Mike Pouncey is in the Dolphins future

In the days following the release of the Ted Wells report there were questions what the Dolphins would do with center Mike Pouncey.

Would they trade Pouncey because he was implicated, along with Richie Incognito and John Jerry, as the alleged tormentors of Jonathan Martin?

Would they cut Pouncey?

Would they bring Pouncey back regardless of possible NFL sanctions (read suspension) for his part in the scandal?

Well, we have the answer, beyond the idea that Pouncey is not on the trade block, which I reported Feb. 17 wasn't an immediate issue:

The Dolphins are committed to Mike Pouncey. Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey told WMEN's Orlando Alzugaray Thursday that he has spoken with Pouncey in the past month and "is excited about the future."

And according to a club source, both Hickey and Dolphins executive vice president of football administration Dawn Aponte met with Pouncey's agent Joel Segal while at the Indianapolis Combine last week and shared a similar sentiment from the club.

That doesn't mean all is settled.

Right now, Pouncey is scheduled to hit the final year (2014) of his fully guaranteed $9.259 million rookie deal. That deal will pay Pouncey $1.63 million in 2014. But the Dolphins are able to pick up an option year on Pouncey in May that would tie him to the team for a fifth year through 2015.

The Dolphins fully intend to pick up that option, according to a club source.

But here's the thing: Pouncey, perhaps the second-best player on the Dolphins offense and the only player left from the offensive line of the past two seasons, doesn't necessarily want to play under his rookie deal for a fifth year.

Pouncey will want an extension.

So what will happen at that point?

Two options: The Dolphins, not needing more holes on the offensive line, will have to entertain the extension idea (very likely). Or the Dolphins might consider trading Pouncey then (not very likely, but it's an option that cannot be dismissed).

All that isn't an issue now but the matter will have to be addressed before the 2014 regular-season begins.

The key short-term issue is waiting on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to see if he hands down any disciplinary action against Pouncey -- not to mention Jerry and Incognito -- to determine if the only remaining starting offensive lineman on the Dolphins roster will have to serve a suspension.

On that issue, Pouncey has heard unofficially from the NFL Players Association that he is not likely to get suspended, according to a source. But, of course, the NFLPA doesn't determine whether there is or isn't a suspension from the league.

So that remains the most important question on the table. Until it isn't.

Martin doesn't want to play here.

I think if we can play better offense, better defense, and better special teams, we can win more games this season.

Hilarious, lol

Didn't like the Cooper or Peters move. Definitely the Peters move. J.Peters has to have the best Agent in the game. The man has managed to have been well paid his whole career for being good and injured. He has only been Elite for like 2 years in his 10+year career and they were at the beginning.

Pouncey,Smouncey. The line played just as well\bad when he was out last year. He is obviously a pothead, plus molly and probably other drugs as well, and will probably get suspended for drug use not Jmart bullying.
Besides since he is a gator he will always be stupid.
There is no hope for him.

The Browns have a sheetload of cap space and are cutting players left and right, to create more. If you think the Phins are gonna overspend, I am gonna go out on a limb and say Cleveland is gonna WAY WAY over pay. It wouldnt surprise me if Cleveland pays Mack 10 mill a year. If Cleveland needed an LT they would outbid everybody.

With LT's this year, we are kind of lucky and kind of not lucky. We have lots of money for a LT and can pretty much outbid anybody. I think Peter's deal will about guarantee Monroe wont accept an offer before FA, he shouldnt anyway! I think Monroe will average about 12 million a year and no way will Baltimore be able to beat that and that is kind of the bad news, Thats a lot of dough bro!

Richie Incognito is THUG THUG THUG

More like:

Pouncey buys by the Ouncey!!
Because he can!

Ferrari had it coming...

Resigning Jake should've been #1 Prioity last season. That was the Nail in the Ireland Coffin.

They should've cut Incognito. He was Fat and Slow last year.

We had the Cap Space to sign J.Long and A.Levitre last year.

But that was last year.

This year I expect Hickey to do his job. Sign 1 of the top 2 LT in Free Agency. And then sign another starter on the line for mid level Free Agent Money. Then draft a RT in the 2nd or 3rd.

