Dan Marino out at CBS, Dolphins a possibility?

Remember those rumors and even fan hopes that Dan Marino would somehow swoop in from television land and deliver to the Dolphins organization some leadership and a name that would bring respect again?

Well, you're about to hear more of that now that Marino is out of work. CBS today released a statement saying Marino and Shannon Sharpe are out from their nationally televised NFL Today pregame show while former Chiefs and Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez is in.

So Marino needs a job.

So here come the rumors about the Dolphins.

You'll recall Marino left television briefly in 2004 to join the Dolphins organization. He served as some sort of VP for a few weeks before deciding he wanted to go back to TV.

Well, the Broncos did that idea one better when they hired their former quarterback legend John Elway to be the head of their football operations. Elway learned under then general manager Brian Xanders for a year and then took over full control.

The Broncos were in the Super Bowl a month ago.

That has led Dolphins fans to exclaim, "Why not us?"

Well, aside from the fact Marino has no training in personnel or running a club, until today he had a job that he liked, paid well and required not a ton of effort. That obstacle is now gone.

So will the Dolphins chase Marino? As has been reported here, the club had informal conversations with Marino early in 2013 about joining the team in some capacity. Nothing was consummated because the Marino camp stopped returning the Dolphins phone calls after they were confident the former QB would stay with CBS even after his affair with an intern became public.

But Marino never closed that door permanently. And neither did the Dolphins.

But neither did either party pursue the matter futher.

With the Dolphins under the stink of the NFL harassment scandal, coming off an untidy general manager search, news of dysfunction within the football side of the organization and, oh yeah, that late season collapse that turned an almost certain playoff berth into a major disappointment, perhaps chasing Marino is the thing owner Stephen Ross decides he'd like to do.

One word of caution: Ross has gained a reputation for chasing a lot of folks -- Jim Harbaugh, Jeff Fisher, Peyton Manning, Nick Caserio -- but has landed none of them.

Finally Shannon Sharpe is out. i may understand something now form the halfitme show instead of listening to horseface's massive lips flapping into each other the next three guys on the set.

Marino gone, now the women on the set can uncross their legs.

I can see him coming in this year and learning at Hickey's side but he can never be a real gm. Just not smart enough. but he would be good in attracting talent and providing credibility at least.

Dan The Man!

Love Dan, but he was terrible on CBS. Provided no insight. Shannon Sharpe was even worse.

I dont mind Marino joining he Dolphins, but only if he is truly dedicated to the team and brings something to the table. It would be a great PR move, but would need to have substance

Maybe Dan could give Richie golf lessons on how tp have proper form with his golf club and swing speed to get the ball in the hole. Richie just swings and misses, Dan always gets it in the hole!

Maybe Dan can be the Locker Room Monitor that all NFL teams are going to need thanks to J. Martin.

I'm one of Dan biggest fans, but lets face it babygate was a liitle problem for CBS.

Albert then we would have a Brett Farve like situation on our hands! No lady would be safe from the prowless of Mr. Marino.

dan the putz !

he's the worst
1 of the bunch
on there anyways

Have a better idea. Marino should buy the team.

Ross/Philbin are clueless. Not usually one to say scrap it and start over, but don't think these guys can really improve anything. Both seem extremely out of touch.

Why hasn't Turner been fired yet? OL was terrible, J Martin problem happening in the first place, and his involvement in it. Pathetic.

From the last blog

Dashi, you said the same thing about Grimes I did yesterday. Pay him 4 years 32-36 mil with 16-18 guaranteed.

Also getting Starks/Soliai back at a fairly cheap deal will be good. It will probably end up being Paul.

O-line I'd try to add Albert or Monroe/Veldheer if they are available at left tackle. I'd also try and get one of the Chiefs guards. They can't keep many guys because of cap issues.

I was joking dude.

Miss me yet?

Find out if Dan has a history of texting pics of his putter to women before making any hire...

Tony Sporano must be laughing his ass off as to what is happening here.

Mark In Toronto,

Rumor has it that Dan always cleans his ball's before he puts.

Why not? Might sell some tickets

common sense,

maybe the organization is told to hold off of any firings until the league has decided on what to do first. That's the only thing i can think of and hopefully that is the case....

So was I Brobachev.

Marino could probably land another TV gig but it's not like he needs to work. Not the sharpest tool in the shed but he's a HOF'er. Some network will offer him a gig.

Dolphins ... figurehead, not decision maker but that's just my opinion. This is NOT Marinos Dolphins. If I were Dan I would just say no. Putting your face on the milk carton of incompetence doesn't erase that incompetence, it just makes you look bad. Nothing to do with the "scandal" either. That's NFL CYA PC BS. That will pass when the media tires of it. Strip that away and you're still left with incompetence.

I agree.

That's a good habit, Albert. Shows diligent hygiene

A guy who fathered outside marriage: just what we were missing in our band of turds

Dan might need the Dolphins as much as the Dolphins need him right now.

Sorry to hear Dan lost his CBS gig. Maybe he can do some more acting. Don't think he's an adminstrative type person, or a coach. Fin's need to stay away from PR moves, and focus on winning games. Media should focus on stating facts instead of opinions. Maybe Dan just wants to go golfing, or maybe he wants to get a shuttle orbit around the planet, doubt if he wants a lot of responsibility. Either way, I don't see how he could add much value to the team.

Thos blog post should be titled, "Mario loses CBS job, maybe he wants a hotdog?"

If Marino joins it will be just as a figure head. Having met him several times and have had football discussions with him. I believe he has no interest in a position that requires 12-16 hour days. He wants to enjoy his golf and time away. He does not want to be glued day in and day out to a job, which is what NFL execs do.

