« The complex dynamic of Philbin firing assistants | Main | Judgment day 1 over: Stephen Ross departs »

Stephen Ross at Dolphins camp today

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross arrived at the training facility Thursday morning via his helicopter and it is expected whatever decisions he mulled and pondered about the hiring and firing of assistants and personnel people the last few days will be made today.

As you read here, the Dolphins coaching staff is on the line and while Ross wants change, coach Joe Philbin is resisting that change.

The fate of GM Jeff Ireland is also at stake today. I reported a month ago that Ireland had been told he was safe. Much has changed since then. But I'm told the club owner has been struggling with this issue because he likes Ireland and doesn't want to go back on his word.

We'll see.

agree hydra, which is why I said I wouldnt have traded up for Jordan....but I'm just saying that folks here are acting like "it IS the kids fault"--he didnt have a good year or much of a year at all, and we did have more pressing needs....but plenty of folks here are acting like he's already a bust--agree picking a DE there didnt make sense....but since we did, Jordan as a player has a ton of potential

AGAIN! I provided a link earlier. Wether you chose to use it or not is up to you.

If Wheeler is cut today, he will count $4.2 million against the 2014 cap with 10.6 mil in dead money.

If he is designated as a June 1st cut, he has a $0 cap hit & $6.4m in dead money!

If the last two games are not fireable offenses, what are? Failbin clearly cannot motivate or game plan, and FIRELAND finds more rotten nutz than healthy acorns.

Or maybe they're wrong? Don't think so dude

I hope the Fins hire Mike Shanahan. It was reported he would have preferred Ryan Tannehill over RG3. He would be a good fit and I think RT would blossom under him.

The League will never be completely ready to openly accept Gays in the Locker Room. Everybody says the right thing but they don't want that kind of attention. On Mondays there's a show on Wisconsin Sports radio with Aaron Rodgers and I read an article on the 31st were he spent the entire Hr. dedicated to refuting the allegations he was gay as were reported.

Think about that! He's coming off one of the better finishes your going to see pulling a game out with 30 ticks to go on 4th down (the Bears Safety's should have all been let go after the game but a different story) and he's deflecting questions about his relationship with his live in manager. A weird story but having used that format to address when he initiated the convo tells you about the pressure of being that guy openly in an NFL Locker Room and he's one of the games best!

More importantly Shanahan makes stars out of RB's. Like ALfred MOrris?

Wait, Rogers has a male lover? I mean, live in male roomate?

How was I wrong about Wheeler?

Let me REPEAT myself again.

The Debate was Dansby and Burnett can't be replaced. My point was that they can and they should. Dansby was overpaid and underperforming. Burnett was just poisoned by Dansby's laziness and insubordination.

Dashi was big on Ellerbe. I love the way he plays. Like his hair is on fire. Ellerbe doesn't quit.

Wheeler was just part of a list of LBs I posted that could replace the other 2 clowns.

If you remember CORRECTLY, Dashi wanted Ellerbe and D.Smith from Jax for a year and to draft a LB in the 2nd to develop.

But Sure, Whatever you say buddy.

http://overthecap.com/calculator/?Team=Dolphins

Cocoaslow, what are you not grasping?

Spotrac does not factor in June 1st designations. get with the program.

Perhaps you recall when Burnett & Dansby got released, people were wondering how we can sign Wheeler & Ellerbe & absorb the cap hits to Dansby & Burnett.

Siomple answer - June 1st designations.

Having to educate some of you is a chore.

You guys are all like Wheeler. A step behind. I told you all he sucked a couple weeks into it. Now everyone wants him gone, lol

Just like Henne, and soon to be RT you're all just a step slow

Dashi,

I guess my problem with the whole thing is that you and others told everyone on here that Wheeler and Ellerbe would be 'huge upgrades on Dansby and Burnett. They were 'younger, more athletic and would make more impactful plays'. They WEREN'T.

So now just 9 months later everyone wants to get rid of them both. HUH? How does that happen?

I wasn't a fan of the Wheeler signing to start but I was OK with the Ellerbe signing. Not sure it was as necessary as some of you guys (I wanted the money spent on a TE) but whatever. My problem is this team constantly changing things mid-stream. If they decided in March that Ellerbe and Wheeler were the guys then figure it out. Make it work!

Oh Gosh, you're just soooooo smart! Do you want a monument or a medal? Can we call you Craig M too?

Go feed your ego somewhere else, Sally.

