Philbin (safe according to source) fires Mike Sherman

The Dolphins have announced offensive coordinator Mike Sherman has been fired. I am also reporting that coach Joe Philbin is "definitely safe," according to a club source and will return for his third season with the Dolphins.

“I would like to thank Mike for his contributions to the Miami Dolphins,” Philbin said in a statement released by the club. “Mike has been a mentor to me throughout my coaching career, dating back to 1979. He is a man of great integrity, dedicated to his family, his team, his players and his profession. On behalf of the entire Miami Dolphins organization I want to wish Mike and his family the very best in the future.”

Interesingly, Philbin did not wish to fire his "mentor." The coach had previously defended Sherman as an "excellent" football coach. But owner Stephen Ross wanted Sherman out after the Dolphins scored only one touchdown in the season's final two games when the playoffs were on the line.

Ross, however, could not actually fire Sherman as he had signed over hiring and firing power to Philbin in his contract. But obviously, rather than defy his boss, Philbin did as the owner wished.

In fulfilling his owner's desire to "relieve Sherman" of his duties, Philbin accomplished something very important: He solidified his own job status.

Ross had no desire to get rid of Philbin but might have been forced to do just that if the coach had refused to comply with his wishes. In complying, however, Philbin remains safe.

It is unclear if this is the one and only change to the Dolphins this offseason. There is still a chance the team may add a football czar. General Manager Jeff Ireland's status also has yet to be cemented by the team.

I reported in early December that Ross had assured Ireland of returning next season. Obviously, the collapse at the end of the season with the playoffs beckoning made that very less certain.

Well, I gotta start with, boy did I have it all wrong. I thought Philbin would not fire Sherman. So much for that thought. It was indeed a surprise. The next press release I would like to read is that Philbin fires Zac Taylor. Hopefully tht will be on the wire first thing in the morning. Kyle Shanahan would be a good OC for this team and a potential head coach in 2015 when the rest of the bunch is let go after 2015. Being up here in DC, and watching the Redskins, one thing they did do well is run the ball, allow ahort and intermediate pass routes set up long routes, they ran the read option, and developed two QBs in RGIII and Kirk Cousins. That Shanahan developed two QBs with different styles and strengths is a positive sign that shows he knows what he is doing with all positions on the offense. And he was able to get a run game going and a pass game with what may have been the second worst offensive line in the NFL. Also, he is young and has plenty to prove.

LOL, Monkey See. Ape is just a little boy. He is probably about 14 years old (tops). He is probably giggling every time he posts a little silly comment. That is his way to say to himself, I am blogging with men, eh.

Ape Tamer why don't you go and lose your virginity and leave the serious stuff to real men.

Grown Man,

In reality, Ape is one of the many regulars that have alternate troll names. He uses the other names for camaraderie, and the ape name to call us stupid. Probably a grown man with stunted mental development.

You stupid homers Eh? a Flacco and Manning type QB's make the barbies an instant play off team.BUT YOU CLUELESS DELUSIONAL DISEASED IMBECILES ARE TO RETARDED TO COMPREHEND THIS Ja Ja Eh?

You think that Manning (A statue in the pocket) wins with the OL we had this Yr., Eh? Ha ha ha! The games he lost this Yr. were all games were he was getting hammered by the pass rush! Didn't you watch the night games Vs. the Colts and Chargers were the Pagano Bro's were sending the kitchen sink and really rattling Peyton the Great, Eh? Same with Flacco! Reads like you don't have a TV! Eh? I believe good H.C.'s get the most out of their teams because they can scheme and protect inferior pieces but not behind an OL getting handled up front that is always the recipe for disaster just ask Brady why he wasn't perfect in 08, Eh!

Orlando dolphin,

If you have been following my posts the last few days as I have seen some of yours. You would know I'm not in favor of keeping coyle either. Good post

Former Dolphins played/playing in post season that I can think of:

1. Fasano (KC)
2. Ginn, Jr. (Carolina)
3. Brown (Chargers)
4. Welker (Denver) (Prior 5 years w/Pats) Thanks Cam Cam

Anyone else you can think of?

