« Ross: Wells report language, behavior "disturbing" | Main | It's NFL office's turn to speak on harassment scandal »

Too much? Will Joe Philbin come clean and answer questions?

When the Dolphins held their press conference to introduce Dennis Hickey as their new general manager, everyone in the organization who is anyone attended. And that means coach Joe Philbin, who was part of the interview process for GM, was there.

But as soon as the floor was opened for questions, Philbin left.

He obviously didn't want to answer questions about the interview process for a new GM. He didn't want to talk about Hickey. He didn't want to answer this question: "What responsibility do you believe you have for your relationship with former general manager Jeff Ireland deteriorating into dysfunction?"

I relate Philbin making himself scarce for the last of the Dolphins opportunities to speak with the press, and by extension you the fans, to get to this:

Philbin is good at not explaining what it is that troubles the Dolphins. He declined to take questions at the presser by simply fleeing. He often declined to explain what was wrong with his team in 2013, instead contending the club was "close." He declined to discuss the NFL scandal as it was happening by saying he could not talk about it because there was an ongoing report underway.

When Ted Wells asked Philbin questions, the coach made it quite clear he knew nothing that was going on. That was plausible to Wells.

That is unacceptable to me.

I don't expect Philbin to know every detail about every player on his roster. I don't expect Philbin to be aware of the interpersonal relationship between players away from the Dolphins facility. But a coach is paid to have the pulse of his locker room. Philbin particularly made a point of often telling us how wonderful the locker room culture in Miami was.

And yet, as Richie Incognito and his group harassed Jonathan Martin, often within that very locker room Philbin often vouched for, the leader of the football side of the Dolphins organization was completely ignorant to what was happening.

Stuff was happening at practice and Philbin didn't see it.

Assistant coaches were hearing and seeing and doing things and Philbin didn't know. And when he asked, they apparently lied to him.

Philbin asked players to "respect each other," according to the Wells report. And those players Philbin is paid to lead ignored the coach's wishes.

I don't know what's worse, the ignorance of the problem or being ignored by the players Philbin asked treat each other with respect before things get out of hand.

Either way, Philbin shows an obvious lack of leadership.

Will that get the coach in trouble? I doubt it. Owner Stephen Ross apparently doesn't see any problem in Philbin's lack of leadership.

I do. And I predict we haven't seen the last of it.

The Dolphins -- no, Philbin -- should have fired offensive line coach Jim Turner on Friday in the wake of that report. Didn't happen. The NFL might snatch the control from Philbin's soft grip and suspend Turner instead.

And when all this is over, will Philbin answer for any of this, the most embarrassing chapter in Dolphins history? I predict he will not. He declined to take questions about the NFL scandal when it was ongoing.

I doubt he ever calls a press conference and answers questions about the issue following the NFL's resolution of the matter. I doubt he answers why he didn't ask Martin why he walked away from the team? Why he never had an in-depth discussion with Martin about his May 2013 contemplation of suicide anytime after May 2013? Why he allowed Incognito to be a team leader when so many within the organization saw the guard is a divisive guy?

And if he doesn't give us some answers it'll be further proof -- up there with the losing record and two-game collapse at the end of 2013 and the dysfunction with Ireland -- that the Dolphins job may be too big for Joe Philbin.

Means nothing to a fraternity and other powerful guilds.

Posted by: Dashi | February 16, 2014 at 08:40 PM

WTF. You have Clay, Sims, Egnew and maybe Keller and if we are smart Hyde out of the backfield.

We have too many needs elsewhere.

The O-line will be fixed in free agency.

Can't wait!!

The Fins only need to get 3 new linemen. And if McKinnie resigns we only really need to go after 2 Blue Chip Free Agents. A LG and a RT.

One of the OG is already on the roster. And M.Pouncey will be the Center!!

You like Philbin as a good HC, Texas? If not absolutely sure why give him another chance and go with what we went thru with Sparano? I mean, we can easily differentiate the good from the bad Coaches down here. We have plenty of experience either way.

STFU Fool.

Those players were on the team last year. Did any of them act as a Big Target.

STFU you retard.

How can someone be so stupid.

It hurts just talking to you.

Yes I like Philbin as a head coach. I think he and Ireland were a bad mix because Ireland was still in the Parcell's draft mold and Philbin isn't. We'll see what Hickey and Philbin can do. In my humble fan opinion I feel like Philbin will have more say in the picks and FA.

Ireland and anyone may have been a bad mix. haha

Martin to play OG, what are you smoking ?

Posted by: Marco | February 16, 2014 at 08:40 PM

ya Zack Martin, Notre Dame ever here of him?

he can play guard or tackle....

Numb nuts wake up or get off the blog already.....

C.Borland and S.Skov are 2 MLBs that I also like. And we can get them in the 2nd or 3rd.

I don't know about Skov cause he went to Stanford. But he plays hard, and even played both sides of the ball early in his career at Stanford.

