« The complex dynamic of Philbin firing assistants | Main | Judgment day 1 over: Stephen Ross departs »

Stephen Ross at Dolphins camp today

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross arrived at the training facility Thursday morning via his helicopter and it is expected whatever decisions he mulled and pondered about the hiring and firing of assistants and personnel people the last few days will be made today.

As you read here, the Dolphins coaching staff is on the line and while Ross wants change, coach Joe Philbin is resisting that change.

The fate of GM Jeff Ireland is also at stake today. I reported a month ago that Ireland had been told he was safe. Much has changed since then. But I'm told the club owner has been struggling with this issue because he likes Ireland and doesn't want to go back on his word.

We'll see.

Vegas and everyone else,

I am not against throwing jokes at people. I just don't like to here the same lame joke or Insult over and over. It would be hypocritical of Dashi to say I hate all Jokes.

Everyone here knows the same 5 Dashi jokes.

If Dashi takes the time out to come up with new jokes, why can't people do the same. Some posters here do come up with new material, not the trolls.

But again that same little group that repeats the same 5 jokes. Repeat the same 5 comments about the team.

New year New Jokes. I know to some that might not mean nothing because they want to repeat the same thing again and again. But seriously how limited is your imagination to repeat the same thing over and over and actually think it is as funny as when you first said it.

NEW RULE!!

You should have more jokes than names. Cause I've seen the same joke being used by like 20 different names when at most only 12 people are in this blog.

Also, people are asking why Coyle's name isn't mentioned more (as being on the hot seat). One, I think it is behind-the-scenes (or should be). But two, the ONE saving stat for him is points allowed. Miami was 8th. Folks, THAT'S why we were 8-8 (and not 7-9 or worse). NOT Tannehill, NOT the offense, the DEFENSE kept us in games that we could come back and win in the end.

Who cares what happens between the 20's? It's about points, and you need to put up more points than the other guy. Coyle's defense did their part (hard to get much better on that stat), while the HC/OC's vaunted offense was awful (in scoring).

Another year where the supposed strength of the HC is the weakest link on the team.

If he does not clean house then I am out as a Season Ticket holder, no more chances...

Dashi,

give us a joke then !

hopefully more follow storm, id try and have that stadium empty at all cost. dont buy a thing of theres

Not Jeff Ireland's fault that Tannehill missed wide open Wallace all year. Not Ireland's fault that Rishard Matthews dropped that sure touchdown. Jeff Ireland is not the one who called for a pass play when we just had to run out the clock vs. Buffalo. The players choked. The coaches are inept. HartlineFan mentioned www.DolphinsTruth.com, and it's pretty darn good analysis.

Dolfan29,

I am glad that you have finally come around on Ireland. I agree with your prediction:

Ireland- safe
Philbin- safe if he axes his staff.
Coyle- gone
Sherman- gone
Turner- gone

This team was 8-6 and poised to make the playoffs with Ireland's players and then came the collapse. The right players were put on the field to make the playoffs but the coaching staff was not able to put the players in the right position to succeed and/or motivate them to beat the lowly Bills and Jets.

OPEN MEMO to Mr Ross:

Please, please read this. I just read the bio for Offensive Line Coach Turner, QB Coach Zac Taylor, and assistant QB Coach Ben Johnson.

After reading the fact that NONE of them had ANY previous NFL experience, and that ALL of them are only in your employ because of nepotism on the part of Coaches Philbin and Sherman, it is easy to reach the conclusion that your Head Coach and his "mentor", Coach Sherman, are totally incapable of hiring competent, experienced coaches to help instruct and improve the two biggest issues on the Dolphins, viz Quarterback and O-Line.

Any fan who reads this information, available on the official Dolphin website, would instantly understand why our O-Line has floundered in mediocrity all season, and why our Quarterback is being hamstrung by lack of direction and instruction.

Just the fact that these individuals are the hires of your Head Coach and OC should be enough to determine the fate of the Head Coach and the OC. They are incapable of accessing what is needed to lead your team where you, sir, want it to go.

You spent $200 million dollars in off-season hires, and your GM, Jeff Ireland allowed the HC and OC to sway the coach selection process through favoritism, instead of sound judgment. Mr. Ireland put your players in the hands of the incompetent and inexperienced.

I challenge, as owner, to read these bios. If you already have, please read them with greater scrutiny this time. After doing so, I'm certain your decision regarding the future of your Dolphin franchise will be much easier. No one will blame you for taking your flock away from blind shepherds.

Thank you very much for your attention.

dashi, what do u get when u cross a Mexican with an octopus?

Marc, yards don't matter? On what planet? All offensive stats are measured in yards and Tds.

Off topic sort of but has anyone thought about the guaranteed contracts given to Elerbe & Wheeler? Isn't Aponte responsible for that?

