Dolphins fire Turner to piggyback on O'Neill firing

The Dolphins flew head trainer Kevin O'Neill to Indianapolis and fired him. They told offensive line coach Jim Turner to stay home ... but now he's been fired as well.

The club just announced both men have been "relieved of their duties effective immediately."

And with the announcement comes a statement from owner Stephen Ross and another from coach Joe Philbin.

From Ross, who made the decision on both men:

"The language and behavior as described in the Ted Wells report are against the core values of our organization. After receiving the report, I conducted my own internal review of the facts to determine the appropriate steps for our organization.  Jim Turner and Kevin O'Neill are good people who care a great deal about their profession and the players whom they serve, but both exhibited poor judgment at times which led me to this conclusion. As owner, I know firsthand of the high-character and dedicated professionals in our building. I believe in our team and know the hard work and sacrifices they make every day on the field and in the community. However, this is an opportunity and a teaching moment not only for the coaches, staff and players in our locker room, but also for participants throughout sports.  I am in contact with Jonathan Martin and we plan to meet soon. Next week, I will provide further details of our partnership with the NYU School of Law and the NYU Center for Sports and Society regarding a broader effort to address conduct in sports. My commitment to our fans, coaches, players and staff is that we will be a stronger organization going forward."

So Ross plans to meet with Martin? Interesting.

Joe Philbin, who has been noticeably absent in discussing this matter as I wrote today, released his first statement relative to the Wells report:

"As the Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins, it is my responsibility to create an atmosphere that allows each player the opportunity to reach his full potential. As Stephen Ross said, and I agree, the language and behavior outlined in Ted Wells’ report was disappointing and unacceptable. Since I first arrived in Miami, it has been my goal to have a team which honors our proud tradition and represents our fan base the right way both on and off the field.  It is not possible for a team to accomplish its goals when the fundamental values of respect are violated.  That ultimately rests on my shoulders and I will be accountable moving forward for making sure that we emphasize a team-first culture of respect towards one another."

Glad that Philbin holds himself accountable moving forward. As I stated Wednesday morning Philbin needs show how accountable he is and speak with the media Thursday before new GM Dennis Hickey does. It's the right thing to do.

[Update: The Dolphins just announced Philbin will speak to the press at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday. I am announcing my next open letter to the organization will have the following theme: Win more.]

earth to Monte…..have only been a few Dolphins owners, bro--aint exactly a long list

Fire Philbin- hire Dan Quinn!

This is what happens when you fail to research players before drafting them. Now we're ready for all the suspensions and finally the litigation to begin. And then Martin can enter the witness protection program while the other NFL teams tremble that another Martin doesn't pop up.

It wont be long before Jonathan Martin is heralded as a hero cleaning up the workplace for future NFL minorty players for decades to come. The racism could not be allowed to continue.

5 to be exact with one of them (Actor Danny Thomas) bought out relatively quickly by Partner Joe Robbie.

Out of them Ross is by far the most inept and it's saying something when you consider Tim and Mike Robbie's Ownership after Dad passed were they were even more notoriously cheap than they're Dad and Shula was the defacto Head of Ops with Mike a notorious junkie around Town!

Original Owner Joe Robbie gets the LIFETIME PASS in the group because he did mortgage his life's savings on the new Stadium (although with highest price hike's in history and relocated practically to Broward) and he oversaw the undefeated Season after hiring Shula away from Carl Rosenbloom but he also broke up the band in 75 allowing Kick, Zonk and Warfield to walk to the WFL. He also allowed Scout Director/ G.M. Bobby Bethard to walk to Washington were he built the Skins a 3 time Champ on his watch (one and they're 1st at our expense) All in all the LIFETIME PASS goes because all 5 SB appearances in team History on his watch!

Huzienga thought he could simply buy himself a Title at every turn but IMO was the right guy to buy team from Robbie's Sons he didn't meddle and spent big on FA's while always landing the Coach he went in search of like he did with JJ!

