Source: Dawson also impressive in interview

The Dolphins are pleased with their general manager search so far because 1. They believe they are identifying quality candidates and 2. Several candidates have so far been very good to exceptional in their interviews, according to various sources.

Include Lake Dawson as one of those impressive interviews.

Like Ray Farmer, which sources said over the weekend was the most impressive interview so far after his meeting with the team Saturday, Dawson similarly left a great impression following his interview on Sunday, according to a source familiar with the process.

Dawson is the Tennessee Titans vice president of player personnel.

So for the time being, it seems Farmer and Dawson lead the pack of five candidates that have interviewed.

This is a constantly evolving dynamic. I am not saying either of these men will be the guy. I am saying both have put themselves in a good position compared to others who have already interviewed. I am giving you as close to a blow-by-blow account of what's happening as possible. This is not the final score, however.

(Reports that tried to piggyback off my Farmer report made a leap, wrongly suggesting I said the Dolphins had found their guy or the process was basically done. The process continues.)

Interestingly, this process puts to the test a habit of Dolphins owner Stephen Ross that I have heard from multiple people he simply cannot shake. Ross often seems to agree with, or fall in love with the latest person he speaks with.

"He'll talk to someone and think that person is great and five minutes later he'll talk to someone else and now that new person is great and he forgets the previous guy," one source said. "He does it all the time."

If that's the case, the candidates that have yet to interview might have unknowingly worked themselves into a great spot.

One of the interviews the Dolphins are trying to nail down, by the way, is for Atlanta director of player personnel Lionel Vital. I am told Vital comes with a strong recommendation that glows in neon: Bill Belichick.

Vital, it must be noted, is also being courted by Tampa Bay and is considered a very strong candidate.

To me, the Belichick recommendation is a two-edged sword. Yes, Belichick knows football and good football men. But it should not escape anyone that his interest is beating the Dolphins as he's done with regularity most of the past dozen or so years.

Also, Belichick can miss. I remind you of his recommendations of Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel for head coaching jobs.

Finally, the Dolphins today are interviewing Green Bay's Ben McAdoo for the vacant offensive coordinator job. McAdoo, who worked for several years with head coach Joe Philbin in Green Bay, is considered the favorite to land this job.

McAdoo has been Green Bay's tight ends and, lately, the quarterback coach but has never called plays. McAdoo recently interviewed with the New York Giants for their open OC job.

Don't worry Air Aponte will install the "flash card offense"

Listen, I'm not overly optimistic because Ross has not made one good hire but firing Ireland has to be a positive going forward.

Their is no upgrade in firing Ireland and keeping Philbin, its typical Steve Ross doing everything the wrong way. That 2 game meltdown at the end of the season told you everything about Philbin you needed to know. 2014 will be another 2011 with lame duck Sparano. Remember that 2011 0-7 start get ready for something similiar.

Someone has to get Ross to reach in his pocket and spend some money on players. How does he expect to win when he's 30 mill under the cap? YIKES!

Cheap Fish

Ross spent over 250 million in extentions and new contracts last offseason. I'd hardly say hes cheap. The Dolphins problem is spending money wisely.

The blog is full of trolls, and thill bashers today!
I hate these days!

No point in reading you pointless comments! I am off!!!

2014 don't let go of the rope!!!

Boy you tell this is the off season. Just nothing going on. Man I can't stand this owner.

dolfan29,

Thats what Ross would like you to believe. In reality its total hogwash. He cut more salary than he added. (Long, Bush, Fasano). His payroll was also less than the prior year and the 2nd lowest in the NFL. He's a cheap SOB that wont even repair his own stadium. And paying for good players or coaches seems out of the question.

The best thing that could happen to the dolphins would be for Mark Cuban to buy the team, he's a proven winner in sports and most everything else. Yes, i know he is obnoxious and annoying but who really cares, enough nice guys here, they always fail.

This should be an easy off season. Draft play makers. Get the o-line in free agency.

With 28 million and not many holes to fill I don't see why not.

Cheap Fish

Im not going to say what money he has or hasnt shelled out in repairs to the stadium but facts are facts. Im not a Ross fan but when he spent huge money on Wallace, as well as Ellerbe and Wheeler. Not to mention Gibson, And resigning Jones and Misi. All i can say is he spent more money than most teams but he didnt spend it properly. We have 30 million under the cap because of good cap management from Aponte.

Have to disagree. We have 30 mill in cap space because Cheapo Ross wanted to pocket the money instead of paying Long, Bush, Carpenter, Fasano, Smith, and Davis.

