« The complex dynamic of Philbin firing assistants | Main | Judgment day 1 over: Stephen Ross departs »

Stephen Ross at Dolphins camp today

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross arrived at the training facility Thursday morning via his helicopter and it is expected whatever decisions he mulled and pondered about the hiring and firing of assistants and personnel people the last few days will be made today.

As you read here, the Dolphins coaching staff is on the line and while Ross wants change, coach Joe Philbin is resisting that change.

The fate of GM Jeff Ireland is also at stake today. I reported a month ago that Ireland had been told he was safe. Much has changed since then. But I'm told the club owner has been struggling with this issue because he likes Ireland and doesn't want to go back on his word.

We'll see.

Vegas,

You sir are one of the good posters. I wasn't referring to you.

But you can see the Mental Midgets Dashi is talking about.

I understand Dashi's opinion isn't popular here because Dashi defines what a real Dolphins Fan is. Call me #1 homer if you want. I actually take it as a compliment. You are suppose to love your team unconditionally. That is what being a real fan is all about.

Plus, I actually like having debates. We can't always agree.

The only problem I have with is that little group who tries and fulfill their social life by coming on here and insulting people because they have no one to socialize with in real life.

Instead of firing anyone Steve Ross said pass me the coleslaw and cornbread ,yup that's right he bought everyone sonny's BBQ yup that's right there having a freakin party hurrah hurrah we suck

---------------------------------

If it was Sonny's BBQ, he is obviously punishing them.

Does Apomte give good head?

Korky the clown > Philbin

Ross maybe here in the house, to announce Philbins extension and make him GM as well.

MANDO; HAPPY NEW YEAR 2U & URS. ROSS IS NOT GOING TO
FIRE ANYONE. HIS MOTIVES 4 OWNINF A FOOTBALL TEAM IS
GREED & PROFIT, NOT THE LOVE OF THE GAME. IF HE WAS
GOING 2 DO ANYTHING, IF WOULD HAVE DONE BY NOW. HE IS
PRETENDING TO BE ANGRY, BUT THAT'S BS.WHEN AN OWNER
GETS REALLY ANGRY, THEY ACT. THEY DON'T HAVE TO ANA-
LIZE ANYTHING WHATSOEVER. HE IS IN CHARGE, THESE PEO-
PLE R NOT HIS. FIRE EVERYONE INCLUDING PHILBIN. SHOW
THE FANS U R REALLY PISSED, OTHERWISE U CAN KISS GOOD
BY TO ALL OF US -THE FANS. U WILL NEVER SEE US AGAIN
UNLESS & UNTIL U EARN AOUR TRUST AGAIN. VERY, VERY SAD
SITUATION FOR ALL OF US DIEHARD FANS. NOT ONLY WE HAVE
BEEN LOSING 4EVER, BUT WE HAVE A BUNCH OF IMBECILS IN
CHARGE OF AUR BELOVED DOLPHINS.

MIT,

"I like to think I can be honest regarding this team but I think the only things we do have at a competent NFL level this year were a receiving corps, qb, and pass rushers and one CB. That's it. We had nowhere near the proper supporting cast."

I agree with this overall. I'm still very skeptical of Tannehill, primarily due to his lack of deep ball accuracy and games like the last two to end the season. I also think the team needs another WR and TE to complement those on the roster.

But, I feel you are right in that most of this team just is not 'there' yet. After six full seasons of rebuilding and rebuilding, it seems like the team should be more complete at this point.

ross struggling about firing ireland cause he told him weeks ago he was safe, now doesnt want to go back on his word. wow , how is ross this dumb with all the money hes made

We'll soon find out if Ross thinks Ireland has done a good job picking the groceries.

Marc the Texans have already signed Bill O'Brien. Spineless Ross is firing no one.

He'll only announce Mike Sherman "has retired" at best.

if he keeps ireland, etc this franchise is dead

Todd Bowles > Philbin

Funny how the younger posters here have more respect for people than the Senior Citizens who are suppose to be setting the example. It is a shame.

More delusions from Dashi. He is one of the younger posters here and how many times has used the terms suck and swallow towards other bloggers? How is that respectful.

