up!!!!

Dolfan Rick

When did Zack ever stop a team in the 4th quarter? Never. Time and time again teams came back on us and stuffed it down our throats.

All this talk of Zack and JT makes me puke. They never played big when it counted most, and the record says so.

You said Impact Players. Like it was a group of players with Star Potential.

Is R.Woods the next L.Evans? Doubt it. He isn't even Peerless Price.

The reason K.Alonso is even on the Bills is because they let P.Posluszny walk.

Plus, K.Alonso Stats are padded like a Mofo. He had 72 Assists leading the League, talk about being generous. So if he was the third guy there they still gave him a Tackle.

I hope Okla keeps up the momentum. Don't wanna hear Bama fans whine when Auburn or FSU for that matter wins the title.

Cid, I am not replying to you anymore. Remember when Parcells was hired by the Dolphins to "shop for the groceries?" Or were you brain dead then? Or just now?

I'm having too much fun watching Saban get his arse kicked. I have no more time for guys like you. Find a board with no intelligence

This team will be fine. I will continue to buy up unused tickets for you losers in Miami to watch on TV while my stadium sits empty!

The sandwich I have assembled of Jeffy Dawn Joe will lead my team to the SuperBowl!!!

I have faith in every Jets reject to solve our problems!!!

This off-season I will make sure we building a winning team by signing Wheeler and Ellerbe and Carrol and Wilson and Trusnik and Jerry to contract extensions!!! I will spare no cost to keep this 8-8 team intact! Mediocrity is or goal!

Dashi wtf do you know? Dansby had a great season, so did Burnett, yet Ellerbe and Wheeler were frauds.

I know you haven't reached the level of maturity to admit when you are wrong yet, but...you should at least realize your opinions here are farts in the wind.

Dolphin Rick and Dolphin29. Only so many times we can argue our point. Time for me to rest my weary head. Hopefully we will wake to a new GM but I'm not hopeful

It does not matter who the head coach or gm is next year with the schedule we have in 2014. Denver,Baltimore, Green Bay, Chicago, KC not to mention the usual games against Buf, NE and NYJ. It's going to be ugly for T-hill and crew if the o line is not rebuilt and we don't have a running back who can gain more than 2 yards every time he touches the ball.

nyfinfan is hiding all the good drugs.
Sigh!

orlando

When the talent on paper translated over to the field it wasnt even close. We got wiped out by the bills.

Who do you blame the shambles of the offensive line on?. Ireland drafted one offensive lineman and that guy didnt sniff the field over practice squad sam brenner.

This alone should cost ireland his job. Hes had 6 years and endless money to get it right. How long does it take?. Another 10?

Man that Bama Kicker Foster forever infamous for the misses that cost the Tide in the Iron Bowl with the Nat'l Championship on the line misses another Kick before the half. Nick wont put the game in his hands late .

Dude I guess we'll just agree to disagree. What Ireland did with Jordan imo is do what he always does and draft a guy based on measurables and potential.

Posted by: Dolfan Rick | January 02, 2014 at 10:24 PM

That is what he did with Vernon. He only had 3 sacks his first year. He developed and this year had 12 sacks, 4th in the NFL.

Rick- You cannot call Jordan a bust or even average yet. The guy was very good in coverage, won the game against the Falcons, and is a freakish athlete. This guy has the type of freakish athleticism to be a dominator in this league. He has to get a little bigger and play the run better. The fins will work with him in the offseason like they did with Vernon. I think that he will be a great pick when it is all said and done.

-------------------------------------------------------

Jason Taylor was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2006 and I would have put my money on Zach stopping Geno Smith somewhere between those seven yards and the endzone last Sunday.

ross left and nothing happened. pathetic. he's a conservative and they don't like change. so this is what we have and we are keeping it. so we will continue to suck.

I am not arguing with you over Kiko Alonso Dashi. Only to say if he were a Dolphin you would be singing his praises. Unless you were never a Zach Thomas fan.

Why just not admit that the guy played his arse off and would be a welcome addition to our team? To make a point against him just seems foolish. Try agrguing your point to a bunch of paid NFL analysts. You would look silly.

Goodnight

I cannot criticize the boycotting since i gave up 1975 acquired season tix toward end of Wanny Error. But realize it plays into L. A. scenario. Ross tells Goodell "I tried;bought up blackout, spent big on FAs, locals refuse to build super bowl worthy Stadium, won't buy tix" Goodell :L. A. will build you stadium;bye bye Miami.

So your basically telling me while Parcelles was czar Ireland was just collecting free paychecks did Parcelles not state that Ireland convinced him Henne was as good as Matt Ryan and Flacco and we drafted him so obviously Ireland had some say so you technicle clown get a clue the only picc Parcelles admited he made on his on was that fragile QB from West Verginia I already forgot the bumbs name u stupid Bills fan go to a Bills blog your dismissed sir

Ross you blowhard.. save the Dolphins SELL THE TEAM!

Ireland's MO = trade up to draft a project player
Jordan = project
D. Thomas = project
Even Tannehill's a project

It's True, LOL!

Don't need drugs, I'm a Fins fan. That alone will make you speaking in tongues!

Dolphins assistant GM could be the new GM.

Popularity contests are for gossip queens. Only one stat matters. Period.

Zack and JT's defense failed us time after time. The two most overrated fins in team history.

I want rings, not hollow media adulation.

Stadium, won't buy tix" Goodell :L. A. will build you stadium;bye bye Miami.

That would be great. Move the stinkin team far away

A good game. I can't stand bama. Probably because they are so good.

Posted by: Orlando Dolphan | January 02, 2014 at 09:53 PM

Ummm. How about because they are led by Satan?

I really don't think Ross is cleaning house, I really don't. Some coaches will get the axe, most likely Sherman, but I don't see much else. Still not convinced Ireland gets canned. Turner is in all likelihood gone...Coyle? He should...But doubtful. Maybe I'm wrong but that's the feeling I get.

Here we agree but for me you don't make him one-dimensional with his hand in the dirt. This is a futuristic look at bigger OLB's who can actually cover. We have a mold breaking prototype like the 6'3"'245 Pd LT was for Parcells running his 4.44/40 back in 81! I think this kid could have been gang busters down the stretch. Put that on the shoulders of his DC and H.C. who didn't push the Coordinator to get him on the field either!

Good luck getting a dime from me Ross!

dolfan29,

You have a good point on the Offensive Line. They have not done a good job of brining talent on the offensive line. Some of that is on Ireland and some of that is on Philbin. Philbin runs a finesse zone blocking offense. Ireland had to change his power Offensive line to fit Philbin's scheme. Long had multiple pro bowl appearance but he did not fit Philbin's philosophy and had a strong personality. Incognito was a good find, he made the pro bowl last year. Pouncey is a pro-bowler. Jerry again does not fit Ireland's zone blocking scheme, he is a mauler. Martin was a Philbin favorite and is the kind of OL Philbin likes, athletic type.

All that being said, I cannot disagree that Ireland should have had a better play for the offensive line. We will see what he can do next year. I think he will focus all of his attention to the Offensive line next year. He will sign a couple of top FAs and draft 1 OL in the first or second round. He better because if this Offensive Line plays like it did this year, I will be asking for Ireland to be fired.

Yeah I remember Higgins he was the butler on Magnum P.I.
Where were the dogs dude?

Anyting thar gets Ross out of Florida I'm all for.
