Philbin (safe according to source) fires Mike Sherman

The Dolphins have announced offensive coordinator Mike Sherman has been fired. I am also reporting that coach Joe Philbin is "definitely safe," according to a club source and will return for his third season with the Dolphins.

“I would like to thank Mike for his contributions to the Miami Dolphins,” Philbin said in a statement released by the club. “Mike has been a mentor to me throughout my coaching career, dating back to 1979. He is a man of great integrity, dedicated to his family, his team, his players and his profession. On behalf of the entire Miami Dolphins organization I want to wish Mike and his family the very best in the future.”

Interesingly, Philbin did not wish to fire his "mentor." The coach had previously defended Sherman as an "excellent" football coach. But owner Stephen Ross wanted Sherman out after the Dolphins scored only one touchdown in the season's final two games when the playoffs were on the line.

Ross, however, could not actually fire Sherman as he had signed over hiring and firing power to Philbin in his contract. But obviously, rather than defy his boss, Philbin did as the owner wished.

In fulfilling his owner's desire to "relieve Sherman" of his duties, Philbin accomplished something very important: He solidified his own job status.

Ross had no desire to get rid of Philbin but might have been forced to do just that if the coach had refused to comply with his wishes. In complying, however, Philbin remains safe.

It is unclear if this is the one and only change to the Dolphins this offseason. There is still a chance the team may add a football czar. General Manager Jeff Ireland's status also has yet to be cemented by the team.

I reported in early December that Ross had assured Ireland of returning next season. Obviously, the collapse at the end of the season with the playoffs beckoning made that very less certain.

Indeed
Def will be better than Tannefail and all his dismal NFL records despite passing on almost every playthis season with the fired college and NFL OC Mike Sherman

or jax

how can the extreme lack of talent on the offensive line be Irelands fault. He's only been in charge of talent for 6 years. He is right on the cusp of brilliance. plus he has offensive pictures of Ross in a blackmail situation

Mark eats crow on his negative comments about Cam Newton

Home wanted Cam Newton for the fish back when he was projected @ #10 in the NFL Draft

Next draft Home wanted LB Luke Kuechly

and the fish reached for the WR/QB Tannefail instead and failed with him and the two new LBs that Ireland signed for a Gizzillion dollars

Home 4 GM!

Cam Newton - Pro Bowl, .... again

Ryan Timothy Tannefail - Toilet Bowl, .... again

OK enough about cam newton who cares phins don't have him and oh by the way till this season many people questioned whether he could even take the next step and for all the tannehil haters everybody needs to slow down abit I mean ask yourself did u c improvement? I did yes the deep ball needs to improve for him to be a big time qb but my god he was sacked 58 times no run game that last bill game was by far worst o-lone performance I've ever seen and I've watched alot of phins games in my life our biggest concern is the ineptitude of owner to gm and coaching that don't have a clue how to utilize players like Wallace and vush

The list of candidates ESPN is suggesting are probably just guesses. I'm guessing know one has actually talked to anyone yet.

Hue Jackson could be interesting though.

Well there's something to look forward to in 2014, 2 watt and Home won't be here anymore.

And Cam Newton is nowhere near elite ... yet.

Soooooo many excuses for Tannefail

and the poor drafting by Ireland

2012 NFL Draft - Dolphoons

1) Tannefail = disaster cannot throw the football anywhere near accurate over 20 YDs, no pocket presence, leads the team to failure esp in December scoring ZERO points two yrs in a row - BUST
2) Martin = liability, way too weak for an NFL lineman
Bust
3)Egnew = Bust

Go Fish!

Bellichek said he would come to Miami in the right situation. I think he would be Brady with him because he's in the last year of his contract. That would be awesome, professions coming to Miami, it'd be the first time in a quite a while

he would bring Brady with him*

Office Boy Mark once again, proves he knows nothing about American football

6.6 260 LB QB Cam Newton is Elite

always has been
always will be

Mark,
I like 2 watts better than you

Jury is obviously still out on Tanny for sure. One thing s certain to me though. If we had drafted Andrew Luck there would be people posting complaining about his interceptions or reads or something.

There isn't any doubt (at least in my mind)that Ireland has missed on many players but we can't have them all.

Just like next year. There are some great looking prospects out there. Bridgewater, Manziel, Watkins, Benjamin, Hyde, Mosley, etc. etc. We can't have them all.

