Statements from Stephen Ross and Carl Peterson

Stephen Ross released a statement about the general manager search that begins on Friday. That search, by the way, will be done with the advise of longtime Ross friend Carl Peterson, who will not have a role with the team beyond that according to the Dolphins owner.

The statement from Ross:

“We will begin interviewing candidates for the General Manager position tomorrow.  It will be a thorough process with the goal of bringing the best person to help us build a team that will be a consistent winner. Carl Peterson will serve as an advisor to me on this search.  Carl and I have had a business relationship for almost 30 years dating back to the USFL and I have tremendous respect for his experience and judgment on team building and football operations. He will advise me on the search but he will not have a role with the Dolphins after the process is over.

"The new General Manager will have autonomous responsibility for the 53 man roster and selecting players during the draft and will report to me.  First and foremost, this person must have a passion for the game and demonstrated player evaluation expertise. They will need to be a person who is a collaborative team player that puts the organization first.  Regardless of reporting structure, the relationship between the General Manager and Coach Philbin must be one of trust, respect, and collaboration, and this will be an area we will look closely at during the process.  This individual also must be a person with integrity who is open-minded and creative.

Our media relations department will update you on the list of candidates when interviews are finalized.  Once the process is complete, I will make the final decision on who to hire.

Coach Philbin and his staff are continuing their offseason activities while conducting interviews for the offensive coordinator position. We are also working on our draft preparation, including our upcoming trip to the Senior Bowl as well as all of the other aspects of player evaluation and procurement.  At the end of this process, we will be a stronger organization with people working together to build a Championship team."

The statement from Carl Peterson:

“I’ve known Steve for a long time and I know that no one wants to bring a winner to Miami more than he does. I look forward to advising Steve through this search and I am confident that he will add an outstanding candidate with a proven track record in talent evaluation to the Dolphins.“

Previously you read that John Wooten had issues with the clarity of the Dolphins GM job. This statement has changed his mind.

"Everything is fine," he said. "Everything is great. No problem."

He is now encouraging minority candidates to interview.

tanny still can't hit a wide open receiver beyond 20 yards...doesn't matter

all are doomed until we find our next Marino

dashe is a dumbo because he is the only one who hasn't figured it out yet LOL.

"This individual also must be a person with integrity who is open-minded and creative."

WTH does this mean? Sounds like marrying a nun and telling her she should be open to multiple partners, positions, and bodily orafices.

Makes absolutely no sense.

yes no Peterson....

Philbin reads off cue cards in the locker room...its like weekend at Bernies with this guy. mouth wide open on sidelines, looks confused all the time...I don't get it.

Time to sell Ross. Stick to what you do best in your New York offices.

Will its not tomorrow yet but that's not necessarily good news or bad.

It certainly doesn't scream "strong" GM.

Exactly how many gm's has Carl Petersen hired?

I would not be surprised if Briane Gaine ends up with the job. Anyone else accepting this job may himself be looked upon as a joke by the rest of the league by taking the hire.

Just when we thought Ross could not be any dumber...

Oscar,Give Ross and Peterson their LDOPE Eh?

fin4life,

How much money have you made this year recruiting athletic talent last year? Just wondering!

Transferable skills refers to projecting that a player is perhaps quick or strong enough to compete at the NFL level.

Posted by: promichael | January 09, 2014 at 08:08 PM

I've never been in the talent acquisition business I have however followed this Sport both Collegiately and Professionally for over 30 Yrs. and before 1993 you could afford to take bigger chances on potential because there was NO FA! If you had a set core in place you rode them for a decade while you tried developing those diamonds in the rough. In the FA ERA this just isn't afforded anymore!

A perfect example is Ahmmad Brooks (OLB for S.F.) who today is one of the steadiest if not more underrated at his Pos. Back in 05 he hit the supplemental draft and was a player BIG on Nick Saban's radar coming out Va. he needed time to develop so Saban had him pegged in Rd-4 but the Bengals jumped the gun a Rd ahead and took him with the 3rd Rd pick (there 06 3rd Rd pick) He started some games for them but became a salary cap casualty now blossoming for S.F. (for them less investment) In other words the text book def. of "making your money this Yr. gambling on yesterdays athletic potential"

These days time isn't on your side so you need to acquire the best system fit even if you view his ceiling lower than the player you can develop! Those players are the ones you gamble on in the lower Rds were the reward outweighs the risk. With regards to a committee approach is you'll end up with a group who can't agree on one player while later compromising on one in order to get the one he wants with you compromising on his, IMO it doesn't work!

It's why you have a Scouting Dept. who builds the G.M. a tally sheet he later needs to place in order of BA by position in order to make a decision on the players available at his pick and were the best value is regarding the different positions of need.

