Peters signs extension, affects LT market

Left tackles are going to be a big deal in the next couple of weeks as teams either lock up the good ones they have before the start of free agency March 11 or chase the best ones on the market for what is sure to be a lucrative amount of money.

Today the left tackle picture came into clearer focus when the Eagles signed Jason Peters to a four-year extension worth $41.3 million with $19.5 million of that guaranteed, according to ESPN.

Getting  the ol' trusty calculator and ... that averages out to $10.35 million per year.

And there you have the starting point the coming free agent tackles will shoot for and try to surpass. The reason that is the aiming point is they will argue Peters signed an extension with a year left on his contract. They will say he took less money for the security of staying with his current team.

They will say that players are worth more once they hit the open market.

Obviously, teams may counter that some of the tackles in free agency aren't nearly as good as Peters. And the agents will counter that most of the free agent tackles are younger than the 32-year-old Peters.

The point is the back and forth will still center around the $10 million a year and $20 million guaranteed mark.

That's what Branden Albert, Eugene Monroe, Jared Veldheer, Anthony Collins and others will be aiming for at the beginning.

That, by the way, assumes any of them reach free agency. Why is that a question?

In recent days there have been numerous reports about the salary cap rising. First the report it was going to $130 million. Then a report it was going to $132 million. Lately some media outlets are suggesting the cap number will be higher than $132 million.

And with each reported rise, if true, the chances teams keep their outstanding left tackles increase. Suddenly the cap-strapped Baltimore Ravens may have more of a chance of keeping both Monroe and tight end Dennis Pitta.

Suddenly, the Chiefs may be able to rethink the idea of keeping Albert.

The next two weeks should be interesting.

Finally a market for Jon martin:

Palm Beach Post:

"While the Dolphins won’t get anywhere near the 2nd round pick they invested in Jonathan Martin if they try to trade him, they might be able to get something for him. Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, who played with Martin at Stanford, told Pro Football Talk that he’d 100 percent be in favor of bringing Martin to Indianapolis. Luck was asked what he’d tell Colts officials if they asked him about trading for Martin: “I’d say I love Jon, we had a great time at Stanford together, still stay in touch with him regularly and I think he’s a great man,” Luck said. Luck said he last spoke to Martin a couple of days ago. Luck said there have been no internal discussions yet about trading for Martin or signing him if he’s released by Miami. In addition to Luck, Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton and tight end Coby Fleener were with Martin at Stanford. A source close to Martin told The Palm Beach Post on Tuesday that Martin does not want to return to Miami after he was bullied by teammates. The Colts are in the market for a right tackle, and if they really want Martin, they could probably acquire him for a late round pick — possibly a conditional pick based on how much Martin plays in Indianapolis. The Colts could also gamble on no one else wanting to trade for Martin and hope they can get him on waivers. But then they’d risk someone else making a claim."

So this means you work a night job. Translation, low paying job for low skilled fools. I'll bet your vacations are 4 days at the Motel 6.

no day job. Professional. College degree. Yes I do take 4 day weekends very often but I try to stay 3/4 star. But you keep waiting for OBAMA to give you a handout.....didn't I see you on the side of the raod with a sign that said....WILL WORK FOR FOOD?

Obama saved our country from the hatred Bush cultivated. He will go down as one of the very best presidents in our history.

wallyfin

Good football post. I hope you stumbled onto some truth here. It would be nice to get something for Martin.

Why cant we just talk football. Honestly its so annoying you people dont even make any sense at all. Sam, Marco, Bill, whoever else just stop.

bwhaaaaawwwwaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaa

That LOSER OBAMA will go down in history as the WORST president ever. Jimmy Carter is very thankful!

Wally, chances are everybody read the same thing. Rather than take up blog space, just post the link.

Martin won't want to play RT. He has pride and doesn't need the $$$, somewhat like McKinnie.

If atlanta would trade the number 6 pick for wake straight i would do it in a heart beat. I wouldnt be surprised if philbin and hicky threw in the next years 1rst because they know this is there year or they are done.

Is this a football post?? Didn't think so. All night Im trying to clean up this blog. Why don't ya help instead of complaining?

Wake 30+ yrs old....tell us why ATL would give up ore than a 2? do they just wanna help the dolphins?

A trade to the Falcons, on wake's behalf, is probably his best chance at a SB ring before he retires.

As long as Ross is owner, we're still at least another decade away, no matter how many 1st rd picks we get.

TRUTH

You have proven to be very dumb.

TRUTH, you say you have a life, yet you have nothing better to do that act juvenile on a blog? You are a contradiction, unable to attain an ounce of credibility.

Some idiot's impersonating the REAL TRUTH

Martin won't want to play RT. He has pride and doesn't need the $$$. For him, better backup at LT than starter at RT. Don't you see that's what started all this scandal in Miami? You don't understand the guy and it doesn't surprise me at all.

He is not the TRUTH

I am the TRUTH. Its on my birth certificate dummy. You are YG, Daytona, SCAM I AM, MURKY MARCO and all the other names you use. I am the way, the TRUTH, the light all who come before or after are false.

Really, like ALoco says, the level of Education in Miami leaves a lot to be desired. And, therefore, many shallow, superficial People here in Miami. Except for most of us Cubans, as our children attend very expensive, excellent private Schools.