Albeit it would be nice to get a couple of them for a change.

what I like most about 2 watts is that he's not a long winded blow hard

And while I'm at it, Americans usually blame the Canadians for cold winter weather but what is this cold vortex circling above your country that's making it feel like -40 degree centigrade here today?

Fire Coyle. Finally I've heard his name mentioned!!

2 watts a cool blogger and entitled to his opinion

Why does the pukey office boy from Toronto -little Mark attack bloggers for posting their opinions

esp when they are 100% correct, sir

Go Cam! Go Luke! Go Star!

Go Panthers!

Haha, I love all my fans ...

Where did you hear that Brad?

Home, why did Mando ban you again? Too bad he has a minimum wage earning IT department so he could keep the ban permanent.

Ireland just signed 8 players from the day laborer site

Home, if you did want to talk serious for a second, personally I would've drafted Star or Sheldon Richardson before Jordan alhtough I still liked the Jordan pick and understand why it was made. Carolina got a great value in Star.

Hi Home!

you don't move up in the first round giving up a 2nd to pick a defensive project when you have the worst oline in the NFL. That maneuver should only be enjoyed as a luxury to good teams.(GM's that know how to draft)

That will be my superbowl

Shirley Mark
Home is always serious

Tannefail not being able to hit the deep ball
cost the Dolphins the Play Offs

one man failed miserably on wide open TDs for
32 games and counting

Unless the Dolphins receivers came back to catch the inaccurate fledgling wounded duck pass and the db had his back turned, then Tannefail would have completed NOTHIN deep

The Tannefail experiment @ QB should be OVAH!

Thill disappeared in the 4th Q, 8 games in a row without a 4th quarter TD, that's pathetic. I think it was 12 games in all without a 4th quarter TD

....Home. What are the original mobster of? Do you ride in a bike gang with the local kids..Put Baseball cards in your spokes to make them sound like motorcycles? Does you gang make little bombs out of lighters? Do you steel candy from the local store counter? What exactly do you mob?

..What a brave move yesterday. Firing Mike Sherman. Now all the problems of this team will surely be solved. Well done Dolphins. You got it right once again!

Beat it, take your alter egos away with you.

remember how well it worked when they fired Sporano? The extreme lack of talent can't be Jeff Ireland's fault, even though he's the constant median

the homers have been wrong for 5 str8 seasons,
why would this ever change?

Mark,

So I saw your boy Benjamin win the game last night, and I dont know man. He seems kinda slow and he didnt terribly impress me. I just dont see that B.Marshall, Alshon Jeffrey kind of receiver, due to his size. Did he play like you thought he would and did he impress you?

But my boy Tra Mason!!! He was awesome, die you see how he fights for extra yards, waits for holes to develop and hits em fast. That 3 and 1 early in the game, did you see him contort his body to get just enough for that first down!

This kid is special!!!! Not trying to bust on your boy. But come on Tra is the shiz!!

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED!!

Hey rdubs,

I do like Tre Mason, but I think at his size, he may be more Lamar Miller when i want some ben Tate. I do dig that his dad was a member of De La Soul (who I'm old enough to remember) and he is a nice little back - just not sure he brings enough of what we are missing though granted he certainly looks stronger than Miller who the next time he breaks a tackle, will eb the first time.

personally I am gald benjamin didn't have a great game. The knock on him is he just might lack the explosion needed to be a surefire first round pick. I am waiting until the combine/pro days to see what his vertical/broad scores are. His speed is fine at 4.5. We did however see what impresses me most and that's his ability to catch poorly thrown or 50/50 passes. he is the ingredient we lack in our pass game. If benjamin does flunk out his atheltic scores, there are a host of other big receivers coming out this draft. You check out cbs' list of top 20 wrs available this year, there is maybe one or two guys that are sub 6'2 205lbs. It's a big WR class... anxiously awaiting the combine like the numbers nerd I am...

..Rdubs..Mark in Toronto...

Benjamin is the exact sort of receiver we need. Forget the speed. We need a big bodied guy that can go up and fight for the ball. I don't know if he is that guy. But this offense needs a guy who can body people.

As far as Tre' Mason. I am sold. I don't think he will be a first round guy. IMO there isn't a reason to pick a running back in the first round this year. But he is a freekin stud. I totally disagree that he is anything like Lamar Miller. One guy(Mason) runs like a demon. The other(Miller) runs like the Elton John song tiny dancer.

