« Ross: Wells report language, behavior "disturbing" | Main | It's NFL office's turn to speak on harassment scandal »

Too much? Will Joe Philbin come clean and answer questions?

When the Dolphins held their press conference to introduce Dennis Hickey as their new general manager, everyone in the organization who is anyone attended. And that means coach Joe Philbin, who was part of the interview process for GM, was there.

But as soon as the floor was opened for questions, Philbin left.

He obviously didn't want to answer questions about the interview process for a new GM. He didn't want to talk about Hickey. He didn't want to answer this question: "What responsibility do you believe you have for your relationship with former general manager Jeff Ireland deteriorating into dysfunction?"

I relate Philbin making himself scarce for the last of the Dolphins opportunities to speak with the press, and by extension you the fans, to get to this:

Philbin is good at not explaining what it is that troubles the Dolphins. He declined to take questions at the presser by simply fleeing. He often declined to explain what was wrong with his team in 2013, instead contending the club was "close." He declined to discuss the NFL scandal as it was happening by saying he could not talk about it because there was an ongoing report underway.

When Ted Wells asked Philbin questions, the coach made it quite clear he knew nothing that was going on. That was plausible to Wells.

That is unacceptable to me.

I don't expect Philbin to know every detail about every player on his roster. I don't expect Philbin to be aware of the interpersonal relationship between players away from the Dolphins facility. But a coach is paid to have the pulse of his locker room. Philbin particularly made a point of often telling us how wonderful the locker room culture in Miami was.

And yet, as Richie Incognito and his group harassed Jonathan Martin, often within that very locker room Philbin often vouched for, the leader of the football side of the Dolphins organization was completely ignorant to what was happening.

Stuff was happening at practice and Philbin didn't see it.

Assistant coaches were hearing and seeing and doing things and Philbin didn't know. And when he asked, they apparently lied to him.

Philbin asked players to "respect each other," according to the Wells report. And those players Philbin is paid to lead ignored the coach's wishes.

I don't know what's worse, the ignorance of the problem or being ignored by the players Philbin asked treat each other with respect before things get out of hand.

Either way, Philbin shows an obvious lack of leadership.

Will that get the coach in trouble? I doubt it. Owner Stephen Ross apparently doesn't see any problem in Philbin's lack of leadership.

I do. And I predict we haven't seen the last of it.

The Dolphins -- no, Philbin -- should have fired offensive line coach Jim Turner on Friday in the wake of that report. Didn't happen. The NFL might snatch the control from Philbin's soft grip and suspend Turner instead.

And when all this is over, will Philbin answer for any of this, the most embarrassing chapter in Dolphins history? I predict he will not. He declined to take questions about the NFL scandal when it was ongoing.

I doubt he ever calls a press conference and answers questions about the issue following the NFL's resolution of the matter. I doubt he answers why he didn't ask Martin why he walked away from the team? Why he never had an in-depth discussion with Martin about his May 2013 contemplation of suicide anytime after May 2013? Why he allowed Incognito to be a team leader when so many within the organization saw the guard is a divisive guy?

And if he doesn't give us some answers it'll be further proof -- up there with the losing record and two-game collapse at the end of 2013 and the dysfunction with Ireland -- that the Dolphins job may be too big for Joe Philbin.

This from the moron equating the Dolphins with the Patriots and the Saints. Here's a new flash genius, Belichick WINS. Payton WINS. Philbin can't even beat the Bills. Now you get it Einstein?

Miami Dolphins = BIG MORONS

No one is giving a 1st rd pick for Pouncey. Some homers are very delusional.

Why would you cut Pouncey when he clearly has good trade value? Trade Pouncey or demote him to guard and pay him peanuts. The only reason I'd possibly keep him and mve him to G is because he is clearly a follower.

No one said a 1st round pick cheeseDIKK.

Just make sure when pouncey is traded, hickey doesnt settle for a second or third rounder!

I personally like your idea of moving him to OG anyway. Now that punishment from a paying standpoint!

Oh and if you trade him, get a 1st round pick for him, not a 2 or 3 like ireland would have settled for!

Posted by: deity | February 15, 2014 at 11:56 AM

Who is the cheeseDIKK you IDIOT!! haha

Mirror we need 3 draft choices on o-line and at least 2 free agents.

