Dolphins committees poorly planned, poorly executed

At the height of the Dolphins scandal involving Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito, owner Stephen Ross announced the formation of two committees to address some of the problem he perceived to exist within his team.

One of those was to meet to set lockerroom standards for Dolphins players. It was supposed to include former Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino, former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Jason Taylor and former NFL coach Tony Dungy.

Well, that committee has no agenda. It has never met. There is no schedule to meet. And sources say it's possible that committee may or may not ever meet.

Members of the committee have not gotten even one phone call relative to information on the committee. They obviously have not been given dates for a first meeting or marching orders on the committee's workload.

In that regard, the follow-up to the committee's work has so far been similar to how it hurriedly came together.

Ross called members to ask (tell them) he wanted them on the committee one day before the committee was announced. Ross personally called at least two members and didn't even talk to them at first, but merely left voicemail messages saying what he planned.

The next evening on Nov. 11, Ross announced the committees and also announced he would meet with Martin. Ross also had not cleared with the NFL he planned such a meeting and upon hearing of the owner's plans, the league promptly steered him away from the meeting with Martin for fear it would interfere with the ongoing investigation.

Ross's meeting with Martin may also never happen.

Grier, did you know that in Canada, one doesn't have to press charges for there to be a criminal investigation?

I think I farted just a tad too loud in the office. Dam, thought I would be able to just squeeze one out.

This is embarassing.

A great QB can make you a perennial playoff team but they rarely win SB's like great defensive teams do.

This has been proven over and over again.

But that goes back to how the team was assembled. You had a bunch of rookies, younger players and FAs. No one with a real sense of going to battle for the guy next to you. You could hear it in some of Wallace's statements, and Clabo too. Not their fault, they just got to the team. But there was no glue. Not one guy to say, this is how we do it here, we're brothers, etc. Pouncey seems like he could be that guy, but he was dealing with his legal issues. Actually, the only guy that COULD do it on offense WAS Incognito. Probably the worst guy to bring everyone together.

Poor job of putting the team together. Not just talent-wise, but personality, culture, all of that.

Grier, did you know that in Canada curling is the national pastime?

Ecstacy is not deteriorates dopamine levels in the body over time. Not what I'd want to be doing if I was already an off-kilter professional football player.

For drugs and most things I believe it is the same in the US Mark. Now with that said what is in text messages may not be enough to warrant an investigation. The law wouldn't find a thing at this point as I am sure he's covered his arse.

As for the NFL and Pouncey the NFL doesn't have to follow the Law, they can do their own investigation into this and fine or even suspend on what they find.

We could be going into next season with FA's and rookies only on the Oline.

DC, probably won't have that until the Qb is ready to take that next step.

had some guys on defense that could have - but were nutted by the Gm playing contract games and the DC playing a puss passive style.

This team when or if it gets it all together under Philbin will be all about the pass and a bend but don't break defense.

Who else but the Qb would be the face of the franchise built like that? Unrealistiv to expect a raw 2nd year qb to be able to shoulder that though. Even the great Andrew Luck has struggled at times and he's the qb prospect of a generation.

Cant win without a QB.

Grier, Richie didn't get away with anything. he paid damages. $200K for rubbing a woman's hoo-ha with a golf club - wow that's STIFF! (tee hee)

Posted by: Mark in Toronto | February 04, 2014 at 01:11 PM

It wasn't 200K but actually 50K and I'm not sure how the legal system works in Canada but here in the U.S. you can be charged with simple battery by just calling a woman a whor-e. All she needs to do is call 911 and the wrong Cop showing up! Trust me here, seen it happen! The story about him verbally and physically assualting the young girl would have landed him in jail if the police had been contacted! You don't consider a guy sticking a golf club threw a Chicks legs a physical assualt? Got a Sister?

