Statements from Stephen Ross and Carl Peterson

Stephen Ross released a statement about the general manager search that begins on Friday. That search, by the way, will be done with the advise of longtime Ross friend Carl Peterson, who will not have a role with the team beyond that according to the Dolphins owner.

The statement from Ross:

“We will begin interviewing candidates for the General Manager position tomorrow.  It will be a thorough process with the goal of bringing the best person to help us build a team that will be a consistent winner. Carl Peterson will serve as an advisor to me on this search.  Carl and I have had a business relationship for almost 30 years dating back to the USFL and I have tremendous respect for his experience and judgment on team building and football operations. He will advise me on the search but he will not have a role with the Dolphins after the process is over.

"The new General Manager will have autonomous responsibility for the 53 man roster and selecting players during the draft and will report to me.  First and foremost, this person must have a passion for the game and demonstrated player evaluation expertise. They will need to be a person who is a collaborative team player that puts the organization first.  Regardless of reporting structure, the relationship between the General Manager and Coach Philbin must be one of trust, respect, and collaboration, and this will be an area we will look closely at during the process.  This individual also must be a person with integrity who is open-minded and creative.

Our media relations department will update you on the list of candidates when interviews are finalized.  Once the process is complete, I will make the final decision on who to hire.

Coach Philbin and his staff are continuing their offseason activities while conducting interviews for the offensive coordinator position. We are also working on our draft preparation, including our upcoming trip to the Senior Bowl as well as all of the other aspects of player evaluation and procurement.  At the end of this process, we will be a stronger organization with people working together to build a Championship team."

The statement from Carl Peterson:

“I’ve known Steve for a long time and I know that no one wants to bring a winner to Miami more than he does. I look forward to advising Steve through this search and I am confident that he will add an outstanding candidate with a proven track record in talent evaluation to the Dolphins.“

Previously you read that John Wooten had issues with the clarity of the Dolphins GM job. This statement has changed his mind.

"Everything is fine," he said. "Everything is great. No problem."

He is now encouraging minority candidates to interview.

A hamster could draft better than Ireland.

Despite the fact that we have no idea who the next GM is going to be, I'm finally looking forward to the draft.

So basically what Ross has said is that this was Ireland's fault. The 53-man roster and draft are his. Team player means Ireland wasn't a team player. Anyone interviewing for this job better watch their back. Philbin is the snake and Aponte is the snake charmer.

Also, the only reason this statement of hierarchical structure was provided was because Ross needed to dance for an outside "minorities" in hiring group.

If you look at it objectively, only Taylor had presumably nagging injuries that kept him off the field. Jordan, Jenkins, Thomas, Davis, Sims, Gilli and Jones had only minor nicks, and could have seen much playing time thru-out the year.
And how much can the injury report be manipulated?
And Oscar, could it be that Philbin felt very comfortable in the near future, but not so comfortable in its extension.

RT is a waste of time, there is no running back, there is no O line, there is no run defense, and there is no brains in the front office.

Who on Earth said that Philbin advised Ireland to draft DJ. Any documentation of that?

Me too. This will be the first draft I'm excited about in 6 years.

This means that the only person that can fire Philbin is Ross. I have a problem with that given Mr. Ross' propensity to drag his feet on terminating people. Philbin could be here for five more years of 8-8.

Well, that would be an improvement over the last 5 years.

Actually I am so relieved. Now that I know there is absolutely no chance for the playoffs in 2014, I have no need to waste my hopes on what will only be dissappointment.

Fred S. You are clear evidence that a Fool can never act a Wise Man.

You should visit this site tomorrow during the day for the Tannehill man crush guys or should I say Canadian Blow hards posting and defending the lame QB who will never be a franchise QB.

I wrote about that here. When Incognito left and we needed a G, Philbin proceeded to play the rookie UFA Brenner having Garner, Watkins(who nobody saw all Season) and Dallas Thomas, who was drafted as a G. Anybody here can explain that to me?

I'm watching Philly in the playoffs at Connor Barwin is all over the place.

I'm like "I wish we had players like that".

If the dude we interviewed had anything to do with player selection. We definitely need him.

Hey fin4life,

Coker WON! He brought the U a national title and had one stolen by a ref who threw a flag 5 seconds later. Don't put Philbin in the same class.

But, yes I agree Philbin is Cokers doppleganger.