Move up draft Sammy Watkins. My wish
Stay put get Eric Ebron
Second round and beyond best player.

I didn't like the Dion Jordan pick but for the future its a great pick up.

Vernon and Jordan should be great.

public school must of been closed today judging by the posts....

In some cases I'd even wager the Country Jails had to let a few hundred people out do to overcrowding and half of them ended up posting on Armando's blog...

And for some of you who are actually serious, and going nuts about all this. How the hell do you manage to get through a day..? Armando throws up a blog about this guy or that and you lose you mind, even though the truth is... Half you idiots don't even have a clue about any of these people...

And the OTHER half seem to have some "PERFECT SHINING EXAMPLE" (cue the angels singing).... of the GM or O-co Ross should hire. Just who in the hell is it you want..? Sorry, but Seattles GM, Denvers GM, NE's GM and San Frans GM aren't leaving they're teams... And if one did leave... and he was from a team that didn't make the SB you'd whine....

Pity what idiots seem to stalk these pages... It was once one of the best Miami Blogs out there.... Now it complete garbage....

Cheap Fish

Ok he didnt pay the players you mentioned but what about the players i mentioned. Arnt Ellerbe and Wheeler making great money. You have to say the Wallace isnt to bad off with a 5 yr 60 million deal in his pocket. The dolphins offered Long more money than the rams to stay and he bolted for St louis. Doesnt sound like a team being cheap.

For the time being I would move Jordan to outside linebacker. He's better in space. Resign Grimes. Get Byrd if he hits free agency. If not keep Clemons. I won't get another corner cause Patterson looked great and I would give him another chance.

He also didnt pay Dansby who had a career year elsewhere. Ross had 30 mill to upgrade the talent and he didnt.

Cheap fish

Not going to argue this with you. Dansby was released because of lack of production in our defense and the years he was here. Nobody predicted he goes back to Arizona and has the year he had there. Bottom line is this team spent money in the offseason, it just didnt spend it properly. I cant say they didnt try with the money they spent, but will blame them for the outcome in talent evaluation. Only Grimes, Wallace and Gibson IMO was worth the monies. Wallace would have had another 8 Tds atleast if RT could throw the deep ball with touch

I still believe in the GM hires his own hc principle. Totally eliminates the "FINGER POINTING" principle we've had the last 2 hc/gm administration.

Keeping the hc(Philbin) then hiring a new GM only openly invites more of the same. Don Shula was hired by then GM, Joe Thomas. It wasn't a "force-fed" administration that Ross is feeding dolfans right now.

The definition of "INSANITY" is widely viewed as doing the "SAME THING OVER AND OVER" expecting different results. These "DIFERENT RESULTS" almost "NEVER" happens.

8-8 or worse in 2014, dolfans. Don't allow you own personal "INSANITY" to get the best of you too, like goofy Ross.

And he made extra money from playing a 5th exhibition game. But did he spend it on talent? No. 30 mill pocketed.

Lazor being courted by Lions for OC. Cross Lazor off of the list.

Ireland made us Cowboys south.., and now Philbin is trying to make us Green Bay south...

looks like Lazor is going to detroit.

I disagree with both. We are $30 million under cap because we are not paying franchise QB or LT money to any player on the roster. At this rate of pay, these two positions alone could command $20-$25 million of the $30 million cap we now have.

It only shows in 6yrs of the previous administration we were incapable of securing these high salary cap demand positions. Sparano killed the LT, Jake Long. So, if everything would have been ran correctly as it should have, right now we would be sitting at about $10-$15 million in cap money with a team that had advanced far into the playoffs.

It's all been in combination of bad ownership, management, and coaching staff. That's why we presently sit $30 million under cap. Sitting far under cap is not necessarily a good thing for a "bad team".

Phins are under the cap because Ireland never drafted any stars. Would The Phins be 30 millions under the cap if The Dolphins had players on a level with :

Jason Taylor
Zach Thomas
Sam Madison
Patrick Surtain
Daryl Gardner
Tim Bowens
Chris Chambers
Tim Ruddy
Richmond Webb

...and yes, Ross doesn't spend up to the cap.

Aponte is no genius.

From what I can gather Ross likes her because she's his corporate spy and she kisses his a s $.

The Phins are in terrible shape as an organization.

It will get worse before it ever gets better.

Five more years of irrelevance.

Someday grandfathers will tell their grandkids, at one time The Dolphins actually mattered in the NFL.

Phins are becoming one of the worst organizations in all of pro sports.