The entire account wasn't made public but feel it's pretty safe to say somebody went and talked to her in those few minutes while She was contemplating her next move and talked her out of the call! The Cops in this matter found out about it the same way we did, after the fact and the payment because if any other way he gets an Assault and Battery Charge! After the 97 photo's of a beaten to a pulp Nichole Simpson were splashed everywere the rights of abused woman shot to the for-front in this Country becoming almost air tight (were abuse towards Woman is prosecuted in a Kangaroo fashion!) Were they might be seen as very circumstantial in other instances of Criminal Court!

True Texas, but we were discussing the old golf club against the clitoris move Richie pulled. In Canada, if a cop was summoned and found enough cause there would be a criminal investigation - I believe it's different in the US or at least in a significant portion - your criminal code shifts from state to state - must be very confusing.

When the Martin/Cogs scandal first came public I said I believe the demotion to RT triggered it. Nothing else.

Then the "tricklization" of the news events afters cause many of us, including me, to wade back and forth on the wrong side of the issue. Now, IO return back to my original thought, had nothing to do with Cogs/locker room.

Martin was upset and distraught with his right tackle demotion far more than anything else. The cafeteria incident was the spark that blew the already fully loaded keg of dynamite up.

I am making my delicious Smothered Fiesta Balls for lunch today!

DC - There is an OG in the draft that could be that guy in his rookie year. Mason Walters, if the draft were tomorrow he could be had in the 7th round or as a UDFA. The kid isn't rated as the greatest OG coming out for sure but he works very hard, has all the tools needed and the smarts. He's mean too, not bad teammate mean but hard hitting mean. I believe he'll move up but how high I am not sure of. He's a guy I want to watch and see what happens. BUT his leadership is off the charts. It is rare to say a rook could be the leader of the Oline but that comes naturally for him.

#1 OFFENSE VS #1 DEFENSE HAS HAPPENED 6 TIMES IN SB

#1 Defense is 5-1

Super Bowl 7 also featured the number one offense and defense in the same game.

Both belonged to Miami.

Like wise I always found the timing of his breakdown suspicious (After the MiKinnie trade) and subsequent move back to RT in N.E.! He says that when the players walked away from his in the Cafeteria he lost it and felt isolated?? I think he threw a gigantic hissie fit at probably having new LT MiKinnie amongst those who walked away from him (never touched upon)

If the text messages were the cause then why didn't he have this breakdown at the end of 2012 (during the Off-Season) breaking the story of the abuse in Miami's Locker Room?? I always found it interesting that alot of these text messages were in fact during the 2012 Yr.! Again agree he was looking for an out and wanted to go to Indy (most likely) while squirming his way out of his rookie obligation to the Dolphins. He just never banked on the can of worms he was opening up!

That's right good days, the dolphins also left about 21 points on the table that day, dominated over the hill gang to no end, final should have been something like 31-0.
Mandich catch at the 3 YL still to this day the best catch in a SB ever by a TE.
Rest in peace MadDog.

I wonder why it is still called a locker room issue. To me it seems to be a made up personal issue between 2 ex-friends.

I say made up personal issue because this only became one after Martin blew up and left the team.

The same would apply here, depending on the crime.

I never thought about this portion of it, but glad you brought it up:

"I think he threw a gigantic hissie fit at probably having new LT MiKinnie amongst those who walked away from him (never touched upon)"

The rest of your post, too, is nail meet hammer.

I would think Ted Wells also received these text from Cogs long before it was "leaked" SB week.

The most damaging part of all in this Cogs/Martin whatever it can be called. Has absolutely nothing to do with the Cogs/Martin situation at all. It's what it led to being revealed.

Cogs incident on the golf course with the female Dolphins staffer. This is what "other" NFL gm's will have to look long and hard about in future Cogs NFL employment.

This makes it appears Cogs never learns from past mistakes, instills a certain amount of fear with other gm's, and boldly paints "BUYER BEWARE" square center of Cog's Neanderthal forehead.

Not to say, no gm would sign Cogs, just that a much smaller number would not be scared away.

It's complete no brainer that any team signing Cogs needs to be one of "very strong" veteran locker room. Or Cogs will lead the "inmates to run the asylum".