Oscar I feel that if you don't seek the consent of the coach to give up the first 2 draft picks for a player that the coach does not even want, then we really had very big problems in the FO. I would assume that a decision like this had to be agreed to if not rquested by Philbin.
I would assume that at worst Philbin chopped on that move
But I can also see Philbin complicit in this decision which caused a synergism between Philbin and Ireland that was totally misguided.
That is why I say I hope our new GM is a much better evaluator and will take everything Philbin tells him he wants and who he wants into consideration but not as gospel.
We need to start drafting best available players
we need starters NOW not in a few years
Even though we have a tough schedule remember we beat 4 of the playoffs teams even though we have some large holes to fill in our personnel.

Jamar Taylor a high second round pick but can't beat out Nolan Carroll or Jimmy Wilson??
Classic Ireland move.

You dumb ass, you try to scrutinize my post and all you do is reaffirm what I said.
Your alter-ego(its true) is likewise so stupid.

We should of course give credit where credit is due. Tannehill threw for more yards than any rookie in the history of the franchise, including Marino.

Also, even though he missed Wallace at times, he completed more passes to Wallace in a single season than even Big Ben ever could.

Both impressive stats. No doubt he has plenty of upside.

Assume nothing, RalphFL. If you haven't noticed, there WERE big problems in the FO last Season.

I also saw how Barwin was covering Jimmy and flying all over the field.

TannePuke ranked 37th in yards per pass attempt which is the best measure of QB (in)efficiency. He's just F'N horrible.

Oscar, I want you to eat five almonds now.

Is it my imagination or are People contradicting them selves WITHIN THEIR SAME POST. May I ask how much have you used Today?

TannePuke got Sherman and Ireland fired. He SUCKS!

Oscar, this further reiterates my post. Everyone knows that Thomas is a guard, but Philbin constantly tried to use him as a T. I think to intentionally make him look incompetent.

YOU SIR ARE OBVIOUSLY AN IDIOT LOL

Funny, Philbin was, Hardin. Could it be that Ross had grown tired of Ireland and there was a plan in place to get rid of him? Hmm...

Tossed salad and scrambled eggs.

Yet again, the blog instigator makes an accusation with no background to substantiate his position. To further insure his obvious adolescence, he uses the childish acronym LOL.

Oscar,I had not contemplated the involvement of Ross in this diabolical scheme. That is an insightful observation.

Hardin Drye, was it a guy?

In any case, all those statements above from Ross and Peterson have to be read very carefully. I have read them x3 now. First, talent evaluator was repeated several time there. So that's what it will be a talent evaluator, a Personnel man only. Second, this person will be responsible for the 53 man roster and selecting Players in the Draft and will report only to Ross. It is the same deal that it was with Ireland, to assemble a good group of Players that fit in with Philbins philosophy. Only that one didn't work out and the answers why it didn't are in those paragraphs from Ross.

It is obvious that Peterson considers Ireland not to be a consistent and experienced enough talent evaluator.

I thought Philbin did a good job of dealing with the Martin fiasco. He is a detail oriented intelligent guy. He does a good job of handling in game decisions such as clock management and challenges, penalties haven't been a big problem. I think his one flaw has been not holding his coaches accountable for underperforming. He reluctantly let Sherman go and should probably do the same with Coyles. Sticking by his guys that aren't getting the job done will lead to his firing if there's no playoffs next year. Hopefully the new GM gets him a real o line and we don't have to talk about this crap next year.

It appears to me that Ross is not willing to give autonomy to anyone at this point. I think this power will have to be earned.
It is obvious that Ross is working off of his business experiences.
I do not like the pieces/parts at a time method of acquiring personnel, but I am not going to say it can not work. But, it is not the most conventional application of methods to fill our staff.

Yes, Texas. Answers to the riddle that was last Season are beginning to arise. We should know some more of them in the coming days. GN.

Mando - Adam - Greg - & Staff:

We know you guys are working overtime...BIG TIME.
I can't help but think that maybe you're influencing (however slight it may be), the outcome of situations.

You guys are right on track.

As a fan since the Danny Thomas days (look it up), I've come to really appreciate the Mi-Herald staff. Thank you. Don't let up. If you got it, drop it. If you don't got it but think it, drop it anyway.

Things are shaking up....but is it enough? In the immortal words of Nicholson in Batman; "This town needs an enema". Just, paraphrase that in a Fin application.

In an effort to change the subject; I know we need OL desperately. I have been reviewing the OL in the first round this year. Several come with high praise. I am not impressed with the high OT prospects. I see many problems with them.
Zach Thomas, to me, appears to be the best OL in the draft.
He has size detriments. He is the best all-round blocker in the draft.
He has played LT in his college career, but he can play anywhere on the OL in the pros.
Due to his size condemnations, he will drop.
I think we should sign a LT in FA, and then fill in from there in the draft.

