Dolphins concerned about what you think of them

Early Friday the Dolphins, looking around the free agent market for a right tackle and finding very few left, tried again to get Zach Strief of the New Orleans Saints to visit.

He declined.

And the news was reported by The Herald's Barry Jackson thusly: Free agent right tackle Zach Strief declined an offer to visit the Dolphins. Indications are that he prefers to return to New Orleans.

And the nugget was picked up by ProFootballTalk.com.

And the Dolphins apparently freaked.

The team that has suffered its share of notable rejections -- Jim Harbaugh, Peyton Manning, Jeff Fisher, Nick Caserio, Ray Farmer, Tom Gamble, and Lake Dawson -- is sensitive to the idea that it is being rejected on any front by anybody.

And the club apparently felt there was a perception the Strief decision not to visit stirred the rejection pot again. This despite the fact neither report by The Herald nor PFT mentioned the words "rejection" or "spurned" or anything close to it.

The Dolphins complained to Strief's representation, anyway.

And so this morning agent Ralph Cindrich went on his twitter account to correct the record that, frankly, didn't need correcting because the facts were all there and the perception he was trying to correct wasn't shared by everyone, anyway.

So Cindrich tweeted:

"I was made aware from the Dolphins that there was an incorrect perception the Dolphins were spurned-not the case. Saints negot's heated up."

As I've been reporting on my twitter account, the Dolphins like Strief. He's actually the only proven right tackle left on the market. But he's 30, has roots in New Orleans, loves the team and wants to stay there. The Saints want to keep him but their salary cap situation is so problematic they're being forced to trade or cut good players.

So Cindrich, a longtime good agent, was hedging his bet by seeking other teams -- including the Dolphins. Cindrich has no issues with the Dolphins. Strief has no issues with the Dolphins. They don't talk on the phone and giggle like little girls about how ridiculous playing for the Dolphins would be.

It's just that Strief wants to go back to the Saints. It's business.

"Saints Mickey Loomis could not promise Strief home-cap rm," Cindrich tweeted. "Concerned, I sought teams, Dolphins fr start-every day. Great place for new start."

That does not mean, however, there will be a new start. It just means the Strief camp isn't mocking the Dolphins.

"Last tweet: Dolphins front office class people. Team took a hit when talks heated up with Saints. We never had a Miami visit set," Cindrinch added.

So where does this leave us?

Zach Strief, as of this writing, is not visiting the Dolphins. He has declined the invite. He's negotiating a return to the Saints. But his agent wants you to know that doesn't mean he's spurning the Dolphins.

More interestingly, the Dolphins want you to know they're not being spurned.

They're kinda sensitive that way.

First

Ah, so that's what those tweets mean...

That was a useful and timely blog entry Mando, nice job

OK - they did get rejected though...

Ive never been first before on these blogs! Mando- I have thought this all along. Anyone who has been following my posts wold see that it was obvious Strief was not rejecting the Dolphins. He wants to stay in NO and would probably play for peanuts left behind by the ringling brothers circus that just passed through town. Good for him. His is loyal to his team. Thats admirable, but Ive also been saying that it is very foolish. The man is almost 31 and this could be his last decent sized multi-year contract, and he is waiting on a team that literally does not have enough cap space to sign any draft picks. Business is business. Maybe Strief comes around, maybe he doesn't. But if I was Mickey Loomis, I would have the decency to say- "dont wait on us Zach- we just dont have the cap space. Go search and maybe something can happen for us later, but I dont expect you to wait. The way this all plays out- and this is only conjecture on my part- Its like Loomis and Payton both said to wait for them, and Strief has, but they cant create cap space where there really wasnt any....

That's funny not much of a story but still funny. Come on Phins FO pull up your big boy/girl pants and toughen up. I would suggest they not read this blog in any case since they are sooo sensitive.

Thanks for the clarification Mando. Sounds like the guys heart is in New Orleans. Good to know we are an option if things fall through.

MIT,

How is that rejection? Strief has not even taken one other FA visit nor intended to. The man wants to stay in NO. ITs admirable he is so loyal. BUt they cant even afford to give him a veteran minimum contract.

Phins have contacted specialist Hester..there's some news. Please let it be true...so frustrated with Thigpen last yr.

Dolphins concerned about what you think of them??

A bunch of incompetent baffoons running a laughingstock franchise. A total joke. There is NEVER any SB talk in Miami.

MIT,

Rejection has a negative connotation. You know this! Strief rejected 31 other teams then bc he apparently only wants to stay in NO. Hickey is talking to the agent and trying to tempt the player. Thats good gamesmanship. Dont you think the agent is telling strief- "go talk to this team. Theyve got money and will pay you handsomely." He gets a bigger commission if his player gets a bigger financial deal.

What the Dolphins are being here is NOT CHEAP. They want everyone to know that they are willing to pay for the services of a talented OL, but he is too loyal to a team he has played for his entire career but unfortuantely has no money to sign him.

Wait... Is the Dolphin's FO being bullied?