Auburn QB Marshall sucks! I really want to see somebody smack the taste out of Famous Jameis mouth but can't miss wide open WR's with nothing but green in front of them!

I asked preseason,.

I asked midseason.

Now I ask post season.

Is Philbin a leader of men?

Philbin is like a prude woman who wears opaque stockings and sits with her legs firmly crossed and a notebook for extra cover.

I want a loose ho with spread legs and no panties running the show. I want a party and roll coach, not a philosophical chalk board.

Now do we trust Philbin's judgment in hiring an OC. He has already made two stupid decisions in coordinators when he brought in Sherman and Coyle. Is he going to try to bring in a real coordinator like Norv Turner, Gary Kubiak, Chud, or Brian Daboll or is he going to continue to bring his guys from GB with not real experience as coordinators but that will run his pop gun finesse offense?

course he wont grown, he basically knows he will be fired almost for sure after next season

What is with this Dabol love? He was the worst OC in the league with Cleveland. Then he comes here and lo and behold he is the worst in the league again.

Now these fans want him back? WTF?

Norv has been fired more times than Wade Phillips! He was already here in Miami and did NOTHING.

What is wrong with you people?

Fire Ireland? What am I missing - on defense - two pro-bowl caliber tackles Solai and Starks - an All-Pro DE Wake - solid young upcoming talent on the other side with Vernon and Jordan who is a freak and will be great (Am I the only one who saw him covering Gronk down the sideline step for step in game 1 against Pats?) All pro corner in Grimes. On offense the fastest receiver in football who seemingly can get open at will down the sideline in Wallace - 1 of the top 5 possession receivers Hartline - Brandon Gibson who was becoming a beast before his injury and Clay who did after Gibson's injury - Fire Ireland? He has put together more talent by far than any other team in our division.

I agree with you grown man. That is my big concern also. Can we trust Philbin. This team had two great coordinators in Daboll and Mike Nolan. I also liked Daboll too. I thought that he did a great job with Matt Moore. Moore was the # 12 rated passer under Dabolls tutelage in 2011. I would love to see what Daboll can do with Ryan Tannehill.

I don't think Philbin is too hot on Tannehill either. He stated publicly that Pat Devlin is his kind of QB. Devlin had better #s than Flacco at Delaware and is an extremely accurate passer. He won't miss those 30 yds passes to Wallace. Did I sold you on him, Ape?

Wow what a catch

Dabols ancestry is Canadian trailer park. No thanks. Sorry I'm not so high on a proven loser.

Devlin has a weak arm. Can't throw the outs, can't drill the mid range passes. He is a back up for a reason. He was undrafted. 32 teams passed on him 7 times, so 224 times he was passed over in the draft.

How Jeff Ireland still has a job is beyond me. I hate Bill Parcells for bringing us that cancer.

Devlin is accurate on short passes inside the controlled environment of the Sports Science studio. Put him on the field with DE's and LB's coming after him and he becomes mashed potatoes with gravy.

Blame Ireland for the O-line? Do you people think that the coaching staff and front office don't interact or something? Jim Turner and/or Philbin should have sounded the alarm that we were f**cked w/ J. Martin at left tackle - after all they see him up close every play of every practice especially Turner. Instead they convinced Ireland they'd be fine with Martin he just needed to be coached up a bit more - what about the moves Ireland didn't make despite outcries from fans -is Kyle Orton even still playing? What about fleecing the Raiders of their #3 pick who EVERYBODY had as the first or second best defensive player in the draft - how about signing Solai to a reasonable contract 3 years ago instead of backing up the brinks truck after letting him test free agency - Fire Ireland? you people are nuts - and by the way Dez Bryant's mother was a crack addicted lady of the night.

Let's hire a high school coach from hamlet New Jersey , he works wonders with the single wing

I am supporting Auburn tonight. I cannot root for Florida State. I am a Cane. I don't care about keeping the national championship in the State or having the title stay in the ACC. I cannot root for FSU or UF, ever. Go Tiers!

come on tigers beat fsu

Dudes our coaches suck plain and simple all of them

Go auburn

I like Gus

Is it true only gay men and closet queens watch college football?