Sam I am... you truly are clueless. I don't comment on this blog anymore because it isn't what it use to be when the team was actually really bad not just average. But comments like your show just how far this blog has fallen. Just out of curiosity have you posted under any other names in the past?

once a proud gold standard of the NFL the Miami Dolphins are now a joke

The knock on this guy is his arm length. I say, just watch him. He makes his blocks and stays with them.
I think it is possible that we can trade down and still get him because he is not prototypical.

In an effort to educate my brethren on this blog, I present to you James Hardin JR. This guy is the truth.
He has power, elusiveness, speed, and an uncanny awareness of reading blocking schemes.
What's more; he want's it.

I'm a Miami fan in SF. Local (Raiders) radio is lamenting their front office/coaching situation saying if they get any worse the Raiders will be as bad as Cleveland And Miami.

Armando stirs the pot per usual with his speculation and creative writing. I hate Armando Salguero. I think this is a pathetic excuse for a human being.

Philbin reads off cue cards in the locker room...its like weekend at Bernies with this guy. mouth wide open on sidelines, looks confused all the time...I don't get it.

Time to sell Ross. Stick to what you do best in your New York offices.

That's funny!! Exactly right Stach!!!

Philbin and Ross would make great dopey cartoon characters. This neutered GM hiring is a joke!! I can just picture Ross in the interview room with a pair of scissors in his hand.

Just boycott tickets and merchandise!!!!!!

When his seats are emptier and his revenue stream dries up then he'll respect our opinion and wise up.

He doesn't want to listen to reason, then hit him in the wallet!!!

Like I said earlier " Ross is the root of the Dolphins Problems and were not gonna be a Super Bowl contender until Ross sells to a person with Football smarts". Ross, you are throwing good money after bad money, I would expect you to be smarter than that. Just sell the team and move on.... It's not gonna get better in Miami, you will see. A smart owner would hire a GM with no perimeters to build a team as he sees fit. Who with any Moxy would take this job?

It seems that Steve Ross has tightened up the GM job description that was bothering so much of the NFL kingdom. When the final selection is over, Miami should have a GM with sole power over acquiring and maintaining the 53 man roster.

Seemingly mindful of the wilfulness of the previous GM and possibly somewhat reactive to past issues, Ross stated, "Regardless of reporting structure, the relationship between the General Manager and Coach Philbin must be one of trust, respect, and collaboration, and this will be an area we will look closely at during the process." Pretty clear who makes the menu and how those groceries should be chosen.

GM positions around the league vary in responsibility. It seems the Dolphins will`not try to reinvent the position after all but allow the new GM an unfettered shot at producing a winning franchise, Joe Philbin notwithstanding.

I wish Mandich was still around to give us his opinion on this effed up team. It starts at the top with Rosso the puckered anus faced clown running the circus.

Just boycott tickets and merchandise!!!!!!

When his seats are emptier and his revenue stream dries up then he'll respect our opinion and wise up.

Thank you thank you thank you
I need a break from all those chimichanga farts.

The Dolphins are at work in the offseason getting Aponte to write statements on index cards for Ross and Peterson.
If I was a betting man I would wager that they choose an offensive lineman with the first pick in the draft. He has to be more offensive than Martin but NOT as offensive as Incognito.
Hey Kipersauraus could be hired as a consultant on this issue, then Dawn Aponte could get a raise cause she will definitely have to write his statements on an index card with crayons.

Advice. "Advise" is a verb. "Advice" is a noun. Journalist.

Armando is a weasel, in the same vain as Adam Schefter. Speculative reporting ! How about getting facts ? What's more sickening is reading the responses from idiots who are taking Mando's crap reporting as FACT.

MR.ROSS,Isee that you insist that keeping Drooling joe vanilla, who cant do much correctly is your main priority. How do you expect to hie a good G.M. when you have a certified MORON as your head coach who has no accountibility for anything that went wrong with the season.Johnathin martin, mike sherman O/C he is a great football mind per your quote 2 days before you threw him under the bus to save your own pathetc weasel self.Phillbin makes most of our previous H/Cs look like geniuses, including tony sporano the certified moron himself.Mr.Ross keep paying attention to your red carpet, prejects and let the field preformance stink which will happen if you keep stoic drooling joe as our