Folks here actually arguing Wheeler & Ellerbe were valuable additions? I know Mando's stat service (PFF?) has the incriminating numbers, but I trust my eyes:sub-par thru & thru, p**s poor tacklers, poor coverage. Bad.

Posted by: Dashi | January 02, 2014 at 04:38 PM

You see we do agree I wont argue that post! I've had a bone to pick with Coyle since week-3 Vs. Atl. when I felt he nearly blew the game! I posted it earlier and will repeat if you didn't see it. I would have fired Coyle before anybody today!

All I got out of it is that Philbin is insisting to Ross that Sherman should keep his job.

Let's hope Ross doesn't listen to any last-minute, last-ditch pleas and has his mind made up already and sticks to it.

im gonna puke if irescum isn't fired

Posted by: Jose | January 02, 2014 at 04:45 PM

I could be wrong, of course, but it makes me wonder. At least it would send a clear msg about Ross being willing to take risks.

Posted by: Dashi | January 02, 2014 at 04:49 PM

Excuse me and pls keep being so perfect oh great dashee ;)

Exactly.

Failbin must go too. Milktoast cue card reading wuss.

but plenty of folks here are acting like he's already a bust--agree picking a DE there didnt make sense....but since we did, Jordan as a player has a ton of potential

Posted by: benz | January 02, 2014 at 04:40 PM

I like the idea of taking a potentially disruptive element and adding it to the team as opposed to just adding for positions sake! I liked the boldness of the pick but stated the day after the draft that I wondered were you'd fit the obvious 3/4 SOLB in a 3/4 scheme? Heck you don't have to go 3/4 I think he can play SOLB in the 4/3 just as effectively but again was miffed by the quotes after the pick were it was stated he would be a 4/3 DE essentially making him a one-dimensional player when there is more to his game. He can erase the T.E. or RB coming out of the backfield, he can rush and move along the front-7 to different spots forcing the opposition to blow Time Outs ect... I don't blame the player but the lack of vision by the Coaches and wonder why they signed off on him if they doubted his use a theory based on his use this Yr. by this DC!

Wait, Rogers has a male lover? I mean, live in male roomate?

Posted by: Marc | January 02, 2014 at 04:49 PM

Lived together, wore matching suits to the ESPY's, had Special Tuesday's (Aaron's day off) were they would lounge at home and watch movies together ect.... The male Assistant stated upon being fired that, "All secrets had an exp. date" leading to all the speculation. It looked funny to me and you can look it up given there were a few stories about it on google.

I for one don't give a flying fig if Rogers or anyone else is gay. Y'all don't think there have been and are gay players? Why are you all so obsessed with how someone gets off or finds love? Live & let Live.

Is Home in the meeting with owner Stephen Ross?

I hope so. Finally we can build a team with Home's input and NFL savoy.

I am having dinner with Mr. Charles Morrison tonight. It will be a most enjoyable evening.

Dashi, you said "Over the last 5 years nobody in the AFC East has drafted better, Name 1 team. This team has talent on the roster.)"

-------
The Bills. Spiller is WAY better than anyone on the fins, Kiko Alonzo will be defensive rookie of the year. This 2 alone are kore true IMPACT players than Ireland has drafted the past 4 years. The Fins "starters" (save Pouncey, maybe Jones, and Clay) drafted by Ireland wouldn't be starting for any of the playoff teams. They start for the Fins as they are the best of a lousy bunch.

I can't imagine anyone under the age of 50 caring a bit if Aaron Rogers or anyone else is gay. The people still fixated on that stuff are either the elderly or simply homophobic morons at this point. Most of the rest of us care much more about tings that are actually important. And I will certainly support any player with the courage to 'come out' publically.

If there are no dismissals coming then I look forward to seeing the Bills, Browns, and TB leap frogging over the Fins next year. Thanks, Ross.

Miami Dolphin fan chairman = Home.

She's up to her usual trick of acting like someone's talking good about her in a post THEN she posts under the name Home and acts like it was someone who made the original post.

to Dashi at 11.59 Am
i like your post because you are optimistic about this team. IN this blog we can find frustrated finfans who just want a winning season. the trolls come and begin to feed off the frustration and according to there logic if it does not work out in the first 2 years(philbin and staff) then get rid of them. that will never work
There has been improvement its been slight but improvement none of the less.