I know Mason had the big numbers. But the most impessive was his yards after contact..70 plus?? Are you kidding me?

Thats cool Mark, I feel ya. Tra isnt huge but the 3 things that really stand out with him

1.Patience, he waits for a hole to open and hits it hard. How many times did Daniel Thomas and Lamar Miller hit the wrong hole .I did that to my wife by accident and she told me that isnt good LOL

2. Runs with power, he is small but not microscopic. He runs hard and fights for extra yardage

3. This kid can cut on a dime. Thats what makes Lesean MCcoy so good. I am not saying Tra jukes as well as him, but he does a pretty darn good job.

Mark, do you think we have room for another receiver?
Hartline,Wallace,Matthews,Gibson,Binns are all under contract. I think Binns could be that big receiver you covet. I just dont know if we carry 6 receivers on the team.

I would be stoked if we could get someone like Ebron, but I am sure he is gone before we pick. I see us signing Albert this offseason and dont believe we draft a LT in the first

Can anyone make any sense out of why Ireland should stay?

Posted by: Drax | January 07, 2014 at 07:49 AM

No

Mark...can't disagree but we have to manufacture an OL. And the shame is that the person that put the Dolphins in this mess is the one tagged to get them out of it.

The only thing that would keep my interest in this team would be Kubiak. It apparently has no chance of happening but getting Wade along with Gary would be one hell of a start back.

With Ireland the Fins will lose another year of draft picks. It's totally beyond my ability to comprehend the merely obvious with the retaining of Ireland. But this team have him for another year or more.

The 2014 WR class is excellent. Unfortunately, if Ireland is still the GM as expected, it's easy to predict that there will not be a single WR drafted by the Dolphins. It's doubtful a TE is drafted either.

Wallace and Hartline drop a LOT of catchable passes. Gibson and Matthews are average. Clay is very good but another TE is needed. Relying on Keller will show that this team is not serious about trying to win games.

Ireland will focus on DT, OL, and perhaps RB.

Another issue is Tannehill's progress. Currently, he is the fifth rated QB from the 2012 class.

While Luck, Wilson, Foles and RGIII have played in actual playoff games, Tannehill is playing around with trick shots at a sporting goods store.

If Jacksonville picks a competent QB next year, then the Dolphins could have only the fourth best QB in the state of Florida - Behind the starters in Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, and Florida State.

You guys are talking RB, and big WR which I agree is a need along with obviously the o-line.

I also feel like a run stuffing middle backer is in order. It doesn't appear Ellerbe fits the bill.

If it were me drafting, I would be looking for the best available game changer in those three positions 1st rd and deal with the o-line via free agency and 2,3,4, or 5th rd.

Of cousre depending on Jamar Taylor, the RCB spot may still need to be adressed and DT depending on who gets resigned.

Of course I'm assuming Grimes is resigned. Which is a big assumption.

I can no longer keep a straight face when talking dolphins, you think we can get a used hubcap and a couple old tires if we trade Ireland?? Maybe a nickel bag of beach sand and a starfish?

Rosslogoy:

Team unprepared and unready last two weeks: Sherman
Another wasted draft: Sherman

Yea, I am sure all problems are solved now.

I HAVE RUN OUT OF WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE INEPTITUD OF
THE FINS FRONT OFFICE, SO I WON'T.MR. ROSS INDECISION
IS NOT CONDUCTIVE TO ANY GM WORTH THEIR SALT, TO LET
THEIR NAMES BE SOILED BY ACCEPTING A FRONT OFFICE WITH
THE DOLPHINS WHILE & UNTIL J.I. IS THERE. I DON'T REA-
LLY KNOW IF ALL BILLIONARES ARE AS STUPID AS MR. ROSS,
BUT AFTER WATCHING A FEW EPISODES OF UNDERCOVER BOSS,I
BELIEVE THAT QUITE A FEW OF THEM, ARE REALLY CLUELESS.
I DON'T WANT TO BE OFFENSIVE (LOL) BUT MR. ROSS DOES
NOT HAVE THE BRAIN POWER TO RUN THIS CLUB.THE ONLY CHAN
GE THAN THE FANS WANT IS THE HEAD OF JI ON A SILVER PLA
TTER. THEN & ONLY THEN WE'LL BE CONVINCED THAN THE FINS
WILL HAVE A NEW BEGINING

Ross is a dimwitted slow to react douche bag. Only Phailbin is more slack jawed.