C.Borland is a Tackling Machine.Kuechly is Z.Thomas on Steroids. But C.Borland is the closest I have ever seen to a legitimate Z.Thomas comparison. A bit undersized but the true leader of his defense. And did I mention he is a Tackling Machine.

dashi why are you so upset today? chill out dude, it's just a blog.

nobody knows nothing. ya''ll are fighting over pork rinds.

Um...Dashi is fighting for something else....hint hint.

I hate the offseason. Speculating on draft picks people want that hardly ever end up on the team. More news about bullygate and the gross incompetance of Elmer Fudd-Philbin. Really, what't to get excited about?

Last offseason was full of aniticipation. New rule this year- expect nothing from these idiots and hope that we are pleasantly surprised. Worst case scenario... fire Fudd before the season ends if the Fins flounder. So tired of the same old crap

Has Philbin been fired yet?

Dooshi, tell us again how Lamar Miller is Barry Sanders.

This is what Ross gets for hiring a rookie HC. This never would've happened on Parcells or Fishers watch.

Hyde and Sims are the walking dead. I could sling a chicken and hit a better RB than them.

This team has to be so deflated they may not break 4 wins next season.

I've asked this two or three times now - after Philbin gets axed after a crappy 2014 season, do we not get a quality head coach because we won't fire our new GM? Will Ross ever break the cycle and just clean house, like Seattle did a few years ago? When do we bring in a head coach/GM team that can compete with New England's? When do we all get sick of shooting for second?

When do we all get sick of shooting for second?

Posted by: Chris | February 16, 2014 at 10:30 PM

It happened 5 years ago for me.

Yea man another season and even bigger problems prepare for a very bad year

The only way we get a quality HC at this point is if we get a young diamond in the rough--perhaps someone like Lasor. We thought Philbin would be this kind of find, evidently not.

I can't see a high in demand FA like Albert coming here unless we way overpay for him. In that scenario, I think he lays down on us and milks his contract for the max.

The only way to build a team is to draft well. It is possible to bring in a prestigious FA to a strong team and get quality results. When dysfunctional teams bring in high dollar FAs, they usually get screwed.

Subway is releasing a new sub. It is going to be lite chream cheese sandwiched between two saltines. They will call it The Philbin.

Lamar Miller may not be as good as Barry Sanders, but he's better than Reggie Bush. Reggie Bush went backwards. Philbin wanted to get rid of the fumbling and locker room cancer in Bush. This proved to me that Philbin is a top personnel guy. Mando is no different than the rest of you. Hates his life, hates my team. Miller in his second year will prove himself. Behind a weak offensive line he still averaged four yards a carry. Can't wait to see what he does after Philbin rebuilds the offensive line with his type of players.

Marc, I was concerned when I heard that you have breasts the size of a woman's. I am sure it has caused you some loss of self-esteem and embarrassment...especially in situations where you have had to remove your shirt around others and you could hear their muffled laughter when they caught sight of your pendulous 'man boobs.'

Please be aware that I will only judge you on the content of your character, not on your huge, heaving ta ta's.

Your Pal,

Get off of my blog loser.

I bet you suck on moobs.

Dashi you have the same problem Ireland had. He would wait indefinitely for his picks to pan out. He wouldn't give up on them when it was obvious they weren't panning out. How long did he hang on to Roberto Wallace, Lex Hilliard, some TE than sat on the bench season after season? He didn't even want to give up on Gates until Philbin told him he wasn't a football player.

Don't be so afraid to be wrong. Remember every scientist, inventor and chemist were wrong a thousand times before they got their breakthroughs right.

Miller is not tough. Not elusive enough. Can't get yards after contact.

Get off of my blog loser.

Posted by: Dashi | February 16, 2014 at 11:00 PM

Also Miller can't block. Nobody needs RB's that can block more than Miami right now.

Dashi is never wrong.

I predict Philbin will resign by game 13 in order to give Ross a jump on the next HC. I don't see how these players are going to be any more up for game day than they were the last two games, maybe worse now.

If you are over 20 and were never wrong then you should be a billionaire right now. Why don't you buy the fin's and show us how great a GM you are?

Of course it is possible to be never wrong and never right.

Well I see dashi intends to ruin the blog again. Shame he still has no life. I'm out.

Miller has speed as an attribute. If we can get him to the backside of the blocking, he can outrun anybody. Anytime I have ever seen him be impressive, he out ran the D. This is how he should be used--speed. I have never seen him break a tackle.

This draft is full of hard nosed RBs, some may not even have to be drafted. The FBs in this draft are very strong also. I think a few of them would make good RBs.