The only part i would disagree with you is lamar miller the reason is because he may average 4 ypc, but shrivels in third down conversion this is I think the dolphins should find a stud runningback in free agency (to i hear ben Tate?) he could split snaps with lamar which would be a nice one 2 punch!
i have stated before our offensive line must be fixed with a mix of free agents and rookies. i can honeslty see 2 day one starters rookies if the dolphins remain at 19
Zack Martin(OG)
cameron erving (OT)

Kevin Gilbride is retiring as OC for the NY Giants. Why can't Mike Sherman OC just shut up and retire.

Cocoa Slow? How classy. The June 1st designation only lowers cap for that year. The next year, that prorated money counts against the cap. So, in other words, pay now or pay later. Got it?

Home has just finally convinced Ross to trade Tannehill for a 5th round pick to the Jags.
Now the Jags truly do have Hennehill.

It took Home two yrs since the draft but he did it.
Home was right all along on Tannefail.

A WR posing as a QB that missed Wallace for 12 wide open TDs and single handily cost the Dolphins the Play Offs.

One person, Tannefail cost the Dolphins 3-4 wins himself by being so inaccurate on the deep ball. awful.

If every one else stayed and Pat Devlin or Moor started Ross andd the Dolphins would have clinched the Playoffs prior to the Bills and Jets - Tannehill losses.

Miami Dolphin fan Chairman,

What you just posted is the absolute truth. It's so obvious that I'm shocked that the brain trust has not figured this out. Perhaps because they would all be admitting to a huge mistake....

Home had the Miami Dolphins 2012 Draft rated as a a "d"
for Jeff Ireland & the Dolphins

The grade was posted and Home stoo alone on these three picks being awful

Esp Tannefail @#8 when Moore was better gamer and much better deep ball passer
could have started Moore and drafted Kuechly who went next pick to the Panthers for 12.4 million- 4 yrs
Ellerbee and Wheeler cost 61 million in contracts

next
Home said Martin was too weak and a liability

and finally
Egnew was a bust

so there u go

Home was dead on

total 1,2,3 2012 draft busts for Ireland

i have stated before our offensive line must be fixed with a mix of free agents and rookies. i can honeslty see 2 day one starters rookies if the dolphins remain at 19
Zack Martin(OG)

Alabama's LT Kaoundjio will come out and fall a little bit in Rd-1 but saw him Vs. the Semi-Pro SEC Speed rushing DE/OLB's and this is your real deal LT that might just be there at 19. I saw Irving plenty and Vs. UM we had a Fr. DE running circles around him when Miami had the game close in the 1st half. The Canes fell behind and then flooded the sec. with 7 DB's but early Irving had trouble while the Bama kid was crazy good Vs. Auburn, LSU kids. He slides a little because of only one Yr. starting next to his Bro at LG but these 2 are maulers, Flucker who played very well for S.D. is inferior in talent. It could be academic if he rips it up at the Combine then I would hope Mich's Taylor Lewan fell to us in a deep group of Tackles in this draft.

Why hasn't Ireland been fired?

"im gonna puke if irescum isn't fired"
---------------------------------

Might as well start drinking some tequila and have fun before the puking because I doubt he's going to lose his job. Ross has no idea what he's doing, and in his mind Ireland has been doing a fine job up until the final two losses.

You don't give a guy an extension, tell him he's safe after a calamitous personnel issue midseason, and then suddenly change your mind. Ireland would have been on the chopping block with just about any other owner after a long series of terrible choices and losing seasons, but here, losing is just a good reason to continue with the status quo.

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL ROSS SELLS THE TEAM! WE ARE SICK OF LOSING!

Nice job as usghe, "Home"

Imawriter,

The Bills and the Jets have changed GMs in the last 5 years.

Spiller and who else? Are you saying that Spiller is a better Pro than Long or Pouncey? I've said before K.Alonso is not my cup of tea. He is the dirtiest player in the division. And not just because he injured the Browns QB after the guy was out of bounds.

Is Home back? cool!

Winning is not a requirement for a MORON Ross GM.

One can argue about whether or not to keep Ireland. Reality is that the Dolphins talent level has improved compared to where it was when he came in and he has brought in the kind of talent Parcels wanted (unfortunately an outdated vision) and now the kind Philbin wants but the rookies have under-performed (something likely a coaching flaw not their actual talent).

I do not think there is any reason to keep Philbin. Philbin has not shown any evidence of the kind of excellence you expect from a great head coach. Every HC is different in their strength but it is hard to see any strength in Philbin. A weak man who ejected his Leadership Council players and other good players (Long, Dansby, Bush, Marshall) because they talked back he is the opposite of inspirational, the opposite of a Shula or a Ditka or a Lombardi. Consistently out coached in the second half he has no tactical brilliance (unlike a Belichick). Plain vanilla and predictable in his offense and defense he is the opposite of innovative (like a Walsh or a Chip Kelly). With poor technique, missed passes, missed tackles, missed assignments he is obviously not a great teacher (like a Chuck Noll). Ross can keep him for a decade and he will still not produce a great team.