Lincoln,

Please dont be idiotic. The Dolphins FO has tons of bad press. I would want the facts straight too. THey looked like they were rejected in this case when its VERY OBVIOUS they were not.

BTW, this front office has improved this team leading into the draft.

The Dolphins should be sensitive ; Mike Florio & Co. at Pro Football Talk have been hammering them all day , every day for months on end -- just this morning , one of their staffers called our OL "the most dysfunctional offensive line in NFL history" !
***** Here's what we need to do -- everyone go to the PFT home page -- there is a section there called "Scoops" -- it allows you to send an e-mail that goes directly to Florio -- everyone go to that "Scoops" screen and send an e-mail saying: "Please Stop Slamming The Miami Dolphins". No profanity or rude comments , just politely ask them to stop putting out derogatory articles about our football team. If enough people do this , it might have a positive effect.

Mark,

There you go....right on cue from Armando. Good job on picking up on those tweets, Mark.

I think he wants to be back in NO and they want him back. Only way we get a chance is if they can't make it work. Part of the problem in paying a very good QB, Drew Brees, what they are paying him.

Hester, "I would love to play for Miami"

Journalism du jour... Beat down on the Fins FO. Let these hacks have their day...

Believe it or not, AGENTS are taking the high road. Wow!

The Fins have gone Soft.

They shouldn't care what the PERCEPTION is.

The PERCEPTION is The Fins have been Mediocre for a long time. Since Marino Retired.

WINNING CURES EVERYTHING.

FORGET STRIEF.

SIGN THE NEXT BEST RT TO A 1YEAR DEAL.

Woke up thinking fins are also saving some serious cash to re-up some veteran/keeper contracts after FA/draft settles down.

That and the fact that I truly believe that vet RBs FAs do not want to join a team prior to OTA.

Practice? We're talking about practice!

Offer still stands on Dolphins Not picking Z.Martin at #19.

I remember somebody calling everyone an idiot in here before free Agency. Saying the Dolphins were going to draft 3 Linemen. Another one saying trade Pouncey.

Where are they now?

Why don't they ever admit when they are wrong?

Sounds like the 'skins are working hard to sign Donald Penn to play RT. We should beat them to the punch.

BTW, this front office has improved this team leading into the draft.

You spew that nonsense every offseason.

"Quint , that doesn't prove a damn thing."
"Well , it does prove one thing , Mr. Hooper ; it proves you wealthy college boys don't have the education enough to admit when you're wrong."

Please let it be true...go get Hester! Thigpen drives me crazy as a specialist. Look we have plenty of cap space to upgrade some positions...do it!

Pray for new ownership.

I don't know that there are really any RT's available that are really that good.

Maybe its time that Wii Yeatman either piss or get off the pot. I think he could be our starter but we should double down in the draft on OT/G .

Look we have plenty of cap space to upgrade some positions...do it!

Posted by: Bad Phans | March 15, 2014 at 12:37 PM

Ross is pocketing that money.

Bad PR move, should have kept their mouths shut. Harvey Greene would never done this. Must have been the new PR guy.

Lincoln,

Ive been on these blogs for less than one year. The team did technically improve from the season before to 8-8. How is it nonsense you friggin Chooch?

There are some options at RT. Penn is not out of the question either. Like I just said we have plenty of cap space go out and get some guys!! At the very least we can drive the prices up on guys like Blount, Penn and Strief at positions we need. COMPETE FO COMPETE on all levels.

"Quint , that doesn't prove a damn thing."
"Well , it does prove one thing , Mr. Hooper ; it proves you wealthy college boys don't have the education enough to admit when you're wrong."

Great quote, but this blog is generally too dumb to understand classic movie quotes.

Half of you were mad at Ireland because he did not take the advice of the fan base. Now the FO is bad because they are trying to resurrect the idea of Miami as a great FA destination? We have gotten anyone who has visited us this FA period, so it seems like someone is doing something right.

Is HOmar in here to?

You know what? We have been mocked numerous times because of the regimes that were allowed to be here before. That is team ownership's fault, to a great degree. That goes back to the quitting of Jimmy Johnson to the anointing of Dave Wannstedt and Rock Spielman to Nick Saban and crew to Parcells/Ireland/Sparano ( all this under the Huizenga ownership) to the recently departed Ireland and the embarrassment of bullygate and his feud with Philbin and Aponte.
As has been said in this blog many a time, Steve Ross has been loyal to a fault. Huizenga probably was too. Parcels and gang were nothing more than payroll bandits who sunk this team to depths never seen before.
I think Ross is a good man and a good owner who wants to win. He is NOT cheap as, until now, he has spent good money on bad personnel and that falls on Ireland and to a certain degree on Ross for trusting Ireland for waaaaaay too long.
I think Huizenga also hung onto Wannstedt/Spielman for too long and thought too highly of Parcells and gang who just arrogantly took his money and ran.
The time has come to put the past behind us. The moves Hickey has made so far, have logic and value stamped all over them. He has one helluva retooling job on his hands and, thus far, even if you are the harshest of critics, you gotta admit he has addressed the team's needs, if only on paper, in an effective manner and Mr. Ross continues his strong support via his checkbook.
Therefore let's look ahead and leave the past and all its negativity as that barely visible speck of dust in our rearview mirrors. Go 'Phins 2014!