(Everybody now all of a sudden remembers it like there weren't signs all over the Stadium asking for Shula's head in 95)

Later admitting he made a gaff on letting JJ name Wannstedt successor getting on his jet signing hot young commodity Saban (again the guy fans clamored for)

Until now! These predecessors even with all their warts did more for this Org. helping it stay NFL Flagship than most Ownership groups in League history and this clown has destroyed that in 6 short Yrs.

Don't blame Ross. He's trying to fix the mess that Wayne and his cast of clowns started a long time ago. See Jimmy and his boy, Dave, and Bill, and Sporanus. Give Mr. Ross credit for trying and opening up his wallet. Go Dolphins.

LOL Win More! Agreed

Don't blame Ross. He's trying to fix the mess

He IS NOT trying when he only spends 70% of the salary cap.

While there is truth in your post then you must also be objective when remembering the moves made on Wayne's watch.

In 95 everybody around Town wanted Shula gone remember the 95 team had 19 former #1 picks on it and was put together for Shula to make his last run. These players were handpicked with only Deion Sanders getting away to S.F. The team fell flat so the best Coach on the market with a loyal Miami following was brought in to fix the mess. We all wanted this move made and now B-I-T-C-H as if Wayne didn't buckle to the local pressure here!

If Wayne was at fault for anything it was always caving to public perception and getting the man everybody wanted. He admitted his mistake with Wannstedt but it bares pointing out that Wannstedt was the hot commodity once as well from his days with JJ both at the U and at Dallas and alot of folks thought he was saddled with a bad mess of his own in Chicago when the move was made to groom him into the Dolphins job and by the way he had a couple of 11-5 Seasons on his resume so it wasn't like he was kept for the sake of it.

At the end of the fiasco Wayne gets on a Jet and goes down to Baton Rouge signing the next Big thing in Saban who again everybody wanted before Saban quit on the team. He later outbids Atl. for Parcells another legend we all thought could get us back before he sold to Ross. You call Wayne a clown but from my prospective he always got his man regardless of how it turned out and on his watch you didn't have a long line of people turning down the opportunity to live in South Fl Yr. round to Coach or run a respected Football team. So excuse me if I don't share your sentiments on passing the buck! It wasn't Wayne who missed on Harbaugh or Fisher along with 6 G.M. Candidates in short order!

This team has taken a fiery nose dive and planted firmly into the ground. It will continue burning as long as Mickey Mouse Ross owns it.

Ross has ruined a 39 year fan. I ditched this worthless team after the Jets loss because they play like p*ssies, and started watching Seattle. I must admit I like the way they play football. They get after you, and stay after you. It's how I wanted the Dolphins to play, but they are completely incapable of it. I actually had confidence that Seattle would beat Denver. NEVER had that kind of confidence as a Dolphins fan. Ever. They would have lost in the first round by at least 17 points because it's all they are capable of: letting you people down.

Maybe one day you guys will see this team for what it is: a complete waste of human sperm. This is not the team I once loved. The aura of the good old days are gone, even as Shula himself is on the board of directors, easily accessible to Ross. It has become the most disgusting, weak, laughably dysfunctional team in all of football, at ANY level. And I thought Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder was bad.

My advice is unless you enjoy this heartache, ditch this worthless crap. It will NOT get fixed under Ross. Find a team with a good owner. It felt strange rooting for another team in the Super Bowl, but you get used to it, just like you did with Miami.

Dear Armando,

You need to brush up on your psychology so your theories about why people do things may be right more often. Just because many people agree with you doesn't make you right. Time after time you've missed on this story. It doesn't help the Miami Dolphins, the city of Miami, the Miami Herald's reputation or your reputation. Even today, your theory that Ross and Philbin are in hiding or lack the character to speak up was dismissed. But you'll probably rationalize that in a way that attacks the truth because that's what people do to create scandal. You tried to make Incognito look less like the victim and Martin more like the head case. You tarnish Philbin's reputation by reporting your poor judgment about his experience and character. You try to make everything into a story. Just because they didn't fire Turner the day after the report you tried to turn it into a scandal. You want to see change? Then be the change you wish too see and offer some support instead of terrible storytelling so that fans who follow you start supporting this team. Use your voice to better this organization. Maybe you won't put your foot in your mouth so much!