If McAdoo is hired as the OC in Miami and he has NO PLAYCALLING experience same as Philbin then ROSS should sell up. This would be the biggest and dumbest mistake ever. It is incomprehensible that it it would happen, but it may. Philbin will want people he is comfortable with who he can direct. That is normal but an OC must have called plays for at least 5 years in my book. It is extremely difficult and requires quick adjustments and lots of insight. I cannot see ROSS allowing McAdoo to get the job although Philbin will want it. Realise also that Philbin is trying to save his job. Whats the best way to do that? After one year of McAdoo Philbin says he has now grown into the job and lets "give him time".Well he is saving his own hide. Dont go for it ROSS. I dont think you are completely stupid ...yet.
The pick in my view needs to the the guy from the eagles who pushed Foles into the top 5 QB in the league. Thats the guy. Can he call plays though?
The GM role has to be a great evaluator and have personal aura and authority so that everyone falls into line....including APONTE.....get her out of the football side of things into cap and contract work ONLY.
Philbin gets ONE more year but if we start 4 zip....goodbye.

Ross had 30 mill to upgrade the talent and he didnt.
Posted by: CHEAP FISH | January 14, 2014 at 05:50 PM

That was very disturbing. Pray for new ownership.

All you geniuses ripping Miami for having interest in McAdoo b ut so is every single other team looking for an OC. I guess they are all idiots too. You people are BEYOND STUPID.

What many fans realize is just to remain 8-8, this team must get better. Every NFL team gets better over the offseason. Only some more than others.

We need to pull near offseason coup for this to be a "solid wildcard" team in 2014. Hopefully, the new GM is smart enough to realize all of these things. Or we're 8-8 to 4-12 at best.

My money is on not making the playoffs and finishing around "7-9-ish".

YG still going strong.

"The GM role has to be a great evaluator and have personal aura and authority so that everyone falls into line...."

Alfy, I believe, first of all a great gm needs to be able to attract the best evaluators(scouts) to his staff. They, not the gm, does all of this "grunt work". GM makes the final decision which of these players actually become Miami Dolphins.

First of all he needs to make nice with Philbin. That's the only way he immediately Aponte in. If not, there's caos from day one. Nothing prospers in midst of caos except for even more caos.

DON'T FEED THE TROLLS....

The fins may be $30 million under cap for next year, but they have 16 unrestricted free agents and 4 restricted free agents. So they need to sign 20 new or existing players with that money. Grimes for $7-8 million leaves $23M for 19 players + $1.2M per player left. What are you going to get with that when you need a whole offensive line?

Sam I Am,

What kind of CAT OINTMENT do you recommend?

Gotta dispute the idea that "every team gets better in the offseason" to some degree.

Age, retirement, free agency defections, etc. can all contribute to a team declining from one year to the next despite whatever moves they may make in the draft or otherwise.

For a very recent example, would you say the Baltimore Ravens improved from 2012 to 2013?

KY Jelly, my man. Wouldn't want to end up with "cat scratch fever" right?

I believe that is a petroleum-based product and I need one composed primarily of CAT OIL, but thank you regardless.

Let's put it this way. They climbed the absolute pinnacle of NFL success, which is to win the SB. Once you've reached the very top, there's nowhere else to go but down.

Declining after being the very best, isn't quite the same as declining and not having ever gotten there. Still, after losing so much over the offseason, they were just as good as us after we "supposedly" had the best offseason of all 32 NFL teams.

They actually kicked our asses too.

Ben McAdoo is exceptionally well-regarded around the NFL and seen as a bright, young coaching talent. So much so that he has even garnered interest as a Head Coach.

The fact that he is panned by some here says nothing about him but EVERYTHING about those posters being utterly clueless imbeciles.

So, Reggie Bush had more total yardage than Lamar Miller, D Thomas, and Gillesie combined!! LOL

TIPPITY TAPPITTY TIPPY TAP!

BIPPITY BOPPITY BIPPY BAP!

Thermal Venus Lamp.

How many posters here besides myself at this time? I bet only 2. One is mar-con and the other Cuban. Times are hard for Armando.

Im here Oscar....LOL
Sam and jg....In my view being seen as the best and brightest means nothing. I want to see a body of work...an OC that has called GREAT plays and has worked with a budding QB. Also the GM does have to be a great evaluator. His scouts will come to him with many names. He has to be able to make a call that is a GREAT call. Thats why they pay him big bucks.Once again I want one with demonstrated history of making great picks. Also one who can control the whole scene politically, because ROSS cannot.