Every time we have a hire, Ross makes it entirely impossible to find the best candidate. This is tough to do even when doing EVERYTHING right.

Then Ross handicaps the situation to virtually impossible. Then always CLAIMS to want a championship franchise while doing everything possible to prevent this from happening.

What a flappy eared clown!

Thanks for setting the record straight Mr Ross. I hate how speculative reporting has been giving this organization a bad name for years. It's basically slander, and I'm sick of it.

Playoffs doesn't have to equate a winning record.

Agreed. My 95% rating has taken a hit. But Dashi is still a grade A student. Over 90% correct still.

On predicting the Playoffs now? That is a way of Dashi throwing some optimism on the constant negative vortex that surrounds this fan base.

Everyone knows the rules. Real Predictions on the season are made after the last preseason game.

Dash I just wants to go into the off season with a positive state of mind.

And Again. If the Fins don't make the Playoffs shouldn't Dashi be the only fan that should be angry. Because the team didn't meet my expectations.

Slander? Ross' statement basically con firms what was earlier reported. Ross wants a "weak gm".

So Carl Peterson won't be Overlord. That is OK. As long as Ross has a Knowledgable Football person with him to make the GM decision.

Also, now that black guy from that committee should be happy. Ross gave a public explanation on what he wants out of his GM. You can tell that PR guy he hired from the Jets is on his job.

One thing is for sure the Fins will be more transparent than before. The Curtain has been lifted.

"The new General Manager will have autonomous responsibility for the 53 man roster and selecting players during the draft and will report to me. First and foremost, this person must have a passion for the game and demonstrated player evaluation expertise.

2 Things I take from these statements:

1) I guess we can all thank Fritz Pollard for forcing Ross's hand in revealing what the job entails. On PFT they report that Pollard issued his statements at 6:51 P.M. EST. Ross issued this one at approximately 8:00 P.M. EST. Seems the minority spokesman struck a nerve and got the team to share info. they for whatever reason weren't ready to disclose. Also having Peterson by his side when issuing statement instead of his current F.O. speaks volumes to me!

2) It appears Ross will indeed hire someone with autonomy which bolds well for the possiblities. Just maybe he hadn't released a statement because he wanted to inform Aponte of his decision before hand looking to quell any hard feelings. It does seem that this situation does put Philbin on the hot seat needing to produce next Yr. BIG TIME! Not much faith in this but hoping for the right hire at G.M. with the aspirations of beginning thelong march back!

By the way I also want KHAAAAAAAAAN! If you've read my posts over the last Season you know I've wanted to raid the Steelers F.O. for sometime!!

One thing is for sure the Fins will be more transparent than before. The Curtain has been lifted.

Posted by: Dashi | January 09, 2014 at 08:49 PM

No, we've only discovered just how much the curtain is hiding, and where there is one cockroach, there are more.

Dashi, come back when you reach, if you reach, puberty.

Ross: "Regardless of reporting structure, the relationship between the General Manager and Coach Philbin must be one of trust, respect, and collaboration, and this will be an area we will look closely at during the process."

Translation: The GM must be willing to work with a Coach similar to a "Weekend at Bernies." In short, Ross is trying to do a shotgun marriage with a GM and Head Coach of limited ability and accomplishment.

This 'stucture' did not work with Ireland/Sparano or Ireland/DawnJoe. A prediction: it will not work with NEW GM/DawnJoe either.

The new GM will not be the best person for the job; it will be a person willing to do the job for a few million a year.

No GM on the rise is going to want to mate his career with DawnJoe. Especially if he cannot pick the QB either.

Ireland is lucky to be out of this mess. He'll probably go work for New England and win a fistful of Superbowls.

So the Fins get rid of Ireland and now the Fans feel even less sure with the team.

Kind of funny actually.

Isn't that what some of you always wanted. Page after page, day after day FIRE IRELAND!!

I forgot to credit another/earlier poster for the 'Weekend at Bernies' reference with regard to Philbin.

DawnJoe lives to lose another day.

When you can't make decisions on your own, they get made for you. That is EXACTLY what happened tonight. Some ridiculous Alliance embarassed Ross on the national scene. That is what it took for Ross to make a statement. In other words, he let someone else dictate his agenda.

Ross is a weak leader not remotely competant to guide this team into the future. Period.

What time is it?

It's Dawn,Joe.

Slander? Ross' statement basically con firms what was earlier reported. Ross wants a "weak gm".

Posted by: Sam I Am | January 09, 2014 at 08:44 PM

He very matter of factly says the new G.M. will have complete autonomy over the roster and with the draft reporting soley to him. The only deal breaker will have to be keeping Philbin on board which we all know means till the Sunday after week-17 if this team is again at or under .500

Listen you have to assume now that Ireland was basically forced out (nobody would have took that altimatum!) because everybody managed to convince Ross that he was to difficult a person to work with. Those excuses go out the window with a new G.M. what is Philbin going to say next Yr. that he was monkey wrenched yet again?