Philbin made a very nice statement written by Dawn Aponte.

Armando, great stuff, keep it up!

Ross is an incompetent baffoon as an owner so "trying" doesnt even matter with him. He'll never have near a top team hes way too clueless.

Just think, Armando. Had you not shot your wad so fast, this matter would have ran it's own course and you would not have further inflamed a fan base who needs a break from this mess more then people in Hell need ice water.

Please, Armando, Don't pat yourself on the back here. Ross didn't read your "Open Letter" and make these moves. He is a calculative man. He had to have things looked at from perspectives I doubt you can even understand. Legal ramifications, the way his actions will be perceived by the NFLPU, how it will effect ongoing relationships with other coaches. So on and so forth...

Yes, from your Miami Herald Throne I'm certain it all seems so simple...But that is why your a reporter, and why Ross is a Billionaire several times over. He understands NOTHING is simple in this situation. Everything has a positive or negative effect on everything else and how it moves forward. And Philbin..? Joe Philbin is not going to "set up pressers".. or "Come crawling on his knees" to you media hacks before Steven Ross tells him to. Philbin is going to do what he is told until this fiasco runs it's course... "CHECK THAT".... What I MEANT TO SAY.... Is "Until the Media is finished shaving every single savory once of spin off this matter they possibly can....

Patients and the ability to place matters within perspective.... Always the Achilles heal of the media....

The quality of mercy is not strain'd......

To be merciful does not make us weak but rather Strong as it is the Mightiest of the Mightiest.

The Dolphins make the Marlins look like a world class organization.

And Dawn finally drops the hammer.

In the past I've considered Philbin a cerebral coach who typically coaches the game well as far as strategy, using timeouts, challenges ect. But it's all on him this year. Unless a coach really bombs he should get 3 years. I am now convinced that he is stubborn and may not be willing the make the adjustments needed to take the team to playoff success. He was forced to part ways with coaches who he should have let go or demoted due to poor performance. He sticks by Coyles who has wasted the talent on defense and the defense has got worse each of the last 2 seasons. He seems to be okay with mediocre and poor coaching. Make or break this year or your gone and will never be a head coach again!

Don't make too much of that "going forward" phrase Philbin used. People like him say that all the time, like "our community". They think they're supposed to say that stuff but it's just meaningless parrot yapyap at best. At worst, it's the vocabulary of a phony.

They won't fire my cause i look like Mr Mackey from South Park....mmmmmkay

I guess we can drop that 90% to 85.4%.....would you agree

Things are looking up..

Armando calling out Philbin-check

O line coach firing-check

J Martin and poor combine results gone-check

Incognito and the golf club gone-check

To do list...

Kevin Coyle and poor defensive game planning - needs to go

If Philbin can't out smart NFL coaches - he can go to

Get'em Armando......

Finally....a voice that speaks for the TRUE FANS....not the homers who want to bury their heads in the sand....

ROSS....I urge you to air all the dirty laundry....that is the ONLY WAY to get back on the path to winning......

Who cares about an off-season when you go about things back asswards.....

This is a step in the right direction....no doubt about it.....

Stay on them Armando.....the real fans appreciate it...the fake ones just want to talk about fantasy football (draft/FA)....cause the want to continue to live in fantasy land.....

Say what u want about RO $$ but at least he listens to the fans.

Last year he was calling season ticket holders to see how they felt about the team.

HICKEY its your world and your mess to fix. But I trust you.

since philbin is now accountable for his actions, then he should fire himself for his own stupidity and lack of accepting responsibility for those in his charge... what a jerk but even worse, a lousy head coach and lousy human being!!!

Who wants to eat the crow!! That Turner is still the O-line Coach!! And the NFL won't suspend him!!

Like I have said, Dashi is selective with his opinion. Reason you can only find about 5 times Dashi has been wrong. Yet, these clowns yap on for hours, FIRE ROSS CUT PHILBIN!!

Posted by: Dashi | February 19, 2014 at 08:58 AM

5 times my @ss....and how do you take your CROW.....warmed up....or served cold.....

Check again.

Dashi said J.Turner will not be punished by the NFL.