Bad Phans-

This is what I am saying. ITs gamesmanship by Hickey to let Strief know hes wanted. The price gets driven up. Donald Penn was not brought in after his release which tell me that hickey doesnt want him or Penn wants to play LT and get paid LT money when we clearly need a RT and will only pay RT money. Washington is probbaly going to pay him LT money to play RT. Thats foolish in my book.

Why don't they ever admit when they are wrong?

Posted by: Dashi | March 15, 2014 at 12:34 PM

Maybe for the same reason you don't admit when you are using different names (until after you get busted)?

The Saints are in an awful cap situation. Time to start restructuring guys again. I hope Strief knows he gave up all his leverage and a ton of cash. That was stupid to tell the Phins he wasn't coming in any case. His agent is a dope too. lol

MIT,

Are you married? Is she loyal to you? (I hope so). IF a guy with more money and wealth comes along and offers her an opportunity to live more luxury and in better fianancial means, you would expect her to turn him down bc she is loyal to you correct? This whole Strief thing is business and certainly not matrimony, but it nonetheless speaks to Strief's loyalty to the team that drafted him and aka "married" themselves to him. Its admirable but in the world of business, not matrimony, its foolish. Can you blame the Dolphins for wanting to show that Strief is the foolish one here?

If they win we love them. If they lose we hate them. Explain the basics of being a football fan to Steve Ross please Mando.

imagine winning to off season Super Bowls in a row, that would be awesome. Look how far it brought us last year!! wahoo, yippeee

imagine the Fins winning two off season Super Bowls in a row, that would be awesome. Look how far it brought us last year, wahoo, yippee

We still have the draft also and need some cap room for that, whatever needs don't get addressed in FA will be addressed in the draft, still a long way away from september.

Frank,

Who the hell are you to say what is foolish for another person to do? Is it foolish for someone to not want to relocate when no matter what he is already a millionaire making millions.

Think son, think.

Dashi correctly predicted 95% of Hickeys moves. So far.

I heard Strief will play for Beads....

GOOD ONE....

Ok Skipper

Phins have contacted specialist Hester..there's some news. Please let it be true...so frustrated with Thigpen last yr.

Posted by: Bad Phans | March 15, 2014 at 12:20 PM

GREAT, THAT WOULD BE AN UPGRADE OER THIGPEN...

Melvin- he not playing for millions. Hes playing for $0. Hes unsigned and NO has no cap room for him.

THINK SON, THINK!

Bad Phans,I must agree with you,Streif's agent is a jerk. He should have told Streif that it is smart business to at least listen to what other teams have to offer,no matter how bad he wants to go back to New Orleans. To make it REAL,he is a thirty year old right tackle and this most likely is his last chance to cash in on a decent contract. Agent:Miami is offering 5 mil a year and the Saints only have 1.5 mil a year in cap space to offer,so by all means re-sign with the Saints and be happy, duh! Someone needs a brain transplant. Just sayin

Hickey has SIX signings already this week. Gotta like the way he's plugging holes and not breaking the bank to do it. Lots of cap money left but don't forget we have guys like Pouncey and Tannehill to think about re-signing inthe not too distant future. Isn't going to be cheap.

Posted by: Dashi | March 15, 2014 at 01:11 PM

So your the Idiot responsible for our below average team that will again rank at or below 500 again in 2014, Thanks dicchead, oh and by the way, a monkey could of made the same moves so far this FA period

HOW FAR IS N.O. FROM MIAMI BY PLANE, AN HOUR?

*you're

Melvin,

When you are a free agent, normally your team doesnt want you or cant afford you anymore so you look to make some money on the market. Im saying Strief is foolish because he is nearly 31 years old, is no doubt looking at his last significant contract, and hes waiting, albeit admirably waiting, on a team that cant even afford to pay him the veterans minimum let alone sign any draft picks. THis is why i think he is foolish. If Im his agent, i also want to get paid. Im sure Cindrich (the agent) has been in striefs ear telling him that the dolphins will pay for your services much more than NO can. Loyalty is admirable- in matrimony- not in fianancial concerns.

Im still trying to figure out how strief is making million when he is unsigned Melvin. Riddle me that one?

THINK SON, THINK.

Armando....You did it!!! Great article, and just kidding. You actually wrote a real nice piece on the Fins & front office, even if you were just reporting what others said.....it's still GOOD. Thank you.

We are going to have a much better OL this year for the additions on the line, no babysitter needed, and an experienced coaches. Coach Benton will improve the line and develop players like Thomas, Brenner, and 2014 Draft.

Why shouldn't Miami be proactive in making sure people have the story straight and not follow some "rejection" fable that has no basis in truth?

Any smart management in ANY business would do the same. Those of you criticizing this are simply addicted to negativity and frankly sound ridiculous.

Pay him in beads stupid

I have found 95 out of Dashi's last 100 posts to be insipid.

The hell with him