Tannehill is definitely a keeper. We do not know his upside max. Give him an OL and a running game and see what he can do. But in the background - with one of our top 3 draft picks - we should pick up a talented young QB to groom as a backup. Whether Tannehill becomes excellent and the backup becomes his Don Strock or whether the backup matures and becomes a Marino to Tannehill's Woodley nobody knows. But it makes sense to have some young talent behind him.

The list of misses are to many to count. Passing on Calais Campbell in 08 while taking Merling is one I never lived down! In need of pass rushers and LB's in 09 we passed on a couple of USC kids in Clay Matthews and Rey Maualuga in 2010 it was passing again on a Hometown kid in Jimmy Graham while taking John Jerry who Sparano reportedly loved. In 2010 it was passing on JPP, Earl Thomas and Dez while trading down for Odrick and Misi ect..... Ireland has more lives than a cat (and somewhere a hidden bounty of naked Ross pics)

FIRE IRELAND, SHERMAN & PHILBIN

I feel sorry for any ticketholders of this pathetic franchise.

Craig,

You know I wasn't a Wheeler Fan. I was a huge Ellerbe fan. Still am.

But compare last season Dansby and Burnett with this season Ellerbe and Wheeler. About the same production half the price.

We did get a TE, Keller, they just injured him in Preseason. Keller,Clay, and the group of WRs would've been a nasty passing game.

Now me and you were the only ones telling everyone RESIGN JAKE. BUT NOW Everyone has realized the importance of a Good line.

Jan 27th Fireland rally if he's still around

Bills had best draft.in nfl last year

Right on Kevin in pomp. (but fwiw I'm 60+ but try not to act my age!)

This time lag maked me think Ross may be trying to pressure Failbin to fire the assistants. If Sherman had any self-respect he'd fall on his sword and spare his friend, & us, the agony. I still sense Ross unable to make firm decisions re folks he likes. Nice to a fault for an NFL owner.

Spiller and who else? Are you saying that Spiller is a better Pro than Long or Pouncey? I've said before K.Alonso is not my cup of tea. He is the dirtiest player in the division. And not just because he injured the Browns QB after the guy was out of bounds.

Posted by: Dashi | January 02, 2014 at 06:06 PM

As well as undersized, Zach was short but built tough I want to see Alonzo go a few Yrs. injury free or without those big meats at DT keeping the Guards off him. To me over-sized Safety under-sized MLB.

Nothing will change until the fans boycott. Ross is in a coma.

Hydra,

Dashiki has never said that he is perfect. Just that I am right most of the time(98%).

Well Joe Rose reporting live from Davie and Ireland/Philbin are safe! So far nobody is being fired and apparently Ross has caved!

I still can't believe we lost to penis smith and the jets

So what now another year of the same crap I am so sick of philbin

Why are people using the Jets and Bills as a measuring stick for personnel management? Other than them being in our division, there's nothing we should be comparing because we've all been bad for the better part of the last decade.

What we should be looking at is asking if any team had a GM in place through five years of losing and been able to turn that around with more time? You're going to have some hits and misses with personnel along the way, so pulling out single examples is generally a bad quantitative measure.

When you look at the team put on the field year after year, the Fins are a poorly constructed product time and again. Every year, needs are not adequately addressed, and there's always a hole to plug that ends up breaking the dam.

Beyond that, from what I've seen of Ireland, he doesn't instill a productive football culture. The guy is a dink, a social clod, arrogant, and pompous. I don't believe the players care for him much, and when you create bad blood between management and players you're going to have guys that show up and lack heart on the field. They don't want to play hard for management they dislike.

I believe he is capable of folding... A few cosmetic changes of ACs, some we're improving mumbo jumbo, & the last two games & the Abysmal season long 4th Qtr stags are swept under the rug.

I pictured Green Bay south when he was hired , this is not what we had in mind it's year 3

Ross has flown off in his chopper.

He has given extensions to Philbin, Sherman, Coyle and Jeff Ireland, the only guy to get cut was Brandon Fields.

The reason being, Ross felf Fields didn't fit in with the culture he has built for this team.

The Time is Now. Which begs the question Morrissey asked, 'What time is Now ?'. Joke of an owner and club under his watch.