Getting fired, and getting punished by the NFL are 2 different things.

Everyone knew it was only a matter of time before Turner was gone. They hired the O-line coach from Houston a month ago

My point has been and will always be that the NFL won't punish anyone else for Bullygate!! Not J.Jerry, Not M.Pouncey, Not J.Turner, Not M.Sherman, Not J.Ireland, and DEFINITELY NOT PHILBIN!!

AND JUST CAUSE I AM WRONG 1 TIME IN THE PAST MONTH, Doesn't mean it negates the other 9 times Dashi was right this past month.

And when Dashi is wrong. He is wrong. Whether it is 98%, 90%, or even 2% Wrong. I admit Dashi was wrong. Dashi doesn't get embarrassed when he is wrong and goes and changes his name, or goes into hiding for months because they are embarrassed for talking so much garbage about the subject.

Main reason I always say, Stop repeating. Just cause you say something 1000 times doesn't mean we didn't get you the first 100 times.

We all know you went half way across the world because of how embarrassed you felt for talking Nonsense about Tannehill for so long.

Your just talking in circles now....and it's not making any sense.....

Just say....

"Wow....the fired Turner...Dashi didn't think that was gonna happen".....

And then let's move on.....but this refusal to acknowledge that you are wrong about a topic.....that doesn't speak well of you....not even on the net....

Main reason I always say, Stop repeating. Just cause you say something 1000 times doesn't mean we didn't get you the first 100 times.

Posted by: Dashi | February 20, 2014 at 02:44 AM

This is what I am talking about......

Say what you mean Dashi.....stop talking like the GD riddler.....

We don't need politician speak on this blog just so you have wriggle room....

You and others on this blog may not like what I have to say....but dam.....@ least you know what I'm saying....who I said it to/about....and were I am coming from.....

Fire Philbin, Trade Pouncey

We get the point after the 5th page of saying the same thing over and over.

Not trying to insult you. BUT... Your views are less objective than Salguero and you are more dense than a bomb shelter. You sound like a person who would take his ball home when things didn't go his way on the court.

Posted by: Big Red Button | February 16, 2014 at 10:03 AM

I kinda get it now.....the ABOVE IS YOU.....under a different name......

Riddle me this riddler.....

How is me saying the same thing 1,000 times under ONE NAME.....

Different than you saying the SAME THING 1,000 times under MULTIPLE NAMES.....

Hypocrite much??????

Do you think the Dolphins gave O'Niell a one way ticket to his firing? I DO!!!!!!!

If they when they fire Philbin (next year)....I hope they fly him to SIBERIA......

When the fire Philbin (next year).....I hope they fly him to Siberia.....

Wow are there really ppl who comment on this site 24 7? That really talk in the first person and use silly catch phrases like eh? Get a life lol.

Flushing the toilet for this offensive line works. However, dealing with Pouncey should be interesting because he is the only player who one would want for his ability. The Dolphins might be able to make this work with their cap space and going to the draft but wow developing chemistry will take some time. I see Moore starting @ QB for the Dolphins with an entirely new offensive line.

Why ask Philbin about bullygate if you fully well know that if he knows any of what was going on he won't say it, at least at the Combine, aside from his being cleared of any knowledge of it by the Wells report. Better to ask him what Players is he focusing on.

Big Eared ross and walking dead failbin are both full of sh@t. Why is wanna be thug pouncey still on the team? Everyone is replaceabe, the clown is not that good.

Sometimes I think that Armando would be better riddance than Philbin now is.

It isn't the first time you try and take one of the names I have posted under.

Don't you ALWAYS tell us dashe only posts under dashe?

Posted by: promichael | February 20, 2014 at 05:10 AM

Just when you think this poster can't get Dumber....

(Moore is still here because no GM in the league sees him as a potential starter....only promichelle does)

School Boy,

Philbin the Dolphins HC related about giving Moore a good look in preseason. Your Mama is calling you for school. Obey her and leave the computer. Listen to the teacher today so that you may elevate yourself from your current MORON status.