This lines up for a Playoffs or bust scenario for marble mouth! If were to believe what Ross issued and I do because while not the biggest Peterson fan I do believe given his history with the game that he adviced Ross on the potential backfire going the other route could have with disasterous consequences.

Dashi,

I agree. It's funny.

I was one who thought that Ireland needed to be let go for quite a while. I think he's probably a really decent person overall, but I felt his time as GM was not a good one.

However, given all that is coming out over the past year, I'm beginning to wonder if much more blame could have been placed on DawnJoeRoss.

IT'S THE QB STUPID Eh?

Posted by: fin4life | January 09, 2014 at 08:52 PM

Fin4life, I believe this is the same exact package Ireland turned down. GM has no power to hire or fire anyone. No real gm will take this gig.

What sickens me most is Ross is 100% clueless of the negative impact of watching this complete farce is having on present players. Like fans, they have to be going , "wtf" too.

Playing under an awful owner like this, players have to be feeling "ZERO PRIDE" in representing a franchise like this when hitting the playing field. They'll only play hard in contracts years to either get bigger pay days or move to their next team in fa.

I have a terrible feeling that it may be quite some time before this franchise sees 8-8 on the playing field ever again. We may be seeing4-12 to 6-10 for quite sometime now. At least until Ross wises up or up and sells.

fin4life,

You may be right.

I too have a feeling that a 4-14 to 7-9 season is on the way.

The team has too many question marks from QB, OL, RB, LB, CB, DT and even TE and WR. No one knows anything about the 2013 draft class except that the kicker is probably below average. Tannehill will have to do more than practice trick shots at Dick Sports to improve his deep ball passes.

Forcing Irleand out is just another testament to Ross's absolute weakness. He should have said the results weren't there and I FIRED him. Show some backbone.

Dashi, more transparency? When one of the head hunchos, Dawn Aponte, index card the hc's pressers, even his victory speeches?

Either it's proganda proliferation at it's ugliest, or the hc is a complete moron.

Actually, it seems this football team became a little less transparent when Mr. Non-Transparency himself, Bill Parcells, left.

We may as well have had Dawn Aponte herself do Philbin's pressers and victory speeches. Either the Dolphins have become the "iron curtain" or Philbin's a complete moron, meaning he isn't really qualified to hold a hc position.

Posted by: Sam I Am | January 09, 2014 at 09:06 PM

Hard to dispute you given the track record of Ross but I have to at least believe that a 6-10 campaign pulls the plug on marble mouth. I do believe we can now say with 100% authority were Starks middle digit was aimed at and it wasn't at Ireland! So your gut feelingon 2014 maybe a forgone conclusion but as far as it goes!

Pelo,

I'm sorry but it is getting late for your Master Baiting Tactics. I know you just can't help yourself, You are a Master Baiting Fiend. After a while it just becomes an addiction and you can't even leave your house because you spend all your time Master Baiting on the Internet. I hope you get the point you Master Baiter. (Even though it sounds like you would enjoy the Shaft)

You have and will never beat me. Even though it sounds like a Master Baiter like you will love to one day beat Dashi. To bad I don't roll that way.

Now go ahead and repeat the same 5 Dashi insults you have been spewing for the last 2 years. The reason I no longer like to go back and forth with you. Your jokes are Corny, Boring, and Repetitive. You were that kid who only knew that 1 Yo' Momma joke and every day will repeat it expecting someone will laugh with you. By now we would've kicked you out the circle and told you to sit in a corner.

The Internet must have done wonders for your social life, you Master Baiter.

Finclosure: A Movie

Keith Richards as Joe Philbin
Woddy Allen as Steve Ross
Chad Henne as Ryan Tannehill
Kevin Hart as 1st GM candidate interviewed

IRELAND WILL RESURFACE FLIPPIN BURGERS AT A LOCAL BURGER KING NEAR YOU.

I remember the good ole days of only being pissed because Marino could not get us a sb championship.

Now it's been downgraded to when are we ever going to be a playoff team again. My how things have changed.

We now get to playoffs about as often as Marino got us to the sb.

Sam I Am.... would you be happy if Ross sold the team, everyone died, and you got laid??

This is very sad. Ross has now officially bought this team down to the Loria level. This team has talent but obviously is dysfunctional according to everything that has come out from Armando this last few days. Ross does not even want a "weak GM", he wants a glorified talent evaluator. How many teams in the playoffs have this structure? NONE. Ross is putting a band aid over a gaping wound. I don't know who Ross is listening to but it is certainly not people who build great football teams. Our new GM candidate will be nothing but a glorified draft picker with very limited power.