Yes, he will have some lame response that completely avoids the point.

drew carey>philbin

No one gets fired, DOLFANS should PETITION the NFL for REMOVAL OF ROSS, on grounds of GROSS NEGLECT.

This guys doesn't have the balls to fire anyone no matter how bad it gets. This is becoming unmistakably evident.

MIT,

Even those Top 4 and didn't start out firing on all cylinders.

There is a Stat that I want everyone to keep an eye on next season. Most passing yards in the first 3 years of their career. Marino is number 1 with 11,000 something followed by Cam and Andy Dalton. I believe T-Hill will be joining that elite club next year.

I kind of like the Bill O'Brien hiring. He's very respected and intelligent.

The more I consider it, the more disappointing the entire 2013 season was. A near disaster from the FA LB signings to the very subpar draft (what else is new) to the results on the field.

The team will probably not make any real changes. And 2014 will be more of the same, perhaps a replay of sorts of Sparano's last year.

Philbin is a loyal/honorable/professional guy and gotta think he's just taking the high road with his public comments, supporting Sherman, etc-coaching ranks are a fraternity, plenty of long term relationships and coaches need to keep options open so Philbin is likely keeping that in mind....cant hang his OC/friend/mentor out to dry in publc, that would look awful to other coaches across the league who are most certainly watching--but I'd be shocked if Philbin truly thinks Sherman did a good job.....we'll find out.

*Top 4 didn't start

exactly what it would be sigh

benz i wouldnt be shocked, philbin doesnt even know what year it is

My prediction to what will happen today

Ireland-safe
Philbin-safe if he agrees to axe his staff
Coyle-gone
sherman-gone
Turner-gone

Philbin sticking with his no balls or emotion attitude will throw his staff under the bus when it comes down to crunch time. Friendship only goes so far.

Im hoping for a total house cleaning, but this prediction is when i leave my heart at the door and use my head

well sherman and turner are locks to being gone. but not gonna help a thing if the clowns ireland and philbin still here

well sherman and turner are locks to being gone. but not gonna help a thing if the clowns ireland and philbin still here

Agreed dusty

AFter the FINAL 2 GAMES PERFORMANCE. I'm placing RYAN TANNEHILL on VERY HIGH 2014 REGRESSION ALERT.

If this happens, Dolfans win no more than 6 games in 2014. Hopefully we finish 3-12 to 0-16, then pray Famous Jameis Winston declares.

YARDS DON'T MATTER!

STOP cherry picking stats!

25TD's is OK, 17 INTs and another 7 fumbles?

Bottom QBR

W/L Record

I can pick out stats that prove my point also.

Here's the fact. The team, including the QB rolled a fall donut the last 2 weeks against div rivals with the playoffs on the line.

For that alone they should all go

The only problem I have with is that little group who tries and fulfill their social life by coming on here and insulting people because they have no one to socialize with in real life.

Posted by: Dashi | January 02, 2014 at 01:08 PM

Fair enough sir. I have no problem with people stating their opinions. Wish we agreed more but we do agree on one thing. This board should be Fins fans sharing their support AND criticism for a team we all love. Humor should also allowed btw, if it is in good taste.

It often goes way beyond that, and that is when I choose to leave. I have been a fan for over 35 years. Maybe it makes me jaded or bitter, but we share the passion for a storied franchise. I guess I long for that to be restored and just don't see it with who is in charge right now.

Off topic sort of but has anyone thought about the guaranteed contracts given to Elerbe & Wheeler? Isn't Aponte responsible for that?

And why didn't they negotiate with Grimes before now? Don't they know the price goes up NOT down?

dusty.....sometimes its hard to get a read on Philbin (and most HCs) with his predictable bland/neutral comments, and thats fine....but this decision is more transparent IMO, for everybody to see....nowhere to hide, cant be neutral on this--we'll know if Philbin is overmatched as he appears at times, or not....i'm stumped.

regis was never an oc
how does he kno if sherman did a good job
or a bad one?
.
lol

He's just like Sanchez and Farve

So Ross doesn't want to fire Ireland because he'd be going back on his word, what about you going back on your word to the fans when you said you wanted to be a winner. Here's the deal Mr Ross, the NFL is a business and if you don't have the cajones to make the hard decisions then hire someone who does!!!
The Dolphins are a laughing stock, around league circles we consistently hear how people can't believe how Ireland still has a job?
His latest draft class was a non impact class, his failure to improve the line, his changing of the LBs, these are reasons alone for his dismissal without the fact that after 6 yrs we are still irrelevant.
As for Philbin, I was for firing or keeping him as long his co ordinators went however the more I read and hear, he has to go as much as if not more than Ireland. What does he bring to the table seriously, and now this blind loyalty and stubbornness that Sherman is an excellent coach and will not be fired makes Ross's decision easy, fine you won't fire him then you're fired too.