We need 5 new starters on o-line, here is how I would go:

Sign Brandon Albert LT

Sign Alex Mack C

Draft Z. Martin RT or OG 1st round

Mason Walters OG Texas or Brandon Linder OG Miami in later rounds

there are other free agents also like

Zach Strief RT Saints

Jon Asamoah G Chiefs

I think Philbin will want Pouncey traded.

I'm sick of this whole situation. ... All I care about at this point is whether or not we'll lose any draft picks

Dont get me caught up in your fight guys.

Im just saying that Hickey better get a number 1 or future number 1 in 2015 if he trades pouncey. Dont settle like ireland would. But based on how the dolphins have run things these past few seasons, Pouncey isnt going anywhere. He will probably get suspended a few games at most if at all.

I know you are all easily fooled. It's ok. It's all the chemicals in the processed foods the government has weaned you on.

If you see a post that is reasonable or sensible from me, then it is the real me. If it is ridiculous, absurd, plain stupid, a short senseless comment, or poorly written, it is from one of my many admires that love to impostor me when I am around.

So what r u suggesting mondo? Fire Philbin after he already screwed up in the GM search.

Failbin Out!
No one is gonna buy a sick team w/an outmoded stadium.
So either Ross Reboots for real, or its L.A. here we come.

Your theory has one problem- Mack will be resigned by Cleveland bc they have the cap space to do it. But i do see your other 4 solutions as very very viable for the Dolphins- Albert, Martin, Walters, and Asamoah/Strief

After reading the report Andrew McDonald seems to have gotten the worst of it.

A post another poster made after you made your comment and I made mine. So, what were you saying? Dooshbag.

The continuous dwindling of the fan base helps Ross make a convincing case to Goodell that LA should be awarded to him.

Pouncey to the trade block try to steal a 1st or 2nd rd for him before the draft. Incognito should be a pro wrestler and Jerry can go away. Turner to the VFW where he can get his kicks in the mens room.

Agreed. Philbin should be fired simply because he has no idea what is going on with his team.

It blows my mind Jim Turner is still on this staff!

Frank, Pouncey was a mid first round pick to begin with in a league that doesnt usually give up 1st rounders for centers. So I would find it highly unlikely that they could get a 1st rounder for Pouncey especially after his character has been revealed. Just try to get some packaged picks for him like 2nd and 5th and or future. 1st VERY unlikely but then again Irsay might do it. He seems to have no issue with coughing up important picks for issue players so he can make tweets about it. Now that guy is an idiot, and they need OL pretty bad too. Hm, I could be on to something here.

You twitter-heads out there start tweeting; Bloggers start blogging - Tell folks to ask Roger Goodell to suspend Joe Philbin. The e-mail address of Roger Goodell is not listed. You may write to him at National Football League 280 Park Avenue Suite 12 New York, NY 10017-1216 USA. You may also contact NFL by calling (212) 450-2000.
If Ross won't fix it on his own, maybe a suspension will get the ball rolling.

No way they trade Pouncey. They are going to wait for this situation to blow over and move on. As they should.

I'm sure every NFL tam including the super bowl champs have at least a couple adolescent knuckleheads on their rosters.

Pouncey, and Cog's were obviously over the top and Martin couldn't handle it and it blew up.

Cog's and Martin will be gone. Time to move on. Jerry is a free agent who hasn't played well, if he comes back it will for cheap. Pouncey is a pro bowl center who is under contract.

He will be back, albeit with a new surrounding cast, a new o-line coach, and under more scrutiny.

Clean house - should hve started with the GM search and giving full control to whoever was the selection. The offensive line should be a part of that house cleaning too.

Hickey would get crucified if he traded pouncey for a 2 and 5. Come on man. That sounds like a jeff ireland move. If you cant get a 1, you dont trade him then. Also, dallas "reached" for the best center in the draft last year in..... the 1st round.

Dolphin rick,

I agree with you that pouncey wont get traded. Im just saying if they entertained the idea at all, it should be for a number 1 now or in the future.

Gotcha. Of course you never know what this team will do.

Snakebit doesn't even completely describe it anymore.

Dolfan Rick,

Maybe Parcells fat a-- knocked a mirror over is his new dolphins office 6 years ago that led to 7 years of bad luck. We are entering year 7. Things are looking positive for 2015!

Yes Dallas reached for a center in the draft. Jerry Jones is certifiable at best. I also remember them being DESTROYED by everyone for doing so.

