« Seventh GM interview: Dennis Hickey | Main | In shadow of Bess trade, Dolphins looking for integrity »

Source: Hickey 'hit one out of the park'

When one NFL source floated Dennis Hickey's name to me as a Dolphins general manager candidate Thursday, I dismissed it.

Hickey doesn't seem like a hot commodity. He's something of a career Tampa Bay Buccaneers worker drone. And, after all, his own organization that is conducting a general manager search as are the Dolphins have not interviewed their own guy.

Then on Friday Hickey's name came up again and it turns out not only is he a candidate but a very, very serious candidate, another source familiar with the process said Friday.

I'm told the Hickey interview was among the longest the Dolphins have conducted during the search that has already included interviews for seven candidates. Brian Xanders had a two-day, 11-hour interview earlier this week and Hickey was not far behind him. And I'm told Hickey "hit one out of the park," with Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.

I'm told by league sources that even if Hickey isn't hired in Miami, he is actually so well regarded by the Bucs that he may be asked to remain under the new general manager once that candidate is chosen.

As you know, I've previously reported that Ray Farmer, Lake Dawson and Xanders opened eyes for the Dolphins owner. I would now add Hickey among that company of top tier candidates.

The Dolphins have yet to interview Marc Ross of the Giants or Lionel Vital of the Falcons. But there is now some sentiment among those conducting the Dolphins search that the strength of candidates is already beyond initial expectations. So this search is nearing its end.

The Dolphins will soon whittle the field to perhaps two candidates and then pick their man.

So, yes, the Dolphins are so far very pleased with their search. Yes, they believe they have identified nearly a handful of potential hires.

And, yes, Dennis Hickey is improbably among the top of the group.

Lets get another thing straight, Dawn Aponte doesn't wear the pants of the Miami Dolphins franchise Stephen Ross does & the only reason that Aponte sided with Joe Philbin against Jeff Ireland was because, Ireland hand picked the players Philbin DIDN'T want in last years draft & when they fell out of the playoffs Ireland tried to pin in on Philbin. Granted Mike Shermans predictable outdated offense didn't help matters either but, ultimately it was the players that played badly. Look at Ryan Tannehill, He played very good all year long, until throwing 3 interceptions that costed us that last game.

Orlando dolphan is a troll. Dont feed the troll.

The HC has to accept responsibility for a collapse like the fins had the last two games of the season. He has to be able to lead his team to beating to bad teams like the Jets and Bills. Those two losses were embarrassing. The fins had superior talent to those teams and still got blown out. The Bills won 1/3 of their games against the dolphins, they are a bad team. Philbin could not put his team in position to beat the third string QB for Buffalo, Thad Lewis, with so much on the line.

Then he loses to Geno Smith at home (blown out by Smith). The dolphins looked lost against the Jets. Philbin got his butt handed to him by Rex Ryan. Ryan is 10 times the coach Philbin is. Oh well, at least we will have a shot at Jameis Winston in 2015.

Ryan Tannehill, worst QB in the league?

@ cocoajoe : What makes you think he hasn't been considered for a GM position already ?

Regulars in the blogs- PLEASE READ MY POST @ 1018 and agree or disagree with me! THANKS!!!!

I think my post pretty much sums up the dolphins over the last 3 plus decades....

@ Orlando Dolphan : I beg your pardon. The Buffalo game was expected & ONLY the Jets game was embarrassing.

I think Orlando @10:01 has a valid point. Why in 18 years wasn't Hickey considered for a GM position not just for the Bucs but other teams? Yeah, we know about about Lovie and the regime change but what about the 17 previous years? Was he ever considered by any other teams? Inquiring minds want to know.

Exactly! The dolphins are in disarray. I will be very disappointed if Hickey is the new GM. The rest of the league does not even consider him, there is a reason for that. There have been 4 GM candidates that have turned the dolphins down, there is a reason for that. My theory is Philbin but who knows.

Oh boy, then we're REALLY IN TROUBLE. When it comes to football, Ross needs someone to put his pants on for him. He doesn't even know which leg goes in first.

It's really simple- Ross needs a talent evaluator, a leader, a visionary...that can do this stuff for him. He needs to stick to Real Estate

Pray for new ownership. Ross will never win.