Dashi Line for 2014

LT- E.Monroe or Veldheer (Top 2 FA)
LG- S.Brenner or D.Thomas (On team could start)
C- M.Pouncey
RG- Z.Beadle or G.Schwartz (FA OG)
RT- S.Henderson or A.Richardson (2nd or 3rd round pick)

*viciously presses the refresh button, over and over*

Apparently Cogs has admitted himself into a psyciatric facility.
I wonder if it's the same one Martin went to?
Woudn't it be ironic if they became roomates in the wacky ward again? Then the bullying can pick up where it left off.

Dashi, funny you should mention Levitre from last year. I was dissapointed the Phins did not sign him back then.

Speaking from experience? This behavior is acceptable if you are at work lol

Imagine you are Jonathan Martin. You are in your room in the phychiatric ward. The doctor comes in, and says "Mr. Martin, please allow me to introduce your new roomate, Richie Incognito."
Now that would be a most fitting climax in all this.

do they climax on each other?

Martin doesn't want to play here.

Most players dont want to play for the Dullfins...

Pitta signed. Monroe wont be as easy

Hopefully Monroe doesn't sign with the Rdubs and at least tests the market. All will be clear in a week or 2.

It will be very interesting to see what the Dolphins do.

draft is loaded with linemen. draft 2 in the 1st 4 rounds.
i'd do a pouncey extension now while he is on a bit of a hot seat.
that kid samuda was a pretty good center but so-so at guard. if he shows he can be a solid center why not move pouncey to guard where you can utilized his great mobility more?? he would be an every year all pro at guard. a lot of competition at center. see if you get some good ones in the draft. that kid brenner look ok. especially as an undrafted FA. that could take care of the entire interior line. sign on guy draft 2, maybe sign another late, after cuts for competition. it is possible to rebuild a better line in one season. if you make the right choices. hope hickey does better with o-line than ireland!!

Is Pitta worth 32 million? I dont know he has only had 1 really good year and it wasnt even as good as Charles Clay last year

Of course they're not trading Pouncey. The Dolphins have known their course of action for months.

Ever since the asst line coach was hired, they new the were going to lose Turner etc.

They did their due dilligence and complied with league. Chances are Pouncey will just be fined.

Hickey has his hands full as it is trying to piece together an o-line without Martin and Cogs and the ever under achieving John Jerry to trade the only good player.

He also has our only good corner to get under contract and a decision to make on out DT's.

It's funny people keep calling for them not to spend money because it's a wasted year anyway. You seriously think Hickey and Philbin are going to look at that way??

"Ah screw it lets save Ross's money we're gonna suck and get fired anyway". Not gonna happen.

Like I said yesterday, homer or not I'm pulling for these guys. If I could pull for Ireland or Cameron or Wanstache I can pull for these dudes.

The bleeding has to stop sometime. Doesn't it?? Good grief.

Good points jaison...I would also like to see them address the safety position. Clemmons does not take the ball away. We need a differenc-maker at FS and we need two safeties that are not liabilities in coverage.

These guys are nothing but trouble

After 18 years Hickey got his team to 4-12. YIKES!

Now a quality playoff team with an elite, franchise 25 year old QB needs a LT and that is a quality place to play.

I have been to Charlotte and it is a very nice small city. Lake Norman is home to a lot of professional athletes. There are no strip clubs and all of the signs are in English. The schools do not have metal detectors.

KC and Bal know all this that is why Monroe and Albert will be extended or franchised.

Talking about free agents being signed I was hoping for a change in the way we approach resigning our own.

It appears Hickey agrees with the Ireland approach of letting them test the market. Maybe its an Aponte approach??

I think if you want a guy back, you bring him in and tell him you want him here and ask him what it'll take to make it happen, and go from there.

I undertstand not wanting to overpay but the lack of communication is whats hurting things. Obviously these guys want to get paid but they're also human and need to know that they're wanted and a part of something.

The Ravens have been overspending to keep mediocre players the last 2 seasons.

