Dan Marino out at CBS, Dolphins a possibility?

Remember those rumors and even fan hopes that Dan Marino would somehow swoop in from television land and deliver to the Dolphins organization some leadership and a name that would bring respect again?

Well, you're about to hear more of that now that Marino is out of work. CBS today released a statement saying Marino and Shannon Sharpe are out from their nationally televised NFL Today pregame show while former Chiefs and Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez is in.

So Marino needs a job.

So here come the rumors about the Dolphins.

You'll recall Marino left television briefly in 2004 to join the Dolphins organization. He served as some sort of VP for a few weeks before deciding he wanted to go back to TV.

Well, the Broncos did that idea one better when they hired their former quarterback legend John Elway to be the head of their football operations. Elway learned under then general manager Brian Xanders for a year and then took over full control.

The Broncos were in the Super Bowl a month ago.

That has led Dolphins fans to exclaim, "Why not us?"

Well, aside from the fact Marino has no training in personnel or running a club, until today he had a job that he liked, paid well and required not a ton of effort. That obstacle is now gone.

So will the Dolphins chase Marino? As has been reported here, the club had informal conversations with Marino early in 2013 about joining the team in some capacity. Nothing was consummated because the Marino camp stopped returning the Dolphins phone calls after they were confident the former QB would stay with CBS even after his affair with an intern became public.

But Marino never closed that door permanently. And neither did the Dolphins.

But neither did either party pursue the matter futher.

With the Dolphins under the stink of the NFL harassment scandal, coming off an untidy general manager search, news of dysfunction within the football side of the organization and, oh yeah, that late season collapse that turned an almost certain playoff berth into a major disappointment, perhaps chasing Marino is the thing owner Stephen Ross decides he'd like to do.

One word of caution: Ross has gained a reputation for chasing a lot of folks -- Jim Harbaugh, Jeff Fisher, Peyton Manning, Nick Caserio -- but has landed none of them.

Wow , listen to the hate in this room. I wonder what some you brave commenters do for a living. Have you ever had 1 vote for the HOF??? I didn't think so. So easy to hide behind anonymity and "bravely" condemn.
Well officially I crown you all experts and stunning successes in your analytic capabilities. Just write down everything you typed here today, and then write down how accomplished and "great" you are, then review each of these things 5 years from now

Is that Mayock's top 5 at each position? While any top 60 can be argued it seems all the centers I would take off that list. Some of the RB's along with Safety's.

I could also argue that Landry shouldn't be in the top 5. I like his partner at LSU Beckham better.

But it is a half wat decent list for top 5 at each position.

Marino brings his own scandal, but at least that's far enough in the past to not really affect the situation. This team could use his face if nothing else to take away from the current issues - but it still won't change the fact that we have a lame duck for a coach and a GM that was the last choice...

Here is a top 83 list from CBS Sports that isn't too bad. Plus now you can see through 3rd round about what Miami can get.

Love Dan (and am disgusted by some of the comments here from people who have never accomplished anything noteworthy in their entire lives---and never will) but he would bring absolutely NO qualifications as a football executive and there's no compelling reason to think he'd be any good at it.

If he came in, it would be in some kind of meaningless figurehead role and I don't see any point in that.

He'll probably land another TV gig with someone, anyway.

Even CBS is down on the Dolphins!!!

Troy Niklas the tight end from Notre Dame caught my eye as a 2nd or 3rd round prospect who can make plays. He's 6 foot 7.

I'm looking forward to seeing all of the combine numbers in the next few days.

Perfect Timing, Bring him in now so he gets a year under his belt before firing Philbin and Hicky and starting over.

Marco, are you posting today in your push-up bra and lace panties?

Enough celebrities and past legends. The only good thing Elway has done with Denver is get Peyton...That's it. Leave running an NFL team to the people who know what they are doing. I'm sure Ross will reach out to him to try and salvage what little respect we have left.

I've used CBS as a reference the last few years. Find those guys are bang on and they don't make you pay for any analysis like the communists at ESPN.

Pretty F'n sad you 'Miami Dolphin fans' (that's sarcasm to the max) talk $hit about the best Dolphin player of all time.

I don't have any delusions of Marino coming in saving this once proud franchise because he just doesn't have that type of experience. But why do you 'fans' seek to destroy the memory of a once great player?
Even fans of other teams recognize Marino as one of the greats. You? You're just some malcontent(s) who look to run others down to prop up your failed life.

Tell em cocoa.