More than ever I think they need to clean house.
New GM, new HC, most people from what we hear see Tannehill has talent, they will bring another QB in of course, let them compete best man wins, simple as.
The talent is on this team but it is being used woefully, good coaching and oline upgrades make this team a challenger once again.

Philbin is right about one thing, the Dolphins are close, he is not!
Mr Ross please clean house!!! Abide by your word to the fans!

Again, repeating the same 5 lame comments from last year and the year before that. Good thing you don't post "under the current name you are using til you change it because your hypocrisy has been exposed".

Sad really, being stuck on pause repeating the same thing over and OVER, Decade after Decades. Complaining and Whining about the Dolphins when you sir are the personification of the same thing you cry about.

how in the world did ross ever make money at anything? very strange

I'M VERY GLAD THE JETS WON. THEY SHOWED UP ALL PUMPED
UP TO PLAY FOR THEIR COACH & SAVE HIS JOB, WHICH THEY
DID. THEY LOVE PLAYING FOR REX HE'S IS A GREAT DEFEN
SIVE COACH & A FIERY GUY. PHILBIN IS A GREAT COMPASSI
ONATE HUMAN BEING, BUT NOT A GOOD HEAD COACH. HE'S VE
RY PASSIVE & COMPOSED, & SADLY HIS TEAM IS THE SAME
WAY. STARTING WITH THE QB. HE NEVER GET PISSED WITH
DROPPED PASSES, HE NEVER GETS IN ANYONE FACE WHEN THEY
SCREW UP, HE'S NOT A LEADER (MARINO,RIVERS, BRADY).
COYLE, SHERMAN, TURNER ETC. THEY'RE ALL INEPTS. THE DE
FENSE,OFFENSE, OL,RUNNING GAMES ETC. WERE ALL VERY BAD.
SO, WHO THE HELL WANTS THEM BACK.I'M JUST VENTING, WE
ALL KNOW VERY WELL NOTHING ID GOING TO CHANGE.SORRY I
WILL TAKE A SABBATICAL FROM THE DOLPHINS, I'LL BE FO-
LLOWING THE BRONCOS, PATS, JETS. EVEN THE BILLS. NO MO
RE FINS FOR ME UNLESS?????????.

Hes' not listening Husketeer. Trust me, he's not listening.

We need a new GM, and that GM needs to bring in new coaches.

Anything less will be less...and a waste of another season.

Between losing to the Bucs (who have alread replaced their coaching staff), the Martin/Incognito fiasco, and the season-ending meltdown, I see no reason to keep anyone on the staff...maybe the equipment dude. I think he did a fine job.

If it's true that Philbin is unwilling to replace his coordinators then he should join them in the soup line, seeya.

Those last 2 losses were inexcusable.

And now, I will go do something meaningful and productive.

If Sherman and Coyle are gone and Philbin stays,(F""K), then does Philbin appoint new co-ordinators ?

If he does then this franchise is going down the toilet bowl even further.

The Sherman Coyle hirings give him not right to choose new staff. If its dowm to the new GM, then he'd better work fast as coaches are being signed quickly.

My guess is that Ross announces Jeff Ireland gone and introduces a new GM fairly soon after that.

The new GM will decide on who stays and goes, leaving Ross to stand by and see if the new GM will be better than Ireland. Not too difficult when we haven't had 1 winning season in 5 years and have 2 probowlers from 50 Ireland draft picks. Not including alternates ok .

how in the world did ross ever make money at anything? very strange

Posted by: dusty bottoms | January 02, 2014 at 01:27 PM

Dusty Bottom you're smart man. You know that Ross always had a HR Department to do his dirty work for him. Ross des not have the spine to fire anyone himself.