You don't trade the only guy on your OL that can actually PLAY (glad you fools aren't GM). Pouncey is a classic follower. Put a real leader in charge, and he'll march like a good soldier. Put a lunatic in charge, and you see what you get. Get a vet in here and watch how Pouncey cleans up. Clabo, Incognito, Martin and Jerry should get the boot. The only one I'm not sure about yet is McKinnie. He should be gone, but they will need to get Albert or another guy in FA to replace him. I don't trust the Alabama kid to start in this make-or-break year who's still rough around the edges. That's a recipe for another disaster.

So its okay to be a POS as long as you can play ball. Classic. Ggetting rid of Pouncey sends the message, this aggression will not stand. Put Garner at center next year, he has played well there when asked. Who wants a Center, you know, THE guy who should be making all the OL calls and LEADING the OL that is a follower. Some of you guys logic is out there. LOL

Hunger games is the future.

too bad the heroin addict wont be there to lead the revolution!

Dear Mr. ross,

Please sell or move the team to San Antonio. Great place to start over.

Yes, it IS ok to be a POS if you can play. Some of the best are exactly that. Why did Parcells keep LT? Gibbs keep Dexter Manley, Belichick keep Moss, Carroll keep his secondary? Because they can play, and the object is to win. Garner couldn't start on the worst OL in franchise history, yet you want to promote the geek? Ok, sounds brilliant. Pouncey is a ProBowler, and was a fine follower in 2010 when Jake Long was the leader of the OL. I don't see any problem with that, centers aren't always the leaders of their respective OL's, so what are you talking about?

Exactly what I posted. Obviously.

Armando you are really hysterical and know nothing, i mean nothing, about how a locker room and an NFL team operate. You write this just because you hate Philbin and you don't have anything intelligent or interesting to write about the Wells report. It's very disappointing.

He will be back, albeit with a new surrounding cast, a new o-line coach, and under more scrutiny.

Posted by: Dolfan Rick | February 15, 2014 at 12:15 PM

Philbin (for reasons beyond me) is sticking his hands in the proverbial fire for Turner. If the OL was the worst in Football and you OL Coach is participating in harrassing his players then (in my mind) he should be gone before the players themseleves like a teacher or College Coach he is in an authoritative Position and can see were any player (not a full blown Star) would fear opening his mouth, his behavior is unacceptable and Philbin's lack of institutional control is only exceeded by his lack of over-sight if you wish to believe he truly knew nothing.

I understand how some feel about the treatment of Martin but like Coltrane said on the last page he helped the situation get worse himself by not addressing it head on. I also come from a different time coming up in Miami in the Middle to late 80's and what he experienced (however horrible some of you wish to see it) isn't the worst thing I saw growing up. In my time there wasn't any of this PC Crap alot of you grew up on today and "IF" you went to the principle's Office, Coach or person of authority to complain you'd get your butt Kicked when everybody got out of detention, plain and simple! Because in those days that's the worst form of punishment that would have been administered.

Some of you post about some talking tough ect, ect.... But in reality in those days you had to stick up for yourself or spend the entire coming up period as "EVERYBODY'S MARK!" So excuse me if I don't completely grasp were Martin is coming from. I read through this report (No not the whole thing) If you read it between pages 6 to 20 it gives you the rundown on what happened per Wells findings and the treatment of a lowly Assis. Trainer is DISGUSTING from a group of men he had to see as Bosses for one and twice his size by another.

I do however wonder why we seem to be the biggest news in Football when 2 time SB Champ and 9 time Pro Bowl selection Darren Sharper is being charged with 7 counts of rape in 3 States??

The old timer is here with the "good 'ol days" talk about how it "use to be" and how wrong we are today. heheheh ;)
I love it, all the advances we can make as a people but it doesn't mean anything because the old codders cant lay themselves out to pastor. Hey man, gas isnt 35 cents anymore, women are allowed to vote and believe it or not blacks and whites are using the same bathrooms these day. Crazy huh?

There was nothing to know there was no bullying just had a pussy boy on the team. Philbin should still be fired because he sucks at coaching.

For the last time-

Im not saying to trade Pouncey! I said if the Dolphins did- they better get a number 1 back for him! IF you are going to critique my comments bloggers, please understand what I am saying.

Good for you Mando, for callig out this so called NFL head coach (aka Mr.Clueless). Philbin should have been fired immediately after the loss to the Jets and missing the playoffs. Ross is not the person that I want as the Dolphins owner going forward. MakeS ya wonder how he got so freakin rich!

That supposed "reach" that dallas made in the 1st round panned out. The kid was their second best lineman behind their LT last year. He was actually one of Jerry Jones' better picks!