And why didn't they negotiate with Grimes before now? Don't they know the price goes up NOT down?

Posted by: cocoajoe | January 02, 2014 at 01:22 PM

Designating Wheeler as a June 1st Cut, he can be cut with no cap penalty. Cut him prior & he'll count $4.2 mil against the cap. Ellerbe would count $25k against the cap as a june 1st designation or $4.175 hit if cut now.

The contracts were written beautifully to be able to get away from them now with no penalty. Wheeler is one we should look to get away from NOW. Ellerbe too but, why create more holes than necessary.

In Wheelers case, by cutting him, the D becomes better.

sherman , ireland hired and signed all those problems

Time to clean HOUSE!!!
What are they waiting for. Grow some balzzz and make the changes thatmeed to be made.

He couldn't even fire Sparano in 2010. That's why he went behind his back the botched hirings and make the franchise look run by fools.

I guess Ross hoped if Harbaugh had signed, Sparano would "figure it out" and just resign. Ross is to spineless to fire anyone not mopping floors at Davie.

Posted by: Sam I Am | January 02, 2014 at 01:08 PM

Don't forget the fiasco after the Sparano firing were he actually goes back to his Office and calls Assistant Coach Bowles to inform him he was now the Interim H.C.

I NEVER forgot that! Had to be one of the weirdest set of events I've ever seen after a firing were it took a week for him to pack his things and go! I wondered how spineless Ross & Ireland were after that point given Ireland is the one with the Davie office down the hall that didn't tell him to pack his things and take a hike while invalidating his card keys.

Can you imagine being fired from your job while personally ascending your replacement all the while keeping your access to your Office and the entire Company? I've seen folks fired in my line of work plenty and the best you do is an envelope with s severance while being shown the street!

Reading comments on this blog is hilarious. Everyone has their opinion and of course NO ONE thinks they are wrong. I have even read one defending Nolan Carrol who absolutely stinks.

So, 11am arrival. Couple hours to hear out Ireland/Philbin (wonder if that happens together or one-on-one). Then probably some alone time (or with confidants) to make a final decision. Then another meeting to let the affected parties know the decision. THEN it gets announced to the media.

This probably doesn't get reported until this evening sometime (there's a blizzard up North so maybe not even until tomorrow, Ross is probably here overnight).

The right players were put on the field to make the playoffs but the coaching staff was not able to put the players in the right position to succeed and/or motivate them to beat the lowly Bills and Jets.

Posted by: Orlando Dolphan | January 02, 2014 at 01:49 PM

Orlando- In all fairness, it was a little of both- actually a lot of both. Sure the players didn;t make the plays when they needed to. We also didn't have enough good players on the field to make the plays that counted. THAT'S ON IRLEAND!

What are our other options? that s what I think Ross is having a prblem with. The team becamse a circus to the media, so who wants to come here?

What is Pioli has no interest. What if Aponte is the only otion to fill Ireland. Then they hire a bad player personell person?

I wanted a house cleaning also, but when I think about it, There are worse options than Philbin. Ireland has been VERY su-par, but we are still finishing better than abouthalf the league, so what if we get one of those guys to replace Ireland?

Like I sid I am not disagreeing we need to clean house, That might be the best move, IF capable replacements who can be better are out there, and want to come to Miami.

Funny how the younger posters here have more respect for people than the Senior Citizens who are suppose to be setting the example. It is a shame.

dashiBoy the kiddie blogger respectful?

Let's not kid ourselves now.

Dashi, just stfu & stop coming here. All you do is whine! You yearn for acceptance but, have to settle for ridicule.

Being an illegal immigrant may get you residence status, food tamps & a divers license. But, on a blog it gets you diddly.

Go back to Tijuana!

My prediction:

2014 - letdown
2015 - letdown
2016 - letdown

Let's see who's more right.

DC, bullshite - that defense should've been much better - much . Are you aprt of the yards don't matter club too? Our defense was awful considering the talent money and picks spent.

sorry SUB-PAR my keyboard is SUB-PAR... lol

You know who I liked that is gone now? Bowles? Thanks another brilliant move Mr. Ross

the defense was awful also.

2 many 3+outs from tchoke
the d gets spent

Sherman is gone, but would also like to see Coyle gone. Try to bring in Chad Pennington as QB coach and groom him for OC.

Like I sid I am not disagreeing we need to clean house, That might be the best move, IF capable replacements who can be better are out there, and want to come to Miami.

Posted by: Poizen | January 02, 2014 at 01:54 PM

Only one way to find our Poizen. Ross just needs the nads to do something it because finishing better than about half the league buys you a cup of coffee and a sandwich. That's not the goal

coyle sucks big balls, but i bet he stays unless we can get ross to fire philbin also

MIT,

Points matter more than yards, they equate to wins. Our offense couldn't score points all year. In the last 10 games we failed to score in the 4th quarter in 9 of those, thats as bad as it get around here.