I think Marino would have value as i said before. he may not be much help running down the capapbilities of a linebacker from Kansas State. But in free agency - bam, who would be better in hosting guys and talking them into signing here? There's tremendous value in that.

Marino = Quitter, Choker, Cheater

Marino and Ireland both fired.

Marino was a big bore on tv.

Yeah, I like CBS, they have a pretty easy site to use and do a half way decent job. I think they start getting in the 200's though and just plop players in there. I'm not sure how thy could honestly rate a 1000 players. I don't blame them. I like Prisco too, he doesn't mince words, tells it like he sees it.

The ceaseless negativity on this blog is a direct result of the lack of self-esteem many of these posters have.

I mean, think about it. These are people who quite literally spend a significant chunk of their "lives" typing away endlessly and obsessively about a meaningless game.

They do nothing of importance. Most probably don't even have meaningful relationships.

So this becomes a conduit for their personal frustrations and inner rage at being a failure in life.

I would like to see Marino become a face of the Dolphins. He should be seen more around the stadium. He was and exciting player to watch despite what some of the trolls on this forum have to say.

Of course we don't expect him to actually run the team. Or maybe he falls right into it and does very well. There are a lot of GM's that can't get a pick right no matter if they pick first, second or third. This team hasn't been doing that well.

Marino doesnt have to teach TannePuke to choke. Seems he already knows that well.

Thats the results of two years of Philbin.

Don't get caught up in the hype, Marino is all Italian, nuff said, this club can go further south than 8-8

Marino, QB coach or consultant. Hell Zach Taylor could be replaced by Ryan Leaf and we see an upgrade.

What a sad day as a dolphin fan. To hear all u so called fan ripping Marino is just embarrassing. For 17 year that man did all he could and do to poor coaching and terrible drafting we failed every year.
I would love ot see him come back in some fashion. President of the team some kind of credibility and just Ross might actually listen to someone of than the idiots he's listening to now.
Regardless of his personal issues you fans are a joke. I keep saying it can't get any worse for us fans then I read this and
I'm disgusted.
I'm sure the jets fan are loving this.
Sad day

Dan Marino = washed up loser

JPAO, why draft a blah G and RB who won't change the team when perhaps you can get a special WR/TE/S/LB?

Posted by: Mark in Toronto | February 18, 2014 at 02:43 PM

Mark - I would be definitely open to finding a true #WR or TE. I definitely don't see him going Safety. Maybe LB if stud falls to him. I just don't see this new GM going that direction in his first draft. These are not considered NEED positions at this time. I see himg going with the glaring needs on OLINE.

By #19 I would expect the following to be off the board, Top 1-2 QB's, Top 1-3 WR's, Top 1-3 OT's, Top 1-3 DT's and Top 1-3 CB's.

So, if the Top G is on the board I could see him taking the safe bet in a NEED position. I think I would rather him take the #1 G than the #4-6 Tackle. I also love Carlos Hyde and would be fine with Hickey selecting the Naples, FL raised RB.

Texas, Yeah, there's not much to differentiate after a while - i stop at about 190 players. more than enough to follow the draft and see if you can see some of the same things as the pros do. It's a fun exercise, one I enjoy much more than fantasy football for example.

Marino Is not the answer, leave him on the golf course getting rid of Philbin and Turner is a great start. Then hire some real football people to run the team.

Bring Dan back as assistant coach with Tebow .
That's a win win situation.

How much ya get paid for all your valuable insight and hours of research and film watching? 8 bucks an hour and a fat wife with 3 kids? how close am I?

Icant understand people wanting more WR's and TE's ? WTF did they watch our o-line play last year, or our backs go down like ballet dancers when touched ?

We have spent so much money signing Wallace, Gibson and Hartline that it for next year. Clay will be looking for more money next year and was the best player on the offense by far last year. We have a QB last struggled last year and has trouble settling in the pocket with the line he had last year. Many of you have been screaming for a RB to give Thill time using the play action and I totally agree.

Carlos Hyde should become the focal point of the offense with the additions of Albert and a decent RG and RT.

No point in having another WR if the QB struggles to stay upright or hit him accurately beyond 15 yards. If Thill is to progress to a top 16 QB then he has to have a better o-line and RB. Then we have to build an amazing defense and see better o-linemen get drafted here.

Hickey has a lot on his plate and his resume doesn't give us much hope or reason to believe that he will be.

Marino is just changing TV programs to "The Biggest Loser" haha

JPAO, I don't think NEED shoudl ever enter to equation in the first or 2nd round of the draft unless two players are so equally rated on your board or you need to draft a qb.