...will need to be a person who is a collaborative team player that puts the organization first. Regardless of reporting structure, the relationship between the General Manager and Coach Philbin must be one of trust, respect, and collaboration, and this will be an area we will look closely at during the process...

Who would come here under these conditions?

Dashi, homework finished?

Un. Freaking. Believable. Change the name to Miami Catfish (football bottom feeder).

Mr. Ross: You are hereby certified a moron owner. Just sell the outfit and end the suffering. It's an outfit; because a team would imply having a recognizable hierarchy.

I'll start the bidding at 50 bucks. Not worth much more than that. First move would be to fire the entire staff, starting with Aponte. Then visit Shula.

We may as well have had Dawn Aponte herself do Philbin's pressers and victory speeches. Either the Dolphins have become the "iron curtain" or Philbin's a complete moron, meaning he isn't really qualified to hold a hc position.

You KNOW I agree here 100% in all honesty I would have rather rolled the dice on Kevin Sumlin whose a former LB and breaths fire on his sideline. If going the safer route Jay Gruden seems a nice pick to succeed although he may have gone to the wrong Org. to start given every Coach hired in the Snyder regime has crashed regardless of pedigree.

Loria is a gem of an owner compared to Ross lol

Dashi do you realize when you write 10 paragraphs to try to defend yourself against the trolls that you are admitting they have won? They have your number and it is nothing but an admission of defeat on your part.

One day, maybe, you will grow up. Nos vemos.

Thank goodness we don't have an owner that mettles in football affairs.

How come Gamble is not on the list? Because he will be stuck with Philbin, that is why. Ross, it doesn't make sense to hire a GM that can't at least chose his coach this year or next year. At least give them that option. PLEASE!! Let's get the Dolphins back to where it was with Shula.

Sparano has to be laughing...

Sam,

Say what you want the Fans and the Media are now being granted more info than before.

Also, You keep repeating the index cardthinbg which is pretty asinine to me. Someone said it perfectly, Maybe Philbin uses the Index Cards to remember Talking points.specially with the Sfla media that can spin any comment into a negative.

And on the lame joke you tried to REPEAT that Philbin won't be able to call plays without an index Card. WTF DO YOU THINK THAT PLAY CALLING SHEET HE WALKS AROUND WITH ALL GAME IS? ONE BIG INDEX CARD YOU GENIUS!!

Sam I Am.... would you be happy if Ross sold the team, everyone died, and you got laid??

Not necessarily in this order, but, it might be nice to get laid if you got to watch. Take pictures, your wifey may like what she sees too.

Wrong. Ross TOLD them to draft Tannehill.

Dashi, homework finished? SMOOCH BABY!

Nice though I'd like to tweak the cast.

Don Knotts as Joe Philbin GAWWWLEE!
Julianne Moore as Dawn Apnte
Haley Joel Osment as Tannehill

Kevin Hart as 1st interview is "INSPIRED"

Peterson with Ross wont want his own reputation tarnished by making a poor appointment...

There is only a couple of ways this goes:

1 Aponte gets the GM role with a "Head of Football Personnel" type under her. This person makes the personnel decisions ONLY.

2 They move Aponte sideways with more $$$ and bring in a real GM who fires Joe Vanilla after a year.

Well, you're in luck, there's a chance Ross might sell the team, there's also a chance that everyone will die, but there's no chance you'll get laid.

Sigh, you must be the most miserae SOB in the world.
You need Xanax and medicinal my brother...

Thanks fin4life. I like your tweaks. lol

I would like Stephen Ross to show his commitment and dedication to the Dolphins and their fans by serving hot dogs at home games next year.

Rinse and Repeat. Again how are you and me going to insult each other when a 3 year old has more jokes than you.

The best thing you can do is leave. Cause against Dashi all you are doing is standing up to get smacked down again. You Master Baiter.

If TCHOKE could of hit on half of the CLUSTER plucks on long balls not just to WallaCe but the ones he MISSED to BH "2" for you STUPID HOMERS.the PASTY FACED PUNK Arse USELESS POS AT QB for the Fins, WOULD HAVE SAVED THE JOBS of Sherman,Ireland,THE punk QB coach who is a useless DORK on the payroll Eh?

Is it just me, or reading how disrespecting some posters here are, at times make you wanna puke you're a fan of the same team?

Makes me want to go blow my brains out because I have something in common with these type of people. Yet, they are always the ones here crying of being disrespected.

I'm done on this matter, so those who know who they are, post away because I will not reply. I'm done.

I was using sarcasm, FYI.

Self prescribed,

I'm doing alright tonight, but thanks! Lol.