Can I get on now cause before I couldn't

You were outted months ago. youre not a doctor and you have no patients.....not even sure you have patience!!

TRUTH the fact you are still here only proves you are a lonely person with no life. We are feeling sorry for you. Can I send you a box of girl scout cookies?

Gotcha is that what you offer the little boys in your trailer park?

You see, Daytona, when you say, not even sure you have patience, that's projection, another primitive defense mechanism, which means it is really YOU who has no patience.

Ok SCAM I AM, MURKY MARCO, YG you can come back now Im out of here. Just know I will torture you every single day I can with my apologies to the rest of the bloggers. It is best you just ignore them when they are on and maybe....just maybe we will be lucky and they will go away.

There are no trailer parks in Delray Beach. Just upscale restaurants, cafes, and well, a very nice beach.

I am giving you psychotherapy here, Daytona, gratis. You can't complain, can you?

TRUTH has a life...kind of sounds like Dashi is 95% right LOL.

Your parents no $$$, or did not want to put you in private School here in Miami? You're fukkkked, man.

Oscar,

Si me tienes paralizado, es de la cintura para arriba, por que "el Canyon" sigue disparando!

Preguntale a tu X

If TRUTH and Dashi had a baby together, I believe that child would lead us to world peace.

Obama is right, Education is the chief priority for this Country.

Wake's 6 Mil per salary makes him even more attractive in a trade. If not Atlanta which is out of the Clowney sweepstakes unless they trade the house then Dallas might be another option given there about to cut D.Ware loose in order to dump his 16.5 Mil 2014 CAP #. The Broncos could be another team that would entertain the idea. With Wake it's moving him to a 4/3 team given at his age and with his minimal pass cover abilities just can't see him anymore as an OLB in the 3/4. We have the future on the team now in Vernon and DJ who I feel could both play OLB in the 3/4 anyway after Coyle is finally mercifully (for us the fans) FIRED!

You have to be high on drugs if you think ATL will give up the #6 for Wake.

There is nothing wrong with the Dolphins that a franchise QB wouldnt fix.

Wake would bring a 3rd rder.

Hail to Odin Loki and Thor

Watching the entire Vikings season one great show

Let's give philbin as a living sacrifice

Give us blood

When you are talking Dolphin strong points you are talking punter. How pathetic is that?

Point out were I said anything about the 7th (not 6th) selection for a 32 Yr. Old DE/OLB who'llbe 33 in the next Season??? I simply pointed out that they're not gonna sniff Clowney without trading the house! This isn't last Yr. were the Raiders didn't really have a Bonna-Fide stud to pick with the 3rd overall selection when they traded with us for a 2nd Rd pick.

In this draft there will be a handful of potential ELITE talent at the top end with a couple of LT's (On there own better than the Top-2 last Yr. IMHO) Some serious impact LB's a QB or 2 along with the best athlete outside Clowney in Sammy Watkins. This wasn't the case in the 2013 draft! Atlanta is stuck at 7 unless it trades 3 high picks to move up to the 2nd or 3rd slot to grab Clowney and since they also need a LT(BADLY!) then believe they stay at their slot and grab one of the Top-3 (probably Lewan)

Wake at this point is a 2 Yr. rental before he gets on the wrong-side of 35! You may get a low 2 from a team like Denver looking to bookend V.Miller again or a high 3 from someone like the Falcons with the Cowboys maybe getting very interested with Ware coming off their books and probably trying his luck on a team with contention possibility. Wake is a luxury we can afford to move at this time with the talent we have at DE in a move that could be the additional pick that allows us to take a Tackle (Martin) Rd-1 with a Guard and RB in Rd-2 or early Rd-3. No need in waiting for the RB to fall to our slot later if we have the ammo early. I like Cam Wake alot myself but am looking at every angle I can (If I'm Hickey) to fix the mess up-front which will help my young QB by leaps-n-bounds!!

We shouldn't be in the mess we are in on the offensive line anyway. We could have drafted DJ Fluker or Lane Johnson in last year's draft instead of Dion(baby my shoulder)Jordon. Good grief sometimes you draft the best athlete, sometimes the best athlete that you NEED.

Posted by: rondaman | February 26, 2014 at 10:35 PM

Fluker had a ton of trouble with speed rushers, against us Vernon had his way with him and in the Playoffs the Bengals D dominated him at times. A grader in the rungame who helped immensely in that Dept. but was shown up in pass protection in the games I saw were Rivers was throwing on quick counts. Sometimes a heady vet QB can make those outside rookie blockers look better than what there showing.

Lane Johnson was NEVER a threat to unseat J.Peters and inthe games I saw Philly play wasn't even an every down starter. I get that the Eagles Offense is unconventional and that Johnson will be brought alon slowly to eventually be the LT. He may yet one day be the best of the 2013 group but he needed the polishing and we needed a quick return. I agree we didn't get one but am and will always be miffed at the way Philbin and Coyle ignored some of the flashes that Jordan gave and not just in pass rushing but in pass coverage!

@rondaman,

Jordan was just one of forty poor Ireland decisions.

All the draft picks Ireland wasted on OL, QB's, RB's, and TE's is mind boggling.