Yes, obviously the Dolphins OL needs a LOT of help (they were beyond atrocious) but the team is absolutely doing the right thing in moving past both Martin AND Incognito and leaving both far in the rearview mirror.

I don't think immature jackasses help you win many football games unless they're named Lawrence Taylor.

Posted by: SAM I AM | February 04, 2014 at 02:24 PM

Another thing is when discussing Incognito it's imporatant to address the fact were talking about an average player at best! If this were Lawrence Taylor you'd bet teams would sign, in fact, I believe if by some stroke of miracle Aaron Hernandez is aquitted you'll find a group of NFL teams come knocking(maybe an exagration given the amount of negative press and Angel Dust allegations but you get my point) In Cogs your talking about one of the slowest pulling OG's while still in his prime! In todays World he's an average talent with diminished skills, No G.M. in his right mind picks him up unless it's Nov. and all 4 of the teams Guards on the roster go on I.R.

Where do you get your info? Dungy said they wont meet until after the final report comes out. So why is this committee a failure?

"By the way, Dolphins were the topic of discussion for over an hour on sports radio up here. Of course the Martin/Cogs scandal. Though many still haven't learned the true facts (vs. the falsehoods)"

It's absolutely ridiculous that any member of teh media can still be peddling the 'bullying' line. You can be forgiven early on for ignoring what most us us who follow things in S. Florida already knew, but no impartial observer could parse the 1,000-plus texts (as I did today) and conclude anything else other than they were close friends who trashed talked each other as would any two (immature) friends is simply a liar. It's amazing how many times it was JM initiating communication and asking RI to go out and 'smash' girls. As late as early oct, just a few weeks before JM quit, he was hitting RI to go partying. JM is an f'n fraud and anyone in the media who isn't calling him out as one, is a fraud too

Taylor is a great example! It could not have been a secret to the Giants or his teammates that he was abusing cocaine, he was blatant about it! Nor was it any secret that supposed tough guy Parcells let him get away with murder in regards to skipping meeting, slouching at practice, etc.

Lawrence Taylor was the very definition of a high maintenance jerk. But Parcells was a hypocrite, just like the NFL and all of us fans in regards to stuff like this. You put up with it and look the other way when the guy doing it is one of the most gifted athletes to ever play the game and makes every opposing quarterback tremble in fear of him.

JM is an f'n fraud and anyone in the media who isn't calling him out as one, is a fraud too

Agree 110% Good post! Talk about summing it up in short order!

DC Dolfan,

I am going to make pancakes for you tomorrow! With real maple syrup!!

Take the Red Line to Silver Springs and I will be there waiting. WITH PANCAKES!!!

Sept. 22: JM wants RI to go out partying with two girls who are DTF to 'celebrate the fins being 3-0'. RI says he's tired. JM does what RI usually does when JM bails and calls him out, tells him not to "pull a jon martin lol"

Seems everything was just fine between JM and his teammates when they were winning and JM loved to party, hang out, bring random girls home and "hit the hookah' as much as anyone. Things clearly change during the losing streak.

You put up with it and look the other way when the guy doing it is one of the most gifted athletes to ever play the game and makes every opposing quarterback tremble in fear of him.

A host of the 92-93 back-to-back Cowboys as well! In his time at both UM & Dallas JJ had a way of getting the best out of a group while touting a line! His guys were NOTORIOUS HELL RAISERS but NEVER seemed to cross whatever parameter or guidelines he set forth. As soon as he left that team came unglued in spectacular fashion! They should have won at least the coveted 4th Title in a decade given the talent.

When Switzer came in you had guys from the equip dept. giving Irvin rides to score an Oz. of Coke for his head stash! When your buying an Oz. of Cocaine for your own personal head stash your faaar beyond recreational use!!

Remember the video of him telling the guy in the car, "This is some great Cola" while a kid at the door tells him, "I wanna be like you" and he tells him, "Nothing wrong with that little man!" It really was a Big-Black eye for the entire NFL yet he was Magic Mike!