I know Vegas, makes me sick to my stomach!

marco if ross hires a new gm and gives him power over coaching staff, im in heaven

Tannehill had a knee injury his last two games and his #1 receiver went down early in the last game.

Geno beat us up and nailed Ellerbe, guess he has his way with all the b1tches.

Ross probably wants to fire everyone. Just doesn't have the guts to fire anyone.

That photo of Ross would make vomit want to vomit.

yes sam but hes not firing anyone, use his hr team to fire them, lol careless who does it

Geno beat us up and nailed Ellerbe, guess he has his way with all the b1tches.

Zing. lmao.

c wake just came out of stadium, talked to soemone and went back inside

Posted by: dusty bottoms | January 02, 2014 at 01:31 PM

Thats how its supposed to work. The last thing we need is Philbin picking new old friends to come over and run this team further into the ground.

Most GM's will want there own guys, thats for sure. If Philbin is left to pick again, why should we believe he has improved his choices ? He thinks Sherman is 'Excellent', so that means 27th in offense in 2014 from his new guy will be, 'Excellent', why is Ross confused again ?

I'd love to outside the building, playing The Who number, 'Won't Get Fooled Again', though it would be lost on Ross, he is more a Barry Manilow fan I hear.

Headless horseman hates people who refer to themselves in the 3rd person. Headless horseman wants Dashi to know this. Headless horseman made sure Jimmy had an accident when Jimmy kept referring to Jimmy.

Daashi, of course those top 4 didn't. If some of these people making this rash judgements were packer fans they would've crapped all over teh Rodgers decision because he sat for four years. heck - they call Jordan a bust because he not starting year one.

But also QB is not like any of the other positions. QBs are not born, they evolve. You hope they show you enough early on to give you the chance to have them evolve and I think Tannehill has. heck even if he improves by 105 next year he puts up 4,500 yards and 28 tds. Guess that is still not enough for some people.IN fact I don't even think he needs to get that much better to be entrenched. he just needs to get better regarding his turnovers which he was excellent at doing in the 2nd half of the year.

And why didn't they negotiate with Grimes before now? Don't they know the price goes up NOT down?

Posted by: cocoajoe | January 02, 2014 at 01:22 PM

Good question. I would have nailed him down before the season ended myself. But that seems to be Ireland's MO (wait until the last moment before re-signing talent). Or maybe Ross said, "don't do anything for next year because you may be out of a job." Anyway, I'm not sure it matters, everyone knows Grimes will be a Top 5 CB salary-wise. It's just a matter of when (they have until FA starts in March). Probably gets done once "The Decision" is made today, I give the timetable by SuperBowl.

i know this marco, but we are dolphin fans. we dont usually get that

If he doesn't make changes then it's not about winning games and caring about the fan's !! no playoff's in years then he will be like Jerry Jones a Joke!!

I was an Ireland backer but I'm done with that. I think the LB change this year was the last straw. So I propose we clean house totally including the expression-less head coach and bring in Jason Taylor as GM, the way the Ravens gave Ozzie Newsome a chance and then have patience and let him grow into it. I think Jason will be good for the job.

Then bring back Grimes with 4 years, Starks with 3 yrs. Clemmons with 4, Nolan Carroll who made progress this year with 4 and continue working with John Jerry. Sign Branden Albert LT off Kansas City who is still young. Continue developing AJ Francis at DT.

I don't know what happened to Reshad Jones this year if he was playing out of position or what but we could sign Safety TJ Ward from Cleveland to replace him. Then draft OL, DT and LB this year.

I like Josh McDaniels for Head coach but we have to move fast on him.

PHILBIN EXTENDED, IRELAND SAFE, SHERMAN RETIRED

The new OC will have Tanne to scapegoat so the beat goes on...

turner just walked into stadium, love this stuff

jason taylor as gm is a horrible idea

josh mcdaniels?? im guessing your entire post was sarcasm

Posted by: dusty bottoms | January 02, 2014 at 01:40 PM

that's true. We are the abused children of Ross and Ireland, with no help from the outside world. We wait in our under-ground bunkers awaiting rescue from this life of hell.