These guys were perfect sacrificial lambs because they needed to be fired anyway. The team conditioning has been terrible for years and the OL was a disaster under this OL coach.

philbin read another prepared speech written for him by the team. can this man say anything in his own words that could at least sound somewhat believable????? he even speaks to the team with cue cards.

Why all the chatter over the firings? We all knew with some degree of conviction that John Benton wasn't coming to Miami to assist Jim Turner, right? We have been expecting the firings of Turner and Kevin O'Neill since the Wells report. Steve Ross and the NFL had their own timetables which included an organizational review of the Wells findings before taking action. That O'Neill was at the combine was unfortunate but indicates that the Dolphins had no predetermined agenda.

Further, legal experts indicate that the Dolphins have acted appropriately through this fiasco, even if they are reluctant to address it in the media. Jonathan Martin didn't bring his situation to the attention of policy makers in the Dolphins organization. But when they found out about it, Martin's main detractor, Incognito, was suspended and Dolphins resources offered to Martin.

One can believe that this has all been handled between the NFL and the Dolphins since its inception. There's little to gain in hammering the team at this point. They have been moving in the right direction.

i commend mando for having the balls to ask the front office for answers fans want answers to. in the end its our team, not joe philbins! he should be able to stand, like a man, and answer our questions.

I firmly believe your open letter got their attention and they grew a conscious. Forgive the naysayers on this blog who do not realize the importance of speaking truth to power. Integrity in football and in life are essential. Kudos to you for a very fine, courageous and instrumental open letter!!

Keep up the good work in trying to bring our once proud franchise back to respectability. Its just a shame that we will need another losing season to make Ross realize that Philbin is incompetent. Same goes for Coyle. They should be on the chopping block also. Preferably now.

so apparently bullying a 310lb O lineman……is more offensive than battering/bullying a woman/finacee--interesting--wonder when the Wells investigation starts on Ray Rice?

we were a top 5 defense with mike nolan just a few years ago.

we were a top 5 defense with mike nolan just a few years ago.

Posted by: greg z. | February 20, 2014 at 06:57 AM

EXAAAACTLY, GREG Z!!!!! And these clueless dimwits just let him go!!! I cringed when that happened and I want him back!

not quite sure why the term or idea of "top 5 defense" a few years ago is important, or really what it means at times……because a few years ago, we were 6-10, 7-9, 7-9….what I do recall a few years ago, more importantly, is that our supposed top 5 defense couldnt hold late leads, coughed up plays/drives at key times, rarely could make a key stop when needed…..were gassed and out of shaped early in the season (2-3 season, not just one)……V Davis gassed, Dansby gassed (and embarrassing himself)…..the results on the field certainly werent bragging over.

Your browbeating of Philbin will not get you any closer to the organization. Your childish Open Letters will not endear you with your readers outside the Lemmings that agree with everything you post.

"Distinguish between advocacy and news reporting. Analysis and commentary should be labeled and not misrepresent fact or context." Why have seem to have forgotten that?

If the FINS were a top 5 defense...it was on paper (stats) only....

They weren't Top 5 like you think of SAN FAn D bing top 5....

Or Seattle D being top 5....

or evej the Texans of a season or two ago....being top 5....

They have NEVER approched the intimidation factor of a Raven's D that was feared by reputation alone for neaely a decade...

Don't you guys want REAL playmakers on this team (D)....real tacklers....maybe the Ronnie Lott's and Steve Atwaters are gone....but Seattle and SAN FAN show that you can still HIT in today's NFL....

Lets not be TOP 5 on paper....

Let's be TOP 5 in the oponnets mind....

Get over yourself Armanda.

Mercy, as a quality, far surpasses Truth and Justice as these are Universal constants while Mercy is only property of a Sentient Being.

I do remember local media and pundits saying Miami had a good defense statistically……but were scratching their heads over how that could be, as the results on the field certainly didnt indicate that--again, for the Dansby hand wringers…..the dude signed a big contract and then proceeded to come into 2 consecutive camps out of shape…..literally played himself into game shape during the first 5-6 games of the season (commonly referred to as "1/3rd of the season")--D may have looked better on paper under Nolan, but werent impressive on the field