Auburn seems to have the momentum.

Let's hire Gus

Posted by: Brent | January 06, 2014 at 08:57 PM

I agree Brent. Ireland has been a victim of this coaching staff. Soft guys like Martin are not in Ireland's DNA. It was Philbin that wanted Martin and Ireland had to accommodate him.

Ireland originally wanted McCoy and was over ruled by Ross. Ross wanted flash which is why he brought Philbin but so far nothing. You think he is not regretting listening to a smart football man like Ireland.

tigers simply the better team. sec rules

I guess we are gay queers

how would philbin ever be flash

I will keep my eye on Tre Mason today, if I can find him.

My oldest son went to FSU. Go Noles. Screw the SEC.

dusty,

lol! What I meant was Ross wanted the packers offense. He did not want the traditional play good defense and run the football approach. Guess what the teams that are playing good D and running the football are in the playoffs.

The packers offense works because it has Aaron Rodgers.

how would philbin ever be flash

Posted by: dusty bottoms | January 06, 2014 at 09:07 PM

He was flash to you games 11-14 when we were winning. Remember? You no longer wanted to lose every game. You were a fan for 3 weeks. Now you flop flipped back to your usual dusty doom persona.

no never remember that idiot being flashy at all. i do rem thill though, those were a few fun games. pats comeback drive was awesome

winston welcome to a real conf

Jamie Winston looks a little bit like Kaepernick.

winston never runs

Orlando,

Half the league runs a version of the WCO. The Steelers even switching to it. Copycat league.

I don't know. I only repeated what Philbin said that Devlin is his kind of QB.

Auburn definately has the momentum right now.

yeah rick, i love the steelers next year. that bell kid gonna be a stud

Who is this guy Davis from Auburn? I would keep him under close surveillance.

davis always hurt, has big heart but not an nfl guy

Brent, you are delusional how can you defend Ireland? Look at the garbage he drafts. I agree the coaching staff is weak, but Ireland drafts bust after bust after bust...egnew, pat white, jon Martin, Clyde gates,Daniel Thomas,John jerry,

The worst part is not who he has drafted, but rather what he has missed out on.

He wasted a 5 round pick on a kicker. He's not even trying

Yeah dusty Pitts and SD deserved playoffs more than we did this year. Had it going on at the end of the season.

Notice how Ape immediately disappeared once I exposed him? Yes, ape is one of your regular blog buddies in disguise.

No good on Tre Mason. Out. We have seen enough.

At the bery least Brent and Orlando se to defend there point of view witj logic
Unlike some bloggers who just throw the same argument everytime you contradict them!
However i understand that decades of losing brings out frustration but patience is key.
Ireland's job is to gather talent he did that as far as im concerned his job ends as soon as preseason starts.
Philbin should share the blame in the O-line hes the coach he should know the line was a disaster!
It was not irelands fault he got a wimp when he drafted j. Martin
Step 1 of the stud dolphins offense is now complete(firing sherman)
Step 2 is to hire a little more creative coordinator who can bring the true potential of t-hill and the entire offense!

Dolphan Rick,

I am not just talking about WC offense. I am talking all this zone blocking finesse, no FB, finesse running backs, etc. The Niners have a tough defense and great running game. The Seahawks great running game and tough defense.

All the other passing teams have great QBs but can still run the football when they need to. The fins are a passing team even on 3rd and 1. The problem is that right now they are not a great passing team either.

Look at the packers. Defense is terrible. They did find a running game this year but did not have any for years. That team is nothing without Rodgers.

What is this BCS, a joke? Auburn is the much superior Team.

well yeah orlando, pats are nothing without brady, broncos without manning. take away a franchise qb from any team and they r done

Give Gus Maleahn a blank check right now he's a genius

I will go cook some picadillo.

dusty we had a franchise QB who shattered all the records and we were still done.

yup mandarino, sad isnt it