All I know is all you fake A** trolls are going to be crying if Miami hires Dennis Hickey, because we will finally start landing the kind of talent we should have been getting all along if we had a real GM.

tvegas,

I agree the dolphins need a czar that can come in with a vision. He is starting to remind me of Jerry Jones. He is becoming a meddling owner. Let the pros do their jobs.

Unfortunately, it looks like Ross is easily manipulated. It seems to me that Dawn Aponte and Carl Peterson are the ones that think they have the vision. Yikes!

if Rick wasn't paying me I'd tell him to STFU and get out of him mom's basement, he sits in his underwear down there all day. He pays me with his allowance from mom

Hollywood, I asked a question, do you know the answer because I don't.

Philbin is the Dolphin head coach. Philbin is solely responsibility everything Dolphin Football.

Hey Dumba** we don't have basements in florida. You just gave yourself away as a sorry A** Jets fan !!!!

your right Frank @ 10:18,

That's when we also had a legitimate owner: Joe Robie

Hollywood Rick,

There is a reason the Bills were 6-10, they sucked. The fins could not muster 1 point against the Bills and if I remember correctly they ran all over the dolphins' defense. The dolphins were trying to throw the ball into a 20 mph wind. They knew that the conditions would be bad. They made no effort to run the ball and could not stop it either. That is poor game planning, lack of preparation, and poor ability to make adjustments. That is on the coaching staff. The rest of the league had no problems beating Buffalo.

Do not know if anyone has really thought about it, but the Jets (and I hate them as much as anyone) ended up 8-8 and the Bills were 7-9 so all the AFC East is looking average but not absymal as everyone thought. The Jets were playing for the coach's job and the Buffalo home field was bad luck. Should the Dolphins have won, absolutely! But considering the whole offensive line mess, it was a minor miracle the Dolphins were in that position to get in the playoffs at all.

The three headed idiot conducting the , cough, cough, GM search probably can't remember two words spoken by any of the 7 candidates. Does anyone believe that Ross knows what he's hearing or are the other two giving him a daily recap? Keep in mind that Ross is involved and thats not good under any circumstances.
More mediocre Dolphin teams,,,,

I would rather they go after Gamble one more time. But if not go young.......

I have been around sports all my life for 53 years & i can predict sports & decisions better than anyone I have ever known, so you have absolutely ZERO chance of convincing me of anything !

At this point I just hope they interview Polian the last.

Rick,
the a tool shed with electricity is the same thing,

Buffalo was 6-10 and won 2 of its' 6 games against the Dolphins.

"When one NFL source floated Dennis Hickey's name to me as a Dolphins general manager candidate Thursday, I dismissed it.

_________

This alone, "drone", tells exactly why bee keeper Ross would love to place him under queen bee of the hive Aponte. He seems the perfect "neutered gm" candidate.

Geno Smith > Ryan Tannehill

Hey, Joe Robbie was a cheapskate that the coach and players disliked. The WFL (I think that is correct) ripped the superbowl team apart by outbidding Robbie over and over.

No mistaking it, Dawn Aponte is unquestionably queen bee in bee keeper's Stephen Ross' beehive he calls the Miami Dolphins.

Forget about Polian. Remember the situation here. Polian is not coming here to answer to Aponte. That guy has too much pride to do that. He would want full control of football operations including his own HC. No way he would want Philbin as his HC. You are not going to hear names like that interested in a position with the dolphins. Sad but true.

Rick,
I worked with a lot of know-it-alls and those are the same people who never learn anything. I tell them "just because you've been doing it that way for 20 doesn't mean it's right" but your different?? NO

Thank you dolphin Ricks agent!

I don't care who the new GM is- just find the freaking talent baby. The 2014 free agency class and draft class will show us if we found the right person or not, regardless of what their name is.

you see Rick,
If your as smart as you think you are, wouldn't you actually be making money at this like the Pros, your just a mouthy punk that's not as smart as you give your self credit for, but I'll keep taking your money

Yep, I was wrong on Buffalo's record but division rivals always give each other a battle. The Dolphins should have won at home against Buffalo then it would have been a moot point. That one was on the offensive line and the play calling hence Mr. Sherman is gone. I have issues with Phibin at times but overall I like him. Sparano was a disaster from year 2 on. Same with Henne only from year 1.