Levitree would have been a great pick up. The Dolphins should've fixed the O-line last year. Free Agents didn't cost as much and we still had the cap space after signing Wallace and them.

The Ferrari was a limited J Martin edition.....

The Ravens will be lucky to win 6 games next year.

Russell Wilson should slow his role, he and the Seahawks will miss the playoffs next year.

Dolfan Rick,

Excellent at 1:07!

Hickey supposedly wants to sign Grimes before Free Agency.

Clemons would be allowed to test the waters. If not Start Jimmy Wilson at SS or Don Jones.

Posted by: Dashi | February 28, 2014 at 01:27 PM

yep wanted this guy last year too.

Resign Clemmons, he wont account for much and was the best safety on the team last year.

And Guards that can pull, not fatazzes that screw up assignments and just get in the way.

Hat trick beetch

A casual but effervescent scent, Creed Aventus cologne for men is a mature, moderate fragrance that expertly balances various citrus-based essences.

First introduced by Creed in 2010, Aventus has a profound, deeply appealing construction that brilliantly combines notes of black currant, French apples, Italian bergamot and royal pineapple with Moroccan jasmine and dry birch.

Just a touch of this magnetic scent will turn heads wherever you go. This appealing, resonant fragrance is the perfect choice for any number of casual events.

The salary cap increase was actually not good news for the Dolphins at all.

Had the old cap stayed in place, Miami would have had a distinct advantage in poaching some players from teams that would have been severely restricted financially. With the increase, those teams now have a lot more flexibility in retaining them.

Not sure why anyone ere saw it as a bonus for us. It clearly isn't.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Dolphins are "gauging trade value" for 2013 No. 3 overall draft pick Dion Jordan. IMO we will never get the value in return for what we gave up to get him in the first place. Plus we never played him, so why are we giving up on him so quickly? If they can get a first round pick and the team is confident he is a bust than fine, but that isn't going to happen.

Let Clemmons go he really stunk last year. Jones too played awful. I don't buy the flipping of spots made them whiff all those tackle s and get burned all year long.

If Atlanta gives u #6 right now for Jordan, do u take it, knowing that you can get Robinson or Mathews there?

If they are convinced he isn't a scheme fit, probably.

Posted by: Perfect72 | February 28, 2014 at 02:27 PM

On the other hand if they're only going to play him on passing downs why not get something for him??

Hopefully its all speculation and he will wreak havoc on opposing QB's next season....As a Dolphin.

Can we trade for Lane Johnson? I personally would keep Jordan. But maybe trading for Lane would make sense. Philly needs Jordan, their D is kind of weak. I think the irony would be priceless

Jones had an off year but he also showed plenty of ability prior to that so I wouldn't discount him rebounding and playing well going forward.

Clemons is a 'what you see is what you get' type. He is a marginal player--at best--and will not improve. I think they probably desire an upgrade in that spot if the opportunity is there.

Ross stated that Jordan was a unanimous choice as the bwst player in the draft last year. So philbin loved him too.

So...I guess Incognito's Ferrari was black or gay.

Man, get Xavier Su'a Filo wherever he is.

Ross stated that Jordan was a unanimous choice as the bwst player in the draft last year. So philbin loved him too.

Posted by: Marco | February 28, 2014 at 02:45 PM

Dont believe a word Ross says. He lies...often.

I don't think they will trade Jordan. Its just La Canfora shooting the bull like usual.

Trade Pouncey, Jordan, and Tannehill for Big Ben.

C'mon, man, don't complicate matters, Probably a Detox.

So...I guess Incognito's Ferrari was black or gay.

Pouncey is a JACKASS!!

Latest rumor is Hickey offering Jordan up for trade.

If you think the Phins are gonna overspend

Posted by: Rdubs | February 28, 2014 at 11:51 AM

Huh?? The Ross Dolphins are the cheapest franchise in the league. Thats just part of the reason they stink every year.

Package Jordan and Pouncey for a QB. Get rid of all of Irelands crap draft picks.

It makes sense, they have Vernon and Wake, why do they need another edge rusher? Chip Kelly might take the bait.

Forget about getting a #3 overall for Jordan, apparently, that was our mistake.