Posted by: Frank from PA | February 15, 2014 at 01:10 PM

I understand what your saying Frank but remember that Pouncey is an UFA in 2015. So any team that would entertain the idea does so with the understanding that it needs to be a sign and trade that would take a substantial financial (CAP) commitment. You weigh (however indirectly) his involvement in the Aaron Hernandez scandal were you have Mass prosecutors hitting him with subpoena's about his relationship with AH going back to some drive by incident in Gainsville to this harrassment issue in Miami and unless we dump him for a 3 already under a reasonable guarantee in his next contract there will be no line of suitors.

Jonathan Martin was hiding in the bathroom of a yacht.

Telling his parents he's too scared to stand up for himself
because he never had to do it before.

He would not have lasted 1 day back in my high school days.

Aponte is writing Philbin a cue card that addresses all of Armando's questions right now.

Jerry was MOCKED in both the ESPN and NFL Net. coverage of the last draft for making this pick. However whoever posted the remark is a minimal fan of the NFL at best because everbody was eating crow for doubting this kid from the 2nd half of the Yr. on. He is a cerebral type who was making all thie line calls by that time taking a burden of Romo aside from solid in run and pass blocking.

This summed up this team disaster very well. The house should have been cleaned out.

Then the answer is- you do not trade him based on what you are telling me. Im onboard with not trading him bc I dont think we will get value for him. Im on the same page as you. Im saying the only way to trade him is to get equal value for him and I dont think you can.

Personally, Im a read between the lines person. If the Dolphins do try to move pouncey, then that means the stuff with hernandez up in NE is more serious than we publicly know but the dolphins have this inside info and know its going to be bad for pouncey. They wont move him bc hes a follower in this bully stuff that happened.

He would not have lasted 1 day back in my high school days.

My point exactly before I was refered to as some Old Coot? I guess whoever posted that can't do the math given I said I went to H.S. in the late 80's graduating in 89.

Frank I am not against your idea and am actually more worried about Pouncey at this point than Incognito given the Gainsville "GANGSTA" Attitude and connections. My point to you is we get no compensatory compensation for him till some of the clouds that are circling this kid clear up which will take time given he will be called to testify in the AH trial and as you mentioned we won't know publically what it is that prosecutors believe they linked him to till then.

I would trade Philbin for a peanut butter and jelly sandwitch and find a way for ROSS to sell the fish.

Big Eared, Big Nosed circus monkey Ross will do nothing about it. The suckphins will have the same loser hc same loser qb same shi$$y defense and same or worse record again.

Dolphins would be "coots" to keep Pouncey at this point. Cogs/Jerry will be gone. Pouncey will leave in fa in 2015. You can bet money on this.

Trade him now or it'll be yet another 1st rd Fins pick that did not last until his "2ND CONTRACT" in Miami. Trade him now or we lose him for absolutely nothing in 2015.

As someone else posted, I do believe we can still get a "LATE 1ST RD" pick for him right now. While we're at it, shop Wake too. He could be worth a late 1st to early 2nd rd pick.

Then we can possibly go into the 2014 draft with 2 or 3 1st rd picks, and at least 1 2nd rd pick. Add free agency and the oline could be completely revamped in a single offseason.

All you wanna be owners think its simple to just fire everybody. If any of you were in charge there would never be any games one.

If the NFL comes down hard on the Dolphins which I don't see happening I sure hope the NFL starts investigating the other 31 teams because if they don't the Phins can sue the NFL for bullying.

Games won

If Martin doesn't realize this yet, he will realize it eventually in hindsight:
When trying to be a so-called "good sport" about it obviously wasn't working, he should have turned the anger loose, called out the villains in front of the whole team--coaches included-- and warned all that the next offense would result in a violent physical counter-attack.
They probably would have understood that. And if anyone stood up to challenge him(likely Incognito)he should have carried out the threat immediately.

No way will Pouncey return to the Dolphin when he turns fa in 2015. If you believe he will, go purchase that bridge which is always on the lamb.

You'll be much better off. If Pouncey's a Dolphin in 2013, we're so screwed!

Some people should try actually watching the game of football not just the football, no matter what the announcers tell you on tv pouncey is average at best and I'm sure the people who make deals around the league know this

SAM I AM | February 15, 2014 at 02:13 PM

Yeah that sounds like a smart move, get rid of your Pro Bowl OL player. Jerky!