St. Louis will be a prime example of this when they select Clowney - although I think they should select Manziel or whoever the 2nd rated qb is. bradford is very expensive and unreliable as they come. it will be a while until they draft this high again and have a shot at a top qb. They may get stuck in purgatory if they let this go by and then bradford flops again.

I see the draft a little different. i think if it was today - 4 qbs may be in the first 12 picks allowing maybe an ebron or banjamin fall to us. Shouldn;t let this opportunity go by so we can draft the next Vernon Carey.

I meant because of all the wasted time you spend on researching talent is the reason you have a crappy job and you're lucky to have a fat wife that puts up with all that wasted time, thanks

I'd rather have Armando in the Dolphins FO than Dan Marino. At least he has a brain.

Marino never won nuthin!

Bring Marino in as a quarterback coach

Like other posters said, Marino was horrible at CBS. Worse yet, when the Dolphins were attacked by the other hosts he did ZERO to defend us.

Im not sold Marino restores the Phins image. Lurking in the backgrounds of a Marino return will probably be the "wife cheat, illegitimate child" rehashing.

I actually believe the Dolphins "IMAGE" must FIRST BE RESTORE to pave the way for a successful Marino return. Yeah, you can bring him back right now, but, he does ZERO to "restore our image".

Especially being less than 2 season of having his image blasted himself.

Also, if he shows the mental acuity he exhibited at CBS, I'm very skeptical he can build this organization into a winner.

Maybe bring him in as a "qb coach". But I'm sure he has far too much pride and ego to accept such a "lowly position" as that.

Mark, I wish you would write more about scented candles and popular hair products of the 1950's and 60's.

not to worry;ross will form another committee including minority owners, to figure this mess out. we should have some answers/decisions in a few months.

"wife cheat, illegitimate child" would not help the Dolphins image lol

Not saying Dan should be brought back, but for all the "fans" calling him a loser, exactly how many playoff wins do the Dolphins have since he left? A hint, they are far less than he had in nearly the same time as a the qb. The franchise is arguably at its lowest point it could not hurt to bring in the greatest qb in team history in some capacity.

Why in the hell would Dan Marino want to broil in July and August trying to teach some free-agent scrub how to play quarterback?

Are you freaking kidding me? You may as well ask why he doesn't join the Chinese space program or run for the U.S. Senate.

Please join me in the real world, guys.

Posted by: Marco | February 18, 2014 at 03:37 PM

Hey I said it before, where's my kudos Sammy boy ?

Tebow... Ha ha.

That would at least begin to clean up our image. Our 3rd and short situations would be better too. After that well Tebows are is one of the most erratic in the NFL'd history.

Tebow also struggles on the deep ball.... Hmmm where have we seen that before chappies ???

Marino, QB coach or consultant. Hell Zach Taylor could be replaced by Ryan Leaf and we see an upgrade.

Marco, I wasn't here when you posted. I never go back and read all of the posts before making my first post.

I usually read about the last 15 minutes of the current page before before posting. :)

Where is Leaf now ? Last I heard he was incarcerated at Crossroads Correctional Center in Shelby, Montana. Poor guy, not only is he in jail, but in Montana.

At least he is close the the Martin guitar factory and could get his hands on a nice acoustic D28..... Hmmmmm Nice, nice !

NeMo from earlier,

Agreed. Grimes is #1 priority right now and the fins can sign him for a reasonable price. I believe I did get the numbers from you. It sounds like a reasonable price for a top flight CB.

I don't mean sign N.Carroll to a Huge contract. N.Carroll and C.Clemons can both sign team friendly deals. Carroll from $3-$5M a season for 2-3Years. And C.Clemons the same. That way we don't create more holes and have decent starters that already know the system and have chemistry with the defense. N.Carroll could sign to be the #2 CB or Nickel cb if J.Taylor beats him out.

And the way the NFL is going you need at least 4 good CBs on your roster.

The franchise is so far down the toilet that Marino being hired couldn't possibly make things worse.

Also if any of the Thill fans rip on Marino then they are struggling with mental issues.

Posted by: Madea Stone- Private EYE | February 18, 2014 at 03:47 PM

It's called cut & paste you idiot. It takes a second of my time. Another minute (or less) to formulate a thought. I know that is a stretch for you, you double-wide dweller. Do I need to define dweller for you?

Ross couldn't catch a cold if his life depended on it.

I just heard that Philbin will be fired by the end of the week.