Look Im on Philbin for the moment and his firing. Thill will be here, but can you at least concede we need to get serious about a QB that can throw the dall deep with accuracy ?

My guess is that the OL line coach takes the fall...

Has the NFL report on the team been delivered to Ross?

That actually may impact his decision.

Despite the last two games... I still see an upside to T-hill... I like his attitude... he just needs better mentoring, coaching and an O-line. Play calling that leverages his strengths would help too.

Give him one more year...

Or even the ball deep. Dalls is the QB for the Bengals.

I am glad that you have finally come around on Ireland. I agree with your prediction:

Ireland- safe
Philbin- safe if he axes his staff.

Orlando

Ive not come around on Ireland. I made a prediction what i think Ross will do. Not should do. If you read my entire post i said this prediction was made with my head. My head tells me Ross wont do what's right and clean house.

My belief is Ross cant make the tough decisions and thus Ireland will stick with the team and we will continue to go 7-9 or 8-8 and draft injured project type guys when other positions of need require attention.

Im not an Ireland backer nor will i ever be. Hes shown me enough to know this team will never be anything more than 500 or worse. 6 yrs to get it done and we get worse or stay the same

agree on thill, kid has big potential. most casual fans dont realize thill played those last 2 games on one knee

Tvegas,

The team had good enough players to beat the Pats, Chargers, Colts, Bengals, and Steelers. They also lost to the Panthers and Ravens on the last drive of the game. That is wins against 4 of the 6 playoff teams and another one against a playoff contender (Steelers). The team was 8-6 and the favorites to make the playoffs at that point as they were playing 2 garbage teams to end the season.

The games against the Bills and Jets were not even competitive. What happened to that team that was so competitivie against the aforementioned opponents. They collapsed and did not show up at the end of the season. Either the players were not motivated, the game plan was bad, or the coaches did not make the right adjustments. Anyway you look at it, this was on the coaches.

We have some real issues that need to be addressed and sometimes that means...new management is needed.

I will lay each one out...

The line is bad. This is not news, but clearly the GM and coach (and the rest of the cosmos) knew this was a potential issue before the season and they failed to fix it. That is really bad. Their really is no way to sugarcoat it. We signed some weapons to help score points, but failed to realize this does not work without a functioning line. I am sorry but that is not acceptable. This shows poor thinking skills related to building a winning football team. Not acceptable. Blame All Around.

To make matters worse our coaches failed throughout the season to recognize this weakness and do anything about it. Sure it was a bad situation, but a coaches job is to put their team in the best position to win, based on their specific circumstances. What would happen with the Pats if they had a bad line. You can bet your A^% that they would have a heavy dose of rolled pockets, bootlegs, misdirections, draws and screens!!!! Where was that? Our game planning was embarrassing. No other way to say it.

Lastly, the defense. This was not championship caliber, but it was decent and certainly good enough. I think all that happened here is that Ireland missed. He wanted younger and faster LB and they could not stop the run. This was offset to some degree by signing Grimes, a total stud.

If I was Ross my real concern is that his Coach and GM just showed poor football strategic thinking skills and I don't know how this is corrected.

Posted by: DC Dolfan | January 02, 2014 at 01:48 PM

This is completely misguided. When the D can't get off the field & the opposing team is having a field day between the 20's the following happens:

It demoralizes the team!

Offense can't get into a rhythm because they aren't on the field much & when they are feel like they have to do more because they don't know how long it'll be before they get the ball back.

Defense gets tired & starts giving up td's late in games instead of fg's they gave up earlier in games

On critical drives where the D must get a stop to get the ball back for their Offense, the D is stuck on the field soaking up the clock, providing less opportunity for the offense.

If the D is on the field more than the O, you can expect the O to not score as many points. If you limit the amount time or possessions, expect the amount of pts. scored to follow suit.

How can you defend a D that allowed the Jets & Bills to absolutely dominate us the last 2 games.

The BILLS! With a Practice Squad QB, reserve WR's moved the ball on us AT WILL. 19 pts. only you say? Being dominated, in spite of points, is no silver lining.

DC,

Coyle is the problem. I would say we didn't give up a lot of points because our players didn't quit this year in the red zone like years past.

But Coyle has said his defense uses many formations. They are not a 4-3 or 3-4 and that they don't play cover 2 all the time. When this defense is always in a 4-3 and Clemons or R.Jones never creep up to the line they are both always in cover 2.

Now our pass defense has greatly improved. But the rest of the defense hasn't. Plus he cost us a couple games playing prevent defense at the end of halfs and games.