Stephen Ross will states, Dawn Aponte will be new Dolphins owner when his life expectancy expires.

Dolfans prepare yourselves. Here first act?

Rehire Jeff Ireland and make him her own personal dungeon boy.

Steve Ross save the Dolphins. SELL THE TEAM!

@ Sam I Am : As I said before he is the perfect fit because he is a great talent evaluater & doesn't have to be the loudest voice in the room. That's a good thing, because you can'y have 2 guys like that in the same room & Joe Philbin is already like that.

With Dawn Aponte calling the shots for the franchise, no way she wants a strong GM candidate. She formed an alliance with Philbin to get rid of Ireland. She wants to bring in a puppet for a GM that she can manipulate at will.

Exactly! To endure the same job for 18yrs requires being quite the ass kisser. He would make the perfect "neutered gm" and would surprise me least if Ross names him neutered gm.

How about making Dawn Aponte President of Football Operations and let her pick the players.

Yeah, and her first player evaluation criteria would be crotch size. Then we could end up with potential undrafted rookie fa's becoming our #1 pick.

All depends on crotch size.

WHAT A TOTALLY DYSFUNCTIONAL FRANCHISE!! PATHETIC!

I don't mind working for and answering to a capologist, HC, owner. I carry them proudly in a baggie and always use them as paper weights on my desk.

Sam,

I totally agree. If he hires Hickey, then we know that the GM position down here will just be a figure head. Basically the GM here would be a glorified scout. No one in the league is interested in this guy for GM. This would be he perfect excuse to allow Aponte to run the show.

Ireland did not get fired, he walked away. He was probably asked to be that type of GM. Ireland would not stand for that and left the team. Ross is looking for a scout to name as GM and does not want him to have any decision making power (no matter what he is telling the media). No way guys like Polian, Pioli or Gamble will come here. Future player and coach decisions are going to be made by Aponte. Yikes!

Orlando dolphin-

You should take offense to what I'm saying- you're an idiot. What proof do you have the dawn aponte calls the shots? If you show me proof I will believe you. Everything I've read is that aponte is respected in the nfl.

I think you are an uncloseted chauvinist. I'll bet you had your heart broken by a girl in high school and beer recovered. Now you put down all women.

If you can prove to me anything you are writing, I swear will believe you but don't use conjecture or your fear of women having power as your reasoning. Give me facts man...

Even though Ross has publically denied it. Hickey's interview may be further proof Ross is offering the "watered down" gmship even Ireland turned don.

If this were not true, Hickey would have no business even getting interviewed. You know, unless, errand boy is the position you're actually offering.

Only job I would offer Hickey would be to go fetch my doughnuts. I wouldn't even trust him to line me up a high priced ho'.

11 hours? How many questions can you ask in 11 hours and how many answers are BS?

I have two questions.

Can you re-create the New England Patriots?

Ok, how about the 49ers?

Yes or no.

How about making Dawn Aponte President of Football Operations and let her pick the players.

Well, I dont think that would turn out any worse than Ireland's drafts. haha

Yikes indeed, I'm not going to be in the WAR ROOM by myself, so I won't even have final say over who gets picked. It will be decided on a majority rules vote.

The only consolation is seeing my nads squished in the baggie firmly entrenched on the memos stacked neatly on my desk

What a bunch of trolls you people are. You really must have no life sitting here on a Dolphins blog board running your traps about something you obviously NO NOTHING about ! I'm done wasting my time with you losers, I thought I was hanging out with Dolphins fans that wanted this team to start winning Super Bowls again, but obviously that's not any of you.

Posted by: Frank from PA | January 18, 2014 at 11:18 AM

Nah..... our neutered czar, Carl Petersen has that job.

Lost items are always found in the last place you look.

yeah, Rick, with your special input the dolphins will start winning. Thank god your here, oh gosh don't leave, then what will Ross do??

When the barbies win a Super Bowl the so called trolls will simmer down, untill then USTFU Eh?

Who cares about the crap Dolphins anymore?

Dolphins should revoke NFL membership and join CFL, then a possible championship

Only means Ross footed the bill for the hookers he had come over.

I agree with the Ape Rick, USTFU

Wonder if Kim & Kanye will buy out my ownership percentage?

Face it. No SB in our lifetime for this dysfuntional cheap franchise.