Research published in 2010 showed that 70% of Dominicans have some African genes in their maternal line, whereas 15% of Dominicans have Taíno ancestry. According to recent genealogical tests, the average Dominican is estimated to be 58.1% Caucasian, 35.2% African, and 6.4% Indigenous Amerindian overall

Domincans were sometimes sold to freak shows in North America and Europe in the 19th and early 20th century, where they were known by the name "pinheads". Many of them were presented as different species (e.g., "monkey man") and described as being the missing link.

Dooshi, tell us again how D Thomas is Emmit Smith.

Lamar Miller = Another Irescum bust

I told you guys what a great GM Ireland is. Remember?

The entire organization is a disgrace.
1. Incognito is a turd. The way you treat people tells a lot about the kind of person you are.
2. If Martin didn't like how he was treated, he needed to tell people to stop.
3. Sounds like Martin was bullied as a kid, so for some reason this is a recurring problem for him. The common link here is Martin, not Incognito or the Dolphins.
4. The other team mates that knew Incognito was a turd, are also turds for joining in and/or not saying to Incognito "Hey, cut it out."
5. If a coach like Turner knew, he's lame. Go away.
6. Philbin needs to be more aware of what is players are doing. Also, if Incognito is made a team captain/leader then that is lame.
7. I seem to remember Tuna talking fondly of Incognito. So I think Parcells liked the guy.
8. Leadership seems lacking from Ross all the way down through the organization. I'm still amazed that Ross became a wealthy business man. How in the world did the man do it? He seems totally incompetent.

Who did more to destroy the Dolphins?

This draft is loaded with talent from head to tail. We can get all the players we need in this draft or in the UFA.

The problem is that, we may not have the coaches that are capable of utilizing good talent. Hopefully the new OC has a grip on a feasible offense. Unlike-wise the DC appears to be an idiot.

Ross. Before him it was Wannstache.

Coyle will get the HC job when Philbin is fired. But it will take 4 years to fix Irelands mess.

Guys dashi is simply a pathological liar.

Says the guy that uses 1000's of sign in names and constantly chanes new and tunes depending on the situation and even personalities.

People in glass houses.....

Don't you have anything better to do ?

Then again I'm flattered that you think so much of Dashi that you impersonate me.

Coyle will be fired in a year.

Philbin stays.

For a dapper Spring look, may I suggest a classic cream or tan blazer with navy linen trousers. Combined with casual loafers (no socks, of course) and a splash of a classically fresh and cosmopolitan scent such as Guerlain Vetiver (pricey but sure to impress)you will look and feel fabulous!

Buenas noches mis amigos y también Oscar Canosa! Por favor, dime quién tiene el pene más grande y masculina en los Miami Dolphins. Es con gran anticipación que voy a aprender esta maravillosa noticia! También me gustaría saber cómo huele. ¡Gracias!

This is one of the worst franchises in professional sports. Thanks, Ross, Philbin, Ireland, Sporano, Cameron, Saban, Wannseadt, Johnson.

If you're just now losing hope for this team you are a better man than I. Anticipating disappointment has been the default setting I've assumed for years.

My emotional state is really not dependent on the fortunes of a football team.

I feel pity for those who attach that much importance to a meaningless game.

Buenas noche Pablo...

Joe Philbin is Dawn Aponte's puppet. He reads from her cue cards and walks away during press conferences because that what she instructs him to do. But, he probably doesn't have anything to say because we all know he is clueless when it comes to being a real head coach.

More of the same facts.

Frank from PA STILL does not know that football players are civilians.

My balls still itch.

Dont' tell US (fans) this crap, WE ALREAY KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS... tell it to ROSS....the FOOTBALL IDIOT OWNER....who decided to retain him SIMPLY BECAUSE HE LIKES HIM.....

HE MISSED OUT ON GOOD GMs because he kept a LAME coach!! exact same thing happened in reverse...when HE DECIDED TO KEEP IRELAND ON....missed out on GOOD COACHES AND PLAYERS....!!!

Dashi- No offense, but you repeated many times here that Ireland was a good personnel guy. Now he is trash?

Are you going to say Lamar Miller is trash next year after you find out he is nothing special?

And Reggie Bush went backwards? The guy did just fine in Detroit. MIAMI RB's went backwards... every other play! Lol

It should be painfully obvious to everyone out there why Philbin's kid killed himself. He was wise beyond his years. He knew his old man would be a failure as a head coach. I'd kill myself too if Philbin was my dad.

This whole thing sits right on Ross's shoulders like a squawking parrot. I absolutely agree that philbin is in over his head. A good football coach, yet lacks the leadership required to build a self-respecting family of football players capable of accomplishing the common goal of a championship. Granted, the team still needs more talent but all the talent in the world wont get you there when that talent is disrespecting each other to the point of distraction. So Ross is unable or unwilling to correct the situation or find someone who can. Why? Is the man afraid to admit his mistakes? Perhaps he just doesn't care. And therein lies the problem. If Ross wont or cant find a way to fix this then believing this team will find ultimate success is nothing more than a delusion.