On Sherman. Sherman has never denied what he runs. The only problem is we don't have the linemen to run this system how it is suppose to be ran.

But most fans here said before the season the O-line isn't a priority that you can win without an O-line. That resigning Jake wasn't a priority.

I wouldn't mind seeing what Josh McDaniels can do with this offense.

"In the last 10 games we failed to score in the 4th quarter in 9 of those"

Stat of the year for Fins.

REX HAS A TATOO OF GENO'S PENIS

ur insane on josh mcdaniels, guy is a joke. id love to have jay gruden though

Remember all those coaches on Harknocks laughing at Roberto Wallace, calling him ankle weights etc, it showed how little class they have as human beings.

Maybe spending more time developing players and working on a system that scores points would have been a better strategy and use of their time than calling players names ?

Orlando

Yes those last two games were on the coaches, but the entire season from the draft to bullygate to free agents picked to play on this roster. The GM controls the draft and free agency. If the coaches are to blame which i agree they are for not motivating the players and getting them ready to play then shouldnt ireland take heat for ellerbe and wheeler as well as our non existant draft class.

This is why ive been saying since the jets game and after the buffalo game that an entire house cleaning is needed. Both coaches and GM. Hell i'd even fire the concession guys and grounds keepers if it meant changing team culture

ur insane on josh mcdaniels, guy is a joke. id love to have jay gruden though

Posted by: dusty bottoms | January 02, 2014 at 02:06 PM

This coming from the same guy who said the Ravens were loaded.

lol...Jay Gruden? Why not Dave or Mike Shula then?

Jay Gruden....I'm pissing myself.

Just remember. Ireland traded up for Daniel Thomas!

The reason Ross does not want to fire Ireland is because he idiotically signed him to an extension before seeing how the season panned out and does not want to eat the last year of the contract, and have to pay 2 GMs at once.
I think it's all about money with him.

Orlando-
The coaches don't get a pass. I agree. Our adjustments and game planning were often subpar. But don't overrate the team either. 8-8 is just what this team is- average.

The Fins have holes like Swiss cheese. That lies with the GM.

Posted by: wallyfin | January 02, 2014 at 02:05 PM

I've heard that rumour too.

I have twenty jokes, but they all have the same punchline, so I'll just give you that:

Dashi

Dolphins don't have the right GM or the right HC. I'm mean seriously Mr. Ross if the guy drafting the players isn't succeeding that sets your franchise back not one year but four or five years. Not one rookie with all those draft picks made any sizeable contribution.

Dion Jordon may be a future star but why would you give up a second round pick to move up to get a player that we didn't need? If he had drafted a LT there I wouldn't question it. If you stayed pat and drafted more OT or OG help that would have been okay.

And don't get me started on giving Reshad Jones that huge contract. He's okay but not worth anywhere near what he got. Ellerbe and Wheeler....huge huge diaster at LB this season and we can't dump them because they are owed huge money next season. So defense is probably doomed again next year.

And Philbin wants a team of boy scouts and no team leaders because he wanted them gone. No wonder they can't get fired up for the Bills and Jets. They have been taught to be milk toast or you will be gone. Emotionless coach = emotionless team.

So sick of this crap. If you don't fire Ireland or Philbin you are a clueless billionaire who has no idea how to run a sports franchise.

mike shula, hilarious

Marco, points matter more than yards? then you are saying our defense was a top 10 defense?? I don't know how you could think that.

Ross and Philbin are placing too much of their loyalty to the people they like. There first loyalty should be to the team and fans.

Im not an Ireland backer nor will i ever be. Hes shown me enough to know this team will never be anything more than 500 or worse. 6 yrs to get it done and we get worse or stay the same

Posted by: dolfan29 | January 02, 2014 at 02:03 PM

We said buddy... well said

rumour?? not rumor?

Marco is a Cnaadian ... tell me it's not true... jk

BTW, who cares about the last 2 losses? Everyone knew the team was flawed & were lucky to be where they were.

Look at how the Ravens finished the year. Getting trounced 2 games in a row worse than we did. 100 mil QB.

Look at the Lions. Big time QB, RB, WR....lost 5 outta 6.

Bears, kind of similar falling apart.

In spite of OBVIOUS flaws in personnel & coaching, this team slightly improved & was in contention. It needs better coaching on O & D & better personnel to make the jump.

This is why Coyle, Sherman, Turner & Ireland must go. They are he ones holding the franchise back.

Ireland gave up a 2nd and a 1st to move up to the 3rd pick in the draft... to draft a guy who had 26 tackles this year. 26! If you just stood in one spot every play you'd end up with 26 tackles just from sheer luck.

I believe Ross will come out and say everyone is on Double secret probation. They will be put on notice that if they don't preform well they will be replaced during next season.