I can see Dan in the Booth with Cefalo and Rose, they are all good friends and the telecast might be fun. That would leave Griese out, but frankly Griese has become annoying with his refusal to criticize when criticism is needed.

One could argue that this organization hasn't recovered from the last time that Dan held a position of management.......

What are his qualifications? Loved watching him during his prime, but even then his anger cost him some games...especially the big ones!

I don't see a fit, but then again Ross is a desperate man who will do anything to restore the luster on his failing franchise.

what a joke....Marino hall of fame qb, poor analyst, and most likely would not be the brains of an organization, although he would bring credibility.

Dolphins sooo in need of some real leadership that Ross, Hickey, and Philbin can not do. They also have no leadership on the field as well..........

What a joke!!!!

Marino is a loser and cheater and choker and quitter. Why bring him back when he quit like J Martin?

It is ok to bring D.Marino to the Dolphins organization. He is well known in the NFL and also in other sports, he can give the Miami Dolphins a new image, but as a player evaluator I don't know. If the idea is to name him in the near future the new G.M., I think that would be better for J. Taylor, and Marino the new President of football operation.

Marino got fired lol

Has Philbin been fired yet?

According to the gurus these are the top 60 players in the upcoming draft. So, the Fins should get at least 2 of them. Which two is the question?

Based upon need and draft position I think they only have a shot to land the following "Top Five" positions:

Can't see Marino coming back to the Phins. He couldn't handle it the first time. Except as a PR move, what could he bring to the table? Love the guy, but he isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Mando.....did you just include Caserio in the same sentence as Harbaugh, Fisher and Peyton Manning?--you know, 3 guys that have actually accomplished something?--seriously? And Ross could've had Caserio if he gave him more control....but he didnt want to--agree with that or not, those are 2 totally different things...

Marino flunked his wonderlic test, choked every big game he played, cheated on his wife, and quit the Dolphins FO already. NO THANKS!

I realize this talk is mostly about front-office stuff, but I would have to think Marino could teach Tannehill *something* of value. Give him a sinecure and let him work with Tanny.

Marino cheated on his wife a zillion times.

How is it that Philbin still has a job?

So he nows runs to his wife for support, right?! She should have thrown his stuff out on the front lawn for the humiliation he caused her.

Make no mistake, Philbin is THE problem. The GM can't fire him and unless Ross wants to make Marino 'czar' he can't either.

Anderson - that is genius. I mean the alternative if the continued tutoring of THILL by Sherman's son-in-law. Yeah, I think Marino could teach him a few more things.

Considering the fact that Ross thinks most of the fans are idiots. He will likely offer Dan some type of no show job, same as his committee full of no show names. Anything to attract interest and fans at this point, as The Dolphins are losing fans at a faster clip than any other team in the NFL. The numbers here don't lie...even if Ross is a liar.

Btw, anyone who posts here about Dan's great prospects as an NFL Executive is precisely the type of dunce that Ross has an interest in attracting. Dan Marino is not John Elway. He's Italian, his father was a truck driver, if he couldn't throw a football he'd be driving a truck, Dan Marino is dumb. This is abundantly clear when he speaks and only a dumb person can't clearly see as much.

Leadership ? Dan Marino couldn't lead a football team on the field. His yellow Garo Yepremian tackling efforts after he threw interceptions and his outright refusal to both run the quarterback sneak and keep his weight down...these are hardly characteristics synonymous with a leader.

Let us not forget about his little fling with the fugly intern or his anxiety issues readily apparent on HBO's Inside The NFL. When Dan was acting the fool yet again, Chris Carter's line "Calm down buddy, calm down" was classic.

The first mistake of many that The Dolphins organization made which ultimately led to the team's current laughingstock status was not trading Dan after the 1996 season. Jimmy Johnson wanted to, Huizenga said no, keeping in mind the demographic that will post here today about how great it would be to have Danny Boy back on the payroll.

Dan was a cancer, a part of keeping The Dolphins away from a Super Bowl title for so long. He wasn't good enough as a player, he'd be an absolute slob as an executive.

Marino doesnt have to teach TannePuke to choke. Seems he already knows that well.

Marino's wonderlic test score = 6

Dolphins Over/Under win total for 2014 = 6

Random facts.

1991 AFC Wild Card spot on the line

Jets 17 Dolphins 6

1994 AFC East title on the line.

Jeff George's Colts 10, Marino's Dolphins 6

1997 AFC East Title on the line

Pete Caroll's Patriots 12 Dan Marino's Dolphins 10

8-10 in the playoffs.

Go home Dan, go home.

Bang Claire for a change...she's sick of the pool guy.

JPAO, why draft a blah G and RB who won't change the team when perhaps you can get a special WR/TE/S/LB?

Marino quit worse than J Martin. 10 days in the Dolphin FO.

Marino is soooooooooooo boring on TV, Shannon Sharpe is horrible as well, good job CBS.
Do not bring Marino back here either, we had 17 years of pick sixes and postseason choke jobs, enough is enough.

"I know nuthin".....Joe Philbin.

Where my baby daddy be #13?

Marino, Ingotnito.........see the similiarity? Both end in O

While I'm a Tampa Bay fan on the west coast of Florida, Dan Marino would be your franchise's savior AGAIN, as he as earlier...He may not have been a Joe Montana for reasons perhaps not even his fault, I do know that he is a class act with a lot of talent and Miami definitely would benefit greatly with Marino being back within the franchise! Watch...

Pray for new ownership.