I'm a HUGE fan of his and alot of the Fl. talent that was in Dallas then but they were the very definition of what was wrong with the whole Celebrity Athlete Hero worship culture and Jerry was the BIGGEST of Hypocrites going turning a blind eye to the train wreck many called "SOUTH AMERICA'S TEAM!

I thought magic Mike was someone else...

I thought magic Mike was someone else...

Posted by: Mark in Toronto | February 04, 2014 at 03:01 PM

There were a few Magic Mike's but LOL! His teammates called him this while the media referred to him as The Playmaker!

You ever watch the ESPN show Playmakers?

Pretty good stuff filmed up in my neck of the woods here in Toronto. About the real life of NFL players. One of the fitness sintructors I knew who also played in the CFL and the NCAA played a small role in the show. He said the NFL told, not asked, told ESPN to cease the show or there would be no more real life NFL for ESPN.

No Mark I can't say I ever saw it or knew about it? Sounds like an unflattering portrayal from the way your worded it?

There is nothing wrong with the Dolphins that a franchise QB wouldnt fix.

you guys know I have more to do with my time then just type right?? who says it's unproductive, you know how much this stuff is for a measly little ounce?? priceless

MARK IN TORONTO:

I LOVE THE HAMILTON TIGER CATS! I JUST WROTE THIS SONG ABOUT THEM!

"TIGER! TIGER! TIGER! CAT! CAT! CAT! PUT IT ALL TOGETHER IT SPELLS TIGER CAT!!

MOONBEAMS DANCE ON NEPTUNE AND CHIPMUNKS PLAY ON MARS, BUT ONLY IN HAMILTON WILL YOU SEE OUR TIGER CAT STARS!!

TIGER! TIGER! TIGER! CAT! CAT! CAT! WE ARE NOT LESBIANS WE ARE TIGER CATS!!"

DO YOU LIKE IT??

do u type with one hand too Tiger Cat??

J Martin will be remembered as the hero and brave man that dared to speak out about racism and discrimination in the NFL.

Tiger Cat,
how does your song sound when you're humming it? giving hummers?

Tiger Cat, there is already a Tiger Cat rally song ... learn Oski Wee wee...

It's almost as ridiculous as your intentionally stupid song.

f4l, unflattering, ultra honest, depends on your perspective I guess...

Jay,
most white liberal's are the first one's to cry racism, because that's what colors your world, because deep inside white liberals are the true racists.

Texas, does that Walters kid have good feet? Looks big enough (6'5", 320), has a lot of experience. I'll have to see what he does at the Combine.

Pancake guy, I already take the red line to Silver Spring.

Easy to figure out, isn't he. He's simple.

dungy is blindsided with tunnel vision poor little colored boy had his feelings hurt

Yup Grier,
next he'll be calling me names. They never have any good answers they are always triggered by emotion. That's why most of them are perverted deviants

I wish you had liked my song more.

:(

the first thing they cry is racism, then they cry victim.
They're always the victim.

Did Ross also include Vince Lombardi,Pop Warner and the Gipper on his committee ? How about Captain Queeg ?

Dear Mr. Ross : You are the problem. Please sell the team immediately. Please take Venus,Serena,J Lo,Marc and Jimmy with you.Thank You. P.S. Take Uncle Fester too.

Roger Goodell should force Stephen Ross to sell the team for conduct detrimental to the league. In a word, pathetic.

The Dolphins are run like our govt all talk no action or results! If Martin had a case to sue before all things were delivered then Incognito is definitely going to get paid! Once again in our over politically correct country we rush to judgement on the racist sexist bigot white man! Its bull ish!

no need for a committee both players are gone and this situation will most likely not happen again in the next 100 years of football, time to move on and get about the business of making the Dolphins a better team is what Ross and company should be doing.

every thing ross has done since buying the team has been a hair brained knee jerk disfunctional reaction

Deadlifts are a core exercise as well. Those 3 are the staple of all strength training.
